If you have the right body type and clothes, tight fitting clothes can be almost as purely comfortable as loose. But then they have the advantage of not getting tangled easily or caught on things. So yeah, even when camping at home and looking disheveled, many women prefer tights purely for the combination of sufficient comfort and added convenience. There may even be a kind of swaddling effect that makes them more pleasant to wear than really loose stuff.

So I would not judge changes in the sexualization level of clothing purely by how tight clothes are. On the other hand, I would still say that attire is highly sexualized overall by historical standards, regardless of how much of increase in sexualization has taken place since the 1980s.

Skin tight pants are not really in fashion now. Loose high waist jeans are in fashion and I see a lot of younger people wearing them, and apparently low waist loose jeans and the 00' style is making a comeback, though I've only really seen it promoted on the front page of online stores.

I used to wear a lot of skinny jeans since middle school, all the way through high school. As an adult I switched to looser varieties of jeans as they're more comfortable to work in as a florist.

I personally don't buy into female beauty standards that much anymore, and don't particularly feel skinny jeans particularly are pushed upon women, but maybe I just have a totally DGAF mindset and also fashion is changing. I also don't buy into men being oppressors (or the whole patriarchy theory, which I think is ridiculously flawed for that matter). Women are wearing what's in fashion, which changes all the time. Not what men are telling them to wear. Why else do women wear loose jeans or mom jeans? Because we have the choice to wear it and it looks good which makes us feel confident. Women have the freedom to not wear makeup and high heels too yet some choose to wear it, not to please the male gaze but because they feel it looks good on them and boosts their confidence.

Anyway I do sorta think you have a point. I rarely dress up sexy anymore because I feel more comfortable and confident in looser pants and wearing less makeup as I care less about what other people think and not just men but everyone. I think as women get older they start giving less of a fuck what other people think. I'm 25. I rock my loose pants, loose t shirts or loose tank tops and I rock my green joker hair. My co worker thinks I look kinda crazy but it's liberating to DGAF.

Female psychology is complex. Some of the behavior is because of female social matrix competition, some of it is for validation, some of it is for feeling empowered, and, yes, some of it, and probably the root cause of it, is to attract the attention of attractive people.

Some of it’s probably just because it feels better to wear skimpy clothes when it’s hot. I don’t think that there is only one cause to why women seem to be wearing more revealing clothing now than in the past.

The trend for both genders is towards less formal clothing.

Men are no longer expected to wear neckties and business suits at work, outside of a handful of professions (lawyers, politicians, some sales jobs). Morning dress, black and white tie events are a novelty.

Most nightclubs no longer implement dress codes requiring proper shoes or trousers. Other social clubs like golf clubs, gyms etc are also more casual.

Athu-leisure clothing is the most popular fashion style among young people, with sweatpants for men and yoga pants for women.

I would say that in general people try to define themselves through clothing choices, more than use it to appeal to the opposite sex. Which is not to say people don't try to look attractive (they do) it's just more nuanced than trying to turn people into horn dogs

I’m not terribly familiar with what females in their teens and 20s are wearing now but I remember a lot more revealing clothing growing up. Starting from the mid-to-late 90s through the early Ohs, I thought it was more explicit than what (little) I am seeing these days. That said, I don’t hang around high schools or colleges, so I might not be the best observer.

The only thing I’ll say is leggings and yoga pants are far more common now which I guess do show off a woman’s butt more than in the past. But that’s just fashion. Used to be you showed off your butt in jeans, it’s just the fashion technology made it so you can show off your butt in lululemon yoga pants now which are a bit more form fitting.

But I really don’t notice an uptick in sexier clothing.

I think there are two main reasons:

Women still want to dress sexy because they like the way they look. It makes them feel confident and happy. They aren’t always doing it to attract men or anyone else. Certain things about it may appeal to the male gaze, but that’s not why they’re doing it. As a woman, when I was at my lowest point, I mostly dressed in baggy clothes because I hated myself and I just wanted to disappear. When I gained self confidence, I realized that I could wear things that made me feel more me, some of those were crop tops and short-shorts.
Dressing more sexy is counterculture. Sure, the male gaze is attracted to women in skimpy outfits, but at the same time, those women were shunned for being sluts. Only women who wore modest clothes were respectable. For women to dress less and less sexy would mean that they were actually somewhat giving into the idea that women should “cover up” and “save it for their husbands”.

Secondly... There's very obviously a difference between women wearing what they're told and wearing what they choose.

Was revealing clothing on women in the past largely male-centric? Yes, but so was everything.

The reason women wear revealing clothes now is because they want to wear them, and if it attracts or pleases a guy they like then maybe that's a bonus but this idea that whatever women wear is always male-centric is outdated and tired.

The main thing I notice is that when I take my 4 year old daughter to the pool.... have the girls under 10 are wearing bikinis and thongs. Firstly your post contradicts itself- you seem to imply women used to dress slutty, but now all women dress casually, but then you round it back to clothing being “slutty” by saying women are wearing “skin tight pants”.

The only time I see women wearing “skin tight pants” are ones going for the athleisure look, and that’s paired with a baggy sweater, or hoodie. The most risqué that trend gets is with a sports bra. That’s not sexy. When I wear leggings in public, I’m usually going for comfort or I’m lazy.

Zoomer fashion trends involve baggy or flared high waisted jeans and a crop top. So scandalous to see a tiny bit of abdomen exposed.

Cottagecore is a huge trend right now for women under 30, most women are wearing simple, rather modest sundresses when outside.

I know it sounds repetitive and cliché.... but that voluntary hyper-sexualization by women is a subset of female hypergamy behavior in action.

In order to get the attention of the top 20% males, you have to either develop charismatic personality, have top 20% genetics... oooorrr they can take the easy route and signal their sexuality and leveraging their youth in hopes that the top 20% men would choose them. Of course they choose them... for hookups, to be their side chick, their short term partners, FWB's, etc.

The end result is intense competition from women, one-upmanship between each other to the point of absurdity.

Women create these dual morality conundrum and propagate it with their sexualized clothing. They want the (correct) men to notice them, but also at the same time NOT want the rest of the men to not even acknowledge their revealing clothing. In fact, you are now a "creep" or "weirdo" for even looking at what they reveal to the public.

I work for a university and I know the hot college girl look all too well. I understand the simplicity and comfort of spandex. But at the same I can't help but think since a lot of people meet their significant other during college that it's a bit of competition between women to be more attractive.

Side note but relevant is a conversation I overheard by a group of college women. They were talking about how little they ate that day. It was shocking how normalized for them to eat so little was. As a man I wanted to tell them that they didn't have to be stick thin to be attractive to men.

I think I notice it most with leggings and tights. It used to be women wore jeans and pants. Then leggings came along and now they put a special seam so each ass cheek is accentuated.

When I was working an office job I had to take a lady colleague aside and tell her if I can see the cut of her underwear through her pants then those pants are too tight and sheer and not professional.

I think part of this trend of more shape revealing clothing is driven by advances in textiles and synthetic fabrics.

Acceptable clothing has increased in variety since the era when all clothing was hand stitched from hand woven textiles. This is due in large part to the fast fashion industry attempting to drum up more different reasons to dress in different ways. So yes you are going to find more women dressed in skimpy clothes. And more women dressed in oversized everything and you can't see their shape. And all things in between.

I own over 200 separate pieces of outer wear garments and I am by no means wealthy. My grandmother owned maybe twenty items at my age. Her grandmother probably owned three dresses and a bunch of white aprons to keep them clean.

Of course I am more likely to own a sexy piece of clothing than my ma or grandma or great grandma. That's because I don't have to wear it as part of regular rotation unless I am really feeling it that day. I am also more likely to own whimsical items, items specifically for certain activities, items bought for a specific event.

The days of there being one acceptable silhouette, one acceptable level of coverage and it changing about once a decade are over. The economy moved on from that.

Its called freedom. In the past, there were different standards and more shame in the country, but huge cities just have a completely different 'shame dynamic' from small towns, and the new dynamic is much more liberal, so as we urbanized the shame went down, and we can be free of the tisk tiskers that have a much larger circle to gossip in in a city, so it rarely gets back to the victim. The decline of participation in organized religion probably also played a role, as this part of the patriarchy did have an outsized influence on sexual standards of behavior. I'm not sure if progressivism is a driving force, but also the standards have just shifted across the board, with even the most conservative people somewhat more accepting of personal appearance, because we are all swept along by the culture, and this is the way it is moving, to a more freedom orientation, and I am fine with that, up to a point.

Well, it's summer in the US and other places, and well, women are people, and people like to be desired.

It's not like you can dress in only one style. I dress fairly conservative for work but I love crop tops and miniskirts because they look real good on me. I also really enjoy the power/attention it commands from some men. It's not as crazy as some men might think, but people do treat you way nicer if you look feminine and a little racy. There's a way to balance it so it looked tasteful. There's a whole aesthetic spectrum that runs from "nun" to "wh*re".

It's not that I care if they think I'm sexy or that I want sex, but that I enjoy being treated nicer. People are more polite. They compliment you. The tiny, positive interactions, ime, outnumber the negative ones. Who cares if a mormon glares at your shoulders?

If getting nicer treatment is as simple as showing off the abs I work very hard for, and wearing a bit of eyeliner, fuck it. It doesn't mean I'm not dressing plain, conservative, or outright tomboyish/masc in other settings. Depends on what my goal is.

Fashion is all about expression and utility; you can use it to show who you are AND to influence how others perceive you. It's not like you're a cartoon character stuck in one outfit forever.

In the 1960’s my mom generally wore things like this and note the child because I WAS that child, wearing a bikini that covered literally nothing as a toddler. If I wore the top at all, there was no difference between girls and boys until someone grew breasts so we pretty much went to the beach in our underwear, like 2-3 generations of little girls before us, because we didn’t have all this sexualizing children crap you see in the media today.

In the 1950’s it was common to put ultra short dresses on children and was considered extremely cute. Put a mini skirt on a kid today, and you’ll get roasted over a spit.

My great grandparents growing up in Italy routinely attended nude beaches with their families.

But maybe you’re talking about the 1920s when women were NOPE you can’t possibly be talking about the 1920s

A lot of women feel empowered by “slutty clothes” because they make it hard for people to look at them let alone interact with them. Others are proud of some kind of hard work. They want to show off their boob job or their abs…same as a guy in a muscle shirt wanting to show off his jacked biceps.

Some of us are just…tall. My “slutty clothes” are formed by the cruel intersection of adorable skirt and me being too tall to wear the adorable skirt. As a teenager, this was 100% of the problem. Every time I bought new clothes, I grew, and they were smaller. In the poor families that create ultra skinny girls in “slutty clothes”….they sometimes just haven’t gotten new clothes since they were 12.

Also what even are slutty clothes? I love fashion and it would be so weird to look at a piece and go “naw that’s slutty”. I feel like “sluttiness” is literally based on beauty and body type. Some girls can wear any damned thing and never get dress coded. Other girls get dress coded for wearing a floor length shapeless dress if their bra strap is showing, make it make sense.

Also also, because I am not attracted to most women, they can walk around naked and I won’t care. I think we should be talking about why mens clothing has gotten more and more sexy in my 42 years of life.

I mean when I was a kid guys were walking around dressed like actual clowns. Now you see all these guys in slim fit jeans, button downs buttoned way down, sexy haircuts, and those slim joggers…what is wrong with men and society? My vagina is trying to retire!

Sex is a source of power for women (anyone really but especially pretty women). Clothing is the primary mechanism of exercising that power. Progress means empowering women to exercise their god given power. Before, men would jealously oppress this aspect of women's power for good reason, as it specifically exploits men. Progress is letting the individual realize the extent of their own power... regardless of what society has to say about it.

I agree and also a lot of women’s clothing just looks cheaply made and sheer these days even if it’s not a garment meant to look sexy. Just regular tops.

I was at the beach the other week and 90% of the women/girls under 40 were wearing tiny thong bikinis when it wasn’t that common 5-10 years ago. I think that since big booties and curves are “trendy” these days it also plays a part in making clothes seem more revealing. I’m also seeing so many more obvious BBLs.
