I am particularly interested in your idea that feminism leading to more casual sex has caused women to be controlled in relationships by being forced to put out because they're so replaceable.
I don't know that I like it--it suggests that the prime motivation of a guy in a relationship is sex.
But in general it does raise an interesting question--are women now having more sex because they want to and are now free to do so without as much social stigma--or are they doing so because they're now expected to since others are doing so by choice?
It's an interesting question, and I don't have the answer. But I hadn't thought about things that way before.
[–]bombtrack411 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
There may be some who feel forced to, but women by their 20s do genuinely want to have sex. Suggesting they are just forced to is pretty far fetched.

[–]adelie42 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was pro-choice, and now just a very reluctant and skeptical supporter. I do not think the state should criminalize abortion, but the newspeak for compassionate eugenics is terrifying.

I fear a little bit that you are lumping in people who get abortions as a form of birth control, and women who get it because of rape, etc. I don't berate people for their stance on the issue, I just state mine. I personally would never get one, but I think it has it's use (..and not for casual birth control. there's a pill for that.)

Can't come up with your own Ad Homonym attack that you need to ask for help from the person you are trying to criticize?
For the sake of argument, "murder" may not be the right term for abortion because it is legally sanctioned (part of the definition of murder is that it is unlawful), but what is so reprehensible about equating abortion with justifiable homicide?
As far as the "lies", do you oppose the infliction of this philosophy upon people, or the idea that this is her personal philosophy?
[–]Celda 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
What is your main reason for opposing feminism? Because the movement supports abortion / birth control / casual sex, or because the movement opposes equality / harms men's rights?

Also I find it hilarious you are getting virgin shamed on your blog, if only because they are doing it so pathetically. Virgin shaming is a real issue, but they think just mentioning it is enough to be insulting.

I was with you until you started railing against abortion. Unwanted pregnancies harm men too, and behind every woman forced to carry a pregnancy to term there's a man forced to pay a huge chunk of their income for 18 years. Choice benefits both men and women.
I'm also curious why you think birth control is a bad thing? I'm so thankful that I live in a day where my partner and I can easily limit how many children we have. Are you suggesting we should only have one partner and that sex should only be for procreation? I don't think that's in any way a good thing for men's rights.
Oxytocin is released in both men and women when bonding with their partner btw.
[–]LeafBlowingAllDay -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
You may be right about the single mother thing resulting in higher crime -- but I can tell you that the legalization of abortion significantly dropped crime rates a generation later. Abortion isn't a bad thing when used properly. It shouldn't be "plan a" but if a woman is pregnant and she does not want the child or is not ready for it, which is better:
Being forced to have an unwanted child that you cannot fully support or are not emotionally ready to or
Being able to abort the pregnancy until you are ready and willing
I would go with the latter. Further, if abortion were illegal you would see an increase in self-attempts or back-alley abortionists.

Oh, sweetie. I'm sorry to be the one to have to point out that the boat has sailed on this Ann Coulter/Michelle Malkin stuff - you're trying so hard, but you're just not going to make any money off of the right-wing gravy train. I'm sure you're trying sooo hard, even if the end result isn't very good. But I'm sure it's fun for you, so, there's that.
Good for you making the most of that cleavage, but you're going to have to up your game makeup-wise in order to be someone's first wife. Odds are he'll take a few years before cheating on you, maybe.

Biologically it's not a person for the first few months, it's just a replicating bundle of tissue and nerves.
[–]Watermelon_Salesman 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Abortion can't be compared to aggression because the supposed victim is not a person. It's a mound of flesh. There's no consciousness and no developed central nervous system.
But to say shit like that I have to presume you're at the very least a vegan, since cows and pigs have at least some degree of consciousness.
And seriously, people from /r/MR, are we actually praising the views of this woman? So we agree on some points the makes against feminism. But do you honestly buy the conservative butthurt remarks about family values? Isn't mensrights supposed to be a humanist campaign? What's humanist about rallying against the right to choose?

[–]Irongrip -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What is it with you people and "the family". Fuck the family, this is not hunter gatherer society. If we wanted we could put our efforts into researching artificial wombs and better In Vitro. Then TRUE equality of reproduction would be possible, hell you'd be able to make a kid all by yourself no need for another partner. Two women -> child, two men -> child. A woman and a man -> their chosen child etc etc etc.

The difference is that I'm quoting her actual viewpoint, you are making generalizations based on her username and "pinched face"

I never argued that you were right or wrong, just that it simply didn't matter if you were right or wrong. Not only did you have absolutely no evidence either way at the time, it's also simply besides the point. Her statement is dead on, and your feelings about her political leanings are irrelevant to the discussion.
[–]giegerwasright 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
it simply didn't matter if you were right or wrong.
there goes the validity of anything you'll ever say. It's called "inductive reasoning," assfuck, and you love it when Sherlock Holmes does it. How the fuck does the intellectual mechanism of reaching a fucking accurate conclusion invalidate that conclusion? Le me answer for you, you fucking idiot. It doesn't. If a statement is true, it's valid. If it is false, it is not. The mechanism only fucking matters when you're showing your work on a trig exam.
It doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong? The fuck it doesn't. How the fck are people this fucking dim?
[–]Raidicus 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Since you're too dumb to even understand your OWN argument, let me lay it down for you using your own words
but judging by her tumblr name, I'd be willin to bet she's one of those O'Reilly and Beck swilling right wing overcompensating anti-feminists who are just as batshit as their left wing counterparts. She def has some crazy on her pinched face.
The argument: She looks crazy so I'm going to ignore everything she says.
My response: A. That's a shitty way to judge people B. Even if shes crazy, she makes a good point
The "Argument": She is crazy! See? I was justified to ignore everything she says!
My Response: Do you understand what logical fallacies are? Her craziness has no bearing on the validity of her statements.
It's called "inductive reasoning," assfuck, and you love it when Sherlock Holmes does it. How the fuck does the intellectual mechanism of reaching a fucking accurate conclusion invalidate that conclusion?
The Argument: I'm going to ignore your actual points, and instead focus on the semantics of your sentence. If I can make a straw man out of what you said, I can feel better about myself (especially if I swear a lot!)
My Response: Here let me clarify it, since you are too "dim" to fill in the blanks.
The validity of this woman's argument is completely unaffected by whether you were right or wrong about her sanity
Now that I had to spell it out for you like I would to a child, do you see how you were wrong?
[–]giegerwasright 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
At which point did I claim that I intended to ignore her statements? At which point did I even contradict her? Broken clocks are right twice a day. I posited that she may be a broken clock (and was correct) and inferred that one would be wise to take anything she says with a grain of salt. I was right about that too. So. You're pretty full of shit.

How can you "hate" communism?
[–]RevDiesel 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
How else would one hate an idea?
I don't like it's premises. I think that for the most part you should be able to keep what you earn. I prefer a more moderate approach of tax everyone but the money goes to the good of the public (transit, roads, defense, police, etc). Taking from one and giving to another is theft in my eyes.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The idea of property and value cedes to exist in an utopian community. You probably can't believe that now, neither can I.
[–]Raidicus 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Most of the time I have debates about communism it comes down to a few key ground rules that clear up most of the misunderstanding.
Question 1: Are we talking about real people attempting to create a communist society as opposed to a fictionalized population that is ideally suited for it (IE people raised to think like communists, or people who would be transitioning from another mindset) If the latter, I am uninterested in the conversation because it is mostly conjecture.
Question 2: Are we allowed to talk about the failed communist experiments in places like China and Soviet Russia or will you refuse to acknowledge those experiments as "communist". If the latter, I am uninterested in the conversation because it is mostly conjecture.
Question 3: Should people be able to decide if they participate or are you willing to force people to become communists by force if necessary? If the latter, I am uninterested in the conversation because it is mostly conjecture.
[–]EvilPundit 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Communists are like Bullwinkle trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat.
"This time for sure!"
But communism has failed, every single time. Usually with great slaughter, mass imprisonment, torture, concentration camps, and genocide being involved along the way.
It's no longer acceptable to allow these stupid ideas to go unchallenged. They always, always end in disaster.
[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Are we allowed to talk about the failed communist experiments in places like China and Soviet Russia or will you refuse to acknowledge those experiments as "communist". If the latter, I am uninterested in the conversation because it is mostly conjecture.
In that case I am not interested in discussing this issue with you. Neither the USSR nor the peoples' republic of china were communist at any time.
Communism and capitalism cannot coexist, therefore we have to get rid of capitalism in order to achieve communism.
[–]AtheistConservative 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The mother of all No True Scotsman arguments. Pray tell of a single country that you deem communist.
[–]StymieGray 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It's great on paper! Absolutely brilliant in theory. But whenever a government that uses communism comes to power, people tend to die.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well, there have been none so far. The real problem is that communism and capitalism cannot coexist.
[–]StymieGray 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
China, Russia, North Korea were all "communist", and you'll never be able to get a government to give it a try after those 3 perverted the concept.
It doesn't work that way. It's a process that will hopefully occur, maybe it will not. You can't enforce communism/utopia. That's atleast my opinion.
[–]giegerwasright -5 points-4 points-3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Mmmehhhh... yeah. You kind of are. I'm not proposing that communism is great, the big solution, or even possible, but it is worth understanding and finding valuable tenets in. Just like capitalism.
My guess is she's pissed that she didn't get enough grants for college because daddy makes too much money (and pisses it away), she thinks our economy is in the shitter because of welfare cheats (which it is, just not the ones she thinks) and that social medicine is going to take all her money away. 5th: I need feminism because I can't learn to say no or go do other things.
You have to understand that women and women alone are forced to do things under peer pressure like dancing to songs that are degrading to them. They literally (!) don't have a choice to say no because then they'll be ridiculed by their friends.
Of course as members of the male patriarchy we are immune from peer pressure or attacks arising from criticizing songs for any reason.
Like I remember one time I commented to my girlfriend that "blow my whistle" was about blowjobs and was disgusting it was being sung by little kids, and she reported back that she told her friends who said that I care too much about this shit and they don't care what the lyrics are when the tune is catchy to dance to.

I'd modify the 2nd in that women have birth control methods besides contraception. I don't look down on women who get knocked up. Contraceptive efforts often fail, and sometimes people get caught up in the moment and fuck unwrapped.

I'm not saying that women should not have access to abortions. I've always maintained that unless the technology becomes available to keep the fetus viable outside of the woman, then abortion laws should stay as they are (I'm in Canada btw). Everyone has the right to bodily autonomy, even when maintaining that right would lead to the death of another human being. If you and I shared a blood type, and I was dying of severe blood loss and needed a transfusion immediately to stay alive, I still could not force you to donate your blood.
That said, #3's sign made no mention of bodily autonomy, her point was that she was "not ready" to be a mother. I made fun of it because feminist dogma routinely dismisses that argument if it comes from a man. Even at 16, men are told "its still your responsibility, you should have kept it in your pants if you weren't ready". To think that men should be responsible for a child at 16, but a woman should not is both hypocritical and sexist.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
If you're going to use the analogy you're going to get the "well sex is a choice, whereas dying from blood loss isn't" rebuttal. You'll have to point out that even if the reason I'm dying from blood loss is because you stabbed me, I still have no legal right to demand your blood.
[–]kearvelli 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I have been searching for an appropriate analogy as to why, even if abortion is murder, it is still wrong to force someone to have that child on those premises and this is it. Fucking genius man, love it and most definitely stealing, especially since you've also prepared a response to the inevitable "well sex is a choice, whereas dying from blood loss isn't" rebuttal.
I do what I can.
[–]bombtrack411 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think a better analogy would be requiring people to undergo something risky like donating a kidney to save someone with kidney failure. Being forced to donate blood seems pretty insignificant compared to being forced to carry a pregnancy for 9 months and endure all the risks associated with pregnancy and child birth.
In fairness, my family is all pretty anti-abortion and they make the same argument against women having abortions. I would guess that most anti-abortion people believe that as well.
What really disturbs me is when pro-abortion advocates say that every woman should have a right to her body, but men have to learn to keep it in their pants.
The hypocrisy is strong with those ones. I'm really anxious to see technology come about that would make it safe to remove the fetus from the woman, and gestate it to term without relying on another human womb. That would completely negate the "my body, my choice" argument and make abortion really become a decision that both parents have an equal say in. Its pretty telling how hypocritical a lot of feminists are when I bring this up because I mention how a father could demand the fetus be gestated to term, and then the mother would have to pay child support. Generally the feminists scream about how the mother didn't consent to being a parent and thus shouldn't be forced to accept the responsibilities, and they get really frustrated when I point out how many men are forced to pay for a child they didn't consent to today.
[–]Koalachan 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'd personally rather not have more teen moms running around.
According to the CDC teen pregnancies are at an all time low. It's just media putting it in front of our faces that make us think the rates are up.
[–]Koalachan 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sadly, it is the kind of thing that will never fully go away. The best we can do is educate and not glorify like certain media does.
Are there actually countries in the western world where it is illegal to have abortion at 16?
Didn't second wavers say prostitution was sexual liberation? I know I've heard of a few old ones claim selling your body for sex should be legal.
A lot of feminists are really divided on this issue, its kind of like Catholics and Protestants. Sure they're both Christianity, but they both really disagree on what the "true" definition of Christianity is.

Unlike most 22 year old women, I listen to old music. Give me some Queen and INXS over the stuff they play on the radio.
However, when I go out with friends I am there to have a good time. Only two clubs here in Melbourne (that I know of) play 80s/90s music, which we rarely go to.
I am bombarded with "doof doof" music where the lyrics talk about everything sexual towards women. But I don't complain, yes I dislike those songs but I'm not going to take them literally. I am 100% sure Kanye West won't come to my home town and try to hit on us.

You're right that the alternative is not participating. That's what I'm getting at.
Almost every club and show charges men more money for tickets. I find that sexist and I want no part of it - so I choose to only go to places that don't have discrimination written right into their business plan. It's simple.
I'm not trying to say she shouldn't be upset at the sexism. She should be upset, and she should use her feelings to actually do something about it. I'm suggesting the correct way to alter a company's choice is to make sure they know you aren't just going to give them your money anyway. "Vote with your wallet"
I definitely don't know that she doesn't, and you don't know that she does. All we have to work with for judgement is what she gave us. Do you feel that is wrong?
The very point of writing her message on a sign to post on the internet is so that it can be seen, read, and thought about by people worldwide. The point of activism is to be controversial, to express your position to people who might disagree with you, in attempt to change the world, even slightly.
Defending a public message against public critique is a pretty odd mission, but good luck all the same.
[–]AtheistConservative 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Except there are tons of other options out there. She can go to something like a country bar that has dancing, or she can find a club that's doing techno or dubstep which generally aren't going to degrade women. Or she can go to a bar instead of a club. Or she can have friends over to an apt to dance.

And it also is full of images dehumanizing and degrading to men to.
I know every time I hear Taylor Swift come on the radio it makes me feel great to be a guy. What about popular songs such as Before He Cheats or Shoulda Put A Ring On It? Half of the songs by Pink?
Point is there stuff that is degrading. It isn't one-sided. It is popular with people. The popularity isn't one sided.

No it's not. Nobody is forcing her to dance to anything. If people didn't buy it, listen to it, dance to it, it would stop being played in a hurry.

If the people in the club clearly didn't enjoy the misogynistic rap songs they wouldn't play misogynistic rap songs. Instead of not going to clubs that play such songs or clearing the dance floor when the song comes on she perpetuates it by taking part in it then complains about herself.
[–]MartialWay 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm arguing the point SHE made in her sign. I think "stay at home" could have easily been "go to another club that doesn't play music you don't like" or "read a book" or any of another activities that don't involve you dancing to music you don't like. Or just have a seat when shitty music plays like the rest of us. She's claiming she is being "forced" - simply not true.

Having an STD means, as a general rule, that you did something epically stupid. Either you had unprotected sex with someone who had an STD, or you IV drugs. Usually, you did this several times.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
"Little known falsehood" would be a better way of putting it. A razor would only spread HIV if both users cut themselves. Toothbrushes would only spread HIV if both users had open sores in their mouths. I have never ever heard of anyone getting HIV from a toothbrush or razor. It's just too unlikely that a person would share those and that conditions would align to spread the disease. Sexual activity is by far the most common way HIV is spread in the world.

Yes, we know that. But just like getting a DUI only takes one time driving under the influence, chances are they got a DUI because of an established pattern of driving under the influence, that they got away with until they got the DUI (STI, in the analogy).

Herpes currently affects around 20% of adults in North America. Roughly 80% of these people will never show symptoms, and thus will never become aware that they are infected. The disease is still, nevertheless, communicable in this state. If you've fucked more than a few people, you've probably been exposed to herpes. You might even have it yourself. STIs happen, and not always because the parties involved are being stupid.

FTFY
We don't force women to become mothers if they don't want to be, even if they make a mistake, or lots of them. Women get to choose not to be mothers. Women get to choose for men, too, even if the man made no mistake. That's the primary issue.
[–]Stratisphear 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
That's what I'm saying. We shouldn't force women to be mothers. And the societal view is that the man made a mistake by getting get pregnant, and he should pay for it.
[–]girlwriteswhat 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Mistake has nothing to do with it, really. He can literally make no mistake and still not have an out. She can intentionally get pregnant, then change her mind and abort. She can lie about being on the pill, and still choose whether to be a mother or not.
It's really not about mistakes.
What it is is a pervasive view that men do sex to women while women have sex done to them, that men get women pregnant while women are made pregnant by men, that men make women have babies while women have babies just happen to them.
When you look at men as agents and women as objects, you dish out accountability accordingly. He could literally have made no error, while she makes a sequence of unilateral choices, but he's still seen as having done that to her. Even the language: "by getting her pregnant". Why not, "the man and woman both made a mistake, and she chose to remain pregnant and keep the child"?
Why not? Because it's not the way society thinks about men and women.
[–]Stratisphear 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I completely agree with you. That's what I'm trying to get across.
[–]saracuda 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Something I've never really understood when browsing MR... What do most of the MRAs believe is a rational solution to this issue? Obviously it's an issue; females currently have a way to control what the outcome for her body is, men don't have a say in the abortion topic - I'd like to hear some solutions for this, because I'm stumped.
the societal view is that the man made a mistake by getting get pregnant, and he should pay for it.
Fix:
"the societal view is that a man is irrevocably at fault for not controlling sperm that exits his body"

So, assuming that within a year span you have sex between 50 (roughly weekly) and 100 times (roughly ever third day), you have a very good chance of a failure of the condom.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The typical use pregnancy rate among COCP users varies depending on the population being studied, ranging from 2-8% per year. The perfect use pregnancy rate of COCPs is 0.3% per year.[6]
Summary pill: If you can't even follow an instruction as simple as taking one pill a day, you have between 2-8% chance of being pregnant. If you take your pill every day you will not be pregnant.
Summary condom: If you are stupid enough to crack the condom and not feel that it is broken and continue anyway, you have a 15% chance of being a dad.
[–]tyciol -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Why are you calling someone stupid if they lact the tactile sensitivity in their penis to be able to tell if a condom breaks?
Most circumcised men are comparatively insensitive, why blame them for being unable to tell because they're victims of genital mutilation?
Only consenting Jew-converts should get that blame.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Condom breaking happened to me once, and if you are not completely retarded, you take your ass to CVS, and you buy a morning after pill.
Thought Men's Right was about denouncing feminism, which makes women irresponsible for everything. Well let's lead by example.
[–]will4274 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
you can buy the pill but you can't make her take it.
oh, and even if you buy the pill, she can make you pay for the baby.
My point is, it's not dumb to not feel a condom break. It's irresponsible not to check the condom for breaks after you're done with it (and drop it in a beaker of acid for good measure).
That said, sometimes guys fall asleep afterward. It's not stupid to succumb to fatigue.
[–]tyciol 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The failure rate of condoms is probably including tears.
When a condom tears, this gives physical signs where you can react and be all "holy shit it tore, take this morning after pill!"
Unlike the failure of pills, which you mostly find out about when you start vomitting.
[–]Stratisphear 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
We're talking about #3, pregnancy and abortion.
[–]evilbrent 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
But even a 0.01% chance is a pretty big chance - that's one in every 10,000 condoms, not an inconsiderable risk.
That's not how the rates are calculated.
[–]evilbrent 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The point is that a hell of a lot of condoms get used. It would be in the order of millions or tens of millions of condoms used each night in America alone. even at incredibly high failure rates it's still a lot of failures.
I remember reading about Motorola's insane quality standards back when they were a premium phone brand. It was something like the acceptable failure rate was one in two million components down the line - that's a 0.000005% failure rate. And they were doing that for a REASON, not just to make themselves feel better. They knew that at the rate they were spitting out phones even at that rate they'd have hundreds or thousands of phones out in the marketplace failing left right and centre. If they had a 0.01% failure rate they'd have hundreds of thousands of phones failing.

I don't see how abortion is a reason you need feminism, at least not in the US. Abortion has been legal since the 70's and despite republican bullshitting, that isn't changing any time soon.
[–]tyciol 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If the lack of ability for women to have abortions is a reason to have feminism, the obligation of men to pay child support is a reason to have men's rights.

For 3, I'm not willing to look at it in black and white. However, if 16 year old you wasn't smart enough to use contraception, 16 year old you shouldn't have been having sex.
[–]wrestlingspikes 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
But at the same time the contraceptive could have failed. It really is black and white because of you aren't ready for the consequences of your actions, you shouldn't be participating in those actions. Furthermore, if you view pregnancy as a consequence, you shouldn't be having sex in the first place without taking extreme precautions.
[–]Miss_Logic 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
This does not mean that it is always easy to get. Nor is it ever easy to do emotionally. Pressure from the family, the father and society play a role in why this girl chose to follow through with her pregnancy.
Forgive me if I come off as rude, but I am starting to get rather upset at people thinking that abortion is an easy choice for a women. Even if it is the right choice.
[–]Miss_Logic 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I see. But it is still true that the post-coital is no where near as simple as the pre-coital. The post-coital are often overlooked because of their nature. Also, you should not assume that termination was available to her. Not because they were illegal but for other external factors.

[–]tyciol 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't agree that people who don't use contraception shouldn't be having sex.
I'm fine with people having sex without contraception so long as they have abortions if they get knocked up.
[–]mythin 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't really want to get into a debate on where abortion fits into the family planning options. Your second sentence seems odd to me:
so long as they have abortions if they get knocked up.
Are you suggesting there's some way to ensure this happens? If a 16 year old isn't going to use contraception, do you think they should be trusted to choose an abortion? Or are you saying that teen pregnancy is acceptable?
Abortions should be available for everyone, especially minors who aren't in a position to be raising children. Obviously in their case it's ESPECIALLY more preferable to avoid the pregnancy in the first place though.
If we're going to take that whole 'omg a minor can't consent to surgery!' stance, then doctors should consent to it by default for them, seeing as how many parents might oppose it on religious grounds to their child's detriment.

[–]LupoBorracio 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The problem is... #4 is kind of valid.
Mitt Romney didn't exactly show promise to women's rights.
And so I don't get flamed/downvoted... feminism =/= fighting for women's rights. At least not anymore.
[–]Wulibo 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
As appalling as Romney's views towards groups like women and homosexuals are, there's no way he'd get away with anything major against either group without massive uproar, and there's not much risk he'd push human rights that far back. There are much more relevant issues that will actually be affected, and those are the ones the poster's roommate probably had differing views on.
My best friend is a conservative voter, and I've had a lot of interesting talks with him. Thinking that worldwide competitive economic strength is important, and governments should try to lightly encourage competition while not interfering, focusing on such things and the wealth of the individual as opposed to social welfare, does not make someone a bad person. In my opinion, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, but that doesn't make me superior to my friend.

That being said, number 1 is the one that irks me the most. :P
I don't understand why a men's center would be wrong. Or why someone can't see the blatant hypocrisy.
Any exclusive club is going to be divisive. I always used to think it was funny how we were allowed to have a Black Student Union on campus, but there would be outrage if I tried to start a White Student Union.
But why not?
It's like the taxi in the UK that women started, which only accept women customers, because they are afraid that they might get raped by a male taxi driver.
Imagine if we started a white-only taxi company because we were afraid we might get mugged by black customers. Good lord.

My post from the /r/rage thread:
The first image really pisses me off. The kind of people who think men have it all good in this world are simply fucking retarded and have no excuse for thinking it. Men make up the majority of homeless people and the majority of violent deaths. We also take nearly all the positions of the worst jobs in the world (something like 99% of the worst jobs in the world are held by men, don't quote me on that because it's probably wrong) but people still concentrate on the top 100 people or so who are CEOs and say "look how good men have it!".
I'm angry, but I guess this is what I should expect from /r/rage.
It's the really wealthy who control everything and have all the privilege and power. People like Gina Rinehart are what people should be whining about not male CEOs who worked hard to get where they are and enjoy their success and probably do more for charity than most billionaires combined.

I find that a lot of these "I need feminism because..." things are often really lame. How about "I need feminism because, in my country, I'm not allowed to vote or drive because I'm a woman"? I don't see what feminism has to do with that. Why DON'T we have a men's center? Are we not as important?
Why would anyone be proud of that? Sure, you shouldn't be shamed for it, but why be proud that you now have some serious condition? And again, what the hell does it have to do with feminism?
I'm like a broken record because WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH FEMINISM? If you had sex with him, you're both at fault. If you didn't consent, he may be at fault but what does that have to do with rights? It's a legal issue.
I can sort of see how feminism comes into this one, but really? Unless your roommate has some agenda against you, why is that a big deal? Romney had terrible social views, but he had a few good policies. Maybe they just agreed with them.
What? What does that even... what? Who the hell is forcing you to dance to bad songs with a gun against your head?
What does it have to do with feminism? I mean what... what does it even have to do with feminism? That has nothing to do with rights! They strip willingly! They could be a cashier or a waitress or anything with equal requirements. Who are you to say they can't do that if they want to? And what, like they aren't competent enough to make their own decisions?
[–]Aerithia1 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'd like to make it as simple as possible to see everything I don't like in this, by number the pictures in order of appearance and then simply pointing out the bullshit.
1. - Why don't they have a men's center? how about you ask yourself that question, then taste the horrific juicy goodness of a red pill.
2. - having an STD is a badge of honor? I should see what my friend who has herpes thinks about that. She'd kick the shit out of you.
3. - 16 year old you should have had a condom handy. If you REALLY don't want to get pregnant, you won't, or at least, have a ridiculously small chance of getting pregnant. Unplanned pregnancies are the results of people saying 'It won't happen to me.'
4. - Who gives a shit who voted for who? as far as politics goes, everyone will get fucked either way. Someone disagrees with your left wing views and your first response is 'FUCKING MISOGYNIST' that shit happens in Australia, and seeing as I plan on migrating to the U.S I'd rather not see that horse-shit.
5. - No one forces you to dance to them.
I know far more women who listen to, dance and by albums with songs that talk about asses and breasts and what-not than I do men. They play music that people want to hear. Don't like the music? leave the club.
How does the song degrade you? like, personally degrade you? It doesn't. fuck off.
6. - So you don't like strippers, prostitution or pornography? huh, It's really funny how I see a lot of feminists who are like that. You don't like strippers, prostitution or porn because some people are forced to do it. My question is, why don't you back tougher laws and task-forces to help stopping sex trafficking as opposed to campaigning against prostitutes and porn. That fixes nothing.
Fuck I hate people some-days.

Not really. Clubs are about making money. The way they do that is get people in the door and buying drinks. If they're staying in business, it's because they get enough customers. So surely people are okay with the music. If she isn't, she should leave. When enough people do that, they place changes what it does so people return and it stays in business.

Wrong. This is the definition of a feminist. And the definition of feminism.
Feminist Noun A person who supports feminism. Adjective Of, relating to, or supporting feminism.
Feminism Noun The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.
If all they are doing is wrong and saying its okay thanks to feminism because they are female, that is not feminism. That's stupidity. It's about equality not special treatment. A lot of people get feminist mixed up with "fem-nazi".

It's up to each individual feminist to define what feminism means to them.

A lot of people get feminist mixed up with "fem-nazi".
Some feminists are fem-nazis, and some fem-nazis are feminists. Think Venn Diagrams here.
P.S. If feminism is about equality, then why isn't feminism either trying to get selective service abolished, or pushing for a requirement for women to sign up as well? Why are the fighting equality laws in the family court system?

6) She believes that until she gets offered the right sum. Then the mental gymnastics start.
Femenists really are lost in their own naval gazing self justifying narcissism. We aren't going to move forward an inch as a society until they cut it the fuck out. And they won't cut it the fuck out.
I couldn't agree more.

I think 3 is directed at states that want to remove funding for condoms under various Republican efforts (which is also what #4 is aimed at). It's hard to make positive decisions for your sexuality when you can't afford to.

I have never understood why women dance to those songs. I don't like to. They suck and they are insulting. I can sympathize with finding them insulting, but if you don't like them don't dance.

I need feminism because I love video games but am sick of the sexist portrayals of women in them
How about the sexist portrayals of men in them, you know big buff muscular men and stuff like that...

[–]Puglug 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
how the fuck would you contribute to this "rape culture" without even knowing it? Oh I guess by just being a man you are contributing to it?
Anytime I see those kinds of guys holding signs talking about "rape culture" and other made up shit I just think of "hey look I'm fighting for womens rights now please let me stick my dick in you".
[–]Lecks 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Personally, it seems to me not all of those men do it just to appease women. Some probably have a very negative view of themselves (and men as a whole, by proxy) and truly believe there's a monster lurking inside them waiting to lunge out at any moment. I feel really bad for those guys, as infuriating as they are they deserve pity.
If you repeat a lie enough times, people will eventually believe it. Don't know who said it but it does seem to ring true.

[–]Amunium 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Me too. Maybe she's the only one "understanding" it because it's fucking stupid. Voluntary prostitution does not condone forced prostitution any more than any other work condones slavery.

Can I hear the argument against number 6? Is it just worded in one of those ways that's drawing an illogical conclusion? I mean to a certain degree it is, in that it assumes there's a male hivemind, and that by perusing prostitutes, human trafficking is promoted, but there is a link, no?

This is a good point. What #3 is really about is states defunding birth control as a covered medical expense. They view this as a women's issue, because it impacts whether or not they can control their pregnancy. However, it's really just a gender-less issue about supporting the ability for all people to control their pregnancies using birth control (condoms, pill and hopefully the male pill one day soon). They're turning it into a women's issue when it's not really, but it's still a valid issue.
[–]Zosimasie 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's actually about people not using contraceptives. I've known teenagers who were being a bit dumb and didn't use contraception, and, oops, pregnant at 15. I've also known teenagers who weren't being dumb and decided not to fuck if they don't have contraception. This is more about people not taking responsibility for their actions. Saying, "I got pregnant at 16, it's someone else's fault for not providing contraception" is pathetic and laughable. It's the person's fault for being a bit dumb about it.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

[–]pdidty -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Because there exists things called "condoms" and "pills." Not to mention that she probably wasn't forced to have sex.
[–]titania86 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You are assuming she didn't use contaception and wasn't raped, which isn't specified here. Accidents can still happen. Contraception is not 100%.
[–]pdidty 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yes, but it's not a women's rights issue. It's just an unfortunate fact. No advocacy group can solve that. Only science can.
It's considered a women right issue because she carried that baby to term and she doesn't get to walk away. Not to say that all men do walk away, or that it isn't hard for them to do. but the situations are different and are not really comparable to each other.
[–]pdidty 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And what can we accomplish? Ban sex? All we can do is promote contraceptives and educate people about risks.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
At 10 years old I would assume it was forced, as I don't think many kids have a working knowledge of sex at 10, but you may be right.

I have an issue with #1. The women's center is there for yearly gynecological exams as well as yeast infections and other health issues that only affect women. Considering wait times for these appointments often need to be weeks, if not months, in advance suggests that it's not that bad of an idea to have it separated from general practice.
What, out of pure admitted ignorance on the topic, would a men's center be necessary for?
[–][deleted] 24 points25 points26 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Men's health.
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'd think that a men's center would be for the following:
I would be much happier if I had to go back to a college, knowing that both sexes got equal attention when it came to these things.
[–]namrettik -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
For mental counseling, I don't see the point of having separate gender buildings. My boyfriend and I have been treated by both genders for our depression, my anxiety, etc. Never witnessed gender-based diagnoses. The issue here may be culture in general; men "aren't supposed to have emotions," and admitting to mental illness may be viewed as being less "manly."
guys can get yeast infections too
Yikes. With gender-based physical somesuch, I can totally understand separate facilities.
"For mental counseling, I don't see the point of having separate gender buildings. I get the non separation, however, I don't know that men can be treated at a "women's" center... which is why I included it :).
Yeah, thanks to Weeds, I know that guys can get yeast infections. I can't even imagine the pain :|.
[–]giegerwasright 10 points11 points12 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Guess why many men go without simple medical treatment for years while treatable conditions develop unchecked.
[–]mythin 11 points12 points13 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Wait what? What women's centers are you talking about? I've never seen a women's center that had any nursing or physical health services involved.
Of course, me not seeing or hearing of something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Assuming you're right, that's a valid reason for a women's center.
If what you're saying is true, than the same thing, but focused on male issues. A place to go if you have male specific sexual health issues. Prostate exams, erectile dysfunction, or really anything. Men are stereotypically bad at getting regular checkups. A center that specifically catered to that and worked at removing the stigma / time investment would help men be healthier, and learn healthier habits earlier in life.
If we're talking for non-physical health issues (like all the women's centers I've heard about), then "the same" still holds true.
[–]namrettik -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Every building I've heard called a "women's center" has focused on physical health for women. Perhaps different areas have different names for these centers. shrug
That makes sense for prostate exams or anything dealing with male genitalia. The main reason women go for their yearly checkups more regularly, from my experience and other women I know, is that we are only given a one year's worth prescription of birth control, even if we don't actually need another physical exam for two years.
[–]ottawadeveloper 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The women's center on campus here also provides a counselor dedicated to women's issues and has numerous pamplets and flyers talking about everything from abortion to HPV to legal matters. It's more like a resource center for women than a health center.
I have to admit, the LGBT center still exists as well, but I think the issue with that was that, up until very recently, abuse against LGBT members was a problem, so they're designed as safe spaces for LGBT (and women).
From that perspective, a men's center would be designed as a safe space to discuss issues that men have a hard time dealing with, like ED, prostate cancers, dealing with false rape claims, paternity problems, etc. A counselor that would help them with all those things would also be very useful.
I'd love to combine it into one center but, from what I've seen, many of those issues are divisive (like LGBT and women's issues) so it makes sense to provide some kind of safe space for open discussion.
[–]SageofLightning 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
councilor and/or therapists? although I doubt many college men would have the insight to know when they need professional help.
I've never witnessed separate facilities for mental health based on gender. Location, maybe?
[–]SageofLightning -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was just guessing. I don't really know of any service that would benefit from being separated like that for men.
[–]Zosimasie 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The sign specifically says "college's women's center". College centers are generally not about health issues. College women's centers are generally just brooding places for feminism.
[–]ottawadeveloper 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Prostate exams, men's sexual health, homosexual sex topics specific to men.
I see your point that it may not be necessary, but I don't think calling it a "woman's health center" works very well. Why not just have a health center and have staff dedicated to doing gyno exams so that the wait times aren't as long?

[–]JFEC 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I know that this has been said in a needlessly inflammatory way but there is some truth to it. There are plenty of women who are perfectly fine with being treated like a child and being patronized if it helps them. But when it doesn't, they flip if you treat them like that. However, they are either going to be treated like an adult or like a child, they can't choose whichever they prefer depending on the situation.
I have just taken to saying 'Are you serious? You are an adult". and it works surprisingly well. I guess most of them don't even realize what they are doing. Or maybe they do and they feel embarrassed when you point it out. Well, what do I know.

This is a Perfect example of just how pathetic most women have become.
this is what happens when men allow women to act like pathetic children for all of human history... never telling them to grow up and babying them instead... we get sexist pathetic women who are not able to use even small amounts of logic in male - female matters
we really need to teach little girls young to learn to use self controle and logic... as it is clear that they dont devolped this abbility on there own like men do... so we will have to teach women how to grow up our selves then.
obviously not all women are like this.
but most females are just as pathetic as the women we see in these images.. and thats what matters.
