I grew up thinking spouses would know every inch of each other, inside and out, backward and forward. I imagined I’d have that kind of intimacy with the person I chose to marry. And that’s partially the way it’s worked out: My husband, Eric (not his real name), knows pretty much everything there is to know about my life today — my love of Trader Joe’s mini peanut butter cups, my adoration for the Queer Eye reboot, my obsession with our cat, Sameowel L. Jackson. When it comes to my past, though, things are a little murkier.

Early on in our relationship, it was clear Eric and I had very different experiences in the dating world. If you were to put our sexual histories in ice cream terms, you could say I’ve tasted every flavor in the freezer aisle. My husband, however, has pretty much stuck to the same single pint. On our third date, he mentioned that he’d only slept with two women before me.

I didn’t say anything when he made his revelation; instead, I just nodded, mentally processing the ginormous gulf of sexual experience between us. At last count, my grand total of sexual partners was around 50. Two people! In my wilder years, I once slept with two people in one day.

According to research published a few years ago in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, the average millennial will have eight sexual partners over the course of their lifetime (that number is slightly higher for baby boomers and members of Generation X, at 11 and 10 people, respectively). For people like me, whose number is way higher, it can be hard to know what to do with that information.

So I didn’t do anything. I knew Eric had grown up in a religious household with strict attitudes about sex, and I feared my extensive sexual history could potentially cut short a promising relationship. In hindsight, I suppose that conversation on our third date would’ve been the best time to divulge my magic number, but I didn’t. And now, after seven years together, he still hasn’t asked how many people I’ve slept with. And I have no plans to tell him.

It’s not like I’ve kept him in total darkness. I’ve told him over the years about a few guys I dated, but I’ve never gone into detail about my dozens of one-night stands and smattering of other exes. And even with the ones I’ve mentioned, I’ve clipped my stories and sanitized the encounters. For instance, Eric knows I used to hook up with a guy named Billy, a fellow journalist, but he doesn’t know I once had a threesome with Billy and his girlfriend. And Eric is aware that I once went on a few dates with Louis, the guitarist of a popular local band, but I didn’t tell him Louis and I once had sex nine times in one night, or that we tore through an entire box of condoms in the process.

I’m not ashamed of these stories; I just don’t relish the conversation that would come from telling them. And to be fair, it’s not like Eric needed to know the full extent of everything from a health standpoint. I am happy to say I’d always used protection and, before Eric, routinely had STD checkups. Before the first time Eric and I were intimate, we both had a full panel of STD tests done, which put both our minds at ease.

So in some ways, I’m relieved Eric hasn’t pried into my sexual history. But still, sometimes I feel a little squirmy about keeping something from him, especially because my number of past partners represents a formative part of my life. I didn’t lose my virginity until I was 26, but once I did, it was like a fog had lifted: From 27 to 32, I was on a sexual awakening tour, determined to experience everything I’d been missing out on.

I’ve always been a curious person, and my sex life was the ultimate expression of my curiosity. My lovers were a mix of intense DJs, moody artists, hilarious chefs, and sweet-tempered teachers. None of them were terrific candidates for long-term relationships, but by being intimate with dozens of men — all with different quirks, needs, and personalities — I received a master’s-level education about the kind of mate I needed to be happy. When I met Eric, I didn’t suspect he’d be a great husband; I knew he would be, precisely because I’d been with so many different kinds of people already.

And, by the time I met Eric, in my mid-30s, I’d sowed my oats. Thanks to my slightly delayed Rumspringa, I knew I was truly ready to settle down.

As of now, my plan hasn’t changed: I don’t intend to ever tell my husband how many people I’ve slept with. It’s a can of worms that just doesn’t need to be opened. And I’ve made peace with the fact that my husband will never know everything about my past. However — and this gives me comfort — he will know everything about our future together.

Im redoing my kitchen. Just ripped out some cupboards and painted. Now need to work on the walls where the cupboards were removed and backsplash. Its was old fake bricks painted.

I have this theory about desire and seduction that's been going around in my head, and I just felt like sharing it:

First of all, it seems to me that, on some level, people want to be seduced. We all want to feel good, and we all want someone to free us of our hangups, worries, inhibitions, etc. in a way we can't do for ourselves. Life is stressful, and arduous, and full of worries, and we all desire a break from that a whole lot of the time.

Humans are social creatures. We empathize, and naturally conform to others, social dynamics, and the group mindset. I know I've certainly had someone else's horny-ness make me more horny, and really that shouldn't be surprising, because that kind of empathy is what humans do. Similarly, there should be a level on which we respond to another person's desire for us, as long as it's presented correctly. On the very rare occasion (like, once) I've gotten to do the 'look into her eyes and run your hand through your hair and make her see how she's the only woman in the world to you at that moment' thing, it didn't go over poorly. And that's mostly a function of how beautiful I thought she was; a function of my desire, which I was able to find a way to transfer a bit of over to her. At least, that's my working theory.

I've gotten into the idea of hypnotic suggestion, because I think it goes along with all this. If you can get someone open to your suggestions, you can take their brain places they can't go by themselves. Someone who has their own head getting in the way of their pleasure, you can remove that for them. At an advanced level, it's possible to tell someone, "In a moment you're going to have the best orgasm ever." and their brain goes, "Oh shit, they're so confident about that, I guess it's true." And then wind up actually having an amazing orgasm simply because you told them they were going to. That's pretty neat. I'd love to be able to pull off stuff like that...but of course I need someone to practice on.

Finally, thinking this way I find really helps me think about attraction as a good thing. There's so much "ew creepy horny men" you get exposed to as a guy, you get used to thinking of there being something bad about you finding women attractive, when really that bad of that should be the exception more than the rule. Your desire is good, because without that, no one can ever ultimately share in desire. The sad thing would be for there not to be any of that. That seems like a better mindset to have.

Kids nowadays probably don't know how it was when you were playing in the playground and around lunch you hear many moms/grandmas calling their kids through the window back home for lunch. Or kids yelling their family (usually mom or maybe sibling) to throw them something, like a jacket or a ball, and then seeing it falling down from the 6th floor. Mom said that she knew if she was yelled for by identifying our voices (because every kid just yelled "MOM").

On a similar note, the children liked to hang out and play some games on the stairs of the nearby building. The building probably had/has filled with some working telecommunications equipment. We barely saw people entering/exiting the building. I wonder how much entertainment we provided to the guard (I think he even popped up from time to time to scold us if our behaviour went overboard).

Why in todays world we have such goofy/illogical looks standards for men? I will give a couple of examples and explain why they don't really make sense IMO:

Having a visible 6 pack. It requires having really low fat percentage for a good 6 pack definition. It doesn't increase performance in any way (physical work, sex performance, the ability to fight / defend your partner, etc.). Arguably it even affects performance negatively. The reason for that is that you need to do a good cut in order to get the 6 pack (unless you are an exception with very good genetics of course) and during/after a cut you don't have much energy and you can't perform as good as usual.
Having a small waist line. Again it doesn't make sense from any point of view. Having wider waist line means bigger muscles in the area / bigger muscle cross sectional area, which on average means stronger core.
Having big biceps. It's perhaps the most useless muscle group of all main muscle groups. You do most of the pulling motions using your back muscles. Bicep injuries are one of the least impactful performance wise.

I'm sure there are more examples, but those are a few good ones to think about. Don't get me wrong, I definitely think everybody should be exercising and trying to be in a good shape for all sorts of reasons. Just those particular things don't make any sense to me and I don't understand why they happened to be one of the main factors making the male physique attractive according to women.

Looking back at the large sexless portions of my life, it's so very clear how, first of all, unhealthy it was for me. My mental health really did suffer majorly from being a horny guy constantly frustrated, and from having no physical intimate contact with people. Really, the depression and stress of many years of that probably took some amount of time off of my future lifespan.

It also probably made me less pleasant to be around than I could have been. A me that was getting laid regularly was a me who was less of a burden to his friends and family, and a nicer person to socialize with, which in turn probably would have led to more sexual success as well.

Plus, you're only young once. Spontaneous erections as your wander through the day start to diminish. The magic and excitement and joy of youth is not something you keep forever. And connected to that are the sexual experiences you could potentially have connected to that time in your life, or not. There are moments and memories that simply won't work the same way later, if you don't have them then.

These are not little things, they are major things. And that is all too clear in hindsight. It bothers me that some want to promote sex as some kind of added bonus in life, and that anyone complains about not having it is suffering from some kind of spoiled privilege. In my experience, not remotely correct, and even cruel and damaging to suggest.

I'm not sure if there is a name for it or not, but I think I'm attracted to/turned on by seeing women's genuine desire. Do you think we might get to the point where, given female economic equality or even superiority near the median, that the best basis for a relationship might be for men to mate with women who are less physically attractive than the man? This might best satisfy a female sexual selectivity and hypergamy that may increasingly start to focus on male genetics, while taking advantage of men having a lower attraction floor.

However, as you get to the top 20-30% of people, things might be different.

Why do we never discuss the problem children products of single fatherhood? It's not the same criminal type results but it still produces fucked up kids and dysfunctional adults who can't properly adapt in society, lots of personality disorders like BPD or ASPD. Ok report back on my 2 dates/hangouts planned. The first woman agreed and then blocked me (I suspect) when it was time to pick her up. I think I’m unlocked now but I’m not with the games.

This post got me thinking.

Perhaps the reason men like this are so afraid of marriage is the same reason parents don't let their kids play outside.

When I was a kid despite it being statistically MORE dangerous than today, our parents just let us outside to play often for several hours before coming home at dusk. My rule was to go home when the street lights turned on.

These days, and I'll include myself, parents are reluctant to let their kids even play on the lawn unattended.

I think this is due to our small tribe brains being globally connected. Something bad happens in Queens and despite it being very far from me, our monkey brains think of it like it happened in your town. Basically you overestimate the risk, something being done very much right now with a certain disease for example, because you keep reading stories about the very worst outcomes, often through the lens of hearsay. I recall one time in my area some mom said she saw a suspicious van, that goes on the facebook moms page here and everyone is now on high alert.

So lets take that to marriage, love, sex etc.

You don't hear guys happy with their lives posting, they have no reason to post, they make boring articles, they never heard of TRP for the most part or even stuff like PUA outside of the normal cultural zeitgeist.

But you do have people unhappy posting, complaining, warning, writing articles, doing youtube, etc.

My parents have been married over 50 years now. Lets say my dad had a youtube. What would he say? Who would watch?

But the guy married 3 times, who lost a lot of money, and now lives in a van doing videos? He has a following!

So these guys get so hung up on the worst cases, they can't even fathom success.

Add being bad with women, being a bit neurotic, and then hearing all this they sort of short circuit and think thats just how it is.

Q4W Do you think there is a good correlation between how a girl behaves IRL and how she behaves in bed? For example can you say that it's logical to expect that a crazy, loud, extroverted, outgoing, really social girl with no obvious insecurities would be relatively wild / active in bed. And the opposite example, a shy, quite, humble, traditional, introverted girl would behave in a similar way in bed?

I don't expect the correlation to be super strong, but at the same time it sounds logical if there is some correlation. On the other hand everybody's heard of those stories where the super shy girl turns out to be going all out in bed.

EDIT: Just to clarify, since I think I got some people confused. I am not asking how your partners behave, I am asking how YOU as a woman behave in bed or FEMALE friends of yours who've told you about that.

I know I speak about it a lot lately but I do wonder how the pandemic and lockdowns / restictions will have affected sexlessness and loneliness. A lot of the most recent studies on this topic seem to be around 2018ish, but none yet from 2020 onwards.. I feel like it's gonna be a pretty intense further rise.
