That makes zero sense. If you go on a date, you both probably want to spend time together and get to know each other. You can see paying for the other person as a nice gesture, but it's ridiculous to put this expectation on men for every date. It's more appropriate in existing relationship or between friends imv.

If a person expects their date to entertain and dine them and doesn't see a date as an opportunity to spend some good time together, they should be open about it and call it an interview, not a date.

I'm not asking a woman to wear makeup on a first date. Neither my wife nor my ex-wife wore makeup on my first dates with them and I dated them and eventually married them anyway.

I did pay for these first dates myself, but that's beside the point. I don't think the makeup argument is a good one because makeup is not a requirement for a date.

No, this is weird. Everybody shows up to dates (and to the rest of their lives) with whatever level of fashion and grooming they want. If that’s an incredibly expensive face of makeup, or hair plugs, or bespoke shirts, or a tummy tuck, or thousands of dollars of tattoos, or vivid hair color, that’s the responsibility of the person who decided to make that part of their presentation.

Paying for the first date has nothing to do with personal upkeep costs. Generally first dates should be inexpensive anyway to keep things low-pressure.

the cost of a makeup look isn’t determined by the entire product’s worth. a single product gets hundreds of uses
if you don’t wanna do heavy glam, don’t. go for guys who like you in a natural look and even a quick concealer/mascara/lip gloss combo can probably suffice
a solid amount of women who enjoy more glammed up looks also wear makeup outside of date settings because they like how they look in it. to say it’s done just for the man in question often isn’t true

I think splitting the bill is the best way to go. You don't feel pressured to do anything because he bought you dinner, he doesn't feel like you only went out with him to get a free meal. But that's just me. The whole payment thing is a good way to figure out if there's even a point in going out for a second date. If I'm out with someone, and he is super pushy about paying, and not letting me pay for my share after I've made it clear that's what makes me comfortable, there's not going to be a second date. And he probably won't be super happy with my refusing to let him pay, so nobody really loses here.

If someone thinks that doing their makeup means they should get a free meal, hopefully, they find someone who agrees with them. Personally, I'd quickly lose someone's number if they told me something like ''Lady, you're paying, do you know how much my gym membership and the protein I take cost?''.

No. Because I don't care about make up. I'm not paying for something I don't care about, and in fact actively dislike in most cases. Also, women constantly claim they wear makeup for themselves, not for men.

It's ultimately an extraneous thing which, if she chooses to apply it, is entirely on her. It would be like me expecting the woman to pay because I wore a cowboy hat to the date and I'm convinced it looks very sexy and she should thank me.

It’s totally fine if a woman wants to feel entitled to my money because she paid for other things she would’ve bought anyways, regardless of if she ever went on a date with me. But assuming I’m on a date with a woman who is genuinely interested in me, she’s probably going to be trying to present her best self to me. And if her best self includes entitlement, then what’s the relationship going to include when she gets more comfortable? If I have to pay for her makeup that I didn’t require her to wear, what else will she require me to pay for that I had no control over her choice to buy? I see no reason to date a woman like this.

First dates should be pay your own way, or discussed who will pay in advance.

But she invests so much in how she looks. Makeup is expensive!

Men invest plenty into how they look, and unless the man insists on you wearing makeup, or all of your pictures feature heavy distinct makeup, they probably wouldn't even notice.

But she is taking time out of her schedule.

On top of that, in the last couple of years, there have been a call by a few vocal women to tell more women to stop accepting coffee dates because of how "cheap" they are even though, at it's core, a first date is about getting to know someone to make sure the vibes are there.

Low effort first dates are fine as OP has argued in the comments, and most men won't regret low effort dates if the spark isn't there, but may be peeved if they dropped $100+ on date plans only to not click whatsoever with their date.

So to reiterate, if you expect a first date to be a high effort date, then both people need to show the other they are putting in the effort to be there, and the easiest way is to pay your own way.

This doesn't make any sense. There are women who don't use makeup, who use drugstire makeup, who use high end makeup. Same for cosmetics or hair products.

First of all, i am a big advocate of sharing the bill.

Second, how can a man know if the woman uses products and how much they cost.

Third, she would use a small fraction of each product as you don't slather on an entire tube of mascara in one go.

Also, a woman usually can use products, but can decide not to use any at the date. Does it still count for the shampoo she used yesterday?

Why not include the use of toothbrush or water usage now that we're here.

This TikTik is one such example. I much prefer how she looked before she put all that on. Why should I compensate for something I didn’t have a choice in? That was her decision. Just like my plate is my decision, and her plate is her decision.

I dont wear makeup much, but what i do have is luxury brands, and i use luxury products for skincare/haircare/nails so I do spend a lot on this stuff, but it just feels too invasive to be thinking about what my lifestyle costs before we've gotten to know each other.

Most importantly though, nobody is asking her to wear that makeup on a date.

Finally, the date isn't about him taking her somewhere. It's about them getting together to get to know each other. Supposedly, she's interested in him, too. So why wouldn't they both pay by default? Default should be everybody paying for themselves. If somebody wants to pay everything, that would be a nice gesture.

Though it's not why men should pay. They should pay because they are in competition with other men. So if they don't pay another man would pay and have better chances. While the one who doesn't pay gets rejected or less interest.
