Why is it most feminists (and probably other people as well) think that men can walk around without fear at night? Is it simply because we aren't delusional about the apparent dangers out there? Men are more likely to be mugged/beaten/murdered/harassed/you name it at night. The only thing we suffer less of is stranger rape in a dark alley, which is also not even common for women. I know men who also think they are safe at night simply because everyone tells them they are. I pointed out the statistics to a friend and he didn't even believe me at first. This myth is not only willfully wrong, but dangerous as well, since some men seem to think they are perfectly safe alone at night when they are not.

Withou denying that some people unjustly have it harder than others in our society, I have to object to this whole concept of "privilege." I think that's the wrong way to think about it. This about rights and being treated fairly—neither of which are privileges; they're things everyone should be able to expect in our society. In other words, straight, White, cisgendered, able-bodied (etc) males are not privileged, they're just not discriminated against as much as other groups. That's not something of which they ought to feel (or be made to feel) guilty or ashamed. The problem is that many other groups are discriminated against in some way or another. This whole privilege argument doesn't help, it's just a backlash from groups that feel their plights are being ignored by those who don't share in them. I also don't deny that some White males do ignore/deny the suffering of others, but not White males as a group (that's a generalization). So unless you're going to add not having to be told you're privileged to that list of privileges, I don't really see this as much more than a shaming poster, no matter what the person who posted it thinks.

This shit right here infuriates me to no end. I work at a bar, and I usually ride my bike or walk to work every night, which means I'm walking home at 4 am with my cash from the night in my pocket. How fucking dare someone assume that just because I am a male, that nobody would target me, or that I don't feel safe. I don't live in the best part of the city, and people have been robbed at gunpoint in this area on many occasions. Yes, I am a male and I can defend myself, but that still doesn't mean I'm not constantly looking over my shoulder and checking my surroundings to make sure I'm not going to be attacked.

This whole privilege idea seems like a method to put the responsibility on other people for one's feelings. If there are posters like this then minorities don't have to be honest about their feelings because you should know: 'we did make a poster'. On a personal level you don't need this idea of privilege. You only need communication and consideration. And on a personal level if you are not getting communication and consideration then you find people that can give it to you. I would request of the makers of this poster that they tell me how they are feeling and what I can do for them. No, really for them. To help them get what they need right now. Me 'checking my privileges as an opportunity for myself' doesn't help them get what they need at the moment.

Men are much more likely to be victims of violent assault.
Women outnumber men in colleges.
Being able to hold your partner's hand while walking down the street as a heterosexual is not privilege. Not being able to do it as a homosexual is an unacceptable restriction.
People think non-whites get into college because of affirmative action because affirmative action exists, not because of white privilege. Get rid of affirmative action, which privileges people, and people will stop thinking that.
Being able-bodied is not a privilege, it is the norm.
If you don't have to think about it, it's likely because it doesn't concern you.
"Cisgender" is not a thing.
If you don't want privilege to be seen as a burden or source of guilt, then stop throwing it around like it's an accusation, and stop treating the norm like it's privileges.
Closest one to true privilege I could find was the one about days off based on christian holidays. However, these days off have become more of a cultural thing than a religious one (in my country anyway) and if you move to a majority christian nation and don't expect things like these, you're expecting privileges.

I think I've come to understand why the term "privilege" grates so much in this context. A privilege is something doled out by an authority. The circumstances of one's race, gender, abilities or sexual proclivities are fortunate or unfortunate, and an empathetic and civilized response is to respond to needs for accomodation to whatever degree practicable. But to assume that one's fortunes are the result of some privilege granted by some cultural überparental entity is fairly infantile.

For me, the need to redefine words to forward your agenda demonstrates a thorough lack of intellectual rigor: an intentional and implied bowing out from any sort of academic debate, which is what should guide public policy.

Here you see it with the fundamental misuse of the word privilege; elsewhere there's the refrain that white men cannot be victimized by either sexism or racism.

I'd pitch a fit with the RA who put that up. Like, I date guys so if I had a boyfriend, I'd be able to walk down a street and not have anybody think anything of it. That does not mean I'm heterosexual. I pass for straight, but I'm not. That one flyer denies the existence of bisexuality, pansexuality, and asexuality. Disgusting.

I wasn't expected to go to college because of "class privilege", but because I was smart and my mother would do anything to give me what she couldn't have because she had my brother at 20 (she couldn't convince him to go). I have no college fund. I pay for everything with loans, scholarships, and the holiday and birthday gifts from my grandfathers.
