I have family and friends in South America (mostly Colombia but also Ecuador) where prostitution is legal and relatively common. It’s viewed similarly to going to a strip club in the U.S. in the way that men of different social classes who can obtain relationships (even very good-looking men) will still sometimes visit prostitutes and it’s not seen as a big deal.

If a man is in a committed relationship and visits prostitutes or “prepagadas” it’s considered the same as cheating and looked down upon. Also if a man has never had a real girlfriend and has only had sex with prostitutes it’s looked down upon. But it’s fairly common for a group of men to go out together drinking and then end up at a brothel.

It’s definitely not seen as a replacement for a girlfriend or wife though. I’ve asked some men who have been with sex workers how they felt about it. Consistently they told me that a lot of what’s fun about sex for them is the pursuit and not knowing if they will or won’t get to sleep with a woman. With sex workers that’s eliminated so it takes some of the pleasure out of the equation and it’s not as validating.

As far as the women who are sex workers there, my impression is that all of them are poor and don’t have better opportunities. Some of them may have a high libido, enjoy attention, and they may even sometimes enjoy the sex if it’s with an attractive and respectful man. But obviously no one wants their daughters to end up as sex workers and I don’t know of any upper class women who do sex work there

Edit: appreciate everyone recommending ways of finding an ethical hooker but I do okay at the moment dating non-sex workers.

Never felt the need personally. Women weren’t exactly prudish when I was dating. In fact, once I shifted more towards dating with an eye on marriage (vs just hookups), by and large women wanted to move to the bedroom faster than I did. I was surprised at how fast, sometimes!

I was also pre-med in college for awhile, and whether it’s prostitution or hookup culture or just hedonism… STDs and pregnancy risks are real, y’all. You can be “sex positive” in general and still not think we should all be walking around with 50+ bodies under our belts.

All that said, I have travelled a bit and I know some men who partook in cultures where it was legal (or decriminalized) and more or less part of the culture. I know folks who have never left the US and radfems and such may struggle with prostitution being “okay” anywhere, but there was very much a “when in Rome” aspect of this. Mostly the men I knew were just young(ish) single horn dogs on vacation.

I don’t think for any of them it was a “lifestyle choice” or lack of alternative. I have no idea if there were negative health outcomes or anything along those lines either. AFAIK most of them are in relationships or married now.

Prostitution is one of those policy areas, like healthcare and military spending and Covid and any number of others, where I came back from a few years abroad thinking we were completely turned around and nonsensical in our policy approach here in the States. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am from India and visiting SWs is looked down upon considerably. It's seen as something done mostly by people from very low socioeconomic starta although people from ever section does that- the richer you are, the more elite the sex workers you can get (like failed actresses and models). I am 24. High school love was not really a thing in my days (although it is now because of western influence). Later half, I did put up better pictures and highlighted my job (which is something that has, apparently, good career prospects and valued in society). I got around 20 matches in 3 weeks. Half of them never texted. So must've right swiped by mistake. Most of the others were just looking for casual talking, just to pass time. Only had one or two serious girls, but never bothered to take it far because we realised our goals and dreams are not compatible. Uptil this point I never tried dating for fun. Unless I felt there is long term compatability, I won't pursue someone romatically. So proposed to one girl of such sort hoping that my efforts for the past 6 months had some effect, only to realise she too saw me as a way to kill her free time. If you can't get regular women like me, you get sex, if you can then but you aren't a slayer then you get to have sex with more attractive women than you would reasonably have gotten. I’ve seen a few sex workers in the past and if I were single likely would again. The benefits are sex with a beautiful woman. You may not get love but you can get treated decently and like you’re an attractive person. Or you can pretend it’s love and enjoy the night. I don’t see how it saves money. It’s a big industry, but the people making money are mostly not the ‘workers’. It’s big porn producers, celebrity porn accounts, big hosting sites like pornhub, and then Megan brother owners. The average prostitute isn’t making bank.

It’s not the world’s oldest profession. Historically prostitutes were slaves. The oldest profession for women is midwifery.

While some men might see using prostitutes as an ‘alternative’ to a relationship, or a way to have some needs met while they aren’t ready for marriage or the commitment of a relationship, the risk is that an increasing number of women are setting porn/prostitution as boundary and those men are going to find themselves undateable/unmarriagable because of their use of prostitutes and/or pornography.

We’re already seeing a trend with younger people not having as much casual sex, and I think it’s only going to make the divide between men and women greater. People (men and women) who see sex as an act of intimacy and expression of love will not engage in transactional sex and won’t want a relationship with someone who does only see it as a transaction or service.

Casual sex is a different matter entirely, and the erosion or reduction in young people having a ‘phase’ of casual sex during which they explore what they like (with someone they’re actually attracted to) is an interesting phenomenon. From what I hear, young women are being turned off sex because men are becoming increasingly entitled and violent in sex, and are educated by porn, which many women find disgusting, so they would rather stay single and avoid it. This feeds the men’s porn habits and maybe influences their decision to use prostitutes, and that then is a determining factor in them becoming undatable to the very group of women they most desire - chaste, less experienced, not screwing around in their 20s.

The young men who are capable of exercising self control and discipline are the ones who will win out in the long run.

There's common advice on men's prostitution advice groups (basically just travel groups in Asia) to not fall in love with a hooker because it happens to literally every guy. Sex releases love hormones. That's the bigger concern, and some men do date or marry these hookers.
