The double standard exists for men and women for a reason. For the average guy, hooking up with an average girl is NOT an easy feat, whereas a girl can pretty much hook up with soooo many guys compared to her "looks match".

This key difference is why women being "sluts" is inherently a bad thing, and a guy being a "slut" is completely different because that man must have some KEY trait that DRAWS women to him since naturally they are far more selective.

You say this difference is WHY it’s bad, but I don’t get the connection? Things being easy doesn’t make it bad, does it?? That doesn’t really make sense, and we don’t see it this way other sex differences. For example, it is often easier for women to give their partners orgasms than it is for men. Do men think women who get them off are bad, and wish them to actively avoid doing that?? It’s easier for men to reach the top shelf than for women. Do we think men who reach things from high shelves are bad and they shouldn’t do it? Do you believe we should partake in “high shelf reaching shaming” for tall people because it’s just so easy for them?

Also, I don’t think it’s true male sluts have all these women who were highly selective pick him and apparently love him and he’s just rejecting them to go with other women. Usually they sleep with sluts who are less selective and want the same thing he does - sex. If they have women wanting more and thinking they were “selecting” then usually that means the guy was lying or manipulating, not usually a trait considered “good”.

I think the double standard and hypocrisy is wrong. I personally value monogamy and hold myself to a standard of sexual discipline and therefore would absolutely not be with a man who sleeps around. Men are delusional thinking that the modest women they consider “high value” want the community bicycle who’s been in bed with half their town. The vast majority of women who choose not to engage in hookup culture want a man who holds himself up to the same standard, especially if she has religious motivations. The only women who are more drawn to man whores are typically promiscuous themselves.

Slut shaming is wrong because you can express your preferences and filter out accordingly without being an ass and “shaming” someone.

If I don’t want to date someone because they aren’t attractive to me, I’m not going to call them ugly and repulsive or speculate why they turned out looking how they did. Just like you can decide that you’d prefer to date someone with fewer past partners without insulting everyone who doesn’t meet that requirement and making assumptions about who they are and why they have sex.

I very much beg to differ. I have yet to come across a man with a high body count who has achieved that high number through ethical means. If he were to be honest, ask him to recount while excluding women he had to either: lie to, get intoxicated, mislead, lovebomb, or are barely legal…to get in their pants. Shaming overall is not a positive. Making someone feel shitty about themselves pretty much never makes them make better decisions. I don't like smoking. It's not for me, I don't enjoy having a partner who smells like an ashtray. Your logic may make internal sense, but it starts with incorrect premises.

You’re saying women are more selective, so when a woman isn’t selective it means something’s wrong with her. But women aren’t just naturally more selective. Women are selective because being “too sexual” gets them called sluts, ruins their reputation, can get them assaulted or killed. You’re looking at the result of a system that punishes women for sexuality and calling it proof women who have sexuality anyway must be broken.

Men on average not wanting to marry promiscuous women doesn’t make it right to shame those women. Men on average used to not want to marry women who worked or had opinions. The preference existing doesn’t mean compliance with it is morally required.

And “she doesn’t respect herself” - that’s interpretation. Maybe she likes sex. Maybe she’s figuring out what she wants. Maybe she doesn’t see sex the way you do. Reading pathology onto it is convenient though. Makes her easier to write off.

There’s no winning the game anyway. Don’t have sex, you’re a prude. Have sex, you’re a slut. The acceptable amount shifts depending on who’s judging. Women just stay anxious about their value instead of doing what they want.

Why shouldn’t men’s preferences determine what’s shameful? Because preferences aren’t neutral. They come from somewhere. The shaming isn’t necessary

Shaming people is a social tool used to make them stop behavior that is harmful to others.

As an example we shame people who park in handicap spots because handicapped people need those spots and we want them to stop parking in them. We don’t shame people who walk to the store instead of driving because that is not behavior that is harmful to others and we don’t need them to stop doing that.

As long as the sex is consensual and enjoyable for both parties involved, having one night stands is not harmful or selfish behavior. And women can continue doing it if they want to.

Because we're a social sex species. It's in our nature to bond over sex, hence why our art and stories have been filled with it and we've been making dildos and contraceptives since before recorded history. Even our closest primate ancestors have social sex. It's also why our sex-to-conception rate is one of the lowest of mammals, and why we desire sex at all parts of the month even though we're only fertile 1-2 days of the month. I think people misunderstand why slut shaming exists, including you.

It's not because of some "lock/key" nonsense, where the men who sleep around have some "secret sauce." He could just be a Chad (genetic lottery winner), rich af (essentially paying for it), or manipulative/predatory.

These are not inherently laudable qualities that make a man more worthy than the guy who isn't slutty. And these qualities also don't make this man superior to the female slut.

Imo, slut shaming exists because:

a) Before the advent of reliable birth control and contraceptives, being promiscuous was one of the highest-risk endeavors any woman could undertake. Heck, female reproduction is inherently high risk, so to expose yourself to pregnancy without serious considerations regarding your mate...borders on insanity. I think it's one of the reasons women are still so much more sexually selective than men tbh, and it's also why women who took such risks in the past would be seen as aberrant individuals.

b) There's an additional layer here regarding men's historical inability to guarantee paternity unless they were in absolute control of a woman's sexual experiences.

Enter modernity, where the considerations have vastly changed, and what people are trying to ascertain is their prospective partner's quality of character, the likelihood of infidelity, and STD exposure. Men and women are on much more equal footing now, and holding on to the previous standard is just... regressive, even if its basis (especially from men's POV. See point "b") is an understandable, biological holdover.

These are just my off-the-cuff musings.

And I'd be happy to sharpen these ideas against those of anyone who disagrees.

the answer to your Q is the same answer i’d give about sexist double standards that negatively impact men like expecting them to be emotionally invulnerable providers: it’s not healthy. it’s not good for boys to be shamed out of expressing their emotions, it’s not good to tie their self worth to their ability to provide and protect. the emotional shaming results in emotional stunting of intimacy and self soothing skills, it kneecaps self esteem same as the provider/protector role shaming, and that low self esteem risks men turning into risk takers at the threat of their health and/or shut-ins at the assumption that they can’t meet perfectionistic standards of masculinity.

slut shaming women is similarly harmful. it also begins to impact girls at young ages, and it’s not just about n count it’s about any and all expression of a girl’s sexuality being shamed. two kids get caught kissing at school and the boy is more likely to get a secret pat on the back while the girl is more likely to get completely shamed with zero positivity. generally speaking it’s expected that boys masturbate, it’s wholely shameful when girls do (side Q for OP, what’s your take on women masturbating, can they do that as much as they want or would you shame them for that too?) boys are expected to take risks, girls are expected to pretend they don’t want it, meaning if they do they feel shame for it. even if it’s just one boy, even if it’s just one time. and then we wonder why women never approach men, or why they don’t say what they want in bed, and we assume it must be 100% biology and not at all related to girls being socialized into passivity and sexual shame before they’ve even had their first period.

it’s a self esteem killer. it’s taking healthy human sexuality, categorizing women’s sexuality as wholely different from men’s, and shaming women for engaging in it unless it’s with a husband. it risks some women becoming overly passive and having an unhealthy/unsatisfying QoL, and it risks some women becoming hypersexual in retribution and having an unhealthy/risky QoL.

oh while i’m at it, another example of an unhealthy double standard against men is the flip side of this sexual double standard, that boys who are seen as passive virgins are shamed for it even if there’s nothing unhealthy, like as a low self esteem symptom, about their lower sex drive.

the questions we should be asking are What’s healthy for a given individual? Is it possible for some women to have a lot of hook ups and go on to be totally fine and healthy? yes. Is it possible for some boys to have no sex for a long time maybe even ever and go on to be totally fine and healthy? yes. Is it possible for some women to engage in sex in unhealthy ways and/or for unhealthy reasons? yes, same as for some men. Is it possible for some men to avoid sex for unhealthy reasons? yes, same as for some women. we shouldnt be enforcing gendered double standards that inadvertently exaggerate what we think is natural to the point of black and white thinking like “men should have lots of sex, women shouldn’t => men are sexual, women aren’t => men who don’t have hook ups are failures, so are women who do.”

we should be identifying healthy and unhealthy behaviors and healthy and unhealthy thought processes that manifest in said behaviors. there is a healthy balance to be found with engaging in sex for every individual, we shouldn’t be automatically judging people based on their gender and their sexual history when it’s entirely possible that a given individual is doing just fine and it’s entirely possible that shaming them will (and does) result in genuinely unhealthy behaviors to cope. there’s a better way for our society to be than that, and tons of men and women can attest to it.

side thought, where do lesbians and gay men fit into the philosophy of your post? it’s even harder for lesbians to hook up and find partners than it is for straight men given the limited dating pool and oppressive social dynamics (including the fallout of slut shaming, a lot of passivity in the lesbian community stems back to being sex-shamed as girls; that subconscious pressure doesn’t just disappear when they come out of the closet). if lesbians are told they should still be held to the “don’t sleep around” standard then that would be a flaw in the argument of ease of hook ups being the determining factor. if lesbians are told they shouldn’t be held to that sexual double standard, then we’re definitely signaling to men that their penises are the problem and that’s not healthy for men, either.

That post is just delusional. The point is, that it's not "something completely different", a man who hooks up with many is just as unattractive. It is either fine for both genders or fine with none and as long as men think it is fine for them (as you just proved with your post), then there will be women asking for equality. In my personal opinion, men should get backlash for their actions as well, but as a woman I am aware that there will just not exist a word like "sluts" or "whores" for guys like there will be for women, ever. There are usually more gendered insults towards women than men so if I can not change society and can not do anything against it, I stay neutral: everyone can do whatever they want. I just personally would not date a guy with a high body count, because he's definitely a slut and it is not attractive to me.

I wouldn’t spend time shaming people who choose a different lifestyle than I do, I just wouldn’t choose to date them. It doesn’t affect me. It’s just a difference in values like religion or politics etc.

Why is being mean to people wrong? We have collectively decided that doing unneccesary harm to other people is bad. Shaming someone for having sex, something that literally almost everyone does, is unneccesary harm, and as a bonus the people who do it usually don't have the same view toward men having sex.

I wouldn't fuck or marry at fat dude. I'm not out here trying to make an anti-fat dude podcast or think piece about how they're less than human even tho it's way easier for a man to be skinny so his failure to do so is more egregious. I just politely declined all fat dudes no podcast required. And I think they can find love and happiness just fine and are worthy of that with someone.

Why is it so hard for men to nod and say "no thanks, but it's really sweet of you to ask and I wish you luck"? Is it the disagreeability goblin in your mind? I fail to see how a woman having sex with lots of men is any of your business. Legitimately, unless someone is being harmed or someone involved is not a consenting adult, you need to let it go. You may not agree with how they're living their life, but it's not your life, so who cares?
