There aren't any ways to keep your partner if they decided they don't want to be with you anymore. It can happen both to men and women. Vetting helps, sure, but it doesn't give you 100% guarantee. People change, they quite often fall out of love or get swayed by others.

You can decrease the risks by choosing a partner who is reliable, responsible, doesn't suffer from FOMO, has secure attachment style, doesn't have a history of cheating/leaving their partner for someone else, isn't harebrained etc. You also should be a good partner yourself and take care of yourself. You still don't have any guarantee though.

There is not much you can do. I have seen women who have not " let themselves go" get traded in. I would say the attractive women who got traded in for who wanted a new partner were able to find one. Some of them were super shocked and struggled emotionally because they thought they were already doing the right things to " keep" their man.

It's hard to know what a man of integrity is like. You'll see them before you hear them thats for sure. I'm struggling to think of a time I've heard a man go on and on and on about his morals and he's actually been a good guy.

My ideas go like this: Moderate N count man. The only exception being if you're both each other's "one and only" and BOTH raised religious. FOMO is an irrational reflex from what I've been able to see. Once FOMO kicks in, a guy will cheat at the next opportunity. Maybe you'll never find out. Moderate N also gives you a chance to see his thoughts and reactions to relationships ending and how he's treated his ex's since. Great way to see integrity in action.

This one I hadn't seen in the thread next, but I find it incredibly important: IN LAW RELATIONSHIPS. Make your best effort to become close with his family once it's appropriate. Marriage is tough. Some of the most difficult parts of marriage are the boring parts. Sometimes what keeps your relationship if your spouse wants out, is their parents liking you and considering you to be family that saves it.

The whole “trade up” is laughable because what some might think is trading up ends up not going as well for them. For the sake of argument I’m not including billionaires, Leo di Caprio, Bezos, etc kind of guys. I’m going to refer to the moderately successful men who are likely to do this. If you look at many pickup artists/TRP gurus once they got around 40 (Strauss, Roosh, etc) they stop being able to pull the women they used to, get bored/find God etc and while an older man might love the attention he gets from his 20 year old secretary, once he leaves his wife who now gets spousal support, child support etc making his income a lot less and the 20 year old has to hang out with this guy outside of sexcapades he’ll quickly realize he doesn’t have much in common or she’ll cheat and leave since at 20 she has many options that don’t include a receding hairline. The man also has to deal with social fallout from friends/family, potentially work if he shat where he ate.

What im trying to say is this concept rarely goes as well as planned. The woman who gets traded assuming she takes care of herself now has a source of income, more free time (assuming they coparent- if he ditches the kids then she’ll get more financial support and the kids are probably older), and would still be desirable to some men (not super young, not “gigachads” or whatever but she’d obviously need to change her standards) since men are thirsty. My advice would be to apply the same RP principles- don’t neglect your appearance as much as possible, work on bettering yourself as appearance for BOTH sexes will fade with age, keep a vast social circle so your husband will know you’d have an easy time moving on after him, and to at least try to prevent it happening during marriage spoil him (assuming he’s providing and not cheating). I personally married someone 10 years older than me and it has worked to my advantage as if I keep it together he’ll be in his 50s and will have a harder time pulling women younger (and he hates gold diggers so he won’t pay to play) anyway :)

Going for men the same age or younger is a good bet rather than going for someone you already know is into women much younger and might only want you because of that. You also should determine however you can that the foundation of your relationship isn't based in looks or sex.

Tbh, I can't really get in the mind space of men who "upgrade," so these are just thoughts based on when I started to feel discontent in a relationship in the past:

Keep drama you bring into the relationship to a minimum. That shit is just exhausting.

Be open. The more open you are, the more he knows and the more likely he is to share.

Be someone he continues to respect and desire. This should be foundational to your relationship anyway imo, in both directions.

Don't spend your time trying to "change" him. If you feel like he needs to change, you probably shouldn't be in an LTR with him anyway. People want to be loved and respected as they are. If you're truly concerned, express that concern without judgement or expectation, and support him in changes he wants to make in the way he wants to make them.

Understand that when he gets emotional it may not be about you at all. Anger is often the only emotion we feel "safe" to display, so many negative emotions express themselves as anger. We often don't see this in ourselves, especially in the moment. This doesn't make him being an asshole okay, ofc.

The thing with young people and young relationships is the enthusiasm, ability to get crazy into different interesting things, have conversations about anything... some people when they age just end up getting so dull because they're over focused on the mundane. You meet your mistress in a bar and get drunk together and have fun while your wife nags you for one hour if you had a beer with your lunch.

Women also get tired of relationships if their men get apathetic, but this particularly critical, brutal and nagging quality I see slightly more in married women is what I think really wounds people and a new romantic interest who is the opposite of that can restore the broken ego

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion around here but I think it's important for both members of a relationship not to let themselves go. Stay fit, don't gain a crazy amount of weight post marriage. Try to meet your partner in the middle sexually or non sexual contact wise if you're finding yourselves on different pages.

A lot of problems in relationships arise when one partner simply stops trying or engaging. They let themselves go to hell physically, completely ignore their partner's emotional and sexual needs. They turn to some other past time or vice that borders on cheating because they're so consumed by it.

Most guys are not going to trade in for someone younger. This is a misconception IMO. And you can avoid that type of guy in the first place if you're cautious with vetting and acknowledging red flags.

But as others have said, there are no guarantees.

Don’t date rich men with a string of failed relationships behind them. That’s probably the best way. Most men cannot trade in their current wife for a “younger model” because young women have way better options than to go for older married man. Also most young women who deal with older men have no intention of being their one and only, they are just using them for the time being. Men are way more likely to cheat then to actually trade their woman for another (they are possessive and territorial by nature) so like I said I don’t think it’s something most women need to worry about. Oh and having his kids helps a lot, most men aren’t evil enough to put the mother of their children out, and blow up their family. Everyone wants different things as they age. The best partner at age 16 is not the best at 21 is not the best at 28. A marriage is a business relationship plus fucking plus maybe gene swap. The serious long term relationships I've seen fall apart most often happen when one partner can't keep up with the growing adult expectations of their partner. This is especially risky when you get together young and let the relationship keep going on out of fear and habit, especially if there are children early that maybe one partner regrets.

Fortunately both members of the relationship can grow and change. If you were depending on your sex appeal at 21 to keep a guy with serious intellectual or professional pursuits, maybe consider that when he's ready to have kids he's gonna want a woman who is his equal and who can give him children he can relate to. Etc etc. You can work on yourself too so you don't stagnate.

Unfortunately, sometimes people find that they just aren't compatible anymore despite constant self improvement. Values change. Stress and age change us. We develop bad and frustrating habits that are hard to break. There's no magic. Sometimes your partner loves you but doesn't think you are compatible with their vision of their future life.

I think the younger woman thing is probably less of an issue for most men. If you break up he may pursue younger women, but that doesn't mean he specifically broke up with you because you were too old. It's more likely that a long relationship that starts when you both are young will have people of similar ages but a successful older man will date within a wider range of ages of women because it increases his pool of potential partners. Of course maybe he really just wanted a younger girl to begin with, but that guy sounds like a sociopath and I pity that younger girl who is probably going to be dependent on him.

But for normal men, I think honest conversation about what they want and how they think you could improve is a good start. The biggest trap is if he is already afraid to talk to you because you get highly emotional and insecure and triggered by those kinds of conversations, in which case therapy is a good idea, the earlier the better

This has much to do with maturity, or lack of (on the man's part) and I'm a man. Not that he is some great guru, but I recently read an interview with John Mellencamp, and he said men don't mature until 40, and even then it's questionable. I tend to agree. People marry and involve themselves in serious relationships too young. People go though some significant changes during the span between 18-45. It obviously differs from men to women. I went through a stage in my life that I consorted with, dated and eventually married 15-20 years younger. Short story long, I don't really think that anyone could have done anything different that would have changed this dynamic. I have a trait or behavior that I am somewhat compulsive. At the time, my instinct was to be around younger women. I don't have a lot of money etc, so there was something that attracted them to me as well. Don't misunderstand, I got bit in the end. The woman that I married that was 17 years younger, her biological clock kicked in and she wanted kids. This eventually led to divorce.

I wonder how much of a problem this really is among adults. Sure, 20-somethings make a lot of how women past 20, or 23, or 27 are unattractive to them. I'm pretty sure they'll get settled in once they are over 30, half because they won't be in a place to trade anyone for anything, because, well, the average 50 year old man is NOT Paul Rudd, half because when you 30+, suddenly those 30 year old girls look young and delicious. But I think the most important factor is that the relationship has to be genuine. If you marry someone at 22 because she has volleyball tits, or he is a quarterback, you are bound to be disappointed.

I think getting "traded in" is something that only happens in very specific circles. I'm not old enough yet to have experienced the ability to "look beyond the outside" that many elderly married couples report. But can you imagine, say, Barack Obama "trading in" Michelle? I don't have any statistics, but I'm somewhat sure "trading in" is a ridiculous ideal that exists mostly in the brains of a few teenage and twentysomething boys. It's not how normal relationships work. People get divorced, yes. But functioning adults don't have the option, or have too much integrity, to "trade" someone they built a life with, for some rando teenage girl.

The best insurance I have seen has been to have complete control of the financial situation. Very few men are going to try leaving, if it means they lose their toys. Also, older men have a lot fewer options in younger women if they have nothing to offer financially.

I don’t fear this because I wouldn’t choose to be with someone where I think this would be a possibility… any guy who triggers that fear is likely someone who’d possibly do it. I’m intuitive and I can pick up on this. There are men I’ve met who I personally don’t get this vibe from, and then I dated one or two who did give me this vibe and I chose to end things. Moreover, men who are self respecting and don’t have tons of unresolved trauma are less likely to do this.

Another thing is to get with a man who respects women. Men who date way younger super often generally don’t respect women.

Men achieve more social status and a better financial position and what makes them attractive physically to women doesn’t go down very fast until their 50s. 80% of what women are attracted to is only attained by men in their later years except for those with richer families.

Men want to marry because they want a loyal partner who can raise their children while assisting them in the flows of life and maintaining the home. Women unfortunately have most of their fertile years way before women ever want to marry, and the thing that makes men choose a woman to see if they’re compatible (attractiveness) goes downhill pretty fast after they’re 25, but fortunately for women this is only 20% of the equation for men.

If you don’t want to be replaced, marry young, stay chaste until you marry, have lots of children, and do your best not to bother a man who works 40-60 hours a week with your side of the equation.
