This is a more exaggerated version of the whole "cows are more dangerous than sharks" meme, because cows kill more people every year than sharks, but that's because millions of people live and work around billions of cows, and shark/human encounters are extremely rare.

Yes, you are more likely to be killed by a man than by a bear in your day to day life, but if you were stuck in a wooded area alone with one or the other, the bear is obviously far more dangerous.

Man. I’ve been a victim of some pretty intense sexual trauma but I’ve never been raped by a man so some of this is speculation on what my own behavior would be. That being said, even with the additional threat of rape, I would pick man. I would rather a chance to live fighting against someone I have a realistic chance against versus an even more gruesome, near guaranteed death at the hands of a bear.

Anybody saying that they would rather be alone with a bear is deliberately obtuse, or truly knows so little of the world and the things in it that they need a professional carer. Assuming you're up close to this bear and you have to be in close proximity for 48 hours, you're fucked. Even a black bear is going to stop being afraid and start testing you if you have to be near one another for 48 hours.

If you don't have to be anywhere near one another and have shelter from one another, what's even the point of the question? You could just simply choose not to be around either of them.

Since I was little, I've done volunteer animal rescue. Most people are oblivious to just how badly a simple fucking house cat can absolutely shred you if it really wants to. Obviously you're not going to die fighting a house cat, but I've seen plenty of bites fuck people up with infections.

Some bears don't simply kill what they catch, they pin them to the ground and eat them chunk at a time while they're still alive.

Even black bears can destroy you without much effort.

Bears are also opportunistic predators. Meaning, if they come across you and think they can take you, you're fucked. I'm 6'3 and 100KG. In less than 5 seconds I'm on my back, pinned, organs and entrails outside of my body and multiple bones broken.

I don't know shit about this guy I'm spending two days in the woods with, but I know that if I spawn into the woods with a bear next to me, I'm better off jumping off the nearest cliff.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the total percentage or rapists amongst men is something like .1%, but 100% of bears would rip me and everyone else in the thread into absolute shreds while eating us alive. Honestly, even worst case scenario, I think I'd rather be raped and slowly eaten alive by an opportunistic apex predator.

Edit: I honestly can't believe the downvotes on this, lol. If you would rather spend 48 hours with a bear, you don't know enough about bears. If a bear wants you dead, you're fucking dead. If you don't have to be around the bear, then the question is pointless. It's more "Would you rather see a man or a bear?".

This isn't the fucking Jungle Book, people. A strange human forced to spend 48 hours with a grizzly bear, where they can't leave and have no weapons? It's not going to befriend you. You're not outpowering it. Fuck 48 hours. If you're lucky, it's all over in 48 seconds.

The absolute most you could do in this situation is squeeze in a quick prayer that the bear has hit a maturity point to where it's grown large enough that it crushes you to death instantly instead of just pinning you.

I used to go around looking for strays and lost dogs, then take them back home or take them to a shelter for treatment. The amount of times I'd seen a person near totally shut down seeing an friendly, excited stray/lost pitbull is tremendously high. (Not impossible to understand, but I'm just trying to draw attention to how people aren't really able to handle animals that are even a little scary.)

Most of you would get an elevated, panicky heart rate seeing a big stray dog coming towards you, I don't know where the you get the idea you're fucking with a grizzly bear in any capacity.

I take that back actually. You could, under certain circumstances, if the stars align, give it a somach ache.

Considering I'm doing pretty good in fitness, I would probably survive no problems versus an average man, be him 20, 30, 40, 50, doesn't matter, and I don't think I'm being cocky. Like, I'm 23, have 8 years of going to the gym, I'm fairly strong and pretty agile. If the dude is bigger, I'd just tire him, if he is more slender I'd be stronger. He has to either know how to fight (anything could do, I'd get rekt), be "me" but better (stronger but still agile, or more agile with similar strenght), or a lot stronger (which is not very likely, considering the amount of people that do heavy lifting, and that are stronger than the average gym bro)

A man - I can’t fight off a grizzly in the chance that it would attack, and not only do I stand a chance of surviving fighting a man, but the likelihood of us fighting is far lower than a bear. On top of this, the best case scenario for a bear is it would leave me alone, and the best case scenario for a man would mean cooperation.

Hell, even from a risk evaluation pov - if the man leaves me alone, that’s not ideal but 48 hours in the woods surviving alone is very very doable for me, the fact that this is the best case scenario for a bear is already quite telling of the risks

Ironically, women are likely to die with the bear but not necessarily because of the bear. It's because they're completely incompetent and if you put them out in the woods alone, they're likely to freeze to death or die of thirst. This has been proven over and over again on survival TV shows.

Depends on how close to the grizzly I am. If I am within the clawing distance of a defensive mama bear, I’d take the man: assuming the man also has no weapon, there are good chances I can outpower him. If I am at a safe distance, I’d rather take the grizzly, as I dealt with enough wildlife in my decades of hiking, I wouldn’t risk to get trapped with a random guy that might have Mike Tyson’s muscles and Charles Manson’s psyche. I am sure my answer isn’t satisfactory, but to be honest, while the motives of the question are legit, the analogy doesn’t really fly.

It's really 50/50 odds but the scenario doesn't work the same for a man because as a man you don't have to worry about being raped in the woods...I think I could take 80% of men in a physical confrontation maybe more...I doubt I could take a bear but might be able to outsmart it but they run faster and can climb trees...Are we talking Black bear, Brown bear,Grizzly bear, or Polar Bear?

Of course I'll chose a man. He has same goal as me - to spend 48 hours in the woods. So we can work together. Bear is a big dangerous animal that will kill and eat you if it decide that you're a threat or a good snack. And you can't do anything against it, it much stronger and can outrun you with ease.

Man obviously. A man even raping you + killing you even if you are a woman chances are far less than getting killed by a bear. Even if a woman is raped, she can take vengeance or even kill the man with something in the woods. She can also hide. Bears will sniff you out, crush the log with you inside if you are underneath it, climb trees if they see or smell you there, and maul you to death which is worse than getting raped as you will die screaming but not instantly. Women saying that haven't heard of bears killing humans. It's a gruesome sight.

I think an interesting question is what distribution of chance does it take before women change their answer. i.e. would they rather take a 5% chance of being eaten alive vs a 0.01% chance of being raped.
