Historically, yes, women have gained access to material resources through marriage as they were not able to inherit or earn much in terms of assets.

However, in current day, do men not covet "rich girls"? Isn't that why Gen Z women are obsessed with the Country Club look? Also, why would anyone opt out of receiving resources as a consequence of who you partner? Access to resources (read: wealth) is inherently attractive and it is adaptive to pursue it though hard work and through social relationships.

Also, the only rich men who most unwealthy woman have a chance with are new money (think entrepreneurs, athletes, salesmen, dealers), and that's because some of those men are unstrategic. Similarly, upper middle-class women and new money rich girls will date a middle-class man if he is competent, driven, and educated.

In a world where most wealth is inherited, Wealth dates wealth. Beyond that, anyone can benefit from hypergamy as long as they are not lazy and incompetent.

I personally do not pursue hypergamy, but I think it's appropriate to say that lazy prospects should be avoided. Not only is this about preservation of resources, but it's also about carrying your weight. Lazy people are a liability and should settle for other lazy people. That goes for lazy rich people, too.

Is there some study that says that women and women only are hypergamous? Please discuss.

For context on me, I am in the same income as my partner but he earns a bit more as he is a few years older. At the moment, I have the higher earning potential based on industry, but he has the competence to make as much as he wants. Neither of us come from money.
