My father sang in a Barbershop chorus, played co-ed softball with my mom, and volunteered at church (happily and enthusiastically). He worked, and enjoyed cooking gourmet meals, yard work, and pitching in on the housework. His mother taught him floors were a man's job, and he took pride in his janitor style mop bucket. Oh, and he also raised 9 children, two with disabilities. I can't imagine my father having the time to play video games, nor even wanting to.

My husband exercises in his free time, or reads publications that help him to better understand the world and his career. He takes our son to swim practice and volunteers at his school. He doesn't "help me around the house". He does his share. Period. Ladies, don't settle. I had to divorce one man child who played games all day and contributed nothing to society. I'm so glad I didn't reproduce with him. Great men are out there. Incidentally, can you imagine if women held onto our childhood hobbies? What if I invited my girlfriends over to drink wine and play with my new Barbie dreamhouse?

Jfc this is the biggest cope in the entire world and I should know because I also was with a man who "provided" for me and was "safe" at home playing games from the moment he was off work until bedtime (While I cooked every meal we ate and cleaned our place solo with zero attention or affection). But whenever I was at work he was talking to girls on his secret Fetlife account that I eventually found. These video game addicted/porn sick men are lost causes who have blown out their dopamine receptors and they need to push the envelope and numb out from reality more and more to get their fix. Nothing real or tangible will ever satisfy them, they want what isn't real or what they can't have and often that desire fuels their entire existence. It’s a shame more men won’t actually go to therapy for the “wars they have within themselves”. Instead they sit in front of a screen for hours upon hours while their life just passes them by. To me that’s not a happy person. As someone who has a child, my NVX would sit there and mindlessly waste away at call of duty with the guys while our toddler child begged for his attention. It was quite sad. I like video games and all but I don’t use them as an escape from reality and I don’t let my video game playing interfere with my responsibilities as an adult. Be a damn father to your kids.

I have no problem with a man playing a healthy amount of video games to blow off some steam, or picking a game to play with each other for a few hours.

I take issue with how our society has normalized excessive video game playing.

Any hobby taken to the extreme that men take video games is unhealthy and addiction. Yet we view playing video games from when they come home from work to when they go to bed as fine. "It's just unwinding", "He's just a nerd", "Hardcore gamer" etc. This needs to be recognized as a bad habit and maladaptive coping strategy. If you are gaming for 4+ hours a night every night, what are you not dealing with?

She’s right, there is nothing wrong w a man playing video games. My HV brother enjoys an hour or two of FIFA a week. You know what he’s doing the other hours of the week? Working to provide, staying off the streets, cooking his family dinner while his tired wife naps, being coach of his kids soccer team, watching a movie with his wife, reading books to his children before bed every night, volunteering at his church, using healthy coping skills to deal with the stress of life, exercising to keep fit.

This “he’s doing the bare minimum so he deserves to have everything else he wants” shit has got to stop. Women need to demand better.

It makes me sad that this woman is just relieved he’s not out getting drunk all night or cheating on her and so writes an entire treatise that may as well just spell out all her many repressed needs that will never be met w this man.

Look, I enjoy video games. They’re fun. The problem with men playing video games is so often it’s an addiction, like porn. It comes before hygiene, before work, before building quality relationships, hell even before sex with a real person. It can distort the brain (like porn). Make people impatient, short tempered, acclimatized to toxic verbally abusive environments, etc. It’s TOO stimulating and too much if it rots the brain.

I’m not say video games MAKE people violent. Plenty of studies show it’s not that simple. But addiction to stimuli is real and impatience/rage quitting/inability to regulate emotions is totally a thing.

A lot of men simply can’t have a healthy relationship with video games. (I blame social conditioning and biology that makes them more competitive and willing to run into battle against all good sense.)

So sure. For a guy who enjoys to unwind with me by visiting my Animal Crossing island and fishing for a bit while I give him some of the fruit I picked or a guy who wants to work on our Dragon Quest Builders empire and it’s joyful and fun and RESPECTFUL and he’s still actively engaged in the real world, no problem.

That—like most high value men—is rare. Most are playing Cyberpunk and COD and screaming into the void while walking the dog to a digital escort.
