Steve Irwin - One I haven’t seen here yet. I think most men, women, and kids alike could admire him for different reasons - he was badass and funny but also very passionate about his cause and a family man. And sadly one of the few celebs who doesn’t have any scandals I’m aware of (aside from PETA stuff of course).

Mr. Rogers - Excellent moral values, also no scandals. I feel like some men might role their eyes a bit at this one, but truth is it takes a lot of strength to be this kind.

Some good examples of positive masculinity, is Julius from everybody hates Chris, played by Terry Crews. He's a hard working all around dad, who's frugal, makes sure everything is take care of. He's not abusive, bravado, macho. Danny Tanner rip Bob Saget, He raised 3 daughters on his own. Uncle Phil from the original fresh prince. Bob Belcher is another one. He works hard to put food on the table and doesn't have a huge bravado toxic attitude.

Barack Obama - while not perfect, I’ve always thought he was a really positive balance of traditional masculinity and vulnerability, knowing when to stand up for yourself/others, and also showing human emotion (crying after Sandy Hook and also the eulogy he gave for the victims of Dylan Roof), being protective and devoted to his family also.

Edit: most of y’all are too young to remember Obama’s predecessor. I was in high school during 911 and went to college during the remainder of the Bush years. Now THOSE were some hawkish times. By comparison Obama was a dove and constantly criticized by the right for being “soft on terror”. A lot of what he did what just trying to clean up the mess that Bush left. So no, I don’t agree with everything he did but I grade him on a curve and by most standards Obama was an excellent president. The post was just regarding his masculinity though and was not meant to critique every decision he made as commander in chief.

He was probably an 8 physically on a good day. He wrecked that though. But close to Chad. I had friends ask how I’d gotten such a cute boyfriend. He was my first.

I left his ass at 28.

I learned what a good man was. And my husband is devoted, loyal, strong, and competent. And funny. He isn’t 6/2 and I don’t give a shit. Give me the strong and loving man who makes me and our children feel safe. He is a marksman and can fix anything.

My grandfather was a farmboy and a army man. Loved us a lot but also was no nonsense. my dad used to talk about how on the edge of the property where the woods started my grandpa would always grow Pine trees and my dad remembered going out there and cutting them down with him in the winter time as a side business selling a few Christmas trees to people around town. Got me excited as a kid when me and my sis would go out and “try” helping him. Eventually he sold the property when him and my grandmother retired and moved into a retirement home.
Well, years later after he passed away we were at his memorial, and a man about my dads age started chatting with me and he mentioned my grandfather coming over and delivering a tree and I sparked the memory. Then he laid this on me “you know, your grandfather never actually charged anyone for those trees. He just knew there were some families like mine that struggled and couldn’t afford things like a Christmas tree and he didn’t think it was right for any kids to not grow up without one. So he’d just grow those trees for the poor families in the neighborhood and give them to us so we’d have one for Christmas just like everyone else”

He never told anyone. He just saw something he could do something about, and went ahead and did it (every year for YEARS). He never asked for money, never said a word, and never expected anything in return. He just did it to do it.

I think about that a lot.

IMO, outside of a Barack Obama (agree he’s a good positive example) so many of the examples here are of insanely high status tough guys acting somewhat vulnerable and agreeable in their personal life.

So basically, you have to be a hulking Chad with world class accomplishments and status to show the softer traits and get respect for them, which kind of proves the many points of RP.

As much as I dislike much of his positions and find him cringe, I’d say Jordan Peterson has many aspects that apply.

He is (or was) truly trying to lift up young men and speak to them without condescending when nobody else is even trying outside of cartoon characters like Tate.

There’s a lot to dislike and criticize about the guy, but he’s making an effort.

Him owning that lost and misguided Incels looked to him for guidance was actually courageous.

The reaction from women when he teared up talking about how fucked up those guys are living was not only sickening but ironically proved tons of RP points about how women will use men’s emotions and weakness against them when it’s convenient.

Legolas from the LOTR series. He is so loyal kind hearted and caring from the start. In real life though, it’d be my partner. Hes much bigger and stronger than me but he is the most gentle nurturing caring person I’ve ever met. He always uses his strength in ways to help and protect others. If I stumble he never fails to catch me to be sure I don’t fall. He protects my head when it’s close to a wall or a sharp object by gently cradling it with his hand. I’ve never felt so safe and loved in my entire life. I think even as a child I never felt this level of gentle strong protectiveness being expressed towards me. He shows me the value in being strong. That you can literally hold the people in your life up to help them. When I was very sick with my eating disorder Id faint under warm water in the shower and he would carefully hold my face in his hands and press his chest against mine to hold me up against the bathroom wall so I wouldn’t fall. He never supports my disordered behavior and is a strong advocate for me embracing the body I have no matter what whether I can weight, age, etc. He is strong and caring in every way and honestly when I think of the best version of what I consider a good man it’s him. On that note, before I get a reply about how he must be “chad” he isn’t. He isn’t rich he isn’t living in a mansion he isn’t made of pure muscle etc. He is beautiful but he is a real normal human man with a fairly average height and a fairly average build. It’s the way he uses his strength and intelligence to always protect others that I admire.

For me, and I realize this sounds woo woo, but it's just the best way I have of categorizing it, I don't think Positive Masculinity is necessarily this one way, I more tend to think there are types of admirable men and clearly overlap.

But like, Steve-O is sort of a Trickster Archetype which is very masculine. That humor, that daring, that willingness to look the fool, to be in danger, and to shine a light on what is silly, absurd, and funny about being alive is very much what this does and I think it is very masculine and very positive.

There's clearly like a Warrior Archetype of the man who fights, defends others, has courage in the face of overwhelming danger, and uses masculine strength for the benefit of those weaker than him (Batman, Jocko). I think this is the one most associated with positive masculinity by the most people, but I think it is a mistake to say this is the only way to be positively masculine (as is hopefully obvious).

I think there's something like a Sage Archetype. The man who knows many things, many wisdoms, many of them disagreeable or unpopular or uncomfortable. And he shares this with others especially when the world is in peril from ignorance. Jordan Peterson, Destiny, West Wing, Batman, Christopher Hitchens). It isn't that women aren't wise or knowers of things, but I think the Masculine version of this is often so positive because it is more confrontational, more explosive, and more willing to deal with the peril of speaking truth to people who don't want to hear it. They're vital to the world.

I struggle to name this Archetype, but it is something like the Protector or Servant Archetype. It's the man who maybe isn't particularly gifted in a lot of ways, but he is loyal and dogged beyond compare. He can carry the weight of others because he just doesn't have that kind of ego or quit in him. He's often a vital component of the success of these other Archetypes because he doesn't need to win or to be the one receiving of praise or notoriety. He's capable of self sacrifice beyond that of others. (Sam, Joel, Faramir)

I think there's something like a King Archetype, not that women cannot be Leaders, but I do think it's clear men are more drawn to it and often best adjusted into it for a variety of reasons. I think the King is the man who is able to balance and draw from many of the other archetypes and capable of translating their benefits to more people with greater reach. (Superman, Aragorn, West Wing Characters). I'd say this is the second most commonly thought of male type.

There's clearly overlap and there's clearly evolution, for example, I dunno how much of a Warrior an 80 year old man is going to make. Hopefully by then he's transitioned into Sage or King, right? Probably a lot more young men are going to be Tricksters than Kings because they just don't have the life-experience yet for King and they've still got all the reckless abandon in them to shit in home depot toilets. But all of these are very positive uses of natural male talents/virtues.

My favorite masculine characters/figure are clearly strong both in will and physicality, but also have a gentle, soft, and goofy disposition that they are not afraid to hide. I used to look up to Goku and Kamina as a kid because those two have strong masculine traits in terms of psychical determination, competitiveness, domineering but they're also extremely sweet and kind. Goku is biologically and mentally hardwire to fight for the sake of it, the man can literally end the world and no one can stop him BUT he's a endearing country bumpkin who's too goofy to take seriously.

Hank Hill, Steve Irwin and Mr. Rogers are a relic of a bygone era. They present and exert their masculinity through unwavering sets of values and virtues. You can dangle the most hedonistic and materialistic shit in their face and they would not budge.
