"Nice guys finish last" has two different common applications. One is that people who play fairly will lose to people willing to cheat, and in this world most people are more than fine playing a bit dirty so anyone who refuses to is putting themselves at a disadvantage. This is a non gendered saying, though it defaults to masculine due to the culture at the time and because guys are more likely to be actively and blatantly competing.
The other meaning is that women do not find "niceness" nearly as attractive as aggression or "roguishness". This is an inherently gendered meaning, because it refers to a gendered issue that is not equal or equivalent for both sides.

It's not popular, because it's not true. Female virtue is highly valued by men. Men want nice, pleasant, and agreeable women, so women who are nice are going to do well for themselves. On the other hand, women do not want these traits out of men, and it's in fact, repulsive to them. Thus, nice guys will quite literally finish last.

Women want a guy that is not afraid to get his hands dirty. If he's got to beat someone up, and steal their food to feed the family to survive, then she expects him to do it.

Men actively prefer nice girls, especially if they're physically attractive, on the younger side, and don't have too much baggage.

Some men literally fly halfway around the world to get women. You can pay a prostitute to fuck you in the West any day of the week if you feel like it, whether it is legal or not. And it will cost a lot less than a flight to the Philippines or Colombia or Thailand. But I think some men fly to other countries because the women there are nicer to them.

Women, on the other hand, actively choose men who are abusive assholes. You'd never see a woman flying overseas to find nice men.

For example, there's a case in the US where an on-duty cop was caught cheating on his wife with his mistress in his squad car while. This cop had previously gotten into trouble for beating up a 3 year old child.

The expression comes from needing to play dirty to compete at things. It isn't about gender dynamics. It applies equally to women in its original context, it is just that women weren't competing for that much back then.

But for another perspective, in some ways a lot of feminism was women basically saying this to themselves. Women are typically more agreeable than men and more sensitive and prone to negative emotions, all useful traits for raising children and existing in somewhat dimorphic opposition to what is typical for men. However, instead of leaning into the gender polarity and complementarity, a lot of women decided that whatever one's personality profile, Dad's life was better than Mom's. They wanted Dad's, not Mom's.

Essentially, many women decided that leaning into the more female typical Big 5 personality traits like agreeableness (being 'nice') gets you nowhere. It's too dangerous. Men abuse you. You don't do well on your own in the market. So fuck it. Women are gonna not be nice because that finishes last; instead they are going to lean away from their nature and into less agreeableness and so on. I don't know how I feel about this, ultimately. But there is a decent argument for having made this move.

Depends what you mean by “nice”.

Women who are nice but are people pleasers who struggle to assert themselves and set boundaries usually end up with people who take advantage of that.

You can be nice while having a backbone and not being afraid to cut off people who try to use you, but you won’t be perceived as “nice” by quite so many people.

Again though, being “nice” doesn’t entitle you to sex or a relationship it’s literally just the baseline of being a pleasant, functioning human - goes for both genders

The “nice girls” are usually referred to as pick me’s. Which I would say is a pretty popular term. If we’re talking about genuine nice guys compared to genuine nice girls, then I think the only way a genuine nice girl would finish last is by dating a guy who takes advantage of her kindness. But a more passive and kind woman isn’t going to be a big turn off to guys like a passive guy would be to many women.

The majority of people I work with are women, when I wave and say "see you tomorrow guys' I am not, not including the women.

Guys in English can means just a group of people or a person. It's rare to walk into.a room and says "hi gals" unless in my experience the room is full of gay men.

Competing with other men is a typical male thing to do. We make anything and everything a competition. Also, in the time the saying originated (and it's not a widespread saying btw. there is no equivalent in German for example, so it's not like this is an agreed upon, age old, knowledge about how fair play will put you at a disadvantage), women's role in society and what they actually did wasn't very competitive. So there was no application of the saying to the work space.

The saying really isn't about "niceguys". It's about fair play and cooperation. It's about game theory in essence. And it is absolutely unnessecary to make a specific female version out of it. It's not meant for a dating context, it's not meant for a gendered context at all.

Because for women, getting a partner is not a competition. It's not about who finish last, but who comes at them. While for men it is a competition. Anyway, the pick me, emotionally unstable and the immature women are the female nice guys.
