Probably for the same reasons why some women prefer not to have relationships with single fathers. It’s a lot to take on if you don’t have kids or don’t want kids.

That said, there are plenty of awesome single parents who do date and have relationships. Almost every single mother I know is in a relationship. Some with men who also have kids and some with men who don’t.

I'd guess most people, especially younger ones, don't want to date partners who already have their own kids. They don't want to participate in raising these kids or providing for them, some don't want to have any kids whatsoever. There's also an issue of paternity rights and whether the second parents is on the picture...all in all, it just has far more protentional issues than dating a partner who doesn't have kids.

And not to mention it scares off any dudes who don't actually want children at that point in their life. So shacking up with a single mom means at some point you are transitioning to a parental figure for her kids, however long that takes.

Being a stepparent = all the disadvantages of being a parent without the advantages. You don't have any recognition but you take part in child rearing.

That said, I think case of stepdad being forced to pay child support is rare.

It can also be complicated when you don't get along with the kid or when you have to deal with baby daddy drama.

Kids are a huge responsibility. They cost time and money. I know a lot of single moms say something like "I'm not looking for a stepdad," but if the eventual goal is to form a family unit, it's kind of implied that they become your responsibility. It's not like the bio dad will be coming over to help little Timmy with his fractions homework on a random Tuesday night. If your girl is busy, guess who is going to be helping little Timmy learn fractions on Tuesday night after working all day long.

Kids are obstacles in spending adult time with your girl. Whether you want to fuck or go out on a date, you have to make sure the kids are taken care of.

The bio father will probably be in the picture, unless he's dead or imprisoned. No guy likes having another guy involved in his household.

The dynamic between kids and "the replacement dad" is just inherently strange. You won't be the real dad ever, and at best you'll fill the role of being their "adult best friend" if you're nice to them and buy them stuff.

Men are typically not asked to do the day to day caring of kids which I think women who meet single dads might be.

On the other hand, men are traditionally seen as success objects where we are objectified for income and ability to provide. So just like women don’t want to be taken advantage of sexually, men don’t want to be taken advantage of financially.

There is also a group of men who like no commitment style lifestyle where kids and the lifestyle they force on you don’t combine.

Personally I like kids and I think I would grow attached of them. A breakup means I will loose contact with the them which would feel bad for me. It’s like a double breakup.

It’s all the responsibility of having kids with none of the corresponding authority. Being a stepdad is a thankless shitty job. Single mothers are very upfront often about you being the last priority in their life. Many use men as primarily monetary help. They have very little free time and many are jaded from previous baby daddy drama. No guy really wants to raise another man’s kid. Many single mothers also don’t want to have any more kids having experienced a broken home before.

Basically it’s a ton of liability with very little reward.

Some men will date single mothers, but marrying them…. I don’t see that very often. Marriage is just a shit deal for men, especially higher earning men. There is no reason to marry a woman that you don’t have kids with or have an agreement to have kids with ASAP. Even then I advise men to steer clear most of the time. Marriage vows don’t mean much to most people anymore and the financial implications of a divorce can last for a lifetime.

For a childless man who got his shit together to decides to date a woman with children, imo he’s actively settling.

Having children will complicate things in the initial dating period (honeymoon period).

Lack of availability or spontaneity.

Responsibility for child you have no rights to.

Making someone your priority knowing you’ll never be theirs.

You can be attracted to a woman or person with children but personally I would try to check my feelings at the door and have fun with her but I wouldn’t pursue anything serious or long term.

TLDR; it’s not worth a whole relationship.

Not over her ex, a single mother has access to her ex when it comes to pick up and drop offs of their child which means she has access to a man she may still have strong emotional connections with.
Being used for assets, I've heard countless stories of guys meeting single mothers who only used them to make life easier for them to get ahead then bounced once they had two feet firmly planted on the ground. A man can be a babysitter, finicial help, roof over their heads and a way for her to improve her life with no real LTR goals.

If I date a single mom, I'd have to deal with scheduling, emergencies, the fact that I will also be second to her child. If it is a committed relationship, I'd have to raise the child, provide for the child, and not be able to punish the child as I see fit. I potentially may get disrespected by the child because I'm not biological.

I'd have to deal with the baby daddy still have access to my girl. I may even have to deal with bullshit from the baby daddy...

If I have options, there would be no way in hell I'd choose the lesser option.

I wouldn’t date single dads due to the fact that I don’t want children. Having kids in the household severely limits a persons freedom. You can’t move for a new job at the drop of a hat as easily which stifles your career and lifestyle; household bills, health insurance/care and food are more expensive and you loose the majority of your free time to do the things your enjoy to caring for the kids. If that wasn’t bad enough you have a third wheel in your relationship in the form of the baby momma or baby daddy. That’s too much trouble for child free individuals to put up with. Single parents are best dating other single parents.

The same reason I wouldn't date a single father: they just don't want children right now, especially having to adjust to already partially grown children who may or may not accept them. Having a child is a big decision that people usually take after getting into a stable relationship and some don't want children at all. Some possibility of paying child support in the future really isn't on most people's radar when thinking about this; I certainly had never considered it, although I guess I may have had to pay it.

-Many of the children refuse to acknowledge the stepdad or boyfriend as a real father figure which can lead to many issues with not just the kids but the mother as well.

-Many men, particularly young, aren't mentally prepared to jump the gun and raise kids early on in the relationship. And the children not even being his own accelerates the issue.

-More often than not, the ex-boyfriend or "baby daddy" hasn't totally moved on from the relationship with the woman and many still want to be seen as the "real Dad" to their kids which can lead to hostility or envy towards the stepdad.

-While somewhat petty, you'll never know if the single mom merely settled for you over resources and getting the bills paid or out of true desire. Let's keep it 100....some of these single moms and "reformed thots" were the same women avoiding the "lames", nerds, dudes with no social clout, etc. before having kids. Now, that having kids and no married father around "humbled" them and leveled out the playing field, they're suddenly open for those same dudes to "man up" or give them a chance. Nothing wrong with that in theory but it can be very demasculinizing.

Overall, single men dating single moms can work, particularly if it involves those of the divorced variety in contrast to those who had kids out of wedlock. But it's still ultimately better for single men to go after women without kids because many men aren't prepared for the complexities and challenges that comes to being a stepdad and jumping into fatherhood so fast.

I've dated a single mom that I went to school with before. I dumped her because her ex/baby dad kept sending her dick pics on her cell phone and he was a 6 ft tall brute who wanted to start drama with me whenever I'd come to her house to eat dinner. Bro would literally find out when she was having dinner then drive to her house at the same time to start trouble with me. By no means am I saying that this is a typical experience but the chances of running into those problems are much higher in those type of relationships.

I want to know where in the hell are men being forced into child support for a child they don’t actually have? Seriously?! I can’t get child support out of the actual fathers and not once have I ever considered asking an EX for child support just bc they were around my kids for a couple years. I need answers!! For me, there’s a lot of factors that make dating hard. 1) I already have my kids and will not be having any more. 2) plans have to made ahead of time. Sitters have to be arranged. Single parents have to put up money for the date before it even happens. 3) we work hard to have a stable home and provide for our children so anyone who doesn’t have their act together is not going to cut it. 4) differences in parenting ethics. Even men who have children of their own rarely pick up books or magazines about how to properly care for and discipline children. Men tend to emulate their own father’s discipline with no regard to the level of toxic and abuse they put on a kid. When it’s not their child, they have even less acknowledgement of generational cycles. 5) the prejudice of how she became a single mother. The history she carry’s with her will always be something that he’ll have to answer for to his circle of friends and family.

I’m not interested in women with kids because of she has children it means we’re not interested in the same life path and lifestyle.

The women I’m attracted to are worldly, well traveled, they speak multiple languages, they’re highly accomplished in terms of academics and careers they like to use their time and money on travel and the finer things is life, and there’s nothing fine about screaming kids and shitty diapers. Several reasons..it’s harder to plan things especially if the child is young. Mom will have to take care of the kid or find a babysitter she can’t just pick up and go out as easily if she is single. There may be issues with the father and baby daddy drama I’ve seen it happen with randomly showing up at her house, blowing up her phone when she is out etc. This is a pretty important one..depending if she has a few kids she may not want any more and if you are not ok with with just being a step dad this is a deal breaker. It has to be emphasized that her kids are not yours..they have a real father in their life and when interacting with her kids the dreaded phrase can be heard “you are not my dad” which is hurtful..this is of course anticipating the relationship gets serious over time many guys for many reasons just decide it’s not worth it..there are just more factors at play you have to worry about. If you are an older guy though this is going to be hard to avoid this is mainly about younger guys trying to date

I can't speak for people who won't date single mothers, but I briefly dated a single father and it was a nightmare. His ex-wife would use their child to block us from being together - for example, we had planned a weekend getaway, and as soon as she found out that he was seeing me she coincidentally got COVID and told him that she couldn't take their child for the week. Kid is three years old and at that point it was too late in the day to find a babysitter for the weekend. These kind of interruptions happened a lot. It was strange because she had initiated the divorce after coming out of the closet, but she still wanted to control him and would occasionally text him nudes and "I miss you" texts. He said that having a baby with her was the worst decision of his life. Over time it became apparent that he had psychological problems too - and I didn't want to stick around long enough to see his own toxicity play out in our relationship. It takes two to tango, after all.

I wouldn't date a single parent again unless I was a single parent and the ex was completely out of the picture. I would only make an exception if the person's ex was on VERY good terms with the person that I was dating. I love kids - the idea of being a stepmother doesn't phase me. It's the type of involvement the person's ex has that makes or breaks the relationship.

The logical answer: parenthood takes a lot of time. I have one baby who isn’t even fussy - overall pretty good baby, and i barely have time for my husband. We haven’t had sex in 8 months. We can maybe squeeze out enough time for a 2 hr date like once every 2 weeks. We are always slesp deprived and tired. I cannot fathom as a mom - starting a new high quality relationship (which also takes time and commitment)

A step father wouldn’t be on the hook to pay child support unless the bio dad has his rights terminated, the step dad marries the mother, and he fully adopts the child. Even then, child support enforcement is a joke and it’s easy to not pay child support if that’s really the biggest concern.

Some don’t want children of their own around and especially not someone else’s children. Some want to share the experience of being married and having their first born with their partner. Desirability will mostly depend on how she looks, her personality and to a lesser degree - her financial situation.

For example, in the UK a single mum can work 30hrs a week and still have a two bed flat/house. So she wouldn't be a massive drain on the man's finances.

If she was in a less developed country and would be a drain on a guys money, she would generally struggle much more.

I don’t want kids of my own so I sure as hell don’t want raise another persons kid. That being said now that I’m in my 30’s I’ve been a little more lenient. I’ll only date women who’s kids are old enough to take care of themselves and not need a baby sitter.

I don’t like little kids part of why I don’t want any of my own but I can deal with a kid who can mostly take care of themselves. It just makes dating easier when you don’t have to cancel cause the baby sitter got sick and you’re less likely to get the bio dad.

You're going to be #2, especially at the beginning of a relationship. A single mom is going to put her kids first, as she should. I have heard it posited that in a healthy family, you should put God (if you believe in a higher power), yourself, your partner then your kids. The rationale behind having your kids last is they need stability from their parents.
Generally harder to make plans.
Going to be more likely to be attached to a previous partner in some way.
The whole disciplining of a kid that's not yours.
