I don't care about dress codes that much, though schools do have a duty to their students to ensure that they learn to dress and comport themselves in ways that won't interfere with their thriving in adulthood.

I completely agree with the premise that school dress codes shouldn't be designed to protect boys from distractions. It wasn't Anne Wessel's problem that I stared at her thong in Spanish class every day instead of learning how to conjugate participles. It was my choice to look, as a sexual being, just as it was her choice to dress provocatively as a sexual being.

I completely reject the stupid, stupid feminist narrative that young men should behave like eunuchs around women making sexual displays. It does not objectify a woman to enjoy looking at her body when she puts it on display. Insisting that straight men pretend women aren't enjoyable to look at is to insist that they deny a huge part of their identity. Young men should, of course, be taught that there's a difference between checking out a girl and being a creepy starer. They should also be taught that there's a difference between looking down a coworker's blouse who bends over to get something out of the printer (if you happen to see it, that's okay, but don't try for a look), and what's appropriate on spring break or at a party bar (where everyone is aware of the dynamics of the sexual marketplace and women know exactly what they're wearing and that men will see and enjoy it.

Yah but...who is shaming who? I had an amazing looking girlfriend in high school. Seriously, an 11 out of 10 on anyone's scale. She had exceptionally large breasts on a very thin frame and she was at 17 a very successful hand and hair model. We all had to wear uniforms so there wasn't any deviation from a white polo or a white button down shirt. The only people that looked upon her with disdain were, you guessed it, ALL of the female teachers. I would witness the scowls the female teachers would glance at her with through the hallways at school. She had such an amazing life going on she could pretty much laugh the negative attention off without much of a though.

One day I met up with her after school (pre-cell phone era) to find her in tears. Turns out that she was sent home for school for "not wearing a bra" as well as a Saturday school or detention penalty. She told me that a teacher accused her of not wearing a bra and or wearing insufficient undergarments and causing a scene. She always wore regular underwear/bra's etc... In todays climate the school would have been sued as she was actually poked with a ruler on the side of her breast and top of her shoulder.

It was pretty obvious how insanely jealous the lady teachers were of the attention my girlfriend got. They were technically the only ones shaming her for her appearance. She could speak at length about when she got older about how vicious women can be towards each other.

Oh and for any SJW's/White Knights/females casually reading this post-guess what? Both women AND men are sex objects. A woman who is a 10 isn't going to view a guy who is a 2 the same as a guy who is a 10. Nobody is going to teach that girl that guys are not sex objects.

(most) boys finding women sexually attractive is a biological impulse and it is distracting. I would also assume that boys wearing equally revealing clothing might be distracting to some girls in the classroom. I remember at my public HS, boys weren't allowed to wear tank tops.

This is the whole point of a dress code. It's not like people are telling these girls what to wear and not wear in their free leisure time and wearing a crop top and booty shorts to school versus a normal tee shirt and jeans is not going to affect your academic performance.

Also, let's not forget these are children. They're not the wisest people on earth and I'd assume a lot of the girls are purposely dressing this way to get a boy's attention she's crushing on or something. Girls learn how to wield their sexuality as a force of power at a very young age given they're conventionally pretty and get a lot of attention from boys.

School systems can be stupid. Their dress code rules often outlaw clothing that is appropriate. Occasionally, dress codes can even make unnecessary headaches for poor and minority students. Schools systems can be notorious for creating rules without thinking them through, because they are not as educated as attorneys. I recall that studies show that women actually dress differently (tighter, showing more skin) at different hormonal levels, or different parts of the menstrual cycle. So dress code issues are, in part, issues of physical development in girls, and part of the growing up process. It's appropriate for schools to take action.
As a former teacher, let me assure you that girls push the dress code limits, often competitively. I still remember the girl that filled her locker with extra clothing items, so she could completely change clothes during the school day. This was specifically to hide sexy clothing from her parents.
Boys and girls have different behavior issues. Boys are more impulsive, as those areas of the brain naturally develop later. Girls are more verbal and communicative, so they are more often disciplined for talking to peers. Girls are rarely disciplined for rough play, though boys can get suspended for it, even if both parties consent to the play activity. There is no inequality for suspending girls for not meeting appropriate behavior standards, simply because a particular behavior is predominantly shown by girls.
This is not 'shaming girls for their bodies'. In fact, the absence of dress standards is far more shaming, as girls will use dress as a competition to shame other girls, both in terms of sexiness, and in terms of wealth. Dress codes are used to educate girls in appropriate use of clothing, as well as providing a safe environment for girls as well as boys.

So it never dawned on me until I was an adult, 22, met what I thought was a college girl probably freshman, very attractive. Nope. High school senior and 17 years old. It was at that moment that I realised that a young teacher having to deal with dozens of young women on a daily basis could in fact be a massive distraction and a moral monster. Teachers and students can be alone, and frequently. Students joke around with teachers and the other way around. Flirting happens. Sometimes harmless sometimes not. So take a young teacher who mentally isn't that much further than his senior girls in his class, put them together every day, and tell me that it would be NO PROBLEM AT ALL to not have any distraction for the "adult" who is only 4 or 5 years older. Which in another year the idea of them dating is within the realm of possibility. Now tell me that would not be distracting. Guys. Dress codes aren't just for the students to have a distraction free education. It's for the Teachers, too. So they can educate distraction free.

If anything this is an example of how institutions fail to hold girls accountable to even minimal standards of behavior. Schools get to set the dress code. Students are aware of it from day one. Oh my god, some friend of a friend of facebook has been going on about victim shaming and how all women should believe that men will blame them for rape and all male friends have thought about sex with them and society blames women for what men do. I tried to argue that no, society by-and-large is based on personal accountability and most men don't victim blame. She went on about rape culture and I told her we are not in a rape culture. Men are scared to be accused, will shun a rapist, and will hunt one that hurts their family. She went on about being oppressed by the patriarchy, and I posited that she has a victim mentality that was instilled by feminist indoctrination, and therefore she was actually being oppressed by women. Imagine staying that angry all the time, looking for things to be offended about and then rebranding any old offense as rape, being constantly told to fear all men as rapists...

But anyway, my stepdaughter tried going to school in daisy dukes and a wife-beater. She's developed ahead of other girls. She looked like a hooker. It would definitely have been disruptive and I would agree that a school administrator has the capacity to decide if the clothing is too provocative. I’m prefacing this by saying that I don’t agree with any mandatory dress codes, unless the institution is subsidizing some $$$ for the wardrobe. It’s censorship at the very minimum, which I don’t condone.

That being said, I had several T-shirts in my rotation that I couldn’t wear to school. Several beer logos, and a couple if band t-shirts that wouldn’t go over well, and I’m positive that most of you people had similar wardrobe options. The difference is that we simply didn’t wear them to school, whereas these gals want to paint themselves as victims of a transgression that the boys at school could theoretically commit (Even though everybody knows that women are the ones who judge other women for clothing; guys really don’t give a shit)

The problem in these comments is a lot of people are assuming girls are getting sent home and pulled out of class for dressing like “sluts”. That’s not really the case being addressed here. And many fail to realize the reasons being stated to women when being confronted by it.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I had to call my mom to bring me jeans in high school. I had on thick tights under a dress past my knees. But my butt caused the back of my dress to ride up literally a quarter inch above the inch limit. Even with tights I had to change or sit in ISS. Yeah, the dress code is the dress code. But I was constantly told how it was distracting to boys. As if the extra quarter inch was going to make a dude jizz his pants. Dudes are going to stare regardless if they’re attracted to a chick. It’s normal.

The thing here is some aren’t being told “it’s the dress code”. They’re telling them that it’s because of the boys. It’s spinning the narrative the girls dressing a certain way causes boys to be distracted and it’s important to not distract the boys. But they can pull the girls out of class and take time away from them.

It’s how it’s approached. I agree students need to dress appropriately. But it got to the point a bra strap sliding from under the sleeve was distracting to boys. Even if otherwise dressed appropriately.

The administrators are telling the girls that boys basically can’t control themselves and can’t focus if a chick has even an iota of skin or underwear showing. They’re basically telling them guys are weak and lack will power so we have to do stuff to help them.

It’s insulting to both sides.

Ok, this thing is right for the wrong reason. Dress codes are some puritanical bullshit. I’m fine with anything up until kids wear t-shirts that say “Hitler is my Nigga” or some shit. Dress codes are 98% waste of time and energy.

The problem is that the boys didn’t fucking write the policy, so quit portraying them as fucking rapists-in-waiting. Teaching these kids that it’s “the other genders fault you can’t have what you want” is the surest way to make sure that men and women remain contentious and distrustful of each other. That’s not what progress looks like.

I got sent home for colored hair. It happens less with boys. But to be fair part of that is our culture. You go to the store and all they fucking sell are short shorts. I pick up identical shorts for identically aged 3-4 year olds and the boys ONLY go past the knee and the girls BARELY cover the ass. Fuck the companies that make this shit.

Honestly it's a bit of both. There are ways to teach girls and their parents to do better about this without shaming the girls body. But the answer also isn't the blanket-shame all boys either.

My thoughts:

Every teacher that has ever taught junior high or high school knows that clothing isn't just for covering up bodies. From clothing defining the uniform for most of the cliques to brand shaming to intentionally rigging even school uniforms to expose more skin, etc. there's all sorts of games being played around clothing at school.

Attracting attention from people in general, or from your preferred sex specifically, is definitely part of the pantheon of motives for putting on clothing every day, and it's clear as a bell in most schools which girls are soliciting. Teachers aren't idiots.

It's not every girl, all the time, but it's enough that there's constant haranguing going on at most schools around it, on a low grade basis.

Notes like this seem woefully utopian and naïve. Sure, yes, no one should care what you wear, but when 95% of all the nude selfies on the planet are being taken by teenage girls or young adult women, no one should be pretending that there isn't some pretty significant signaling/soliciting going on at schools.

The dress code for girls has nothing to do with boys. Even all-girls schools have similar dress codes, and are actually often more strict. Certain clothes are not appropriate for school. That goes for both genders.

I thought it was great until the last line, because I think our puritanical culture is a problem. But, I also think we are doing children a disservice if we are not preparing them for the expectations of dressing at work appropriately. It depends on the age I guess. The rules should probably be more strict in high school as they prepare to leave that school system, but casual friday could be a day of free expression or something. People do like expressing themselves through clothing.

No one should be allowed to control what other people wear, except under certain situations where the clothing is somehow problematic.

Chefs have to wear hair nets.

Factory workers can't wear loose clothes that might get caught in machinery.

If there is a legitimate reason why naked photographs are not allowed in a classroom, then allowing naked people in the classroom would also be objectionable

There are lots of people who believe that nudity is the end of the world, but personally I think that people who want to be naked should be allowed and if boys are too distracted to pay attention and do their work, then the boys should be removed from the classroom.

Seeing someone naked should not be a big deal, and the only reason it is a big deal is because of religious assholes.

A fundamental reality of life is that we are all "sex objects" once we experience puberty. Neither males nor females should be taught to ignore their sexuality or anyone else's.

Dress codes are stupid for lots of reasons. My thinking is that if your chosen outfit would be socially acceptable at a movie theater or the grocery store, it's also acceptable for school. If it's something people typically wear only to the beach or the bedroom, then it's not. Schools need to pick their battles. This one isn't worth fighting.

As a father with a teen daughter who has developed earlier than most, I can agree with this post simply because she has been sent home in two occasions for having her shoulders exposed. Her fucking shoulders. Her friend was sent home because her nipples were visible through her clothing one day and her male principle decided she needed a "thicker bra" to conceal her nipples from view. First of all, no male teacher should be training his eyes on a kids nipples, secondly, when did 14 year old shoulders become so unbelievably sexy that even teachers need to be sheilded from their wrath? First problem is that these rules are antiquated and mostly set forth by religitarded male administrators from days gone by and are grossly one sided. Men can participate in class with muscle shirts, or in physed with "skins vs shirts" only because we as men have been taught that our bodies are not sexual when exposed but female skin is something to be lusted after. Do you see tribal men in countries where women's skin is exposed acting like mating monkeys? No, they have grown up with women's skin being exposed and taught that it's a normal thing to not hide the female body. By no means am I saying teen age girls should be walking around with thier breasts exposed, but if a 14 year old girl has a little butt cheek showing or her nipples protrude through her bra into your line of sight, do you need to whip your penis out and start throwing shit around your enclosure?
