28 & getting divorced - never been happier

My husband and I were married for a little over a year when I asked for space/separation. I thought the distance and space would help me make up my mind of why I was feeling the way I was feeling - which was that I didn't think we were meant to go the distance. I was right; the space DID help me make up my mind. On the first night, I felt relieved to be anywhere but in the same house with him. By the third night, I realized I had barely thought about him. After a week, I realized I didn't want to go back and add that weight back onto my chest. After a month, I had never felt more at peace.

I don't even remember our wedding day. I don't remember feeling joy or hope for the future. I remember that it was a fun party with our loved ones, but I feel numb when I try to think about what should've been the best day ever. I knew something wasn't right, and I didn't know how to say it.

There was no abuse, no cheating (at least I don't think there was. He accused me, so maybe he was projecting). Nothing was "wrong" except for *everything*. I found myself not considering him in any decisions. I was selfish. I recognized it and tried to change, or at least tried to figure out the root of my selfishness. I just kept coming back to "I don't want to change." I *wanted* to choose myself. I knew I no longer loved him enough to choose him over me, and he didn't deserve that. Once I started to think about life without him, I couldn't stop. The thought of it was intoxicating. Scary, yes, but so freeing. Starting over is scary, and I'm not usually a risk taker. But it was possibly the only scary decision I've ever had to make that I jumped at head-first.

Being divorced isn't a defining trait. Is it shaping this part of my life? Maybe. But it's just a chapter in the story, not the title of book. Part of me didn't want to leave because I didn't want to be that girl who simply changed her mind. The girl who didn't listen to her gut instincts before getting the government involved. In the end, I made peace with the fact that I am too young to spend the best years of my life trying to figure something out that didn't have a solution. You can't make yourself love someone. I tried. And it only made it worse. I tried to find my love for him again and all I found was resentment and depression. And once the resentment creeps in...it's very, *very* difficult to escape.

The life came back to my eyes the minute I walked out that door. I've never been happier, and I've never had a stronger "this is exactly where I'm supposed to be" feeling than I have been frolicking in for the last several months.

Ladies - simply not wanting to get a divorce is NOT a good enough reason to stay married. Life is so short!!! Live it!!!! Peace, love, and blessings to you all xxx
