I can't believe how academics behave these days. You have to use reliable source and that doesn't mean articles in some magazines or blogs. But peer reviewed papers that have been published in academic journals. And you cannot cherry pick data. You have to either pick all available resources or randomly selected papers (say for e.g. if total number of papers is way too large and it's not practical to go through all of them). You're not allowed to discard a study just because you don't like the results.

I have a new poster up at work that talks about empowering women in the work place. There's a checklist of what I should be checking on myself to make sure I'm not doing. One of the items on the list was "Are you setting higher expectations for women than men?" Never once in 15 years have I worked in a place that has higher expectations for women than men, no manager, no boss, no fellow employees. It's like 10% we are treated equal, 90% men are expected to just do extra stuff because we are the workers. 15 lb boxes? Too heavy for a lady to put away. They don't want to clean the bathroom or sweep? Have the guys do it.

I've seen women work harder than male co-workers, but higher expectations? What world are these people living in.

Hey that's actually at my university!

I watched an interview she did with Andywarski and her sister is a Ryerson student, which is where I go for New Media. Honestly I'm not surprised in the slightest considering that is one of the hotter topics around here. People bring it up all the time and I cringe internally every single time, but I always keep my mouth shut about it.

One thing I will say though is this: the majority of us are normal people who sympathize heavily with men's rights (hell when our men's rights group got dismantled everyone really started hating our student union) and just want to make it through our university careers.

The reason that our school is the worst of the Toronto universities in terms of socjus bullshit is entirely because the people in power want it to be that way. Professors, administration, and most importantly our student union do not give a fuck about what kind of environment they are creating and it's caused this place a lot of grief. In fact we almost changed our name, a name that has survived through changing from a college, polytechnic institute and now a university because Egerton Ryerson was "problematic" by today's standards.

Most people do not have a very good understanding of statistics and how to peer review and effectively be critical of studies. I have used government sourced census data to valid the "wage gap", then disprove the argument that women make less for the same job. Yes anecdotes exist to prove both sides but at the end of the day people cling to the big easy number and ignore the stats that would make for a real discussion about real issues.

I had one really feminist teacher in high school who was actually really good about this. There was one conservative in my class, and she would intentionally try and get their opinion (mine as well as a radical alt centrist^tm . Also, though she went to the women's march I remember her complaining about it, she said she really disliked how many people brought their kids and had their kids holding signs, saying it was wrong to get one's children involved in one's politics. She had two kids. Not the best teacher, tbh, but she was really nice and principled.

It’s really sad how one sided higher education is in my country anyways. It’s almost impossible to get an unbiased education whether it’s left leaning or right. Let me put this myth to rest using logic. First, we have to agree businesses want to make money as their primary goal. So if that is true, lets then assume the price gap is real. A business can pay an employee 15-25% less because they are female, thus saving 15-25% in payroll expenses. So if the gap is real, the only logical conclusion, since businesses hire men, is that women do inferior work compared to men. So either the gap is not real, or women do inferior work...only one truth can exist.

Devils advocate: this seems like a setup. What question is the professor responding to in her email? It seems as though the student wrote the professor because she was running into a problem with something (the response implies that it had to do with finding sources on the wage gap, or lack thereof).

If the initial email was written as “I’m having trouble finding sources that support my premise that the wage gap is a myth,” the professor’s reply seems fairly standard. “You’re having trouble because it’s not a myth, but you’ll see it referred to more as the glass ceiling, especially in these feminist works.”

I don’t know, this whole thing seems benign.

What's interesting is the professor's premise that the pay gap works through the 'glass ceiling'. That concept, by definition, only applies to executives in a company.

So the professor is unintentionally noting that very little of the pay gap applies to the majority of people.

Of course, if confronted with this information, there would probably be another reason given. And if confronted with the contradiction, she would apply that the rules of logic are masculine, and therefore do not apply to feminist theory.

I imagine the professor made clear the sources that were to be studied. A good professor would further encourage thoughtful critique of those sources. Whether or not this is a good professor, and assuming that smart students should be smart enough to make up their own minds about what they read, refusing to read the suggested feminist works in a feminist sociology class makes no more sense than refusing to read about communism on principle in a class on Russian political thought.

When I was in college, I took a US history class from a very feminist professor. In the class, everything in history that a white male did was bad. If it was a woman, or a minority, it was a good thing. Her office had several hundred feminist books on her shelf. At the end of the semester, our final assignment was to write a multi-page paper about how the class made us think. I talked to her and told her I was more conservative than she was, and I would like to use my final paper to write a rebuttal to her class. Regardless of the topic, if a professor is starting from the position that a premise is categorically wrong and tells you to use only X sources and never Y sources, they are inherently biased and should not be a professional educator.

A proper approach to a student taking a position contrary to the professor's would be to address individual points with evidence that supports the professors position and counters the student's, and in turn give the student the opportunity to respond, creating a cycle of dialogue until the issue has been well examined from both sides. This is how academia works, not just parroting the opinions of self-declared "experts".

I study economics so I know there is a 4-5% unexplained earnings gap between the genders (UK government statistic) - which is not a far left thing to say; but the major difference is its not caused by the patriarchy. Its mostly maternity, as from ages 24-30 women out earn men in the UK but it flips from 32+ onwards.

Don't get me wrong, there is a pay gap when you look very closely at isolated professions (I've heard upwards of 7% in some fields) but it's nothing like the bullshit 25% that's been regurgitated constantly since the 70's.

There is however a relatively big earning gap but that has very little if almost nothing to do with what sexual equipment you have but the choices of career and what you actually do for a living. June said it best.

Not to break up the circlejerk too much, but for my Mechanical Engineering Undergrad, took a GE (I took it because it satisfied 3 different sections of the degree st the same time) called Women in Engineering. My final paper was on the wage gap and how it's made by choice rather than institutionalized. I not only got an A on that paper, but an A in the class with a professor comment mentioning that the paper was well cited. Also note that this professor taught 6 other classes, all "feminism" related.

My entire point being that these outlandishly moronic professors who say the shit in OP's post are definitely outliers, and most professors are not actually fucking psychos like this one.

This professor sounds awful, and dogmatic. That said, at the risk of (very likely) downvotes, I think folks on this subreddit need to look critically at their positions in order to avoid falling into the same mental traps.

The statement, "There is a gap in average pay between genders," is factually true. The statement, "In many industries, women earn less than their male peers," is also factually true.

This professor would no doubt contend that this delta is proof of systematic discrimination by patriarchal employers; this is easily falsifiable, because it isn't true. The gap is primarily explained by industry selection, hours worked and, over time, the decision to take time off or work more flexibly to care for children.

But the fact that the gap can be explained doesn't mean it isn't a problem. It's a problem for women, and it's a problem for men. Why are men more heavily penalized in the workplace for taking time off to raise their children than women? Why are men pushed into dangerous jobs? Why do we feel that it is acceptable to stigmatize male teachers and male nurses? Why are we ok with pegging a man's worth as a human being to his income?

The wage gap isn't a myth; the idea of systematic employer discrimination is a myth. The wage gap is real, and it's a problem.

There are many problems with academia, but some of the most fundamental is that with the expansion of sub disciplines, it it possible to study say for example English all the way to the PhD level without encountering the breadth of subject. Beowulf is avoidable. Chaucer is avoidable. Shakespeare, even, if one does some half-assed course on Aphra Behn's bullshit, is avoidable. In the fine arts, Pyramids to Picasso is avoidable. The classics are not mandated, nor is straight up factual, memorize the dates and locations versions of history. You cannot assume that every professor in the humanities has read Homer or Virgil or Ovid or the great works of philosophy. Or knows a damn thing about the War of 1812 or the development of the Hydrogen Bomb or collapse of the Soviet Union. Every possible general education course is now some silly over-specialized creature focusing on the value of women's labor in the 18th century or contemporary lesbian political art instead of broad surveys of the enlightenment or of 20th century arts in general. And specialization has spun out of control especially in departments that were conceived with a partial mission to avoid it. For example, you can talk to a Harvard grad of comparative literature and discover a profound lack of knowledge on basic world writers--do you know Voltaire? no. what about Joyce? no. Goethe? Schiller? Kafka? Mann? no. What about Melville? Gogol? Surely you've read Don Quixote or Great Expectations? no. The tremendous monuments of Western thought have been torn down from within the academy, leaving only shit and detritus behind. Half talents. We end up with a bunch of Greta Gerwigs and Jordan Peeles, shitting up a room of their betters merely because of their gender or race, feted regardless of their quantifiable lack of talent and context.

Degrees become rapidly more specialized. The narrowly educated BA takes a focused MA and then an even more focused PhD then spends another two years on a retardedly focused post-doc. You end up with a socially inept, distinctly unintellectual professor who not only has a tiny area of specialty but whom is literally unable to see the world from any other focus. It's pathetic and I've watched it happen since the 1980s.

You take this drive to overspecialization and add it to the sjw mindset--the distinctly McCarthyite mental disorder that drives us to bullied into signing loyalty oaths, group letters, petitions, and forces us to be policed by all manner of idiot--from over-privileged self-important students to terrified deans to power tripping sjw HR to narrow cabals of the tenured blue hairs. It sucks. The whole system is a guarantee that academia will have its head up its ass.

Can it be fixed? Can we return to 1950? Kill all the interdisciplinary departments. Go back to a great books and great men and rote memory General Education. Force people to have the sort of background knowledge that educated people should have. EG your required math is calculus I, your required English is the two-part Beowulf to Virginia Woolf survey, your required history is Western I and II, your required philosophy is Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, your required sciences are general biology, general chemistry and physics, and you have to take both macro and micro economics. No one ever is forced to take any of the social sciences. Once you've got those done, you can major in something.

Forbid MA and PhD and Post-docs from teaching anything other than surveys and freshman intros. Too many grad students get to teach niche courses based on their research. Asinine seminars that they see as a prize and which give them the erroneous idea that they will get to teach asinine seminars when they get hired.

Force all faculty to teach at least one freshman intro and one sophomore survey course every single term. And de-adjunctify. Hire only regular faculty who cannot simply bounce from job to job and who are invested in the institution. Adjuncts do not have to have loyalty to the system that so abuses them. It makes no sense to propagate this mess (read the headlines, for every Ward Churchill tenured type, there are five adjuncts doing the same idiot things and whining about it when they get not hired again). Won't that be more expensive? Absolutely. Slash enrollment. Raise standards. Make college more elitist in terms of required intellect. Merit-based scholarships only--if even that. Not every needs a university education. A college degree adds about $1 million dollars to your lifetime earnings. Perhaps a college degree should cost $250k. It should at least cost $100k.
