I’m currently attempting to buy a house. I know this market isn’t great, but financially I’m in a place to do so now and stop renting.

My list of requirements isn’t overly long, I’m realistic about what I’ll get in my price range, and I’m paying cash. Unfortunately, there seems to be this stigma about single women with no children having nice things.

A few weeks ago, I put in a cash offer 10% above listing price on a house. My offer wasn’t accepted according to my realtor because another couple sent the homeowner a letter about how much they loved the home and how their children would love growing up there. The homeowner literally left money on the table to accept that offer. (I don’t know how these letters that people are sending are legal.) When I pressed the realtor for more details, she suggested driving someone else’s car and dressing down when I go to look at a house, so I could look more relatable. Mind you, this was not a starter home or a fixer upper.

My realtor called me a few days ago with an address to a “hidden gem”. When I pulled up to the driveway, I couldn’t believe that she wanted to show it to me. It was 1/3 of my budget and less than 1000 square feet. When I asked her why she was showing me this house, she said, “well it’s just you and this is the perfect size for one person”. So because I’m single, I should be relegated to a house with no garage and a kitchen the size of a shoe box?

Apparently in this housing market, the nice homes with a few bedrooms, room to park a car, and a yard are reserved for those who have married and procreated and the spinsters can just become little old ladies who live in their shoes.

I’ll be looking for a new realtor, but in the meantime, please share your stories of buying your dream houses on your own.
