I'd say that women are probably happier with the current state of dating than any other time in history that "dating" has existed. They have much more choice and much more power than ever before.

On the other hand, people are always constantly trying to improve their situation in general, so women are always going to have some complaints about dating no matter how much choice and power they have. Other people are never going to be exactly how one wants them to be.

A lot of women supposedly are getting depressed and anxious, but I think that has more to do with the pressure of a dual role of having to work and take care of a family once a woman settles down than it does with what the current dating situation is like for women.

Pretty pleased with it. OLD allowed me to find my dream partner; I likely wouldn't have met him otherwise since he worked from home at the time we met. It opens up options outside of the immediate social circle, which are shrinking for both sexes, it seems.

OLD has been way more favorable toward me than irl; you can't demand specific niche traits from most 5 irl options, but you can from the vast amount of people online. You have a better chance of finding a less common trait because there's more people on there, you just vet out anyone who doesn't fit.

People irl tend to be around you more from circumstance than because of having things in common, unless maybe you're counting church or a club of some kind. Even then there's no guarantee you'll be compatible. OLD is low stakes and fast.

I think if women hated the dating market they would actively be trying to change it - which we have shown to be able to do. A lot of early feminism was women effectively working together to have options other than the traditional gender roles they were stuck with. Women have been and always will be very very good at coming together to obtain resources and positive outcomes for the whole of the group. Men whether biological wired or culturally are too individualistic to garner the same bargaining power. There’s always going to be outliers of course but for most women they have no real incentive to change the dating market. It works for them. They can date who they want, have sex or not, get married and have kids or not, etc. What’s needed to change?

So women are doing really well financially nowadays and as they start to out-earn a lot of men their standards go up. A lot of women basically price themselves out of the relationship market because most men simply can't meet their requirements. Many would rather stay single than lower their standards, which is completely fair obviously.

So women end up in a situation where they are all competing for a very small percentage of exceptional men, and these men are not stupid, they KNOW how valuable they are and they don't want to commit. So they just have their fun with these women and discard them for the next hot young lady.

So the real losers are the average women who get pumped and dumped by these elite men with nothing to show for it other than a high body count, and the average men who end up sexless for the majority of their youth with their only options being obese women or chads leftovers who are settling for them, neither side is really happy in this situation when you really think about it.

The only real winners in this dating market are the truly elite men who can have sex with all these different beautiful women in their prime without committing to any of them. So as a man you should focus all your energy on becoming a winner because it's either that or die alone.

Is dating better because I dont need a partner? Yes. Not being forced into a relationship with a man whom I dont like or even love, just in order to put food on my plate, a roof over my head and not die is, I guess, a step up from the alternative. But isnt that the basic that a human being should expect? To be able to earn my own living instead of being societally forced to marry (and have sex) for mere physical survival? Pretty sure we're talking about the most basic expectations of life here....

Otherwise is the dating market "the best its ever been". Omg, no. Most men only want sex. They have no interest in long term relationships, marriage or children. A hefty percentage of those will lie or lead you on to get that sex ("of course I'm single", "I'm open to the idea of a relationship"....).

And for the ones that arent up front about only looking for sex.... Many are so non committal that they cant even commit to being non commital (dating app asks: "what are you looking for", men respond: "dont know"). Most will match but never message. Most who message dont say anything meaningful and you have to wonder if they are bots (" hey, how r u, watcha up 2"). And most who do talk never ask for a date.

As a woman, its an absolute train wreck.

Women who are hot and date around for fun are having a great time, all other women not so much. Women who aren’t at least a 7-8 on the hotness scale are usually ignored even after matching on dating apps. By this I mean that while men swipe yes to every women on a dating app if a women who isn’t super hot matches with him he will either ignore her or get drunk and send her a message at 2am asking her if she is DTF. That includes not just chads but average and below average men too. Men react the same way to women who are looking for a LTR/marriage too. Most men seem to think most women are super hot and DTF random strangers which is why they complain about women having it so easy and taking advantage of men while in reality most women aren’t doing this. While dating apps are better than a bar or club there simply isn’t enough filters to help women find quality men. Because of this dating apps are a waste of time for women too which is why there aren’t as many women on dating sites as men.

I’m neutral. Aunts, cousins, friends—majority have married the first man that proposed. These are all average men, for the most part—some below average.

Most of these women I know have been cheated on, slapped, punched etc. Most of the women who’ve gone through this were virgins going into their marriage/relationships. They cooked, cleaned, gave them children.

Is it better now, then it was? I think so. Could it be better? Always.

This is not to say that there aren’t good men and that there weren’t any good men.

It’s just that you had to be a very lucky woman.

Dating is generally okay, men tend to be great the first three weeks to six months in. After that, they stop trying, act entitled to a lot without giving the same back, and relationships start to get draining. And it only gets worse the longer you’re together and after marriage/kids. Of course this isn’t always the case, but that’s the pattern.

Also, OLD isn’t that safe, you have to meet up eventually and the person could misrepresent themselves.

They're probably content, definitely happier about it than some previous generations, but not necessarily totally happy about it. Dating is a pretty messy deal for everyone.

I'll copy part of my older comment if you don't mind:

I think a lot of confusion comes from the fact that we're still in the transitioning period. People have so much choice, they aren't doing a good job at actually making the choice. There are people who want to have traditional relationships, others want nothing to do with it and a good portion of both men and women want "to have their cake and eat it too" pissing each other and everyone else in the process.

So even with things you've listed women have some things to complain about, just as men do. It doesn't mean women overall would prefer to "go back", compared to the past, yeah, sure, we have it great. There are still things to figure out though.

Some complaints I've seen:

A lack of quality men (whatever different people mean by it)
Men who are ready to lie to get sex
Men who don't get "no" as an answer
Sexual harassment, stalking, date rapes etc.
Men obsessed with porn
Men who are shitty at bed
Men who don't put enough effort into relationships
Cheating
etc.

Personal experience in the end. Dating has been really great for me, but I got really lucky - I've married my first partner. We aren't religious, we didn't plan for it, we just met each other really early and found that we have good compatibility and we're in love. So things have worked out for us. Most women I know closely who want to date/have family have generally good experience. There are still some terrible stories and all, but it's got significantly better compared to our mothers or grandmothers' experience.

Dating apps aren't completely safe at all. They work by setting up a one-on-one date with someone you've never met before. That's way worse than meeting someone with friends to look out for you until you're comfortable. I'm not sure how it would be in women's favour anyway, it'd just put them on a level with men. Same with needing relationships, men never needed then and are still less often pushed into them. Certainly, there are better things and worse things than before, so there's still a lot someone could complain about.

I’m happy that I can be happy single after two long-term relationships (one was a nicer relationship and the other I got cheated on which hurt my self confidence a bit). However, when I step foot into the dating pool, it’s hard to find people who I click with. I am attractive and men often approach me, but oftentimes they aren’t upfront about their intentions or are just interested in sex because I don’t have much in common with guys where I live for some reason. I like gaming and partying (edit: usually people like one or the other but not both) but people with those interests are less likely to be in my area, or if they are, they have some political or value differences. I also have issues with dating specific to having ADHD, but most women don’t have to deal with that and it’s a little more specific to me.

I am not thrilled with my situation. I am in a large city where their are more men than women. I make more money than most the guys that want to date me so I can’t quit my job to become a stay at home Mom the way. Guys here even curate there dating apps, get professional pictures taken for them and so on. And, so most women are vying for this one profile (ex: West elm Caleb). And most men are just trying to fuck yet I am looking for a relationship and would like to quit my job eventually once married. I seem to be in the wrong dating market geographically for what I want.

There are so many assumptions baked into this that need examining.

Maybe women don't like men as much as men like women. Maybe men are not as attractive as women in some objective sense, possibly innately or maybe just because women work harder at it. Or both.

Maybe women treat men better than men treat women, again, possibly because of socialization and possibly due to innate differences. Maybe women need men less than the other way around, for various reasons.

So while there is a sexual leverage advantage in women's favor, that doesn't necessarily mean dating is in women's overall advantage because they may simply have a lot more to lose and a lot less to gain. I'm not saying this is necessarily true, but it could well be. So we do have to unpack our assumptions here.

I really need to meet people through organic means to develop attraction and connection, but because society is increasingly atomized that’s more difficult than maybe it was in generations past.

So overall, I’d say I’m not happy with the current state of dating, but it is what it is so I don’t spend much time thinking about how else it could be.

That said, yes I’m glad I didn’t basically have to get married off to the first man that would have me at age 21, like my mother did, in order to be able to live a full and interesting life or even survive on my own. So yeah, that’s a plus.

There are a lot of things that are obviously still very bad or at least not favorable for women:

- To be very dramatic right off the bat: the risk of getting assaulted, raped, stalked etc. when meeting up with a stranger. You can weed out some of the worst risk factors yourself, of course, but you may never be sure.

- way more common, less "severe", I guess: Guys only wanting to hook up (and not being honest about it). Or, you know, just being honest is annoying as well when you are spammed with requests like that despite having profile that says you are looking for long-term. Generally speaking, also the insanely low effort some are willing to put even these hook ups they are pursuing.

- a lot of guys that are trying to bring you down by saying you are worthless after your 30's. Also the fact that guys will always remain deireable for women their same age, or are able to make themselves super desireable to women at any stage of their life; the fact that guys are not reduced to outward apppearances when it comes to dating and their "value" on their dating market.

- various different struggles that are not particularly gender-specific that we are experiencing as much as others, like ghosting, flakyness, low effort etc.

In the average relationship and in the average marriage, the woman puts in more work. Marriage and relationships are not actually beneficial for women. Studies show married women are less happy than single women than vice versa. Which goes against our societys conditioning- pressuring women to want to marry and that men are losing out by marrying.

In the average marriage a woman will be expected to:

-work full time like a man and make decent enough money to be financially stable...gone are the days where men dont care about income! My dating experience and seeing others date tell me men do care, they dont want to be the sole provider anymore. The only time I see women not working is when she has small kids and thats just because of the cost of childcare in todays world and maybe the importance of shaping their young brains. Once theyre in school its back to work. Even among very traditional circles I see this now.

-she will still be expected to do the majority of housework and childcare. If you want to depress yourself, read studies on families where the wife is the breadwinner she still does more housework and childcare. This shows these duties fall on women and that women do not end up doing it because they contribute less financially or work less hours. Also, countless studies show women bear the mental load.

-she will need to be emotionally and socially superior. While feminism has made economic strides for women in terms of equality (which are needed- its why women are less likely to stay in terrible marriages), the social inequality still exists. Women are expected to be more kind, selfless and emotionally supportive. Women's character is often attacked more than men's character if she does something bad or makes a mistake.

-she will need to maintain her appearance more than her husband. Husbands are given more leniency for letting themselves go. She will need to do this even though she works full time and still does the majority of housework and childcare plus planning 90% of what it takes to run a household.

What is the average man expected to do when marrying?

-be financially stable

Thats it.

I'd rather be born a man. Becoming more financially stable is much easier than looking 25 forever with more and more responsibility.

I am happy about the state of dating because I get to have a choice and I don’t have to play housewife by default. The tools are far from perfect (and they will always be like that) but at least they are a good filter for the people that don’t have the same intentions. Some people play a very defensive game or are jaded by previous experiences-there is no way to avoid meeting them but there are ways to not let them into your life or get involved with them.

All in all, I think having a partner that you want vs a partner that you need is a much better deal and lays the foundation of a more loving relationship. If you expect the dating scene to be made only of people that are honest and emotionally adjusted for a relationship, that’s utopic. But the good part is that you are free to try more options to meet people and filter the ones that wouldn’t be a good fit.

Yeah, definitely. It's pretty easy to find people irl and online especially if you are thin and have a decent face. My match rate when swiping for women is absurdly high compared to my guy friends. Don't need to post the stats for swiping on men lol the person I'm dating rn I met through a mutual friend who set us up and it actually worked out, for now.

I'm super glad how things have changed on a social level in terms of freedom to choose. My grandma is a very smart woman who just sorta attached to my grandpa cuz she had to being a time when women were just expected to marry, have kids and be a housewife. She is brilliant, has done the nyt crossword since forever basically, reads a ton. I often wonder what she could have become had she had the freedom I did. Also always think how if I were born the same year she was how unhappy I would've been. I went to college, found a career I liked, decided having kids is not for me, explored my sexuality. I love my life and I would've been utterly depressed not having more choices in what I did with my life and/or needing to be reliant on someone else's income. I couldn't even imagine.. like a bird with its wings clipped for the women that don't want to be housewives and are more interested in academics/career, enjoy the being single, etc. Some women do totally strive for more traditional "duties" and lifestyle though. Having the choice is everything.

I’m not looking for an LTR, don’t want kids, and I’m not a relationship girl, I like not being forced into marriage or monogamy, and I enjoy meeting new people and having fun. I enjoy going out, trying new foods, arcades, comedy shows, drinks, art shows, cooking classes, etc. I enjoy being out and about. I enjoy exploring the city I’m in (Austin), and It’s been pretty fun, can’t complain.

Not really. I don't like how social media and dating apps are essentially replacing real life interactions with people in public. Shared community spaces are disappearing... and freely talking with strangers in a public space is sort of frowned upon. It's good that fewer women don't get hit on or harrassed anymore. But dating is now becoming relegated to online spaces more and more which is killing our face-to-face social skills. It's also killing our senses of compromise because of how selective they can get. Which is probably why so many women think men on dating apps are unattractive.

I'm not a social person and I am terminally online. I am also unattractive. Dating apps should be perfect for someone like me, but I am starting to despise them for everything they represent. How they commodify relationships and erode our ideas of them. Yet I need to use them for a chance at a relationship because I hate going out and interacting with people due to anxiety and laziness.

Dating especially dating apps are very much a woman's favor because they're run by women. Tender, bumble, Hinge. Women still have troubles dating but the issues they have with dating is nothing compared to the issues that men have dating. Most of the clients of dating coaches are men. So today's dating world most definitely benefits women to the detriment of men's dating lives. Hell there are tons of men who don't even have a love life or a sex life and I'm one of them. Maybe I'm out of touch but I've never tried online dating. I'm not a woman either lol. I've met quite a few ladies who ended up as lovers for a time but remain good friends years later. I don't approach women thinking they could be potential partners, I'm just friendly, respectful and honest when we meet, actually having conversations. I don't try to be anybody I'm not. We talk and laugh and get to know each other a bit, no expectations. It's about respect and having a laugh. If things go in "whatever direction" we can follow that if we both want. No pressure or expectation. Everybody wants to have a good time, sex is only a small part of that good time, there is so much to do out in the world together. Maybe I'm out of touch, I just meet people at random irl, say hi and chat. I make it clear with my way that I'm not a threat, I'm just a man, you're just a woman, we can talk about something for 10 seconds or we can talk about something for 10 minutes, or whatever we choose. We don't have the camouflage of our profile pic, we're out there and real.

I'm not happy with the current state of modern relationships (including marriage). Although I have more options career-wise, and in terms of forging my own destiny through life, I feel like my romantic life has been a huge letdown.
