Need consent from the father to obtain his DNA. There are a subset of men who trust their baby's mother more than the government. Conspiracy theories will pop up about what the DNA sample will be used for in other ways.

I can see this paying for itself if there is a corresponding database of all male dna. When any baby is born, it could be matched with that database and financial responsibility for the child assigned to and collected from the biological father.

If that support could be enforced, the resulting reduction in state support might offset the cost.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that most of the men who are so concerned about potentially supporting a child that isn’t theirs aren’t going to be quite as enthusiastic about a system that also ensures that they do support children that are theirs…

I don't know about mandatory, but I understand there's a limit on how late you can do it before the courts will go "too late lol" and make you responsible anyway. That limit should be abolished, it shouldn't matter if the kid is 17.

Not mandatory. But it needs to be normalized. A man should be able to have the same peace of mind that the child is his as the mother has.

And laws definitely need to be changed so that a man who has been misled for years about paternity isn't stuck paying support for a child he later finds out he didn't father. I can't think of too many things that are more unjust than the state forcing a man to pay support for a kid he didn't either biologically father or willingly adopt. And mothers who commit paternity fraud need to face criminal penalties and pay restitution to men they misled about paternity.

If you want a test, nothing is stopping you. Don't try to make others do it. They're aware a possibility exists and may well be doing it without any lies involved, anyway it's their decision to make.

I'm concerned about the government's overreach, and what they would do with wide access to that kind of data. But people are happily sending away for home DNA kits now and giving up their personal information willingly. As a wife however I would have probably divorced my husband if he asked me for one while I was pregnant because it is a clear indication that he believes I cheated, which would make me assume he himself was cheating and projecting. I'd give him the test though. Establish paternity and get the child support, and try to be good co-parents.

I do believe it should be mandatory but realistically it won't because the government is only concerned with the well-being of the baby above all else and not getting stuck with the bill, even if it means screwing over the paternal figure.

That's why in some places if you put your name on the birth certificate and later find out that the kid isn't yours, you can still be liable to pay child support.

So honestly men have no other choice but to have their future kids tested in secrecy.

No. If you have suspicions then take the effort to get paternity established in court and have your name added to the birth certificate after. The system is already in place, it just requires effort and it sounds like no one wants to do it.

The government is slow (and sometimes wrong) with pretty much everything. Child support enforcement isn’t that great, you can evade it for a long time. It’d just be one more agency to fuck up.

There’s not path forward for this logistically.

There are already a lot of routine tests at birth but they are all based on clinical, medical evidence demonstrating a public health impact. That is why doctors and hospitals offer them - they don’t GAF about some dude being cucked, they care about the medically impacted people (mom and baby) coming out of the hospital healthy so they can meet quality health measures and reduce cost from an insurance perspective (by early detection of complication)

Perhaps a special interest group could lobby hospitals to offer a test routinely, but it wouldn’t be covered by insurance and costs go up when tests are done in patient, so doubtful that many would elect to pay $300-500 per test.

Last option would be to get the government to pay, And politically, this simply doesn’t have legs. Most politicians would not take this up since basically all women and probably a majority of men would think it’s silly and unnecessary. Not too mention as others have sad people don’t like the idea of routinely sharing their DNA for themselves or their children.

If more than 50% of men in a nation were victims of parental fraud, like 51%-70%, a conversation could be had. 80% or more then legislation should be seriously considered.

A risk I see is there will be some amount of false readouts. Namely in some cases test will say husband isn’t the father when it actually is. This can be sorted by just doin another test if mother is insistent she didn’t cheat though. But may in limited cases cause some drama.

On the other hand, that sounds really expensive and invasive, and there would definitely be at least one false negative that leads to a spousal murder. I think its a good idea but practically speaking- its way too much money and effort to enforce and too many potential legal repercussions. (I have felt this way about forcing people to take the COVID vaccines too).

It would be nice if it was legally mandated because then neither party would have to worry about offending the other.

At the same time, there are people who simply don't want their DNA on file, and I understand not mandating it to protect those people's rights.

I personally see both sides of the story in terms of how sensitive a topic it can be. I think given the current state of it not being mandated, if a man wants a paternity test on any children, that should definitely be something that they discuss with a partner before getting pregnant, and definitely before marriage as well. I totally understand if the couple was dating not seriously and accidentally got pregnant that the male partner would want a paternity test for their own security. But I've also seen cases where women who have been totally loyal to their husband, have just gone through the most vulnerable than you can, literally giving your body up to give someone a child, and suddenly had it sprung on them in a nasty way, while they're hormones are going crazy anyway and their body is basically running a marathon in place. That is just not the time. There is no way that is going to go well. And it's not unknown for a man who freaks out in that situation to actually have been the one who was cheating. I do think that there's a gentle way to introduce it in the beginning of a relationship so that it wouldn't be a deal breaker. But unless you actually caught your spouse cheating or being really suspicious? It's just so hard. Mandating it would take care of all of those fraught issues.
