TL;DR, the "patriarchy" feminists are against is a social ideal/culture that is created and maintained by our laws, policies, and norms. It is not an individual man or group, but a cumulative effect of social and political choices real people are making.

The word "Patriarchy" requires context. Of course, in the micro sense, a singular family unit can be described as matriarchal or patriarchal or neither. This description depends on the actual make up and functioning of that family.

In a macro sense, patriarchy describes a culture and/or social system and, in that way, is describing cumulative effects or even simply ideals. For example, lots of Caribbean and Central/South American countries are known to have a patriarchal/machismo society/culture. The laws are written to favor men (broadly); men make more money, men get away with abuse, men have more power and work to maintain it. We also know in those same countries, there are families led by women because the males died or abandoned them, or families compromised mostly of women by fluke of nature. They still live in a patriarchal society, even if their own family is led by women. And being a matriarchal unit in a patriarchal society does not mean that unit will be punished or killed off to maintain the patriarchy (like burning witches at the stake) or that the society isn't a patriarchy. It could mean a lot of things, like that there are always people in society that go against the norm, it could also be that the matriarchal unit is still teaching its women patriarchal ideals, to grow up get married and do what your husband says, etc. in that way, a matriarchal unit can still help maintain a patriarchal society.

Changing a patriarchal society is possible, but it's not easy. Like in America, until women could vote, the US was clearly a patriarchy. That begins to shift in 1919. But married women couldn't have their own money/property, like credit cards, without their husband's approval, abortions were illegal, etc. into the 1970s and since the 1970s, when our culture appeared to be equalizing, men have been working to take back the shift of power.

We never got to a matriarchal society. Even after women could vote, the culture still heavily heavily promoted and favored male-led, heterosexual, married, Christian, child-bearing family units. That was encouraged by law and policy. And individual social shame, hence the stigma against divorced women and single mothers (and much less against single fathers).

But now, we are seeing the return of truly patriarchal ideals. Some politicians are trying to get rid of no fault divorce, which was more favorable to women who wanted to leave. Lots are rolling back abortion rights, ignoring that women are literally dying as a result. Complaining about schools that enroll more than 50% women. That is a patriarchal resurgence. What do you think the effect of these policies will be? More power and rights for women??? If you do, you're simply an idiot.

Patriarchy is just a world built on the male fantasy. Sometimes some fantasies can't function and they shift to a different form of a man's ultimate fantasy but... Its still very much clearly there and they hurt society in general. Just because women are no longer legal posessions (slaves) of their husbands and fathers doesn't mean the male fantasy isn't still running rampant through society.

Just look at US leadership - a president with a history of sexual assault and a VP who thinks childcare is the domain of mothers and grandmothers, who is made uncomfortable by child-free women. I’m a feminist (though certainly not an expert in gender studies, so take my opinion with a grain of salt), and I tend to use the word “patriarchy” to refer to governments or other systemic institutions rather than family. The main issue for me is parity of participation and ensuring the government, which is supposed to represent its people, reflects the true diversity of the country (or other district). When most positions of power (such as government representatives or those with significant control over the world’s resources) are held by mainly one group of people, the needs of other groups will tend to be neglected. Even if this group is very well-meaning and considerate, their lack of personal experience living as a member of a different group means that their capacity to take into account the voices of other groups is severely limited, which could, and does, have grave consequences. Throughout the world (even the West), men substantially over-represent these positions of power in proportion to their representation of the population as a whole. In the US, women represent only 28% of seats in Congress, compared to 50% of the US population. And this over-representation has existed for centuries - since the invention of a very notion of a government. This means that when systems of government and other broad-scale administration were being designed, women’s perspectives were very crucially ignored, and this ignorance was thus perpetuated and further embedded over the following years. One way this impact manifests is in the policies a country’s government makes (to use the US as an example again): from the denial of women’s right to vote, to the overturning of Roe Vs Wade and subsequent abolition of women’s reproductive healthcare facilities, to the restriction of birth control, to the consistent failure to reduce human trafficking over recent years. And this isn’t even mentioning intersectionality and the disproportionate and unique impacts faced by women of colour, trans women, disabled women, and/or women part of other marginalised groups.

I’ve already rambled on quite a bit, but I also just want to add that the patriarchy perpetuates stereotypical hunter/gatherer-esque ideals, which is what leads to systemic issues faced by men. Eg. the promotion of ‘male stoicism and strength’ very clearly impacts men’s mental health in a way that it is not true for women. I just wanted to say that I do very much care for men’s issues, and I wouldn’t identify with feminism if I believed it would negatively impact the lives of men. I hope this all makes enough sense

The patriarchy does exist, it’s basically women just complaining about chad supremacy and being angry that since more men are extreme outliers in terms of success there’s guys who can basically treat women however he pleases and still have them falling over him or that he’s some super genius and ends up a billionaire.

The flaws with the concept of “The patriarchy” is

1: Women fixate on an extreme minority of powerful men while totally ignoring their privilege over average men and claiming this privilege basically should just be ignored since men should be focusing on the patriarchy oppressing them

2: there is a huge “Women are wonderful” effect where literally everything bad women do is blamed on the patriarchy. Woman humiliates and cheats on a man? She internalized the patriarchy. It couldn’t be that women themselves are bad, because equality feminists fundamentally see women as having no real agency or power.

3: Women look at situations like men who literally work longer hours making more money, while getting taxed more, call it patriarchal oppression (aren’t men oppressed by working longer hours?), and generally there’s a tendency to cherry pick every example of men being advantaged over women in some way as being a cultural/social system of oppression while shrugging off things like longer lifespan, much better median dating prospects, bias in the court system, receiving far more government money than men, as either the nature of things or as justice. Democracies have a majority woman electorate who regularly vote for systemic institutional sexism and they do mental backflips to argue this is anti-sexism and men still rule politics becusse women vote for men and that’s the patriarchy’s fault.

Problem is, said rights are constantly under fire. IMO, it's not enough for people to have "equal rights" on paper, when all sorts of people are consistently desiring for them to be taken away. Despite what you might believe when you browse on Reddit, the world in general is still pretty conservative. It ends to uphold institutions like religion, capitalism, and yes, patriarchy as well. The latter being the one that tends to demand the kind of strict gendered expectations and roles that get argued about every single day on this very sub.

Maybe I'm off but this has never been my understanding of patriarchy. Yes, some very powerful and elite groups of men tend to control almost everything, but that's not exactly the same as men simply dominating over women. Usually, it's the gendered expectation for men to perform as dominant in their relationships and even their families, especially by being some kind of "bread winner" which can really mean slaving away to make other people rich and powerful, and making more children and raising them so they can also eventually slave away and make other people rich and powerful. Likewise, it's a gendered expectation for women to be submissive and bear a man's children, not exactly out of personal desire or biological drive, but do to economic and societal coercion or even just straight up force. Historically this has been the case for women, and some recent political events have made it very clear that as soon as women gain any sort of access to any kind of freedom (like reproductive healthcare), certain people are unfortunately very eager to take those rights away.

Systemic wealth inequality and the general living standard decline of the middle/lower classes at expense of the upper class increase.

Women rights have had huge leaps and bounds over the last 50 years. But now all of us are getting bent over and fucked. I thought this too, but getting divorced I found it was not so. We had fully joint accounts, joint everything. When it came to 'separating' our credit cards, I thought we would have to go into the bank together, sign stuff etc. Turns out I could cancel her credit card over the phone (and she couldn't do jack shit about my card).

In a bunch of ways the bank only recognised my wife as an appendage of me and once we were separating they only wanted me.

This isn't even to mention feminists sayings mens issues are the fault of muh patriarchy.

I think that this is true if you reclassify patriarchy as 'gendered social norms'. So being stoic and not talking about your feelings does hurt men, and it is because of those gendered stereotypes.

Patriarchy - as a literal concept, does not exist anymore. But when talking about patriarchy as a cultural force, it isn’t about the literal definition. Patriarchy - at least as defined in modern social/political discourse - is more about established cultural norms, the way one interacts with the world, etc.

In other words, patriarchy isn’t about the literal laws and structures, its about how people view the world and interact with it. It’s about beliefs or behaviours that are currently viewed as default that are being challenged.

You can just Google “is the patriarchy real” to get more educated and nuanced explanations of patriarchy through a feminist lens. On Reddit you’re getting snippets of a lifetime of education, and some rad fems and some terfs and some fresh faces feminists who are still in their questioning phase.

What a conveniently narrow definition of the word. In reality, the definition is broader as a " social system in which positions of authority are primarily held by men" (wikipedia).

This definition, which was only on click away on the internet, immediately debunks all your arguments. Because it is not about equal rights, but about who holds the power. Even today in the West, after decades of fighting for equality, positions of power are still primarily held by men, and as a consequence, equal rights are currently under attack.

Obviously, the patriarchy as a social system can have negative effects on men, too. A system is not identical to its individual members. And structures within a system can be bad even for a lot of members of the ruling class within that system.

The funny thing is the patriarchy is literally working along side each genders instincts and desires.

What women and men seek in partners and require to feel fulfillment.

So feminism go against the privileges women had. Like there clear difference between genders wants needs and capacity.

Like cause women had more likely to had physical issues or struggle and more likely at times to have more period cramps or issues cause some women barely can function on it.

Like work always had the slower you work the less valuable you are and the less money you would get. The faster you are the more productive you where the much more money you would earn. So also to keep the most productive people in house.

So if a men was working much harder much faster yes he would earn more even if the function was the same. But even do the women if she os less productive would earn less. That faster and more productive men would by society be pushed to provide his resources to the women and make up the difference. But now in the seek of fairness and going at the top and pushing men aside and saying it's sexist to go based in marit and effectiveness. But you still have that most women in general look for men on the same level or higher economic level but there is none higher. And many men on your same level will still pick the more lower level women in earning in a lot of causes.

And it's the one of many cases why women honestly hurt them self more then gained anything. Now no matter what mental issues or phycal strain you have gotta work work work work. Cause your equal right. And just like many women like to pick and choose what benefits them with there gender roles. The more men also don't like to take part at all in the classic gender roles. So protecting and providing. Or paying for dates.. what are you talking about we are equal right. Im not your dad.

But that's all the patriarchy really is working alongside your instinct and wants or needs of each gender. Also a big reason for it is to keep public order and the people be patriotism to willing to fight and die to protect there home and country. That's why it is called patriarchy. A type of level of fulfillment is needed to have people willing to want to fight or willing to die for there country to be Patriotic. Why many of those privileges where given to both sides but those privileges had responsibilities attached to them.

With the fight on the patriarchy. So are people not so patriotic. So willing to fight or die to protect there nation is also much less.

And inturn society in time more dangerous for women.

To destroy a country all you have to do is break the family unit and the family bound. So to push father out of the household. My problem is how it's used to shift the blame, when a man does a negative traditional thing he has toxic masculinity, if a woman does it she's a poor victim of the patriarchy

Women have no reason to care about the woes of irrelevant, unattractive men they had nothing to do with in the first place. Moreover, there is nothing they can do to help anyway.

This creates a nasty conundrum, because women become hyperfixated on the success and level of well-being attractive men experience. This top percentile has such a qualitative experience of life that women can't help but be jealous and throw around words like "patriarchy" and "male privilege", unaware that they're referring to a small section of men who "made it".

The rest of men are just ghosts. They exist in the shadows, with their only purpose being keeping the lights on and generating resources.

A country just dropped their martial age to single digits, there are countries where women cant show their faces, drive, or even go outside nor speak in public. There are countries where if a female couldnt prove SA, even when it was incest and CSA, it would be seen as adultry and she was be severely punished.

Women are only more important for nurturing and raising the child until it is 7, after 7 the father plays a more important role, when it comes to inserting good values into the child. Unfortunately in this modern age, society doesn't want the father in the picture anymore. Hence the growing amount of single mothers and the highest amount of disfunctional kids ever raised, that struggle with all kinds of issues and the cycle is going to continue.

It does exist but it's not the awful thing feminists make it out to be, yes men have occupied positions of power but then said men have always had to shoulder the responsibility of having that power. Feminists want that power but also want to duck out and let someone else deal with it when the going gets tough. Feminists also think occupying what was once a male dominated field means being as arrogant and insufferable as possible because women don't actually know how to perform male roles without massively over correcting.

Patriarchy is a neutral word, unlike what many fake feminists would say. It existed, but has died a slow death. Back in the day, not many women in the trenches of WW1 or building the Empire State building or discovering antibiotics. Sure they had some achievements, but most knew their place, and it wasn’t shameful to stay home and raise a family.

Then in the last century they finally got their equal rights and equal pay, and look where that’s lead us to today: logic replaced by emotions, masculine women and feminized men, and the slow decay of the nuclear family as its shameful to be a family support now. The alphabet crew has added a million letters thanks to the logic of feelings, Disney movies teach boys to “step aside, it’s women’s turn now!” And the superheroes have all been replaced to match the ‘feelings agenda.’ Of course this had to happen alongside the invention of the smartphone and rise of social media, so now our kids are addicted to feminist ideology, and as a result, boys are growing up not going to college, not applying themselves, not joining the military, etc etc etc. it’s the feminist world that has them addicted to video games, that and lack of father figures in too many households.

The idea of patriarchy as a problem is a joke that these online feminists have conjured up on Reddit because they’ve got nothing better to do with their time, but they need a scapegoat.

The patriarchy is very real… in developing countries. Many countries in South Asia, North Africa, and Middle East legitimately have many societal problems and barriers for women that need to be called out and removed. But we all know that feminists will never fight for those people.

A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
