Ladies, how does everyone feel about taking their husband’s name when they get married? I’m genuinely not sure where I stand on it and would love your thoughts and experiences those of you who are already married, whether you have taken a new name or kept your own.

One the one hand, I hate the idea that taking my husband’s name symbolises that my ownership has passed from my Dad to my husband. I want to continue to be my own person with my own identity when if/ when I eventually get married. I would never expect a man to change his name, so why should I change mine? I don’t think I could marry man who would just EXPECT me to change my name, and not recognise that it is a big deal. My boyfriend’s mum never took her husbands name, they both work and they have a lovely relationship (though the children both took their dad’s name). Also my surname is also really cool and it would be a shame to get rid of it.

On the other hand, I can see some of the appeal of becoming a ‘Mr and Mrs’. If it is the right relationship, I can imagine it is an exciting rite of passage rather than a huge sacrifice. If I were having children maybe I would prefer for them to come from a united unit where the whole family shares a name. My mum took my Dads name, doesn’t regret it, and has kept her independence throughout 30 years of marriage.

I’m personally fortunate to have good role models on both sides of the coin. What do you ladies think?

Peace 🤟
