I was applying to a German University and I saw that they blatantly said they would incentivize and prefer female applicants according to their State's Equal Opportunities Policy... I think people are making decisions based on ideas that women are always unfavored and discriminated against to the point where they start discriminating against men to push back. But if women already have a majority in universities, why keep with such policy?

It's already affected the dating market. I've been saying it for years. It's extremely hard for women with a college degree Millenial or younger to find a partner. People with and without college degrees typically don't mix. This means there's a big oversupply of women among people with college degrees. This makes it so it's extremely easy for men with some college education to find a wife, but very hard for women to do. I've seen it around me for the past 10 years, almost all the women are dating down.

Men are realizing college isn’t worth the headache or the debt. Maybe these women are single, not because they make more money (a lot of these women choose majors that don’t make much money) but because men don’t want to settle down with someone with an insane amount of debt. Our culture looks down on trade work even though you don’t have to go into debt to get a trade education and you can make more money than a lot of majors in college.

Also, in our culture, a lot of women are kinda bitchy and a lot of men are weak and socially awkward.

A large percentage of that population probably wants a college educated man, but will be open to a blue collar man.

Probably nothing.

Women hold the majority of debt and many pick degrees which are useless. The gap between the subjects each gender picks is likely to widen again (gender equality paradox) because things like houswifery is getting more popular again.

However I would like to see a change in the underlying issue. Women get better grades for the same amount of work and school isnt fitting towards male nature since we are less agreeable/submissive.

We’ve already seen the effect more education and higher income has had for the working class. Fewer marriages and more kids born OOW and raised outside of marriage. Time will tell if the same thing will happen to the higher income classes, who as of now still normalize marriage and children born in wedlock.

Fwiw I have a couple of friends who married men with less education. They seem to be doing fine. I imagine that like everything else it works for some people and not for others.

The article is behind a paywall so I can't read it. A lot of these women are in colleges studying teaching and nursing and are probably open to dating guys in trades or the military. Most of the elite colleges are about an equal 50/50 split, and the best public colleges under those are usually the same unless they don't have engineering programs. It is the lesser colleges that specialize in teaching or nursing that are the most heavily skewed (and where young men are probably doing the best when it comes to meeting women to have sex with if they're also there studying).

Men who aren't willing to do STEM are going to have to be willing to start entering fields that are traditionally "women's work" as manufacturing jobs that require only a high school education are likely to continue to decrease due to automation and outsourcing. My theory is that those in power aren't really addressing this because these men are a pipeline to getting more military recruits, which are going to be needed in the future to counter various future threats.

Edit: The article points out that the skew is even larger at private 4-year colleges - meaning liberal arts colleges. Of course they will be because these colleges don't teach anything practical. These colleges are dinosaurs that stay afloat by offering a bunch of liberal arts degrees that mostly appeal to women, with the women who graduate then either complaining that their useless degree is not helping them find a good job, or being forced to study at graduate school and to spend more money to actually learn something useful. The typical man who can actually succeed in higher education tends to be shying away from this style of education in favor of desiring to learn something more practical.

I think many posters are correct that this doesn't seem to be any special inflection point. It's just more of the trend that has been continuing for a while. That said, those pointing this out as if it answers the question are ignoring the OP's final paragraph and real question: where does this trend lead?

It's not just about education. Women are increasingly outperforming men by various metrics. To better examine the issue, it's important to at least temporarily set aside the very elite and the very bottom. There are strongly supported theories that support the idea that men are more variable than women on a biological basis, and thus the extreme right and left tails of the distribution are special cases that need to be examined with a different lens.

Sticking to the middle of the distribution, it's unclear to what extent this has to do with women being better suited, biologically, to the modern world; and to what extent it has to do with poorly calibrated cultural influences. It's also unclear to what extent the gap has to do with women outperforming vs. men dropping out and underperforming.

In terms of the impact on the world, if one gender is underperforming its potential, everyone loses. However, to address the dating market specifically, it depends on ones conception of female sexual selectivity and hypergamy. Both are real, but I'm not sure we have articulated a perfect definition of them. It's also unclear whether we understand how female sexual selectivity and hypergamy adapt to profound cultural and technological; changes.

I think the evidence puts a lie to the assertion of many feminists that whatever hypergamous and especially selective elements to female sexuality did exist, they were socially constructed and would disappear given the right cultural calibration. Female hypergamy and sexual selectivity has shown itself to be very intractable in the face of cultural and technological change. It has, however, shown itself to be adaptable. As education levels equalized and then became in favor of women, women have become more hypergamous with respect to income. Hypergamy and selectivity seem to be able to change the criteria it uses to measure men, and to be able to adapt to greater levels of overall equality by measuring with smaller gradients.

With no changes in the accepted narrative to help guide things, it is hard to know exactly where this goes. But the trend seems to be that as females become more economically equal of superior, the value of male provisioning and security in the female attraction calculus will diminish. Furthermore, a sex obsessed culture will increase the value of raw male physical attractiveness. Women will still be willing to trade raw desire for material gain, but the price will naturally rise. There will be more hook ups based on raw desire, where male physical attractiveness combined with dominant personality traits will be prioritized over everything. (And the ability of personality to compensate for appearance will lessen, but never disappear entirely.)

However, when it comes to real relationships, even on a purely erotic basis, male status and ability and dominance is still very important, however it is measured. It is very hard for a woman to have erotic fulfillment in a serious relationship with a man she views as lesser or weaker than herself. And there seem to be serious limits with respect to the ability of pure male beauty to truly fulfill this requirement in an invested relationship. So more female hook ups and casual relationships with dominant and hot guys of any status, but probably fewer and fewer invested long term relationships as fewer and fewer men can meet the combination of a heightened requirement for physical beauty combined with the traditional requirement of higher status (however measured).

I am a women studying stem fields. (computer science). We are a small stems field college. I rarely see any women here. Now that my female classmate quit, I am the only one in my class now :( For the dating market here on my campus I’d say it’s not looking good for men. But they should focus on their studies anyway. Our college maybe small but we produce a hell good of stems graduates. Companies are always coming every year to hire. I just started and I already got job offers. The professors warned the students about the companies that they will offer us cars and good paycheck at the end of our studies and it’s good but please graduate first so you can even earn better.

I have seen a trend in Corporations where they are taking on high performing high school graduates without a university education as apprentices and most of these seem to be young men who had insight enough to stay the hell away from the debt and cult trap of university. Assuming Corporations don’t overdo gender quotas these young guys should go far. I think education is only one small strand of a holistic equation seeking to artificially prop up women.

I say this as someone with a Masters Degree in one of the better liberal arts subjects and at a time when post graduate degrees at least had some prestige because they were very rare. I had to engage in a lot of work and independent education, further formal education and reflection to overcome the shortfalls that came with a university education. In hindsight I wish I did a trade and I could still have had a very fulfilling and rounded education in a well stocked public library and from the Internet.

At the top levels, a woman will have to be 12/10(not just appearance) to date a man who's 10/10 because such a man will have so many great and amazing options that he won't settle for his equal, but will demand more.

At average levels, this will be flipped and will go the other way around with women wanting to date up and having so many comparable/average options so a 5/5 woman wouldn't want to date a 5/5 man, but only someone above her.

The ultimate "female dating strategy" (lol) is to find an very ambitious/driven and loyal young man of her age while they are both like around ~20yo, who's at her level currently or even slightly below, because older they get, the more sought after he will be and women who are better than her(again, not just appearance) will be vying for affections of such a man and it'll be increasingly harder for her to find such a man the older she gets, not because of the so called wall, but because of other women/competition.

the discussion here is once again extremely US centric. universities are dominated by women here in finland too. student loans and debt etc. are not really a relevant issue here.

i think it's great to be honest. the percentage of women in "hard" sciences has been increasing, just as the percentage of men in "soft" sciences. the gender split in new students who major in maths for example is already like 50/50 IIRC.

as a man who has never cared about STEM or other nerd shit i feel like we are starting to approach equality. i don't see anything natural about men prefering hard sciences and women soft ones. my major was sociology and i minored in e.g. philosophy, psychology and media studies.

i have also taken some courses in stuff like cultural anthropology, art history etc.

nowadays i'm a writer who writes both prose and poetry. i want more men to like "feminine" things such as poetry. i put feminine in quotes because we don't even have to go that far back in history that poetry was a man's thing. ever heard the concept of a "warrior poet"?

Wouldn't that just be common sense?

The past few years I’ve seen a lot of articles on women’s interest sites about how educated women can’t find men of equal status to marry.

If only it were that simple. But they don't want equal status (ideally) in a partner. They want greater status. So as their gender's overall status increases, relative to men, obviously they're going to find a diminishing pool of truly attractive candidates.

This is the catch-22 of female empowerment.

women will struggle to date because they date up, men will struggle too. In terms of degree, if women keep going into things like psy. gender studies, art etc. and men into physics engineering, then nothing will change

Women now make up 60% of college students. The number is expected to grow to 2 women / 1 man in a few years. How will this affect the dating market?
