I feel like I agree with this in principle, but reflecting on it, I don't think I have ever been friends with men who don't understand how men and women can be friends. Perhaps this is just because I've always moved in professional and high achieving circles in a relatively progressive culture?

Every male I know finds value in their professional connections with female professionals, and those readily extend into non-workplace friendships.

To be fair, these often become couples that are friends with other couples, as people progress through life stages. But they're always people who relate to each other on multiple levels, not just the work related stuff.

Someone hasn't tried having female friends as an attractive MAN....because I can tell ya, it isn't easy friendzoning women that want the D. The inevitable reckoning occurs and girls, like guys do not want to hang around for very long watching a guy they want out dating, fucking and hitting up other women.

My friends and I have tried but my biggest group of ACTUAL female friends have always been the GF of my mates which then disappear or fade when the couples breakup. The rest are associates at work or acquaintances whom I meet in passing at the gym, club or other such places but they aren't friends because taking it further means dating. And if they don't get dating\sex they seldom want to hang around to just be friends....maybe that happens when the guys are sort of pleasant but not particularly hot\high value.

Very few but the truly autistic have claimed not being able to interact\tolerate females....we get along perfectly fine with women but that isn't developing a real friendship like with the bros....

Believe me...have tried and it is always ends in either full on or can't handle.....this has been the experience of all my attractive bros as well.

And this doesn't even get into being a friend of a new random girl who is married or in a relationship....exactly how does that go when she tells her husband or BF, "yeah, I am going to out with this new attractive dude I met to golf, ski, workout, drink, eat, party, boating, and text\chat about shit all the time, and no you don't need to come" How does that work in the real life?

I’ll be totally real here. I used to have this mindset, but as I got older, I began to actually value friendships with women. Let me explain.

When I was inexperienced, I had this toxic idea that women that I could be friends with a women because I (or they) would end up catching feelings, and ultimately they would end up burning me (or I them). Probably past trauma, I’m not ashamed to admit it. Well, this certainly happens in some cases.

But after deliberately making friends with women FIRST, what I’ve come to realize is that the BEST relationships come from a sort of friendship first; no pressure, just getting to know each other, seeing if you truly click beyond sex.

Sure there are one night stands, but they do not equal intimate relashionship by any means.

Why should I care about the gender of my friends?

My friends are only people who l like to be with and enjoy time with. I’m not saying men and women can’t be friends, they can sure. But it’s pretty hard. They think differently. Men tend to think more about actions and results. Women tend to think more about what feelings an action is going to cause.

The reason I don’t have female friends is because they value and like things I don’t. The majority of women ( and nearly 100% where i live ) , don’t like videogames and sports. I like those things and my friends need to like those things. It’s just an example.

Friendships is one of the only things where you can discriminate at will. Nobody is entitled to have friends or be friends with A, B , etc .

I rest my case on that men-women friendship is possible in the case there's no attraction whatsoever in either way. That already make those cases rare, and it's not obvious at first glance if it's going to be that way or not.

Then, maybe it's because I'm in my mid 20's, but unless I constantly engage, friendships aren't worth jackshit. I used to have "friends" that would just contact me for emotional support, and one day I stopped engaging to see what would happen. Turn out, I had no friends that happened to be women.

The conditional side isn't here for men, that's usually why they see that as more worth it. And guess what is the only thing men can't get from other men...? Yeah, you get it. I don't mean to insult anyone or say that's all women are good for, but experience have proven that not only friendship from women is conditional, but they'll also dip the moment you need some support, (and I'm not talking about dumping everything on them). There's no such thing as 'Platonic' friendship between man and woman from the perspective of man. Look at all the studies done showing how any 'friendly' act or attention (from the point of view of woman) is taken as a sign of romantic and sexual interest (by man).

I've had female friends all my life, and we've all done fun shit, and helped each other when we've needed each other. For instance, my current best friend I've helped move, as has she helped me move. I value my female friends just fine. They need to bring a lot of value to make it worth the effort, though, and they don't get near the same amount of attention as my gfs do.

I think your general premise is correct, but it’s built on some false assumptions.

I am a 42 year old man, and for the first 35 or so years of my life my only female friends were people I dated, wanted to date, or were dating friends of mine. I was a firm believer that men and women couldn’t be just friends.

Then I got divorced. It was messy. She cheated. I was devastated...it’s how I even eventually found my way to the TRP as I tried to make sense of it all. In the midst of all my woman hating victim bullshit, I had some female coworkers (both a little younger, married and not people I would be attracted to) reach out. These are women I would have totally disregarded in the past because they were of “no use” to me. But they were kind, they made me laugh, they listened to me whine way more than I should have and never made me feel bad about it...I just dont know that I could have talked to a guy friend like that. They helped me through one of the worst times of my life and I will be forever grateful.

But maybe even more important, it helped me learn that women are just people, with a lot of the same conversations and worries and sense of humor as men when men aren’t being fake for other men. They can be great friends, and can really provide insight into a world that seems so foreign from the outside, but really isn’t all that different once you get to see behind the curtains.

I am now remarried and in the healthiest relationship I have ever been in. I love and respect my wife for who she is as a person and not just how hot she is or how good a mom she is. I am still friends with those coworkers even though we don’t work together anymore.

So I agree with you. The problem with a lot of men is they don’t respect women. But I think you’re wrong as to why. It’s not because all they care about is sex...most men, down deep, want far more than that. But a lifetime of being beaten down about not being manly, combined with putting women on a pedestal, completely destroys most of their chances because they’re never gonna let themselves be vulnerable emotionally outside of a committed relationship.

I've got plenty of female friendships that I do value, but I can see where these guys are coming from in that the number of women who aren't interesting enough to be friends with seem to make for a plurality; in other words, there are a lot of "basic bitches" out there.

I wouldn't value a relationship with such a woman, either; She's got to be friend material before she can ever be relationship material. I think a lot of men don't want the burden of a friendship with a woman specifically because it may evolve over time to a level of closeness that makes him want to 'upgrade', which is a proposal that too often falls on its' face because women don't abide by the friendship-relationship progression; Most women who are after a relationship these days demand that you fuck her first, ask questions later. Men and women can only be friends at a certain level. I have two close women friends. I am not attracted to them and would not date them even if we were all single. One of them is married and I am friends with her husband as well. We do not talk all the time and when we do it’s short and usually about planning group activities. Her boyfriend now does not like me to a point. Don’t know what she told him but he can probably sense it.

Look at any marriage counselor material or videos or read any books and infidelity including one called “just a friend” which is like the “AA” manual for indefinitely. Long term relationships are work and must be taken care of and friends that want to or will have sex with you are not helpful to relationship.

Also with social media and this is a real epidemic that’s destroying a lot of marriages and relationships once you are in a relationship you can never have one conversation with an ex ever again. In the book “not just friends” she references a professor who studied (forget the name off the top of my head) ex reconnecting and 85% of them lead to affairs. Quickly, it’s an epidemic. The feelings hit you quick and you have a lot of intimacy with an ex. Your current husband or boyfriend is actually at a disadvantage. And it is an epidemic as people not only cheat they abandon children and destroy lives. So much to explain.

You can be acquaintances with opposite sex friends but you can never share intimate details or allow them into the space that is for you and your partner. This kind of logic is why marriages and relationships fail. They initial honeymoon period always comes to an end then it takes work. So you friend becomes new and exciting.

My argument is I’m a busy person and women friends tend to require a bit more maintenance then male friends. For that reason and since my childhood friend group is mostly men those are the ones I have time for. If life had unlimited time female friends may be worth the effort. I find they take up the same amount of time a girlfriend would which makes having a real relationship harder.

I have had friendships with women but the ones that were platonic all ended because someone caught feelings. I don't believe that you can be platonic friends with a woman as a straight man. Perhaps platonic as a dude is seen differently because women do some sexual things with their "platonic" friends. Replace that female friend with a dude and it starts to look more like a friendship/relationship situation. If I was in a relationship, having a female friend would cause scrutiny, unless she was also in a relationship.

I would like to add that a lot of propositions for friendships are after a woman rejects someone. You know, the classic LJBF. You can't be mad if you reject someone and they don't want to be friends with you. No one wants to be an orbiter.

Heterosexual Male - Female platonic friendships are not inherently stable - they are like an ion looking to become an isotope. Friendships will take one of three directions to a more stable state - 1) Relationship, 2) Friend-zoning 3) FWB. Friendzoning is not true friendship because of the nascent unrequited love flowing from one person to the next. A FWB is arguably the only true stable friendship between men and women and that is a minefield unto itself. I agree it can exist for short durations, but almost invariably it will progress to solve the riddle to the gene's deciding "what's happening here?"

Moreover The word "Friend" itself has become so ambiguous that it's impossible to say for sure anyone is right or wrong on here. A deep, supportive, and unconditional friendship though is extremely unlikely to ever flourish because of all the aforemetioned differences between the sexes and the conflicts they bring about. Furthermore by being enmeshed in a social web - where many actors are hard at work in a tournament mating game, these burgeoning friendships will be tested by emotions far more powerful than the cordial attitudes men and women friends generally share with one another. Eventually the emotions or outside players will take the steering wheel - because nature always bats last. Same sex friendships are not exposed to a fraction of these forces, and hence can become stable and are the historical norm.
