This is so common in some Asian countries!! The ladies Cook, serve the men in household warm meal (the men want the bread just off the stove, not even a minute old), stand nearby the table with bowed heads while ensuring the men have glasses n plates full. Meanwhile, the men judge and berate any tiny flaw. The women then clean up everything and sometime after get to eat leftovers.

This reminds me of the time when we were at a family gathering and my sister and I were fixing up plates to give to people and when someone gave my aunt her plate she said "oooh it feels nice to be served" because she's always the one fixing up plates for her husband and it made me so sad to hear that.

To be fair, it probably takes an ungodly amount of effort to stand up, walk to the kitchen, lift up a plate AND add food to it. Wow, this is some next level entitlement.

I thought the household I grew up in was archaic because my mom cooked most meals and the only things my dad ever cooked were the meat portion usually on the grill, but sometimes he cooked steak in a cast iron pan when the weather wasn’t permitting. He also cooked scrambled eggs for Sunday breakfasts. My mom always cooked the veggies and side dishes and if it was anything other than steak or things that could be grilled, (so, most nights) she cooked the whole meal. My dad always carved the meat portion and plated it for everyone right at the table, then we’d pass around the other stuff and all serve ourselves. When my siblings and I were little of course a parent would portion everything out for us, it was so long ago I don’t even remember which one, probably my mom, but that stopped as soon as we were old enough to do it ourselves. The point being, my dad always had to serve himself and with some dishes he was the one serving everyone else, and growing up in the 1990s I thought that was outdated and sexist because the man had to be the one in charge of the meat 🙄 He’d instruct me and my brother about how long (or not) to cook it so it was perfectly medium rare, and to let it sit covered before cutting it so the juices had a chance to absorb back in, etc.

This whole idea of the women doing everything for their husbands just boggles my mind! Like, aren’t they embarrassed demanding to be treated like babies or the infirm? It’s cringy enough when a man has to make a big show about how capable he is, but the opposite end of that spectrum just has me aghast.
