I guess once a month, it’s hard to quantify since I go out very sporadically since the pandemic. But as the top comment said it’s mostly hostile sexuality not flattery. This type of interest is less about being attractive and more about the combo of living in a big city + looking young/approachable.

Genuine flirty interest is much more rare because this happens within social groups, and since I’m obviously married decent men aren’t going to make attempts.

I had a man hit on me based on a TikTok video of a barn I was building, recognized the scenery and realized I was 3 towns over from him roughly the same age and gasp could build a barn. I can get pretty talkative, approachable and flirty at parties when I drink and when I go out. Usually I don't get hit on in sober scenarios but that's probably cause I'm way less approachable and open and talkative when sober, so I pretty much get hit on every time I party and am in a good mood as lots of guys probably find it easy to hit on me when I'm drunk. I don't party that much, so it doesn't happen that often and I usually don't mind being hit on as long as people respect my boundaries and respect it when I don't show I'm interested. I also don't dress very feminine outside of when I dress up for parties, and my style is very uni sex which I also think is a part of why I don't get hit on outside of certain settings. If I went out every weekend then I'd be getting hit on every weekend but I don't cause drinking every weekend is exhausting and also expensive. Like I mentioned, the way I dress has an impact on who I attract.. I usually don't have to deal with unwanted attention due to the way I dress normally. I also have short blue hair and I don't wear dresses or anything feminine daily, which limits both positive and negative attention but honestly I don't care as I don't need the attention or validation from random strangers anyways.

So I wouldn’t say I get “hit on” that often. If by hit on you mean a man asks me out or for my number. I do get commented at (about my appearance) stared at in an intrusive way (esp when wearing workout gear that’s form fitting) and catcalled (yelled at - hey mama, how u doing etc) fairly frequently though. I am decent looking but don’t wear revealing clothes or play it up in a way that may suggest I’m interested. I feel mostly ick when it happens and sometimes that it’s disrespectful but I’ve accepted that it’s just part of life. I’m told in another 10 years I’ll miss the attention (?)

Its less about your looks and more circumstantial. You can be a supermodel and never get hit on if youre a recluse or have no social media or only go out with your husband/bf. In my 20s, I was constantly hit on and it was actually traumatic. I have PTSD from it because when I’m on public transport, whenever I see young men walking towards me, I immediately think he’s going to come and sit next to me and make me feel uncomfortable like I felt in my 20s. They would get verbally abusive if I didn’t tell them my name or give out my number. They were almost always undesirable. I feel relieved to be more invisible now.

In my 30s, I don’t get hit on as much for the following reasons: - I don’t go out as much as I did in my 20s and I’m more likely to visit quiet places and take an Uber instead of the train. - I don’t think men cold approach as much as they used to because we have online dating now. - it could be because I “hit the wall” as I’m sure the guys in here would gleefully tell me but I’m pretty, look young and I do well in online dating.

It depends where I am. If I am just in my town going out and about, maybe once or twice a week but it’s usually very subtle. If I venture off to the big city to hang out with friends or to go to work, it’s basically guaranteed that some male attention will happen. But I’ve also been to big cities where women aren’t hassled so much, so I think it really depends on the area. Paris sexual harassment is at 100 percent, Rome sexual harassment is maybe like 50, Seattle is 70, the best place I’ve been too was Iceland but their ‘big city’ doesn’t feel very big to be honest. When I was commuting to work (public transit + walk in a city) I’d get hit on or sexually harassed a couple times a month. The bus/train has always been a place I’ve gotten men approaching me, I guess because I can’t escape. But also I used to walk my dog on my lunch break at work and I’d get hit on at the park, or if I went to a bar in the evening men approach me (they’ve even done so when I’m with my husband). Now I’m pretty much not on the street or on busses or trains and rarely in a public place without my husband, plus I’m 39 and getting older reduced it a lot even before WFH. I had the most harassment when I was a teenager, like when I had a summer job when I was 15 and took a bus into the city every day I’d get hit on near daily.

Besides being in a metropolitan city, I believe a big reason I got so much is before surgery I had a few years ago I had a body shape that attracted a lot of attention, not just from men, but women would usually just stare (or ask questions in bars), most men would stare but some would yell gross things at me or ask for my number. I still got an occasional man on the bus hitting on me after surgery, but it was reduced, and I didn’t do it too long before Covid happened, I pretty much haven’t taken a bus since.

The majority of times I've been "hit on" is by drunk guys in bars, so it hardly even counts. Since I rarely go to bars anymore, it happens far less often. It's also happened a few times at meetups and other social events. Very rare for a man to cold approach in the light of day. In fact, I can't even recall the last time that happened. I've been told I come across as timid (I prefer shy), so I think men see me as approachable, but I'm not nearly as easy to manipulate as they hope.

I used to never experience being approached in public despite being conventionally attractive, I would get catcalled occasionally by men in cars or creepy old men etc. Other than that the only places I’d be hit on was by men at clubs, bars and parties. Around the age of 19 something shifted my personality and demeanour changed. I became more confident and less closed off, I grew out of a lot of social anxiety and self consciousness I dealt with as a teen.

Since I turned 19 (I’m 22 now) I now get approached in public by a stranger maybe every two months or so. When it happened at first I was in a doctors waiting room and couldn’t figure out what he wanted from me. I thought it was the strangest thing ever and didn’t know how to respond, so I ended up giving my number to him and never replying to his messages.

It’s happened since while I’m walking down the street, at the library, in a shopping centre at the supermarket etc. Usually I’m not interested but I’m generally nice to them if they’re nice and respectful of me and I’ll tell them I have a boyfriend (I actually do) or I’m in a rush.

I moved to a city at 18 for college. I remember one time I was walking maybe 15 mins to a boba shop and got catcalled 7 times. I was so irritated and scared. I felt like I couldn’t go out by myself and often, I was advised not to.

It depends on who’s just out that day. Sometimes it’s a lot, sometimes not at all.

Usually, it’s about once a week, I get unwanted sexual attention. Whether it’s at a bar/club, walking on the street, or at a frat party. It’s gross.

You don’t have to be a model to be catcalled or have forced sexual attention on you. Please don’t insinuate that.

You just have to be in the presence of someone who thinks it’s okay to behave that way. And who decides to behave that way towards you. I’ve been spit on, shoved, assaulted for rejecting a man. I’ve had them grope me, try to force me to kiss them, try to pull me in rooms, etc.

There was a time in the early nineties when sex toy selling parties were all the rage...like selling Avon but with lingerie and vibrators and if you sold enough there was a free male stripper. Anyhow I was always the one chosen for that move where he grabs someone's hand and straddles the wrist facing outwards to the rest of the audience then grinds. IDK. Maybe I just look too harmless?

I'm in my early fifties by the way and vaguely concerned at this point that when I get old enough for dementia and end up in an aged care facility I will be target number one on any pervert staff members list.

It's very dependent on the location.

Harassment is INSANE in new york. In London, not so much.

Also it happens more in some streets and clubs than others.

I get hit on the most in big cities. It will happen several times in an outing. When I go to more rural areas it’s not as frequent and the men are no where near as aggressive about it. At worst they’ll ask why I said no or if I’m sure. In big cities though they’ll keep pushing and pushing, some will start trying to follow me, or they’ll start getting aggressive and run up on me etc. So I think it’s just a regional thing. Men in rural areas are much more polite about approaching, much more willing to accept a no and they respect relationship status. Men in the big cities I’ve been to will keep trying no matter what glaring red flags you tell them you have.

When i used to run along roads more, especially in a city, guys honked or yelled stuff to me pretty often. I don’t consider that ‘getting hit on’ though, as obviously these men don’t actually expect anything to come of it. It’s just harassment for sport i guess. When i lifted in a gym, guys talked to me all the time but didn’t overtly hit on me all that much (now i lift in my basement). When i waited tables i got hit on overtly once a week or so, and definitely gawked at/flirted with daily.

I also used to get hit on more when i was with my ex. I think people didn’t realize we were together? I never get hit on when out with my current partner. Also now I’m early-thirties and wear an engagement ring and do not work a public-facing job. And i rarely go out without my partner.

I think a lot of the women here exaggerate things that men do, in order to paint men in a bad light and make men seem far worse than they really are.

If you believed women here, you'd think that all men are rapists who cat call and stare at women all the time and think about sex 24/7. Their idea of 1 unattractive man staring at them once a year = men staring at them all the time.
