A friend of mine is the only girl in her programming course at uni and says that most of the guys just live up to the stereotype and don't even talk to her. Not because of bullying, they're just too scared.

My only concern with the class is that they don't call it what it is - a remedial class for people who tend to have zero prior experience with programming.

Computer science is difficult for women to get into because the introductory CS courses typically serve as weed-out classes. A majority of people with zero experience in programming end up dropping out, but fortunately for men, a lot of them have been hobbyists and even paid professionals prior to graduating high school. Unfortunately for women, the vast majority enroll in CS with zero experience.

The only way to get 50/50 for everything would be to literally force people into fields they have no interest in. I don't see how anyone can justify thinking we need to push people toward one thing or another. Just let people do what they want.

Well, it's interesting, I'm taking AP Computer Science, and we started with about a 1:1 ratio in gender. By the end of the first quarter, only one of the girls is left. Just a weird coincidence.

Having a B.S. in computer science, I can understand why they want a women-only class. I saw some pretty egregious sexism in my program. My wife also majored in C.S., and during her senior presentation, I overheard several of her classmates whisper to each other "pretty good... for a girl."

She was also under fire a lot more when presenting anything in her classes, and in more than one instance, was interrogated because they thought I wrote all of her code.

My issue isn't that there is no male-only option available or that they're excluding men from the class. My issue is that I'd be concerned the grading standards would differ. Especially when there's a controversial class like this, the most effective way to keep it is to tell the administration "but look! The women in this class are outperforming the women in the co-ed class! We need to keep it, regardless of criticism!", and that might lead to a much more lax grading system / assignments.

Women already rank higher than men in terms of academic success (and I won't get into arguments as to why that is ridiculous here); the last thing we need is for that to be inflated even further.

I honestly cannot imagine anything any more dehumanzing and prejudiced than "women dislike nerdy men, so they need a "Safe-space" to protect them from all the lonelies who might try to talk to them". This is practically like a "whites-only" class for sports education(not really accurate but couldn't think of any better example), because white people feel uncomfortable in classes where there is a black majority.

It isn't about M v. W, there have been studies that show that people of both genders do better in certain subjects when they are separated. Women in STEM fields have been shown to perform better and be more interested when in single gender situations.

So, if it's been shown that a significant proportion of people do better in single sex education environments it is justified in instituting classes like this. It isn't "sexist" is it statistics, it is science and evidence based outcomes. If it helps women (or anyone) to have gender specific classes, then I think it's right to implement that.

saw in this /r/all/. this makes a lot of sense imo, computer science is absolutely dominated by men and i can see that being a pretty huge barrier to entry for women who think they might be interested in the field. if you honestly think this is sexist/wrong, go survey your local universities CS department and see what the gender split is. talk to both genders about their experiences in the field.

I'm actually going to offer some reason for this. In Chess, there are female only tournaments. The reason for this isn't because women are greater than or worse than men, its because its a male dominated competition. Women can compete in male tournaments, but some women are intimidated out of doing so. To ease the transition into chess tournaments for women, they created one where there is no pressure against them not to join, and most people would call that a good thing.

This is the same case. CS is heavily dominated by men, and some girls feel like they don't want to be the single girl in a male only class, so they just don't take it. This class allows them to feel less pressured into pursuing what they want to pursue.

This is all assuming the classes are essentially the same thing, I.E. not easier or more difficult.
