I’ve been a nurse (ER / ICU…completely different beasts) and am in STEM (generally male dominated) and I frequently wear full body PPE & PAPR…similar to military MOPP1 — in fact, I frequently work with military because my training is more specialized than theirs

I worked for the military in a security position and now I do private security work which involves being a bodyguard and on the front line. I've also worked for an engineering firm building boats and custom water craft. Honestly I love the work and I'm good at it. Many men have implied I don't belong or am better suited for an office job. But I don't care. I don't need to prove myself to anybody.

I was in the Army where I worked as a petroleum supply specialist. It was a messy job but I never minded getting dirty. If anything, my favorite times were when I got through crawl through the mud with my rifle. I would do it all over again in a heart beat.

My only concern would be the threat of rape or sexual harassment, lack of other women, and the countdown to retirement with a disability.

No, I have certain health restrictions that I have to be mindful about.

I have female relatives and just women I know working in some of these fields though. There is a women-operated farm, I know a few EMT workers and police women.

There are also predominantly "female" professions that could be called dirty. Cleaning workers and nurses are mostly women and both jobs are physically demanding and pretty dirty.

Women do most of the care industry, which is a lot of cleaning/changing people, a lot of emotional labour, a lot of physical and mental abuse, while also trying to ensure the life and health of the patient. Women’s contributions to the workforce have always been devalued. Instead of focusing on trying to push women into male dominated fields, I think our focus should be providing equal recognition and pay for female dominated fields that are often underpaid despite being vital for society (ie, care working, nursing).

The men and women who do essential roles whether it be nursing, construction, cleaning, farming etc are the backbone of society and both deserve respect and to be fairly compensated for their work.

I can't lift over 50 lbs on a consistent basis. I think that disqualifies me from most of those jobs. But other gross jobs, like working in a deli, being a hooker, or being a nurse for incontinent old people are all female dominated fields.

The majority of the jobs you mention rely on physical strength and/or aggression/testosterone. So no, I wouldn't do them because I would be playing to my weakness and not my strength and that doesn't make any sense. But I don't suffer from the delusion that men and women are the same. Equal, but not the same. When I see arguments from women that male domination of these fields is due to discrimination I internally laugh and think she's a moron. I would never say it though, because it would just trigger a barrage of irrational drivel. Women who can perform in those roles are outliers (the door should be open to them), and there are plenty of things to do men tend to suck at.

I think that conflating physically demanding and dirty is a mistake too. There are plenty of female dominated roles that are dirty, eg nursing or childcare.

I would do policing provided it was more investigative. I wanted to be a detective, but disability got in the way.

Farming absolutely.

EMT I considered, but a lot of this is lifting and dragging and with the obesity crisis at an all time high, I can't imagine I'd be much use in a crisis.

Trucking I considered and if I was ever widowed or something, I think it seems like a fun way to see the country. But as it is, I wouldn't wanna be away from home that much.

Construction, if I could go back, I'd do technical school for this. So yeah, sure.

I've looked into joining both the army and police, indeed I got into the army application process before it was decided my disability meant I probably wasn't fit for it. This problem would make the other jobs quite difficult. I don't see what's "dirty" about them though, they're not badly paid or looked down on, they're just quite physical. Feminists often talk about how male the army and police are!

Was an EMT, thought about going on to try to be a firefighter but ended up going a different route. I enjoyed it, but the lifestyle is rough on your health after a while and the pay was criminally low. There’s a reason you don’t see a ton of older medics and when you do, they’re salty as hell 😂

Planning on working in the ER now as a nurse. I’d actually argue it’s “dirtier” than some EMS/firefighting jobs… only because you have to deal with those same patients, but for a longer period of time. At least with EMS we got to drop them off and go “k they’re you’re problem now, byyyyyyyeee”

Yeah I would. Worked this summer at a meat processing plant (STEM) and spend some days using meat hooks to grab 20+ lb cuts of raw beef to then run through a dicer. 10K lbs in total each day. The smell of the blood was actually one of my favorite parts, and being a stockier built woman I had no pain with the lifting and hooking aside from in between my fingers where I held the meat hooks lol

I have a fun fact for most of you men. The job that has the highest rate of workman comps claims are CNA’s. A mostly female dominated industry. Do you know why, they lift people much larger than them to clean them, change them, feed them and general care. They also have some of the lowest pay of any career.

I made a conscious decision to go into construction because of how lucrative it is. I don’t do manual labor part of it anymore but that’s because I got into the PM side of it but this is so weird that men think that women don’t take jobs that are crappy because they are crappy.

I have seen shitty diaper blow outs and yeah I am not sure there is much worse than that.

Willing to be an EMT is not really related to being a ceo of marketing for example. However willing to be a teacher is related to becoming a principal/superintendent etc

Women mainly populate caretaking careers. So CNAs, nursing, elderly care, childcare. All the jobs that involve cleaning other peoples shit are mainly done by women. And they make a lot less money doing so.

Also social work and mental health as well, which can be scary and dangerous at times.

No...but none of the men in my family do those jobs either? And hardly any in my social circle. Last labourer on my mother's side of the family was a railway porter. Guess I could do that...I can't carry as much as a man but if we've eliminated all men that means work procedures and such would change a bit. On my father's side...house painter? I'm not great at heights due to a period of time I had repeated ear infections but I've no objection to working with paint. I'd have been willing to do that before my balance got damaged.

Back before that on my mother's side we were dairying people and the men and women of the family worked alongside each other. Yeah I'd do that if I had to. On my father's side, miners. Old fashioned pick and shovel, ladders made of timber, real 1800s shit. I'd be willing to do that for a few years but I'm a bit old for it.

I suppose realistically speaking if I had to take a gross dangerous job it would probably be at the industrial bakery in town. About 90 percent of their staff are male.

But y'know...I don't actually regard myself as being unsupportive of the men in those roles. I pay my bills. I have problem with a lock in the middle of the night, I call a locksmith, he shows up and farts round doing his skilled magic and I pull out my credit card and pay him his $250. He walks off to his van and goes to the next $250.

Oh...I just remember my mother did factory work in a cannery in the 40s and 50s. She's probably the most recent labourer in a dangerous occupation in our family. Stacking red hot cans into huge piles during seasonal rush periods to get a glut canned... including throwing them to each other to get them to the girl at the top of the stack. Incredibly dangerous and...all teenage girls and young women in their 20s hired just for the rush.

I'm a feminist and don't really care if every workspace is 50-50. That's not my goal. I care about women being in positions of corporate leadership, because companies are more profitable. I care about women being in government because political decisions impact everyone, and men that don't understand my body and are 90 years old don't know that much about me or what I need, but a 30 year old woman probably would.

Certain jobs are not considered feminine and there are multiple barriers to enter these jobs, starting from lack of role models ("I simply don't think of going to plumbing school because I have no female relatives or friends in plumbing business") and ending with mistrust from employers and co-workers ("Why is she applying for a plumber's position, is she actually technically competent and strong enough; is there something wrong with her as a women?") Girls and women are still mostly trained from early childhood to be people pleasers, not norm challengers.

I considered studying to be a mechanic or carpenter. I tried a mechanic elective, as the only girl in a class of 30. I liked the whole mechanic thing, but I would never survive with such a male dominated space. The sexism in that elective class alone had me exhausted. Pun unintended.

I could do EMT. I would be willing to do plumbing, farming, woodworking, and construction on my own private residence or to help friends/people in need. I would be willing to work dirty jobs with the proper updated equipment, safety gear and a hardworking crew that respected my physical abilities and limitations. In home building the old men with the skills slowly teach the young men skills in exchange for the young men doing the heavy grunt work. Women can not replace the young men because women can not do the heavy grunt work that the old man can no longer do.

I lived at the Osho Rajneesh ranch commune. We were a bunch of weak psychologists building a city. We enjoyed giving women men’s jobs as a gender bending joke. I had women working with me wiring new houses. There was a lot of work with screwdrivers and women were injuring their wrists using a screw driver all day long. Often I find that when this question is asked, like a recent one about women not going into oil rigging, the man asking himself had never had an oil rig job, nor had any intention to have one of those jobs. Other men holding a role doesn't make you part of the club anymore than the majority of primary educators and the gender that looks after the elderly are women doesn't give me any extra points morally. Many of the career examples would be physically next-to-impossible for someone of my size and strength to do. But i suppose I could do trucking or EMT work.

Honestly, though, I’m not interested in doing those jobs because I have my master’s degree in a field that is completely unrelated to blue-collar work, so just like anyone else (man or woman) who has furthered their education in white-collar fields, those jobs just aren’t on my radar.

Have you ever seen the videos of female cops trying to constrain a wild male? It usually takes a domesticated male in the vicinity to neutralize such a threat.

Sure, the "dirty" and "dangerous" jobs that are essential to keep society functioning like construction, resource extraction, logistics, etc... are male-dominated since it usually requires more physical strength and stamina to work those jobs.

My old, grimy warehouse job that was physically and psychologically intense had some women working in it, although they tended to be slower and were given easier positions. If it got too overwhelming, then men were more than happy to bend-over backwards to help them (only if they're good-looking.)

A bunch of comments are talking about nursing, which is definitely one of the grossest jobs you can do in a DEVELOPED nation. But in India, men are the ones who have to literally swim in raw sewage to clean it so the grossest, most dirtiest jobs are gonna be left to some down-bad male anywhere you look on the planet.

Work sucks regardless of your gender, and I don't think work is any less sucky for women as it is men. The probability of dying on the job is higher if you're a man, but is that honestly the worst thing that can happen to you?

I was licensed as an EMT, but couldn’t afford to go into it. There are quite a few women EMTs, though. I am currently a medical laboratory technician, which is still a pretty dirty, unappreciated job. I wouldn’t like the military because I don’t like loud noises; if I was physically strong enough, I could see really enjoying farming (a former dojo-mate of mine runs a CFO, with a wide variety of crops and animals; I would enjoy that, though not necessarily a modern, mechanized farm or a CAFO. I’m a vegetarian because of the latter).

This is a weird list of fairly well-paid blue collar careers, innit?

Some of these things require physical strength that is a sexually dimorphic trait, but they aren’t all universally dirty (trucking?) or particularly exhaustive. They tend to be fairly physical. But so are a lot of other jobs that are lower-paying and are much less male-dominated, such as food service or warehouse work.
