I think it is kinda inevitable. Before, kids were considered assets especially when people were farmers. Nowadays, kids are considered liabilities. Unless we can somehow turn that around, people who pair up might still only choose to make one child instead of four, cause children ARE expensive. It isn't just the matter of whether people are pairing up or not. We probably need to look at more statistics on whether it is more impacted by the difference in number of kids per paired up household vs. not as many people pairing up.

I’d rather the population collapse than people reproducing with the wrong partners and further exacerbating generational trauma. Everything has a demise, I’m not sure humans will last forever anyway. Our ancestors did what they did without stressing about what the future is going to look like. You can’t ensure any outcome. I think life is following its natural course and either we will find a way to adjust or shit will hit the fan. I brought one kid into this and I hope to equip him the best I can to live a good life, but I sure as hell wouldn’t do it again. I wouldn’t blame him if he also didn’t want to have kids. I just love him and I want him to live as long and as happy as he can. I don’t really think too far beyond that. I only feel a duty to him and to not be a burden to society financially.

Also, I do believe artificial wombs will be a thing in the future so that may be a possible solution.

Childcare is very expensive, yet so is being a stay at home mom… and either way the kids require a huge amount of work and attention to thrive Most of women who don’t have “enough” children forgo having either more or any children because they cannot afford to give those kids a better life than they had, the dream of every parent.

And like, ok, let’s say you build some artificial womb farms to generate millions of new babies. Who’s gonna raise them all? Let’s be frank here— it’s overwhelmingly not going to be men volunteering to raise helpless babies. The workforce required to care for these babies is enormous, because babies need so much care. So how are you going to convince hundreds of thousands of women to raise these babies? You going to pay them with nothing more than the relatively minimal respect that modern men show mothers and childcare workers now? Would you do this work for free or minimum wage for as little respect from your fellow men as these roles typically get?

I think a lot of the issues are why have children in the first place.

Pregnancy is hard and birth isn't fun so there's no joy there.

Raising children itself is difficult and often the Mother is hardly judged regardless of what she does. So there's no incentive there.

It's flipping expensive and has got to the point where affording a child could end up a status thing as childcare, clothes, food, or even the extra electric needed costs people out. Then children become a considered choice.

Given, i’m not a woman, but since the post said non exclusively and it’s just a discussion post, i’ll answer.

It isn’t as crazy a worrying trend as we’re making it out to be, as we’re arguably overpopulated anyway and the population growth we’ve had post WW2 isnt exactly normal. At the time, a combination of being in an economic golden age, combined with the fact that child mortality rate became entirely non existent (though people’s mentalities were still based on pre-war ideas), the population boomed rapidly. On top of this, periods of population booms and dips are the historic norm, whether it be due to economic conditions, social conditions or external factors like war and disease. It happens, populations fluctuate. We may see a dip in the next 2-3 generations but following that things will boom again as the world balances itself once more, so to speak.

The only difference between this dip and previous dips is that since the previous dip, communication has been revolutionized 3 times over, transportation became exponentially faster, medical tech developed exponentially and our economy didn’t depend on active online engagement

Yes. I am content seeing birth rates collapse. Because then maybe men and governments will step up and help with childrearing in a way that allows women to be free and equal members of society. One of the main reasons rates are collapsing in china and South Korea is because they allow women to be free, but men also expect those free women to still be primary care givers of children and parents AND take care of the house.

In western societies were there is slightly more balance in terms of men being involved compared to the countries above, having children is absolutely soooo fucking expensive. Even as a professional, childcare was sooo crazy expensive I could not afford to have a third kid during my 30's. Perhaps if there was awesome day care, excellent universal health care, and reproductive freedom (at least up until 20 weeks), there would likely be more WANTED births.

In absence of these two changes I don't see the birth rate going up unless men make us slaves and forced birthers again.

I really want kids. I just want to preface with that.

There's no incentive to get pregnant in America and every incentive not to.

You can no longer survive on a single income, so regardless of what you want to do you have to go back to work typically within a few months of your child being born, if you're lucky. This is bad for the psyche of the child and the mother as recovery from pregnancy can take months and many labors are traumatic.

There's no guarantee you won't lose your job once you get pregnant, maternity leave is rarely more than three weeks at any company. It costs up to 5k to give birth in a hospital with insurance (14k without so if you've lost your job and by extension your health coverage you're fucked) with stagnant wages and higher cost of living many literally can't afford to give birth without bankrupting themselves.

Daycare costs about 15k a year no matter how you slice it, but the grandparents are now keeping jobs into their mid-60s so you can't exactly call a parent to watch them. The public school system is eroding so you're likely going to have to send your kids to a charter or private school but if you end up having a disabled kid those accommodations won't be present.

Having a child can stagnate your opportunity for advancement at work because people tend to associate women with children as mothers first but don't apply that same label to men with children. But again, you cannot survive in this economy on a single-income household.

Climate scientists are predicting a complete societal collapse within our lifetime (I literally want kids and am praying for a solution) so there's literally an ethical question of whether or not bringing a child into the world is moral that more and more people are taking seriously.

The rollback on reproductive rights makes getting pregnant harrowing. Carrying a nonviable fetus to term is often life-threatening and the new laws requiring for the fetal heartbeat to be nonexistent before the doctor can perform an oftentimes lifesaving abortion is leading to more and more horror stories coming out of places like Louisiana and Texas (you could not pay me enough to get pregnant in a red state rn). So someone who would maybe have fertility issues but still a shot at conceiving is now likely to not try at all bc of fear of going into septic shock because the doctor couldn't extract an incredibly sick baby that's going to live all of one hour before dying as well.

That's all before you get into the general "some people just don't want kids" which is also relevant and fine. Most fathers don't help with a lot of the childrearing, mothers are relentlessly judged for not doing enough. Parenting ends up being a largely solo commitment for many, and women have watched their own parent's marriages and don't want to risk being trapped in a similar situation. Women settling for less than adequate men results in less than adequate fathers raising a kid alone is draining.

This idea that women owe the country children when the country we live in doesn't protect mothers or by extension women is ludicrous, they can cry about it all they want but I don't see things getting better until having children is feasibly affordable again.

All of that is to say, if we hold out long enough maybe they'll actually fix half of this shit but I wouldn't hold my breath.

As if y’all would be having babies like that if you had to gestate carry and birth them, let alone take care of them physically and financially until adulthood.

Propose some sort of solution that doesn’t dictate women being incubators for years on end idk maybe then we can have a discussion. I don’t think people having some kind of crazy high standards and not being able to find anyone to meet them is why people aren’t having kids. There just isn’t as much of a reason to have kids nowadays unless it’s something you just really love doing. It is a good thing to have wanted kids rather than unwanted ones.

I am perfectly content watching birth rates go down - there are too many humans for the planet anyway, and I believe unwanted children are more likely to be treated badly than wanted ones. I see no reason we shouldn’t be able to live with a sustainable population instead of an ever increasing one which obviously has a limit.

I have never seen any evidence that conservatism is something that is “bred”. Society tends to get more progressive with time, not less.

Population collapse is not necessarily an Armageddon event. It will likely result in a redesign of the economies if most major countries, but the idea that indefinite constant growth is/was desirable or sustainable is just silly.

The population will redistribute and mass migrations will become normal.

As far as tradcons reproducing faster than progressives, I agree that looks like the obvious trend, but there is a pronatalist movement within progressivism that is a cool rebrand of classic progressive eugenics, so they're not a complete loss. I am interested to see what kind of incentives governments will use to encourage more babies. Ultimately there are still plenty of people who want to have kids, but the economic reality of paying for more kids(and even things like where to put a third car seat) already suppress the number of kids people decide to have.

There are too many people for the limited supply of exploitable natural resources at the moment. Leaving the only exploitable resource, the last abundant one left: other people. That's why life has a sort of petty and shallow undertone; people are the fodder for the economic system as it more closely resembles a Ponzi Scheme. Check back when we actually get down to, say, 3 or 4 billion, when the fisheries, aquifers, forests, etc, have a fighting chance to replenish themselves.

It’s not a big deal. Many people have kids without thinking. I think more people are aware of what it actually takes to have a child and choosing not to put themselves or another life through hardships neither are ready for.

Finding happiness for an adult is also possible without kids. More money. More time. Just need to figure out what to do with both.

I'm a dude but I think this is a necessary evil because of greedy corporations trying to maintain exponential growth in profits at the cost of quality of life. We as a collective need to reevaluate our ways and attend to what we already have for the time being to recollect ourselves, make sure we are centering ourselves in the right direction. I guess that means declining birth rates, good imo, whatever it takes to shake these corpos up, force them to be present and ground themselves with reality instead of selling it for some non-existent future.

I am a pronatalist who is doing my part to repopulate the earth. But I will tell you it is really fucking hard being a parent! I love it but life was so much easier before I had kids.

I support both policy solutions and shifting of cultural norms that are pro-family. For example:

federally mandated parental leave (maternal and paternal)
tax credits for children, and subsidies to either be used for childcare or to support families with a stay at home parent
reeling in the ridiculous standards around car seats
housing policy that supports multigenerational housing

shifting cultural norms need to be:

being realistic about women's fertility window
encouraging people to stay in the communities they were born in to maximize the likelihood they will be close to family
making third-spaces more child-friendly (e.g. restaurants with play spaces, kid friendly bathrooms)
being realistic about the difficulty of having 2 full time working parents in families with small children
without shaming the single and childfree, incentivizing pro-social decision making like marriage and childbearing within marriage

People are overpopulated. This planet already cannot take care of all of us in our western standards. And it's a great thing that it will be hopefully solved by birthrate decline than by world war for resources.

So now it's great, just leave things as they are. The old to young peole ratio might suck but I believe it will be solved by automation and work force will move to caring and nursing professions over time.

When population finally declines to sustainable level that this planet can actually provide for long term, it's about money. Most people still desire to have (more) children but can't afford it. Plus I'm sure that also awareness about the destruction of enviroment plays a role. So make sure we don't actually destroy this planet and that people can actually afford to have children and still live comfortably so it wouldn't lower their lifestyle and they will have children.

This decline absolutely needs to happen in order to survive because otherwise this planet can't provide for everyone. After that it's just economic question to adjust the system to keep birthrates that sustain some ideal number of population.

Also artificail wombs would be nice.

There are some pepole like me who just don't want children and there is no way to motivate them. But mostly it's simply about money, cost of living... And maybe worries about enviroment and future...

I think it if ever got to a real collapse level that more people would choose to remedy it. But we're talking global scale here, not just individual nations who are or might be affected--even for several generations.

Ultimately, part of one's view on this depends on if you see humans as just neutral, one species among many, or if it is somehow morally and ethically necessary for them to continue. A collapse would be more disturbing to people in the latter group.

I was treated awfully by teachers and other kids and still live in the catchment area and probs won't move
There's way too many creepy men and women around, and around everywhere, there's no escaping them
The world's collapsing in on itself, AI taking jobs, mega companies own everything, the natural world is disappearing and being damaged, there's a climate crisis, a financial crisis, and a human contact crisis.

For these reasons I wish I was never born, I'm not dooming another life to live in this world.

I do not give a flying fuck about the population. I come from a country that had the highest population emigration for a country that's not at war. And it was primarily young people who left. It is already collapsing and it had nothing to do with people not settling for a relationship.

Socio-economic factors play a significant role in migration and number of births. Cases of not having children because of gender war are insignificant as there are married couples who are child free (by choice).

I think this is a pyramid scheme, we need to be able to sustain longer lives and reduce the population rather than just make more people.It's horrible for the environment and not compatible to the modern lifestyle and aspirations.

Automation and AI
Investing in older people - people will live longer and be healthier longer, accommodating that and focusing on improving the quality of life even further will keep people involved in society longer rather than see them as burdens
Immigration - not popular and not to be done blindly but yeah, it helps maintain the economy

i mean I'm sorry but even in the best society you can't expect people to just make tons of kids, it's totally obvious that this strategy isn't compatible with any advenced soccieties. Most people don't want more than 2 kids even in the best financial circumstance. Modern upbringing isn't easy. Unless you want unfit people to have kids and don't care about how those kids are raised and put to work, you can't simultaneously expect modern upbringing and childcare demands and traditional/3rd world reproduction models.

My honest opinion is that it's a very good thing and I wholeheartedly believe humanity will find a solution (rejuvenating medicine, robots etc). Humans adapt to their social and physical environment.

The future will be brighter if everyone is born with intention and has enough resources because we didn't strip the planet raw.

On the opposite end, I find it much much worse if the population would grow unhindered and everyone had children without thinking about their kids' future or well-being or not giving a shit about the planet's resources. This path leads to extinction quicker in my opinion.

The main reason people don't want to settle down these days is because there's not a lot of reason to settle down. You can live your whole life being happy and healthy and single.

Likewise, the main reason people don't have very many children these days is because there's not a lot of reasons to have children at all. There are 0 incentives. Children just eat your money for 18 years then fuck off and live their own lives without so much as a thank you.

I think this should not be a worry when the global population has grown to unsustainable levels and is still growing. We need to restructure the way we do things to support some shrinking. People are still having babies and too many of them, and any decreases in births in certain areas isn't due to people not liking each other so much as people not wanting to have children even when partnered, and certainly not usually wanting a dozen children like people might have had before. That's usually not fair on the parents or children from an emotional or financial perspective.

Seeing the responses to this post, it’s going to be very hard to feel sorry for childless women over 50 in the future when they willingly chose it and refused to listen any pro family, pro children opinions at all.

To be honest I will still feel sorry for all the lonely childless old people our future will have. Far more men will be childless than women however more women would have chosen it willfully whereas I think most childless men would be the old psuedo incels who were simply not selected by the right women.

Women think way less about these long-term future projections than men do. It's hardwired. Just look at the majority of responses here, which are basically, "I'm just focused on my immediate surroundings and day-to-day life."

Women will care when they see the results of the depopulation* in their daily lives, but not before. The good rule of thumb is that women care about the survival of the species more than the individual. Meaning, if she thinks, as many women do today, "were killing the planet because there are too many humans," her biological urge to have children will be incredibly muted. When the population begins to dwindle, however, births should, in theory, pick back up again naturally.

The world is more populated now than it’s ever has been, maybe it needs to collapse a little, even though it will probably cause all sorts of issues for the people actually living through it, it might end up being for the best in a couple hundred years.

It will probably lead to a big demographic change due to the difference between birth rates in different countries. I suspect the richer countries with lower birth rates will end up bringing in more migrant workers.

If it really came to that, it won't just be a gender war. It will also be a war between citizens and immigrants as companies face labor shortages and allow open borders. National security will constantly be at risk and terrorist attacks will increase. Weapons will be smuggled in and with an aging and single population that cannot support themselves, soon there will be resource wars and meth will be the new currency.

We are only really looking at population collapse in the developed world - elsewhere they are still breeding like rats; we’ve seen a steady rise in economic migration into Europe in recent decades with the associated social upheaval that entails as the new arrivals seek to impose their way of life, and eventually, they’ll become the majority, and subs like this won’t exist.
