Context behind this. I'm a guy and a couple weeks ago a girl I know actually asked me out on a date. We went out and it was fun, but when the check came neither of us went for our wallets. I was under the impression that the rule, or just common courtesy, is that whoever asks the other person out is the one who pays, at least on a first date and if you don't discuss if you'll split dinner or not beforehand. She thought that I'd pay just because I'm the guy. We ended up splitting the bill and I haven't called her back. That just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm curious if I'm wrong in thinking that the person who asks the other person out is the one who should pay on the first date. Do people here, where I assume you'll be more honest, think it's just on men to pay regardless?
