I wish I weren't circumcised, but I don't feel bad about my junk. I don't blame my parents, either. Circumcising was basically a default position where and when I was born, and my parents did not have the benefit of an informed decision. They made the wrong decision, but it's not something I hold against them on a personal level.

We were asked no less than six separate times if we were sure we didn't want our son circumcised. The pressure to agree to it was ridiculous, and my wife eventually snapped at the Nurse/Doctor about it. I wasn't with my wife at the time, but she told me later and I was amused. She was more harsh than I would have been.

Less and less people are being circumcised. I wouldn't worry about girls being "weirded out" by it. For the majority of the world, women are more likely to think the cut unit is weird.

Circumcision is a cosmetic type of surgery when there's no medical reason that is emergency to be done.

If there's no problem do NOT do it.

It's literally genital mutilation and it'll hurt a lot. Plus there's risk of your kid literally dying because of the surgery.

The foreskin protects the gland of the penis and has important role. It's not "extra skin that can be removed".

It's his body, so do not mutilate your son. Aside from the emotional and physical damage you'll do to him, he'll likely resent you for circumcising him (if he's not brainwashed by people who think genital mutilation is is not bad for boys). Also, you'd be abuser if you circumcise your son.

When he becomes 18 years old he can choose to have one if he wants. also, do not influence him by making think that there's nothing wrong with circumcision.

I am circumcised and hate that it was done. I sometimes resent my parents for allowing it to happen but remember that back then it was done to the vast majority. Now it is the minority (changed when govt insurance stopped covering it).

The biggest thing I can tell you is that it can always be done later when they are adults. (The fact that you know an adult wouldn't want to do it should tell you something)

Most men aren’t in my birth country unless if jewish or maybe for health reasons.

Even better, put the $500 or whatever profit the medical industry makes from these procedures into a savings account; should have doubled in 18 years. This is some incredibly destructive and petty, if not even far more cruel, reasoning to even entertain. Cutting a piece of your son's dick because it's "popular right now" isn't a justification, and it's circular reasoning. If everyone else that is uninformed or just a trend follower is doing it because "it's popular right now", then you are maintaining a harmful practice just for the sake of continuing a harmful practice. Your son may or may not grow insecure because of his penis, and this could be true whether he is mutilated or not, but this could also still happen for countless other reason and insecurity alone does not justify medical alterations.

If he does become insecure about his penis, or any other aspect of his body, then it would only be a problem because you have failed to instruct him on how to deal with insecurities. It's also entirely possible that this might not even be the norm in the future and that fewer people will end up following this harmful trend(this would also mean that by having him mutilated, he might end up being in the minority because of it and you are effectively creating the problem that you are trying to avoid by mutilating him). It's also entirely possible, and very likely, that public opinion on circumcision will change over time.

The odds of him being sensitive about his foreskin, just because it's "not what others have", is also extremely small and, realistically, very temporary. Most intact men are happy to be intact, or would get over the idea of being "different" very quickly, so it makes absolutely no sense to take that choice away from him just because he "might" be insecure about it years down the line. Also, if he was to develop an insecurity about his own body later in life, and it was enough of an issue with him that he would want to do something drastic about it instead of learning to embrace it, then at least he would still have that option, as opposed to you taking that option away from him entirely.

Your reasoning makes about as much sense as saying "he has a bigger penis that most boys, which means he will surely be insecure about it when he's older because he's going to be bigger than all the other boys, so we should perform a penis reduction surgery on him to prevent him from being temporarily insecure about it when he's a bit older".

It’s not a necessary procedure, no. The American Pediatric Association even said the benefits are not so great as to warrant widespread circumcision of infants. Loss of the foreskin has also been indicated to greatly reduce sensitivity and pleasure in sex. Some men find the sensation too intense and wish they were circumsized at birth. If he doesn’t have any apparent symptoms warranting one, it’s not really worth it. It’s more a moneymaker for hospitals and gives your child little benefit. I wouldn’t do it, wish I wasn’t. If it was meant to be removed we wouldn’t be born with it either.

The foreskin has biological functions.

The procedure is not without risks. Every year multiple boys either get permanent injuries or in some cases die from circumcision related complications.

There are no benefits from doing it, it doesn't make it cleaner or less likely to get STD's, it just means that the penis' ability to lubricate itself and protect itself from chaffing is removing.

If you wouldn't circumcise your daughter, don't circumcise your son.

I didn't know any better when my son was born 20 yrs ago. He was a happy little man for the first 24 hours. They came and got him and when they came back he was screaming and nearly purple. He screamed until he passed out. Most doctors are told that the nerve endings aren't fully developed yet and there isn't much of any pain. Utter bullshit. I carry a bit of guilt to this day that I let it happen.

Circumcision is a brutal, primitive thing to do to a newborn. It removes most of the nerve endings. It's really easy for a doctor to fuck up - a baby penis is incredibly small. Do some research on botched circumcisions. Babies have died from them.

Iam very thankful to my mom that I am uncircumcised. I used to think being un cut was weird with how the media portrays it, until I found out about the loss of sensitivity (60-70%). However, I think it is more important to think about it being genital mutilation because that’s what it s. When your son is older, he can choose to keep it as is or he can have it cut, but that will be his choice. The common argument is “it’s cleaner.” It isn’t. Pull the foreskin back, use some summers eve wipes / body wash and you’re good.

As a woman (so not the demographic you are asking and feel free to skip my answer), I think that circumcision is completely unnecessary. I live in the UK and it is quite rare to come across a circumcised penis. I have seen only 1 circumcised penis in person in my life. None of my uncircumcised partners had an issue with hygiene, they bathed/showered as should be encouraged. I am not going to get into the sexual part because we are talking about a baby. It is genital mutilation of an infant. I really disagree with male and female genital mutilation. It's wrong on so many levels, if your son grows up and decides to get circumcised then that is his decision. Your role as a parent is to raise a healthy and happy human, circumcision is not going to make them happier or healthier. Idc about family traditions, I have been christened along with the rest of my family and their children. When I have children, I'm not going to get them christened.

In the very, very unlikely event that circumcision is necessary.... okay then go for it. But it is not something to just do just for the hell of it. Foreskin reduces the likelihood of kidney, bladder and urethral infections. Don't take away a body's natural defense for vanity. Also, baby will experience pain. Okay, they won't remember it later in life, but why would you make your baby suffer for no reason?

So, I’m a man, born in the US (circumcised) and now I live in a foreign country, so I’ve not only got the experience of hearing the perspective of those of my own country, but also those of another.

I have a son. We decided not to circumcise.

The reason being is…why do it?

There’s lots of arguments for mutilation, etc., and I’m not really here to argue that. There’s also arguments out there about cleaning and shit, which don’t actually hold up, especially if you do your job as a parent and teach.

The real thing is, why? What’s the point? There’s no proven benefit to it; it’s just something that has continued because of…culture, I guess? I’m not going to judge others for making the decision to circumcise, but I also don’t really understand the arguments for it.

The foreskin is there for a reason, and the only reasons for removing it are hygiene based which can be resolved by teaching him to pull the foreskin back and clean thoroughly during showers. There are 0 valid reasons to remove it and the side effects of removing it are worse than “I’m stupid and can’t clean my foreskin”.

I am a woman who fought for her son to be uncircumcised. My husband is and was like “yeah that’s just what you do, right?” I went down the rabbit hole of research and showed him how unnecessary is it and the times it is needed is rare.

At the very least if it’s a route you choose to go, have it done by a pediatric urologist versus the doctor in the hospital.

There’s never been any issues about my husband being circumcised vs my boys not being. We just explained what they need to do to clean things up. They’ve never been like “oh we look different then dad” which would be a weird thing to be aware of as teenager now I guess.

I assume there's some pre-natal documentation needs signing? So look in that for anything regarding circumcision, if there is check the right boxes, if not put it where they ask you to sign, that you do not give permission. Personally I'd put it at the bottom of every page they want you to "initial here" etc, but that's my preference.

I was lucky at birth.

My mother was also open minded. My dad was too I guess. I was born into a strict Mormon household.

My mom just said no when they asked her. She never can articulate why, but she said it didn't feel right at the time (1980s baby here)

It has not been a negative for me when it comes to 99% of the problems people always bring up. I am constantly grateful she didn't do it.

I have only had excited curiosity, never any negative reaction, plus it just seems pointless to me. Also I have had friends who have confided in me that they wish they had the chance to choose for themselves.

10 years before he was born I read something about it and had been considering it the whole time.

We finally spoke to our daughter’s pediatrician and she said there was no medical necessity and that she (the pediatrician) would do it if she’d had a son but that it would be only for looks. This is the only crazy thing I’ve ever heard her say.

Anyways, I see it as a form of genital mutilation and wish I hadn’t been circumcised so I didn’t feel the need to see my son “like me.” If you also read about what the removed skin provides I just didn’t see any negatives to leaving it alone.

I was partially circumcised as a child for health reasons (may or may not have been actually necessary, I'm skeptical). Basically my tip is exposed but most of the glans is still covered.

This was the most painful experience I've had in a long time, maybe ever. The all I can do is scream and tremble kind of pain. I don't really remember now 30+ years later, but I've remembered for long enough. And obviously the pain doesn't just go away when the procedure is finished and all the bleeding has finally stopped. I would wish that pain on my worst enemies, not a baby, certainly not my own child.

I also remember feeling intensely betrayed by those who were supposed to protect me. Nobody told me anything about what was going to happen to me or why we were even here in the first place.

At least I still have enough foreskin left to be functional. Hygiene is a complete non-issue if you actually wash, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either a liar with an agenda, or just can't know any better and is trying to feel better about their own circumcision.

I'm European, not circumcised, and (absent medical reasons) 100% against circumcision. There's no advantage but quite a few risks involved. Hygiene is no issue at all, that's just part of the daily shower, just like you wash your armpits.

Circumcision seems very much a cultural thing, it's rare in Europe (less than 20% in most countries) and large parts of Asia. See Wiki, prevalence.

Of course there are clear monetary incentives at play, especially in the US where it's the 2nd-most often performed procedure. There's a reason its health spending is by far the highest worldwide, even when expressed as share of GDP.

WRT intercourse, it may affect the woman as well. The skin around the penis shaft provides an additional layer between the stiffened shaft insides and the vagina. With foreskin intact the skin acts like a sheath that reduces friction against the vagina. What that means in practice, if anything at all - you already know. You should be able to try that with your husband, form a ring around the shaft with your fingers and gently pull towards the tip as the lose skin allows.

ETA, and just so you have an idea of the alternative: The foreskin automatically pulls back and frees the glans when the penis becomes erect, it becomes a ring of skin behind the corona. I can pull that ring back from behind the glans pretty much the entire shaft length. So when I'm inside and thrust, there's usually nothing creating friction against the vagina.

You'll also notice there aren't too many people who are uncircumcised saying that you should circumcise your son. I'm not, and I have never experienced any shame from a woman I'm dating or any health or hygiene issues. So my vote is no. I did see someone suggest that you watch a circumcision before deciding, I would suggest you don't do that. It's horrific and I can't get the image of that poor kid out of my head. I agree with most comments: you don't have the right to make that horrible decision for him, and I don't understand why genital mutilation is not a crime yet. As a general rule, if you are doubting whether to do something irreversible, wait. Just wait. There's always time to do it if he chooses to. This advice is meant for suicidal people but it's valid in many situations.

The saddest thing you will ever witness is when the doctor returns the child and opens the diaper. The sudden shudder of terror and shrieks of the child proves the child has been traumatized and remembers where and in what manner he was harmed. At that moment your heart should drop. You should be fully aware you abdicated your duty to protect your child from these people and for what? If he wants/needs to modify his body, let him choose to do so as a consenting adult.

He can always circumcise later in life if he decides he wants to.

Don't circumcise but remember to learn and later teach him how to clean under his foreskin. When washing, foreskin needs to be pulled all the way back otherwise dirt will keep accumulating and it will cause a nasty infection.

Also, if foreskin is not pulled all the way back it could tighten up to a point where it can't be pulled back at all and at that point pulling it back will cause pain. And obviously at that point it can't be washed properly.

I don't know how western women feel about washing their infant son's private parts, especially because the US has a long history of circumcising boys, but that's an ordeal that you have to keep dealing with until he can wash himself.

I live in a country where Noone is circumcised and Noone is saying they wish they were when they were kid. But I've heard some circumcised people on net regret not having foreskin and mad about losing it. So it seems much safer not to do something to your kid he might regret and won't be able to undo.

It's genital mutilation. Don't do it. I'm uncircumcised. Never had any issues. I was taught how to clean it well when showering from an early age, peeling back the foreskin, making sure there's no smegma and what not. It also hasn't impacted my sexual performance in any way. I'd go as far as to say having a foreskin helps with lasting longer in bed. Get your son familiar with his body parts from a young age.
