If 90% of writers are of one sex, it is the male/female opinion section.

Some people like to redefine the word "racism" so that it only applies to those in power. Fine. But that doesn't change the underlying issue. Treating someone differently based solely on their gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. is morally wrong and has a negative impact on society. Even if the difference in treatment is a positive one against a historically marginalized group. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Like, having race as a considerable metric is arguably racist, for sure, but that doesn't necessarily make it "mostly" how they decide.

Also you cannot make race or gender part of the job requirement unless it's a bonafide reason, for example you could make being a women a requirement if your hiring for a women's restroom attendant. Serious Question. What's the goal with a post like this?

Should HuffPo be required to hire a certain % of each race including whites? Or should they be free of race restrictions and be allowed to hire whomever they want?
Are you just trying to publicly shame HuffPo so they'll change their policy?

I've just never understood a lot of what I see posted on this subreddit. A lot of you seem to be conservative or libertarian, and thus (I assume) against government intrusion and regulation. Yet, the overwhelming majority of what I see posted seems to scream out, "Look at this race/sex double-standard. Please, government, regulate companies hiring practices and change laws to prevent this."

I guess it could just be a place to come and complain. Which is fine, I suppose. But I guess my overall question is... so what? So HuffPo is hiring non-white males. Why should we care unless it's a call for it to be changed somehow.

It's not to boycott HuffPo. I would be surprised if the readership of this subreddit and HuffPo has a lot of overlap.

I don't have a problem with it in a profession like this where you need to bring in subscribers and readers. I think it's a dumb tactic that won't work, but if that's the way you want to run your business more power to you.

When it comes to creating content, I don't have a concern. Now if they use the same hiring practices for the behind the scenes people not making the material for the public, I'd be concerned.

I see no problem with this. They are an openly left-wing publication that aims to represent ethnic minorities. The big boss is a woman who actively supports female rights movements. Also, they give a voice to minority opinions in a media climate dominated by large, right-wing media moguls (e.g. Murdoch).

This is their goal and I don’t really see anything wrong with it per se.

I have issues in the way they word it. For example, what is a ‘person of colour’, what is ‘Asian’ and how can you do ‘better’ than providing equal representation? I mean, do we need more Chinese/Russian loyalists to be publishing because their views are widely shunned by left and right wing media outlets. IMO some opinions are squashed to the side for good reason.

For the sake of trying to have a discussion about this I have a question, don't they have a right to try to publish an equal amount of articles across all races, ethnicities, sexes, etc? I get where you can flip that argument and say if a publisher made a point to say we need to publish more white men's articles that would be sexist and racist. But that doesn't appear to be case because a majority of journalists are white men some data to back this up.

I'm making an attempt to see this from both sides. I don't agree with the way she is boasting about this and that articles shouldn't just be published for the sake of marking of diversity check boxes. However, I also think that we should have more articles published by minorities and we have to start somewhere.
