The difference is those cultures don't do Stand Up, at least in the way americans understand it. I had a friend who went to japan and do a comedy event and got 0 laughs. From what he tells me the japanese just kind of shrug a lot of humor off as "american jokes" and don't laugh, but have their own legacy of comedy that works differently through different events. Even when I see something about japanese stand up its obvious they follow a totally different set of norms and conventions. This is also why a lot of americans think of japanese comedy as bizarre and incomprehensible.

Meanwhile here in the west insult comics have a legacy going back like 100 years. I've been to enough comedy clubs to not only see it live, but someone at my table take something they obviously didn't like from a comic ad libbing and cutting too close. Obviously I didn't go up and slap them, because I have the cultural context to know sitting in the front couple of rows when a comic is on stage opens you up to jokes like that, and even warn people who go with me for the first time.

The thing is Will has the same context. Hell, Will has also done comedy. Hell, Will has also done comedy and made fun of people for being bald. He's known Chris for like 25 years and Chris has made other jokes about Jada, even in the context of the oscars. Will has always been ok with this because he's a part of the same system and has done the same shit and knows how the game is played. Hell, he was laughing right along with everyone else up until he saw Jada wasn't and decided he needed to go play King Big Dick.

A thing to note about this is that after the joke, Will was laughing along like everyone else in the audience except for his wife. Then, moments later, his demeanor completely changes and he's suddenly angry.

Another reason why so many eyebrows were raised is the fact that, while he does not tolerate another man insulting his wife, he "seemingly" tolerates another man and his wife insulting/disrespecting him.

Physical assault aside, it doesn't seem like his actions are true to what he feels. It felt more like his wife was the catalyst of his actions rather than his own emotions.

This was my (American) boyfriend’s reaction as well. A lot of attitudes toward physical altercations is regional and cultural. All men here on PPD seem able to focus on is that Jada has sex with other men, despite the fact that they have an open marriage and Will doubtless has sex with other people too. Most women seem to have more of a problem with the fact that violence was involved than anything else. Personally, I don’t think there’s necessarily a right or wrong answer here, I just think it’s interesting and a surprisingly good indicator of someone’s attitudes and even political leanings. I also tend to think Chris knew he was pushing buttons.

Yes well, last night I had a moment of consummate cognitive dissonance when a person here posted a CMV in which they, coming from a TRP angle, asserted that Will Smith was a "simp" for doing what he did. It's like the ideology has come full circle now. It's no longer possible to be "alpha", because anything "alpha" is "simp" (except having sex itself, I guess, but you can't just have sex). So what can you be? Take your pick out of being simp by being beta, and simp by being alpha. I guess mgtow is the only faction that gets a pass from being simps, they are just "genetic dead ends". As for the people who claim that he is trying to become "masculine" again after being "cucked" by Jada and so on; for what it's worth, I was listening to the Breakfast Club earlier and Charlamagne had an interesting take on it. He said that Will carries the trauma of witnessing his father abusing his mother, and being unable (or too scared) to do anything about it, and that the desire to do better broke out in this situation. (Here) So, just because PPD is about sex, not everything someone does has to be about sex, and we shouldn't get tied up in trying to apply the topic of this sub as an explanation for everything. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

And a word to the people who claim that Will Smith looks "weak" and "beta" (I'm not gonna bother to copy-paste the same response under each comment individually): you gotta realize that what Will Smith looks like is not an objective fact. He looks weak to you. He doesn't look weak to me, and to every other female I've talked about this with. I respect that, there's some people he looks weak to, and some people he looks strong to. Maybe one of those views is correct, but these views don't come together as easily as simply asserting that he objectively looks weak.

Will Smith and his whole family seem like they have been dealing with a lot of emotional issues. To be honest I think Will might’ve been drunk (maybe has been drinking recently as a bad coping mechanism) and also the pressure by his wife was what caused him to snap. Not blaming his wife but rather Will himself for letting himself be so emasculated and walked over by her to be honest. If my wife is sleeping with my son’s friends, well the door is right there. Also I have to think, what kind of person is Jaden Smith to be cool about his friend and his mother being ina sexual relationship. Also the fact that Jada was like twice his age. And please don’t give me any crap about men dating younger women cuz I don’t sit well with anyone dating someone half their age.

Also I don’t believe violence is the answer… I mean just look at the reactions of the public. Chris Rock was more of a man than Will was in that situation. Will just embarrassed himself in front of the world and brought even more light to his family situation. Also I think it would’ve been a much more powerful moment if he had just come up on stage and he could’ve still done his swearing and all that but what would’ve been better if he just came up and said “not cool” and give some sort of small talk about how words can be harmful etc etc.

The thing is that this is something that happens at every oscars. A comedian roasts and cracks jokes about the audience. Very often stand up comics do this with the audience. It’s not like Will and Jada were oblivious to this. So them knowing there was a good chance they would get roasted and getting mad about it when it happens makes no sense. Why show up? Why not step out for that bit if they couldn’t handle jokes getting cracked about them? All the completely PG comedians are viewed as shit. If comedians can’t even joke about baldness, then comedy is going to die out. People in wheelchairs will get joked about and guess what? The person usually laughs otherwise they wouldn’t have been there to begin with. Yes Jada has a condition. A condition that makes her lose hair and that’s all Chris was joking about. She is literally just bald. She isn’t on her death bed with cancer or something.

I think another big portion of the reaction in the west is because of Jada’s history. She doesn’t seem like a very honorable woman. So there wasn’t really any honor for Will to defend in the first place.

I think Chris rocks joke was the last drop in the pot to make the pot boil over. But all the water that was already in the pot was from the consequences of Will and Jada putting their entire relationship on public display when nobody asked for it. Will even sort of admitted to that in his speech he gave while in tears.

If it were Amy Schumer saying that joke and Will reacted the same way, would the east still be saying will was defending Jada’s honor? Probably not. They’d be saying Will is a POS for hitting a woman. Which shows that it’s not about the joke that was said. It was about the fact that a man said it. If Will were the one that was bald and Chris made the joke towards Will, the East would be saying he’s too sensitive and needs to learn to take a joke.

I'm of the opinion and I will die on this hill that what Will Smith did for his wife wasn't in any way appropriate or alpha behaviour. It came off as purely unhinged, unstable and intellectually very weak.

It proves that he has no wit, maturity or the emotional bandwith to handle the situation without escalating it and getting out of it as a clear victor. After all, the true alpha/boss/whatever never gets into brawls when eviscerating someone with words can serve them so much better.

Hence, the appropriate response would have been a decisive verbal clap back. There are many many responses that I can think of about that dumb lame joke (Chris Rock's jokes were so basic and boring) that he could have said that would have shamed the guy and won everyone over to his side. Also, another thing to consider is that Chris probably wasn't purposefully hurtful, I think it's more likely that he had no clue about her alopecia as majority of us didn't either.

Ultimately, Will obviously has no ability to assess the long term consequences or remember the Streisand effect; again very intellectually weak (which is a big turn off, brain over brawn every day of the week). Now everyone will be dragging back to the surface Jada's private health issues and their previous marriage problems that the world has mostly moved on from.

The issue seemed to be that Jada has a medical condition that caused her hair loss. It wasn't that his wife was "joked" about, it's that Chris made a joke about his wife's public illness.

Lots of people would have an overly emotional reaction to their loved one being made fun of on national TV regarding their medical condition.

Her hair was short due to an autoimmune disorder, her hair wasn't cut short as a fashion statement.

Obsessing over women's looks, especially their hair in comedy seems like a very black people specific form of comedy, so the added layer of culture regarding hair and health in the black community probably played a role on Will's reaction.

However, all of the married men that I work with said that they would also violently react if someone made a joke about their sick wife on national television.

People would probably have a less dismissive opinion if Chris made a joke about their open relationship instead of her medical condition.

There's actually a heck of a lot more going on here wrt the appropriateness of "defending your wife's honor" vs the appropriateness of "responding to words with violence." In western circles it has been Liberals defending the use of violence against words to be justified, and Conservatives pushing the notions of free speech.

There's another difference here, and that is honor culture vs guilt culture. In the west we have a guilt-based culture, which means that people do things out of a personal relationship with their own conscience. In the east, they focus on family/tribal honor and saving face. So, something like this makes sense that you need to "save face" which is more important than sticking to a principle of putting yourself above the fray.

Context and nuance is everything, and those looking from afar in the East will have less of it. In simpler terms, a man "defending his wife's integrity, his family's honor", etc. will be justified to most in taking some kind of action. Not sure if I'd read that much further into it.

I dunno about Korean internet but for Japan's case I don't think Twitter and Yahoo Japan are great examples of the average Japanese person's mindset because of how overwhelmingly overrepresented by right-wing uyoku types they are. They're usually the loudest voices online while the more moderate people just spectate.

You'd have to pick opinions from more balanced sources, if that's at all possible. Unlike the West, social media in Japan is majority conservative by default.
