Here's a take I've got. (warning, long comment)

If you're an "average dude", and you got past high school without ever having kissed a girl, lost your virginity, been in a relationship, or especially if you've never even gotten attention from a girl in that way, you are by definition not average. And this goes double if you go to college and still nothing.

Maybe you were socially stunted. Maybe you didn't hit your glow-up until you were almost about to graduate. Maybe you were homeschooled. Maybe you just weren't even concerned with girls until late into HS or maybe after HS. Perhaps you were even bullied in school.

And these are all things that can happen and can somewhat stunt your growth and dating ability. And that's absolutely okay, because life happens

But you must acknowledge that you're not average. You're playing a game that you have significantly less experience at. You might be "technically average" by scientific metrics or whatever, but despite what you might wanna tell yourself, your game is not quite as "there" as someone who's been flirting with girls since he was 14. He's been just "doing it" for a while now; he never had to "study" how to flirt.

(I view it similarly to fighting. You can "know all the techniques" and have hundreds of ideas of what you'd do in a fight, but those ideas don't matter at all if you haven't ever been in a fight, sparred, or even punched another person; and you're nowhere near as good of a fighter as you think until you actually gain experience.)

The most important factor in all this though is the social network gained through schooling. There's something to be said for proximity and making dating a lot easier. Already having a network of people who sorta know each other is way better ROI than endless swiping and begging for a response on some app that's literally designed to keep you single.

And I'm not saying you can't make up for lost time and start succeeding, and nor am I saying that someone who did well in high school can necessarily keep it up

But, I am saying that it will be a more uphill battle for you than it would be for dudes who didn't miss those experiences, and more or less you need to accept that you are below average in experience, which very much matters.
