There are many theories out there about why, such as being physically weaker and being unable to fend for themselves when a man becomes aggressive. Second, your definition/perception of “harmless” is likely to be much different from a woman’s, simply due to most men being able to defend themselves from unwanted attention/physical contact from a woman easier than women are able to defend themselves against a man. Similar to an 9yo boy grabbing me is not the same kind of potential threat as a 19yo man doing so. The power imbalance and physical size/strength gives me an advantage with the 9yo I don’t necessarily have with the 19yo.

Finally, to answer this: “Are these women extrapolating the small population of men they gravitate toward sexually (toxic, abusive types) to the entire male populace?” The answer is yes, for those women who have been abused. It would be hard not to without therapy.

However there’s lots of women who are definitely NOT attracted to that type that have just had enough personal experience with harassment, sexual assault, threats, etc from male coworkers, bosses, “friends,” fellow students, and random men that it impacts the way they see men in general.

As a woman, I feel extremely annoyed by it. There is a huge paranoia cult and they tend to shut everyone who doesn't fall for it. I understand taking precautions, but a lot of time this energy goes to the wrong places... ie. instead of focusing in surrounding yourself with more reliable people they just fear monger about walking on the streets.

A couple of weeks ago, there was a very bizarre post in a Brazilian subreddit from a girl who left a party earlier than her friends and she was too drunk and vomitting and the uber refused to take her. She was complaining how that men left her alone in the street drunk, being so vulnerable as a woman and blablabla. She didn't thought about having better friends who would be with her, or simply taking responsibility and don't get drunk... nah, it's more convenient to be scared of the boogeyman and blame a poor worker that was scared of having his car damaged (or even worse). Ok sorry for the rant but I really hate this kind of discourse.

I have a few explanations to this (sometimes exaggerated) fear of men.

1) Women are very much more likely to be raped in their lifetime than men. For example, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the US has been raped in their lifetime. It’s a huge difference.

2) Women are more likely to be victim of domestic abuse than men. For example, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.

Women are thought to « fear for their lives » or to be very careful with men just because they’re more likely to be victims of sexual and physical violence. However, I think there is an unhealthy and exaggerated fear towards men as like you said, it’s not a majority of men who are violent. It’s a part of female socialization, which makes some women feel insecure while there is in fact not that much danger (depending the situation).

In my country, the police gives stupid advices to women not to be assaulted by men (ex: always keep an eye on your drink or don’t go home alone by night), which pisses my off because they could just put the same energy to take seriously the victims when they come to fill a complaint (which is often not the case) and actually catching and punishing abusers (both men and women). Plus, the fact that even the police gives such advice reenforces the idea that women are in great danger.

Just try to understand that women are socialized to be afraid of men. I don’t think most women are labelling males as rapists/abusers/violent people (except a bunch of stupid « feminists » claiming all men are rapists). That kind of discours (« all men are rapists ») are just polarizing opinions and genders/sexes and it’s absolutely wrong and counter productive. I believe women also have to be aware of their cognitive biais that might reenforce this idea that men are dangerous. For example, there is the confirmation bias, the tendency to process information by looking for, or interpreting, information that is consistent with one’s existing beliefs.

I’m a naturally nervous person, and on top of that my mother was also the type to swing wildly from latchkey to helicopter parent. Every time I go out in public I try to stay close to walls and away from other people. Its a biology issue. Women don't even notice most men in their vicinity. They notice men whom they are attracted to, (even if that attraction is only the minimal attraction caused due to pre-selection bias) and men that make them feel threatened. Why you ask? Because it's the only thing left that's as big a deal. Men have to combat having a violent act committed against them as it's way more likely, just like women with rape/sexual assault as that's also way more likely. Then almost all the other stuff, men are the majority ones facing that, like being robbed, incarcerated, etc. I think there's only one or two things women majority wise have it harder on and they are all relatively minor as women gravitate to passive over the internet/phone / however far they can distance attack vs. physical fist fighting. Where is this large population you ask? They're your neighbors, teachers, church friends if that's your thing, etc. Not like they get accurate stats from this... Most rape occurs from people you know in your life, and so if the majority of women experience at least one sexual assault incident by age 15, which I believe is the current statistic, by the time they get to relationship life stage the majority of women have already been hurt enough to have PTSD. To further this, we are what we see, learned behavior, if for generations girls have been watching women parents etc. be high alert and nervous in response to strangers who happen to be male, this imprints into the societal learned behavior. Fear passed down generation to generation.

Last question, extrapolating men gravitated sexually to entire population you ask? Research shows it is possible to project past experiences onto future similar experiences. Especially if the individual hasn't gone through counseling to heal from whatever happened, which let's face it they probably didn't get due to high cost and our shit healthcare system. I cannot speak for others and what they do, I only have my own experiences to go from. Of which had nothing to do with sexually gravitating as there was no sexual knowledge of any sort from my 5 year old self. That's the crazy thing. Not only are most men harmless but most men also remain harmless to women even when insulted, provoked, harmed or attacked by women. Women will be more violent towards men, other men will be more violent towards men when serving their own interests, and other men will also be more violent towards men when serving the interests of women. I have witnessed so many occasions in my life where people avoided violence towards a woman, where they would have definitely solved it with violence if their conflict was towards a woman.

And people don't even see the obvious toll that this can have on men. Not just on the physical side of violence being committed towards men, but on the emotional and social side as well. A lot more men are vulnerable because of this idea that men don't have anything to fear. Men are also far more vulnerable to false accusations, or violence committed against men specifically due to misandric, insecure or careless women feeling threatened by their existence. Could you also imagine how draining and frustrating it would be for women, if they had to go through life with everyone just assuming that they're baby killers, unless proven otherwise, because statistically women are more likely to kill babies or infants than men?

It's strange how people can recognize that it's racist to say "black people are murderers/rapists", yet not recognize how it's sexist to make these types of assumptions about men. And these types of toxic gendered predispositions are clearly not rooted in size, because most women do not express that level of "fear" towards larger/stronger women, regardless of their disposition. It just stems from the fact that we live in a society that enables women in doing so, if not just fails to call them out when they are sexist towards men.

I think a better metric would be looking at what percentages of people are being attacked. It doesn't really matter much if most people are abiding by the rules if a few perpetrators are the ones doing all the crime to a wider crowd. I think that's the case in many instances when a person assaults or harasses someone, they go to jail for like a week, and then they're back out doing the same thing weeks later.
