TL;DR: It's not really about Men vs Women or Sex vs Money. It's about where people fall on the spectrum of Romance and Materialism and how that manifest in choice and behavior.

For Romantics money introduces market logic into intimate life which is innately dehumanizing.

Sex between humans is natural and pure it will occur with or without the existence of money. Money is artificial and corrupting as it is arbitrarily distributed and has many variables that determine access to it.

Attraction belongs to a domain of human experience that is immediate, embodied, and non-calculative. Money belongs to an abstract system of survival and exchange. When attraction becomes dependent on money, it introduces calculation into a sphere that people intuitively experience as non-calculative, creating a sense of distortion or inauthenticity.

For example think about an early crush experienced when young. Money doesn't really enter the equation. Crushes were variable and were based on many unique factors that weren't particularly related to money. As people mature, attraction becomes increasingly filtered through material realities, which can narrow its range making things more artificial and calculated.

Real attraction is just vibes. Anything else is artificial and transactional. People can feel the difference between the two.

The best way to explain it is there exist a spectrum. Let's call it the romance-materialist spectrum. Romantics are all about raw attraction and compatibility. They see materialist attraction as repulsive. No matter how much money you give them they won't be able to stomach being with someone they're not attracted to. On the other end materialist don't really care about raw attraction or compatibility as much. They view relationships as transactional business or social decisions primarily. Calculating, mercenary. They don't feel attractions the way Romantics do. This allows them to enter relationships with people that are not as attractive to them to secure secondary benefits that are separate from the person themselves.

I wouldn't even say it is biased in gender. Some people are romantics and others are materialist. They have a fundamental disagreement on the nature of romantic relationships. This spectrum is not a problem on its own. The problem arises when romantics try to convince materialist and vice versa. Romantics see materialist as shallow and superficial while Materialists see romantics as naive and dumb.

You'll always be you. If you're in a relationship with a romantic and fall on hard times they'll stick around and help their partner rally. If you're in a relationship with a materialist and fall on hard times you're going to get discarded once the benefits dry up.

This dynamic is reflected in status loss for men and physical illness for women. Materialists discard their person/partner , Romantics are ride or die for their person/partner.

I have never done that, and so this is sort of an outsider view in a sense. From my view, if you are a guy, and you want sex (with anyone), and you only care about your own sexual gratification, then yes, that sounds depressing and hollow. And if women like sex, and want a mutually gratifying and satisfying experience, with some minimum of care, and this is what you provide, that seems subpar for those women (And for the guy, too, honestly).

Flip it around, if you are a woman, and you only care about lining your own pockets, regardless from whom - than that also sounds depressing and hollow. And if a guy wants mutually gratifying and satisfying experience, where you both have a minimum of care for each other, and this is all you provide, that seems subpar for those men (And for the women, too.)

I would say these actions are the same, both are stressful, hollow and lead to more restlessness. In these binary, 'men are masculine/women are feminine' scenarios, I imagine the healthy, fulfilling and the scenario to aspire to is the following

Women are receptive, open and welcoming towards men and what they bring - though selective in the sense that they want a mature man, and not a player or a brute. Someone who is capable and willing to put in the work, for them.

Men care for and treasure the woman, and find ways to give that makes her more relaxed, happy and content - they are selective for a mature woman, and dismisses a gold digger or someone who weaponizes emotions and attack him. Someone who speaks well of them in front of others, and in private, and who supports them when things get tough.

Both care for sexual gratification, and will work as a team to get it - but they will be different in many ways, and working together to make things better, is the hallmark of Loving someone, not 'feeling good'.

Honestly pursuing this only sex is seen as a fun, mutually pleasurable activity to men. On the other hand, there is no reason to honestly pursue only money. Even non-sexual escorts are expected to provide decent conversation or arm candy to a man who pays for it.

Thus, only asking for money is seen as worse than asking for only sex, the latter having a mutual benefit, the former having sole benefit only to the woman.

I think that the answer is that generally speaking when women seek these things, they are doing so in bad faith. In other words, they are pretending to be interested in sexual intimacy; a romantic relationship; etc. when in reality their main goal is free drinks; meals at nice restaurants, etc.

When men pursue women for sex, sometimes they do so in bad faith, e.g. by pretending to be interested in a long-term relationship, but that's not the general rule. And I think most men would agree that a man pursuing sex in bad faith is just as bad a a woman pursuing money in bad faith.

Nobody’s going to shed a tear about a woman getting a CEO to buy her champagne and caviar; I was pretty concerned hearing my friend covered a first date’s hotel room given his bad financial situation.

Also a bit curious how you’re seeing it play out with men seeming like it’s the worst thing in the world? When my woman friends get free drinks I cheers them, when someone I’ve never met asks if I want to buy them a drink 30s after meeting me I’m pretty put off by it. That’s only happened once but it was a pretty bad taste in my mouth, again similar to a guy trying to pick up a girl but I feel like it’s unanimously presumptive to go from 0 to “do what I want” so quickly.

Sex is supposed to be a mutually fun activity for both parties, and this is especially true in LTRs. However, a woman using a man for money is not a mutual, agreed-upon thing, at least when applied to dates and short-term flings.

In a LTR, a man would be more than happy using his money for his partner, but lets be real, it’s 2026, and the economy demands a 2-income household, especially because women are starting to out-earn men more and more, meaning the typical “Earner” man is becoming a dying breed. For the record OP, I had an ... eclectic social experience when I was younger and bounced between friend groups.

What you're describing is true for a certain subset of alcoholic, extraverted, low-FTO, festival and concert-going, generally low class, casual drug using men and women, many of whom end up having early pregancies or catching STDs or going to jail or suffering some other kind of predictable fate that befalls a person who goes through life with no morals, consideration for other human beings or standards of behavior generally.

For other friend groups I was a part of - more introverted, intellectual types who actually pause to think or give a shit about things like ethics on occasion - this type of blatantly objectifying manipulative behavior where you view yourself as a "hunter" of the opposite gender in some sense is much more rare. People with integrity and empathy generally want real relationships. Granted, they tend to be naive and easily fall pray to the sociopaths, and sociopath-adjacents in the first group, but over time they wise up and start to really reap the rewards of long term thinking.

This is not age-specific. The same mindless hedonistic degens I knew in my 20s are doing the same things in their 30s, 40s, etc. Now the party has migrated from EDM concerts and raves to more unc-core venues like cruises and running groups and overseas hostels, and everyone has baggage and kids... but ultimately it's the same old clusterfuck of hollow, materialistic, shallow pleasure-seeking with nary a speck of true human connection amid all the lies, posturing, cheating, occasional STD scares and substance abuse.

Well from a purely objective pov, it’s because money requires sacrifice. It’s effort and hours of your life, doing something you don’t want to do, somewhere you don’t want to be. And if you’re like me, I always hated the process of dating. I hate using my one day off to meet a stranger that may or may not like me (likely not) just so I can pay for the privilege of feeding them or whatever. Sex is literally just two people being intimate with one another. It requires literally nothing but willingness and attraction. That’s where it falls apart.

“Sex is a handshake”. I don’t remember where I first heard that. But it essentially means that both of you are reaping the rewards for sex. You will both in a general sense, be expected to enjoy that activity. Men don’t enjoy the act of throwing money at women. All that’s in it for them is the possibility of the mutually beneficial sex. See how that’s a bit lopsided? Stack that with the fact that most women aren’t going to sleep with you, that $5-$20 worth of drinks you bought was wasted and gets repeated over and over again. Most guys only complain about this exchange in dating, because in a good relationship, you’re getting a much better deal paying for everything.

All that’s to say, it is what it is. It’s never going to change. Guys that won’t play the game won’t be selected. They won’t pass that lesson of onto their kids because they won’t have any. It’s just one of those unfair things that we all know is unfair, and complain about it because it’s frustrating. It really isn’t that deep.

It's not bad as long as the women are also sleeping with the men that are paying for stuff. It only becomes bad if they string men along to pay for stuff and don't sleep with them. No one wants to pay for a woman to have dinner at a fancy restaurant or to go on a luxury vacation together just for the value of her company. Women tend to overestimate how much men value their personality and underestimate how much men value sex.

It also becomes an issue because usually men are expected to pay for stuff before the sex goes down. I personally have never really thought about this before, but these are two completely different acts. The pursuit of romance and sex is a powerful driver of personal development for men. It often requires them to overcome their own personal limitations (e.g. their fear of rejection, lack of confidence, etc). As a result, it's a life-affirming endeavor. Even when they fail, they at least fought for something.

Generally speaking, I don't think it's much of an accomplishment when a woman is receiving money and gifts from a man. I guess it sort of is in the situation you described, where the women are puppeteering men through subliminal messaging and social engineering. Is that actually what happens, though? Sex is something that's shared, money is exchanged. If someone has sex with me that would be incredible since it meant someone wanted to have sex with me. If someone in a relationship just cared about my money, then it's like having sex with me had negative value that needed to be made up for by something else.

More philosophically, sex is an experience that doesn't take anything from someone else. Someone's body is not "spent" or "wasted" or "ruined" by sex alone, not literally. Most men understand that money and sex correlate. Men typically want sex, and women typically want providing and security & money is a big part of that.

The things that get dicey is when the dynamics are unfair. Ofc everything needs to be consensual (ie no rape etc).

But gets unfair to demand more when both either bring the same or one brings more to the table in certain senses. For example if you both have an orgasm then that’s technically an equal exchange. If I’m rich and providing then of course you only giving me pussy is very much unequal, even if you risk having a baby. Your life would be made way easier by virtue of the man fucking you and getting you pregnant than otherwise.

Vise versa, it’s an unequal exchange if you risk pregnancy with a man and still have to provide equal or more than him in the relationship. (While contraceptives in modern era do help equalize things more, I will stick with raw biology).

Point is there are nuances in dynamics that get explored

Depends on what you mean by worse, but a man wanting sex from a woman is still objectively wanting her while wanting money from a man isn’t wanting him so in terms of being dehumanizing it is significantly and objectively less so.

And before you think that if a guy wanted sex from any woman makes it more dehumanizing, it doesn’t because it’s still wanting the woman just being less discriminate.
