This is very antidotal but I have an aunt that would be considered WGTOW. She’s now in her 60’s and has been single most of her life by choice. In her 20’s she was a solid 9, even now she is fit has top tier looks for her age. She resembles Heather Locklear. She graduated from a prestigious private college on the west coast. She has helped take several start ups public and is well off. She dated a lot when she was younger but quit in her 40’s, not at all due to a lack of interest. She says that she is just stuck in her ways and doesn’t really want to have at adjust to another person at this point in her life. She’s an amazing aunt, more like a mom to myself and my sisters and our kids. She has two dogs she puts a ton of effort into. If she wanted a man she would land one in no time. She started out in investment banking so her social network is very well off. Many of her male friends are $50m+ type of guys. Retired CFO’s of companies that are household names. There are many men at or above her level that have tried to date her. Her situation is entirely by choice.

I think both sexes are at a point where relationships seldom feel worth it. They are not with the investment of time and emotional energy. I can relate.

I'm 26 and don't date. Can't be bothered. My last relationship ended when I was 22 and since then I've had sex 3 times. I've noticed I'm not aging as badly as women who get hitched and become mothers and I have a lot of disposable income. I personally love being single. I don't worry about anyone except myself and I can spend a lot of time with older family members.

I know several women who are going their own way. They are single and have zero interest in dating or marriage. I especially see this among women in their 60’s who have been divorced. When you talk to them, many say that they don’t ever want to be married again and that while they may want a boyfriend for dates or sex or just to do fun activities with for company, they have no interest in marriage or being with someone forever. Many just want to be alone period.

The difference is that women don’t announce these things. They don’t make a movement of rage on social media and loudly declare how much they dislike men or are happier alone. They just exist and live their lives.

I was WGTOW for a while. I just didn’t have any interest in dating. I wasn’t actively seeking out men to date online or IRL because it is very stressful and discouraging. And online spaces which are supposed to be for encouragement and support, like dating advice forums are filled with rage and hate against women.

For example, a guy was posting a comment here once that a lady who was 34 and never married and using a dating service was a “spectacular failure” “living her worst nightmare” despite him being a single dad. When that is the energy men present online, that looking for a husband is embarrassing, a sign of failure, and shameful, then why would I want to date or interact with them?

I know a number of bisexual women who no longer date men. Pretty much all of them have had boyfriends in the past, and some of them will hook up with a guy once in a blue moon but they're never interested in more than that and pretty much always ghost right after. They prefer women for both dates and hookups, although it's not necessarily a sexual preference, more just that they don't like dealing with men.

Big overlap between that group and women I know who have done a years of celibacy with no dates or anything. Sometimes they come back, sometimes they don't.

I spend a lot of time at a (mostly) female only gym and I know a handful of women who have been like this for years but I am recently in the last year seeing a LOT of younger women just opting out of dating all together.

Not WGTOW, but as a straight woman, I don't blame them. I think it's a response to the pandemic shining a light on the fact that we're not as advanced as we think we are when it comes to labor division and gender. I'm single, but most of my friends are married with kids.

From my observations, even when both parents were home, and even among my more "progressive" friends, Mom was the default parent 90% of the time. Dad was praised for doing the bare minimum, which he'd refer to as "babysitting," despite it being his own damn kids.

I'd love to find "my person." I really would, but I also don't want to be stuck parenting a grown ass man who can't even boil an egg or wipe his own ass. I have no desire to work the 2nd shift at home after working at my 9 to 5 job all day. I think many WGTOW feel the same.

I know a couple of women doing this, but they don't identify as any group. If you talk to them, they'll just tell you they're not interested in dating as leave it at that. Otherwise they don't make much noise.

I think it will be difficult to find statistics on this because I don't think most women declare they're done with men altogether, so much as they just stop focusing on it and sort of give themselves up to fate. I know this is how I was. I never would have said I was overtly done with men, but if you were close to me, I would have admitted it didn't feel like things were working out, I was pretty sure I was the problem in some senses and that there wasn't a man out there to match me, and I wasn't going to waste anymore time I could be happy fretting about it.

I don't know if there is any data, but WGTOW already have a term; spinsters or old maids.

The concept has been around forever:

There does not seem to be a movement of women 'giving up on dating'. Just that some realize they are happier single or want to focus on other parts of their lives.

For example, in the US and Canada, most women over 45 are happily declining offers to move in or marry from long term beaus.

Childfree single women are the happiest demographic.

So while I'm sure some women have given up dating out of frustration, most women who 'go their own way' just have other interests that don't include romance (for a brief time or for a long time, or until they die).

Most people are still dating. Most women (and men) are still getting married. Long term relationships are still common for anyone who lives a few decades.

There is just less of a social stigma about being open about it if you choose to remain single or to opt out of dating.

In some cases (for instance women in their 40s, 50s or older) many have already experienced relationships or marriages and now want to spend the rest of their lives making their own way without romance.

They often still have friends, mentors, people they mentor, family in the picture. They just pursue adventures that aren't romantic or sometimes aren't sexual in nature.

There are absolutely defined movements in some countries eg South Korea, but mostly it’s simply that droves of young women are turned off dating because it doesn’t serve them. They no longer need a man to provide resources, and unfortunately, a lot of young men have nothing more than that to offer. In some cases, they don’t even have that.

Most, but not all, of the young women I know who aren’t dating actually do desire love, sex, marriage, relationship, children etc, but know that they can have all that in their 30s if they want it, so they’re spending their 20s on themselves - education, travel, career, friends, hobbies. While they’d like to be in an intimate relationship, they haven’t turned sex into a sport or some singular issue to obsess about to the exclusion of everything else like men have, and the men on offer for dating are either a long way off launching (still at home, casual job, haven’t been to college) or older, predatory guys looking for someone young and easily manipulated. They aren’t interested in slackers or creeps, so are choosing to stay single and work on themselves in the hope that at least some men their own age will catch up in a few years. Of course, most men eventually do, and they find love in their late 20s or early 30s. I’ve watched my nieces and most of their friends do this, and they’re just coming out the other side of it now, with all of them having met nice young men who have spent their 20s doing the same thing, working on themselves, and I’m watching young women I work with do the same.

26-28 seems to be the age most of them are starting to date seriously, with a view to marriage in their early 30s. I think it’s great. Saves them so much heartbreak and abuse.

There is a circle in the middle consisting of women. Then there is a concentric circle around that circle consisting of men.

When women WGTOW, they go inward to other women. When men go MGTOW, they go outward into the unknown.

every time I look at these articles they cite the number of unmarried women, which is an extremely poor proxy for female MGTOWs.

It's not, actually. The majority of mgtow still have sex and usually have a short-term fwb or 2. Some even have long-term women in their lives who they simply tell upfront "we are never getting married, never living together, never having kids, never sharing a bank account. If you agree to these requirements, we're cool for as long as you want."

It's more rare to find a mgtow who is in monk mode 24/7.

I imagine female mgtow would be very similar. They have men around for sex and maybe to be a companion on a vacation or something, they just don't want them to get hitched or ever think they'll be together permanently. While most unmarried women don't call themselves wgtow...in essence that's what more and more are becoming.

MGTOW as a movement is fundamentally dumb - its very much like someone yelling “I’M IGNORING YOU!” when they aren’t getting attention. That being said, WGTOW as a movement doesn’t need to exist, and it probably won’t - cause a movement like MGTOW is born out of spite and men’s inability to properly support each other - women don’t have the same issue, so even with a bunch of single women, there is no grounds for a WGTOW type movement

Having said that - Sometimes (rare) a woman will have a phase where she doesn't have sex for an extended period of time - but it's a phase, and it'll pass.

My experience is that girls are more likely to 'sprint' in dating/romantic stuff. They'll be inactive most of the year, decide to open up an app profile for a month or so and then either find somebody or accumulate sufficient trauma that they pop off for another year.

Compared to the relatively eternal optimism of men.

However, I'm a mgtow myself and I understand how it works: it's mstow (men sent their own way), same for the Wgtow. The truth is, no one wants to be lonely. Men truly go their way when they've been burnt in bad relationships, marriage and courts

The majority of mgtow just use it as a cope or cool label, that's all. Most of them would gladly date again if they could date an average woman, and many simply are virgins with cero relationship experiencie.

Honestly dude I have bpd and I find that in relationships I lose my sense of self and become very… malleable? It’s caused me to just be okay with being treated terribly because of how infatuated I can be. It’s my own problem and my own mental illness but the way I can be the most stable is by being alone and keeping even most platonic relationships very surface level. Dating just isn’t a good idea for the way I’m wired so I just abstain. I’m still young so maybe I will improve and be able to responsibly date again but that’s for the future.
