Let’s stop pretending that sex robots are going to change anything. RealDoll’s been around since 1997, and robotic versions showed up around 2010. These things are expensive, awkward to own, and come with upkeep people love to ignore. This isn’t some market-sweeping revolution, it’s a niche product that’s already been here for almost 20 years and nothing’s changed.

As a futurist/tranahumanist with a great interest in tech I'm greatly looking forward to such developmements in the fields of AI, VR and robotics.

I see sex dolls as a positive for society rather than a negative. If such synthetic robots can provide companionship to the elderly, disabled and those datingly challenged then I fully support such tech.

Realistically however we're very far off from such tech, maybe another 20-30 years (if we all survive that long!). What we have now is immobile sex dolls with some/limited movement.

Everyone is going to think differently once these things are super realistic.

If you'd have told me 10 years ago that thousands of everyday women would be selling adult images and videos of themselves online, I'd have thought you were crazy. Yet here we are with OF. All that is to say, what seems far fetched now, can quickly become normalized.

Imminent should stipulate a year or range of years make it an interesting debate.

My personal thinking is that it's obvious something akin to a "gen 1" sexbot will be available in the 2030s. That means somewhere between the next 4~14 years. In the big scheme of things this is "immanent."

Just to put things in perspective, the existing humanoid companies plan to manufacture as follows:

Tesla: 50k/yr by 2026, 1 million/yr by 2027. Given, it's Elon time but these are the low end of estimates and he usually gets there.
Figure AI: 12k/yr by 2028.
Agility Robotics: 10k/yr.
Boston Dynamics: 30k/yr by 2028.

These aren't "sex robots," but it's only a short leap from a generalized humanoid to a crude sexrobot. West World isn't the benchmark. We're talking something that can talk, walk, dress and undress, hold positions, etc. Basically an existing silicon sex doll skin on top of a humanoid mechanical skeleton.

I agree it won't be long. My guess is that they will come out with realistic female chatbot companions, and a few years later it will be possible to have that chatbot personality inserted into a realistic sexbot.

Kind of like meeting someone online and chatting online for a year or two and then eventually meeting in person.

I think that at first, robot waifus will be seen as low status; men who turn to them will be mocked and ridiculed. But eventually, you will start to see high status men -- accomplished actors; millionaires etc. turning to waifus. They will realize that there is a lot of value in having a companion who you know won't falsely accuse you of domestic violence or sexual assault; who won't sue you for child support; who won't tell the world about the size of your member; etc.

Neah. Fembots and naive pillers have been yapping about sexbots being "imminent" since 2010. It's safe to bet they're not imminent and wont be for another 15 years.

Realistic-enough sex bots won't be a thing anytime soon. And when it eventually happens (assuming VCs are still willing to risk until they make it happen), there is no guarantee men would like them enough to pay the steep monetary price for one.

In reality, it is (and will continue to be for the foreseeable future) cheaper to just hire a bangmaid rather than try to buy and maintain a sexbot.

You can get a top call girl for 250 CHF for an hour in Switzerland. Which is the MOST expensive country in the world. So sex 4x a week will set you back 12k a year. Meanwhile a unit from Realbotix is $95k starting price. Plus more on extras, plus maintenance. And it will be inferiour to a top call girl.

A top call girl in my city is $100 to $150/hr. So with the money I'd pay for a still shit-tier "realistic" sexbot I can pay for 950 hours of real sex with a real human.

Technooptimists always overestimate the impact of technology and rarely get it right in terms of market feasibility. Remember how VR porn was supposed to dominate by 2020? Or how automated trucks were to become the norm in a decade (prediction made in 2015)? Or how everyone will have Google glasses and it will be the end of privacy? I’ve thought about this quite a bit. I’m bisexual and the idea of a female sex robot is certainly something that piques my interest somewhat. But then it occurs to me that mostly what I enjoy about being with a woman is making her feel pleasure. Even if a robot could simulate that pretty well, I’m not sure if I would actually enjoy it. Because at the end of the day it would basically just be like a high tech sexy video game, but I’m not actually causing anyone or anything to feel real pleasure.

For the men who are mainly just wanting to get off and have a warm body next to them, and don’t get anything out of giving someone else pleasure, maybe that would be adequate.
