I feel like good guys genuinely are who the are and don’t change unless a radical life altering event occurs. They do good things and usually expect little to no reward for it. Most of the time they’re actions are so routine they don’t know they’re doing it.

Nice guys actively call attention to their being nice in an effort to get praise and affection. And they’re quick to aggression when called out on it. I think some nice guys might think they’re good guys in the sense that everyone is the hero of their own story sort of way. They think their actions are noble and pure until pressed upon it.

Writing this I feel like I may be a nice guy instead of a good guy so now it’s starting to scare me.

"Nice guy," like "creepy" is code for "not attracted to him." That's it. That's all. Everything else is just ideologue nonsense.

It has become an excuse for people to completely trash and assassinate someone's character based off a snap judgment, itself based off a human being voicing frustration. It's pretty cruel and saddening.

However, the solution here is what a lot of guys do, myself included: never be 'just friends' with a woman. Waste of time, mostly.

Acquaintance, sure, but like...good close friend? Maybe if from childhood or some kind of exceptional bond.

I think there is the clueless nice guy type who doesn't really get how to make a move, get rejected and move on. This is common among teenagers because nobody knows wtf they are doing.

But then there's another type of guy who is running "not like other guys" game and realizes by being "nice" he can get in with women who have boyfriends and then try win them over. I feel the latter type is the one who explodes at women because they are really just manipulative to begin with.

It definitely makes me more suspicious when men go out of their way to be nice/helpful towards me.

That being said, I stay polite and try to make sure they know I’m in a committed relationship without responding to every compliment from a man with “I’m married” because there are men who just like to be helpful and I don’t want to make them feel like they’ve upset me.

I would say that the biggest hurdle of the nice guy(the actual one not the fake one) is that they are not as likely to make a move when they could/should.

A nice guy is going to be hesitant to put a move on a tipsy woman because he doesn't want to take advantage of her, even though she might "want to be taken advantage of." They won't dare hook up with an ex of a friend of theirs, even though it makes no difference and their friend would not have the same reservations. They aren't going to put a move on someone because they don't want to mess up what they have currently. They won't pressure someone into having sex.

Shitty dudes have none of those reservations and while they may strike out, ruin relationships, fuck people over, burn bridges, etc, they have already fucked the girl before doing so.

I think your overall ability to land women comes down to the same baseline traits. The difference between a guy being a nice guy and a player is the difference between prioritizing the good of others vs doing every trick in the book to get what they want.

Women don't care if a man is nice, mean, good, whatever. That's all window dressing. They care about which men are at the pinnacle, and which men are below them. They'll make all sorts of excuses and rationalizations that cast top men as "good", but they grow deeply uncomfortable and even incensed when low-status men get any kind of social credit.

Women are the vulnerable sex, so they're hyper focused on rank and status, and they generally stay within their lane when it comes to direct action in order to avoid physical conflict. Social credit or credence is like some one getting permission to act a little bit above their lane to get away with stuff and everyone puts up with it.

Low status men are allowed to be nice of course, but they're not allowed to get credit because credit means society owes them something. And, going straight to the hyperbolic worst case scenario, women often frame this in terms of low-status men gaining sexual access (which is loathsome to them). However, "nice guys" don't necessarily need sexual access. Sometimes the complaint is that women just aren't very respectful at all, even in their rejections.

This really bothers women, because although they wouldn't mind being respectful, it really bothers them that a man would be able to claim credit and be able to demand respect above their station. For women, this violates the indirect power game, and hints at direct power (violence). So it triggers all these fears and again it goes to the extreme, worst-case scenarios of nerdy guys who are stalking them and physically violating boundaries and so forth.

Even outside of the extremes, there's still the basic idea of how it makes women very uncomfortable that nerdy men would be willing to demand social credit of some kind - in this case basic respect and dignity.

So the "nice guys" concept is this clap back women have done in modern dating where they're trying to unify and direct massive social shame at low-status men who try to claim social credit. The fear is that these "nice guys" - worst of all - will convince high-status men of their argument. That women should be courteous and respectful, even if they are rejecting men, even if those men are abject losers.

This is an absolutely deep fear, since the high-value men hold all the power, which is why women are able to be so condescending to low-value men. If the high-value men start conceding to the needs or concerns of low-value men, there's a risk women might even someday be socially expected (again, indirect, passive game) to owe more SEXUALLY to low value men.

And this not-irrational, but out of proportion fear is why women go to the extreme case of hearing guys talking about wanting some respect and reciprocity for their niceness, and make it ALL about weirdo creep stalker guys who are absolutely violating boundaries.

I’ve been told I’m a nice guy (in the genuine sense, not the cringey stereotype). Personally, I’d say I’m more average, and perhaps my laidback personality steers judgement farther away from the other end of the spectrum.

I have noticed that [some] women who were initially attracted to me will lose interest or put a guard up, but those types of women tend to be superficial and not my type anyways. Additionally, I had a falling out once with a woman who shared some Tumblr meme with me about the realities of the stereotypical dude who claims to be a “nice guy”, when I was simply standing my ground on something and choosing to walk away. I laughed and told her I’ve never called myself a nice guy and don’t claim to be one. The look of disbelief and realization on her face was priceless and makes me laugh to this day. But yeah, she definitely formed her own opinion and judged me on the stereotype.

I think there should be some sense of pride of treating women well, but it’s kind of the bare minimum expectation in society—they are fellow humans after all. However, people will have disagreements and not always be compatible, so it’s equally important to not be a doormat or a male version of a pick-me. And ultimately, you shouldn’t say or brag about how much of a good guy you are. As cliché as it is, actions will always speak louder than words.

In your case, it was probably just flyby semantics. A victim is never at fault or responsible to what is done unto them, but they do have a personal responsibility to mitigate the chance of this happening through vetting, safety and security. That is the only actual 'affect' there is on women. A nice guy is always a man that lashes out negatively and harms women from entitlement, otherwise there is no distinction that makes a logical difference.

A good man that feels awful and frustration after rejection isn't necessarily an entitled man or narcissistic nice guy. He is more or less, human, a bit immature, but harmless and normal nonetheless, and shouldn't be grouped immediately with harmful Nice Guys.

For men some affects may be their inability to discern between a man being rejected on reasonable grounds (convert entitlement and malicious behavior) and a man being rejected on unreasonable but morally harmless ones (a woman's personal prejudice/preference). When you note these distinctions, genuinely good men don't care much. A woman with an inability to discern between these two types of men shouldn't necessarily concern good men, regardless, but is on the onus of the woman to learn.

I’m currently dating a shy guy who’s into anime and videogames and a lot of things that are associated with so called neckbeards. He is genuinely nice and smart and funny. He is authentic, he’s not a simp, he just genuinely is who he is and that what makes him amazing. Nice imo doesn’t equal unattractive.

The only ‘bad’ guys I ever dated were guys who pretended to be nice in the beginning.

The problem with the “nice guy” isn’t any particular behavior, it’s motivation. A real good guys ‘goodness’ is not conditional on other people behaving a certain way. Real goodness is springs from a desire to be good, not a desire for others to view you a certain way or treat you a certain way. Almost all the posts on r/niceguy have men who get defensive when encountering rejection, revealing an insecure core. An actual good guy who encounters rejection just says ‘have a good day’, legitimately hopes for the best for the other person, and moves on.

tldr: ‘goodness’ is self motivated because the person wants to be good, ‘niceness’ is used as a social tool to try to gain something

When I was a teenager I reacted extremely negatively to finding out that girls hated "nice guys" and hearing that they instead liked the awful manipulative confident bro shit pushed by PUAs. I thought it explained why there were so many shitty people out there, anti-intellectualism, so many other things I hated about the world.

I still kind of feel that way. I still think "confidence" is a terrible trait to select for when it comes to teenagers and twentysomethings - if you are "confident" at that age you are probably ignorant. Sometimes thinking about "girls like bad boys" makes me extremely angry - even for teenagers can't we align our morals and how we actually feel more consistently?

I definitely think there are guys (especially autistic ones) that misinterpret the information and think nice=creepy and sleazy douchebag=what women actually want to interact with. I know it impacted my ability to make female friends because I was never quite sure I was acting right around them.

Maybe things would be better if confused dudes who wanted to get laid acted nice instead of acting like PUAs? Like if a guy volunteers for charities out of some misguided attempt to get laid, well I'm glad he put in the hours.

The messaging could be better. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a nice/kind person. Just don't expect it to lead to sex or convince someone who isn't attracted to you to be attracted to you, and don't be creepy.

The issue isn't that some of these guys aren't actually "good guys". The issue is that they have a misconception that being "nice" entitles them to the interests of women, which can then lead them down paths of resentfulness and the "nice guy" stereotype where they become entitled dickwads.

They need to recognize early on that being nice is not an interesting or attractive trait. Granted you SHOULD be nice, but it's a baseline aspect of social skills, not something that warrants any special treatment.

If being "nice" is a defining characteristic of a man, that means he doesn't have the social leverage to ever get away with anything else. He's on the bottom of the totem pole, and being kind and agreeable is the only value he can offer. That is why women hate 'nice guys'.

A guy who is nice to others in return to those that deserve it, but isn't a doormat, knows when to stand up for himself and be dick when he needs to look out for his own interests. The difference is entitlement. A “nice guy” only acts nice/decent in order to get something they want, and if they don’t right away, they will flip and become aggressive and unpleasant very quickly. So at first you won’t always know, but the underlying aggression is often immediately evident. A genuinely good guy will consistently act like a decent person because that’s just who they are/how they were raised, there will be no Jekyll and Hyde transformation when they don’t get their way. They will also realize that being “nice” is a bare minimum that doesn’t make anyone special or entitle one to anything expect civil treatment in return. That’s not to say a genuinely good person can’t get angry sometimes, but not merely because they didn’t get something they never were entitled to.

It’s hard to be a good anything. When it comes to being a good musician, it takes years of practice. I can’t just be born and be a good musician. Everyone realizes that. However, when it comes to being a good person, everyone sort of thinks they are one on no grounds whatsoever. Good guys handle rejection like a grownup by accepting someone is not into them. No wheedling, aggression, or begging. No trying to essentially tell her "attraction is a choice" by saying "you are not trying hard enough to see me as attractive!"

Good guys also know that if you expect a relationship as a result of being a kind friend... then it is not actually being kind. It is a selfishly assuming that you are owed desireability if you show kindness to people you are attracted to.
