So now gender and race/appearance determine the value of your opinion again?? Christ we're supposed to be moving forwards not backwards

[–]Skolvikesallday167 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (39 children) | Copy Link

The solution to racism isn't more racism in the opposite direction.

[–]perfectbluu-73 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Promoting diversity isn't racist

[–]duffkiligan60 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You’re right, I’m all for promoting it.

Forcing it, however, is wrong.

[–]GreatBayTemple-24 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I feel there should be inclusion in every level of business and office. I don't necessarily think it is racist. They want a diverse panel. Racism is a combination of fear and ignorance. Xenophobia and classism. They are leveling out earnings and opportunities to different backgrounds. That specific company doing that doesn't reflect the thousands of other companies that don't.

[–]perfectbluu-42 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I think your argument is based on the idea that all races and sexes are on equal footing in the tech industry. I disagree with this premise.

Blacks, hispanics, and women are horribly underrepresented in the tech industry. I support Google taking steps to include them because, statistically speaking, they wouldn't be included otherwise

[–]radicldreamer30 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Just because they aren’t there doesn’t mean it’s because they are automatically discriminated against.

Should we start saying white men are discriminated against in teaching or nursing just because there are more women? No, because less men choose this field and that’s fine. It’s also fine if blacks don’t want to go into tech for some reason.

They should have the same opportunity to go into it, but to almost force it is just dumb, whoever the best candidate is who should be picked for the job regardless of race, gender etc.

[–]Genrael13 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Actually part of why few men choose teaching, especially kindergarten, is because of discrimination and stigma.

[–]fonduman6 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

And we don't need to try to depend on the presumption that under-representation inherently implies such discrimination - we can point to tangible examples and policies.

[–]halloween__jack12 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Inequality does not equal inequity.

There are a number of factors that lead to white people being more prominent in certain industries, one of the more obvious being that they make up over 60% of the population.

Just because there are statistical disparities between groups does not mean there is discrimination going on. Trying to force diversity is just creating equality of outcome, which by nature eliminates equality of opportunity.

[–]perfectbluu-11 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The percent of hispanic and black students employed in the tech industry is far lower than the percent graduating with comp sci degrees.

Women make up 50% of the population but again are vastly underrepresented on executive boards.

Discrimination is still very real.

[–]BanSpeech10 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Are whites being discriminated against in the NFL and NBA when they are underrepresented in those sports? Do you believe the overrepresentation of Jews in banking and investment compared to whites and all other races is a coordinated effort of racism perpetrated by the Jews? Just curious on your opinion.

[–]perfectbluu2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I don't believe it's a coordinated effort in your examples, and I don't think it's a coordinated effort in the tech industry either.

I think the disparity we see is the result of larger social constructs, like a subconscious stigma against women and minorities. I think this move by google will definitely help.

I think a lot of people downvoting me feel personally attacked, but that isn't my intent at all. I don't think white men are conspiring against minorities.

I also think this title is strongly worded, and I think we would be having a different conversation with different wording

[–]JayBopara7 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

subconscious stigma against women and minorities.

The subconscious stigma we have against men in our modern society is far, far, far greater than the stigma against women. When it comes to minorities then yes, you may have a point - but I think that stigma is more conscious than subconscious. However, there may also be some subconsciousness at work from illogical people.

[–]BanSpeech4 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Also, follow-up question, if you don't mind (Im not trying to be pushy): Do you think the overrepresentation of Jews in banking and investment (and fortune 500 ceo positions) is a problem that requires a solution? Like the problem in tech?

[–]BanSpeech2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Thank you for the reply. My opinion on people downvoting you would be the concern that you support racial and gender discrimination. This sub is very against those things. In any form, regardless of rationalizations. I personally know you mean well. We just want to illustrate that discrimination should never a solution to any problem. History shows us how devastating that behavior can be.

[–]MisterUri5 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That’s just a bullshit bigotry of the gaps argument. Just because percentages of people in some domain of human activity don’t exactly match the demographics of the country, that doesn’t mean that you can just insert bigotry/discrimination as the cause. Apply that same flawed logic to the NBA and now there’s ‘evidence’ of racial discrimination against whites, Latinos, and Asians. Do you see how stupid that is?

[–]perfectbluu0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

With all due respect, I don't see the flaw in my logic.

Why shouldn't the hiring rates of blacks match the graduation rates of blacks with computer science degrees? Why shouldn't executive boards have equal gender representation?

I'm reluctant to comment on the NBA because I haven't researched it at all. I would be more than happy to read any links you send me.

[–]MisterUri6 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You don’t need to do research on the NBA. Blacks are massively over represented in the NBA. I used that as an example because it’s so obvious. The point is that just because some groups are under or over represented in some field that doesn’t mean discrimination is the cause.

I can think of few reasons off the top my head that would be good reasons why there would be less women on executive boards. Women work less hours on average than men. Women have more gaps in employment on average than men. Women are willing to commute shorter distances than men on average. Women on average value status and wealth more highly than men when selecting mates, so men have more pressure on them to acquire status and wealth than women do. Women also use more vacation time than men and value work/life balance more than men.

Executives at large companies work tons of hours and have to put their work before their home life in the vast majority of cases.

Basically what all this adds up to is less women are trying to reach top positions than men, because men and women have different preferences on average. Given your previous comments, it’s likely that you don’t believe that men and women have different preferences and dispositions on average, but they do, and there is an ever growing mountain of evidence that shows this. The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker is a good book that covers this topic and it cites a bunch of research.

I don’t know anything about the specific issue of there being less blacks in tech than there should be based on the number of black CS grads, maybe discrimination is a factor, but merely pointing out that there is gap in the numbers isn’t evidence of discrimination.

[–]Skolvikesallday1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

And whites are horribly underrepresented in the NBA. I think we should force the NBA to hire white people, regardless of how qualified they are for the job. America is what, 75% white? So 3 out of every 4 NBA players should be white.

Do you see how fucking retarded that sounds?

[–]morerokk41 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If "promoting diversity" means "excluding people based on the color of their skin", then you might just be a fucking racist.

[–]GreatBayTemple-40 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If the concern is excluding white men. For that to be true they would have to remove all white men from the panel right? They don't because they want a white male part of it. So its not racist. You guys shouldnt throw racism around so freely. They just want an employee of every race and sex at even percentages.

[–]morerokk40 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

They just want an employee of every race and sex at even percentages.

Right, so they are basing their choices heavily on the color of their skin. They are discriminating, on a basis of race.

Sounds like racism.

[–]GreatBayTemple-45 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]BanSpeech8 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Not a liberal, just a dumb fucking racist. Making up excuses for their racism by making up their own definition. Leftist assholes no longer represent the liberal values of peace, freedom, and equality. They now stand for the polar opposite.

[–]kellykebab26 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

A. Even percentages of races are not proportionate percentages of the total population of the U.S. Reducing white males on a panel of, say 10, to only 1 representative would unfairly and inaccurately represent the number of white men in this country by roughly 3.5x.

B. Many topics, especially technical or broadly philosophical, gain virtually nothing from the ethnic origins of the speakers. Why not also present a "diversity" of body types, fashion styles, hygiene, athleticism, or susceptibility to heart disease on a panel discussing hard problems in computer science? Because those characteristics are irrelevant to the topic. Just as ethnic origin or sex are.

[–]GreatBayTemple-9 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Sounds like you want to deflect from the issue. We're talking about the company itself. Even if we talked about the % of white males in the US that % would still be lower than what you presented. There would be white women present. Half the panel should be half female with your argument.

[–]Celda17 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Half the panel should be half female with your argument.

That assumes that the number of qualified people were half female.

Depending on the industry, that is far from true - some industries could be male-dominated where 80% of the qualified people were male.

[–]GreatBayTemple-2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Depending on the industry, that is far from true - some industries could be male-dominated where 80% of the qualified people were male.

That is true. Just leave empty seats until they find some. If diversity is something a company values until they find valid female candidates for the position.

[–]PM-ME-YOUR-DOGGOS10 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What if they are brunette? What about blonde? What about a rural upbringing or a city one? What if they were poor? Is there someone to represent a rich upbringing? That's the nonsense you are perpetuating and you can divide a group of people however you want and all that should matter is the individual. Stop forcing people to be in places for the sake of the image because the best people most capable for the job should be in that position not a process using a discriminating evaluation to show representation.

[–]kellykebab11 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I don't know what your first two sentences are referring to, but if you actually read my comment fully, you would see that my real argument is that race and sex are irrelevant to many topics for discussion.

Additionally, either your knowledge of U.S. demographics is inaccurate or your math skills are poor. Whites make up 76.9% of the total population, 61.3% if not counting Hispanics. Males are roughly 50% of any population. Therefore, the U.S. is 30-38% white males, depending on whether or not we include Hispanics. Source

1 white male out of 10 is 3.5x fewer than the proportionate amount of 3.5.

[–]GreatBayTemple-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Great so if 10 are on a panel we'll have 3 white males and a biracial male. Thanks for establishing the cap.

[–]kellykebab7 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You're welcome.

Again, my MAIN point is that pursuing even proportionally accurate ethnic diversity on every discussion panel is nonsensical.

[–]shakejimmy5 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

%s should be proportional to the selection pool at least if identity is going to become a factor in selection.

[–]rogue78026 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Prohibiting someone from doing something because of their race is in fact racism. The definition doesn't change just because the person being enjoined is white.

[–]nighttimesun4 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Then explain why diversity isn't enforced in non-white countries.

[–]RedSyringe2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Promoting diversity

That's just a dog whistle for fewer white men. We know it. You know it.

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Except when it is

[–]Saphiare 60 points61 points62 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nonono, it's that people of different races/genders are fundamentally different and so in order to have diversity of thought we must have diversity of appearance. After all, it's all about how you look - in fact studies have shown that you can tell everything about a person and their opinions just by looking at them!

/sarcasm so hard that I shouldn't even have to mention it, but after all this is reddit...

There is a huge over abundance of legal professionals in the US all desperate to make at least enough money to pay off their massive loans. Tech industries are easy targets because they have money, young and pliable clients, huge PR/marketing departments that are afraid of litigation, and a corporate business culture that encourages workers to succumb to authoritarian rules and actions without a fight.

[–]eclectro 38 points39 points40 points 8 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

but the tech industry didn't start it. Law firms did.

Because that's why Google fired James Damore?? That certainly wasn't some law firm.

This is just really a poor excuse for horrible and illegal behavior. It's the same argument that the alt-left makes to justify their violence. "If they just wouldn't say certain things, there'd be no violence"

Backwards is exactly right.

Edit: FTFA (emph. mine);

Not only did Google practice this discrimination itself, but it also attempted to use its power in the industry to coerce other companies into doing the same, with one manager instructing his employees as follows: Next time you get invited to speak at a conference, especially if you’re a white male – ask the organizer to confirm you’re the only white male on the panel / in the speaker lineup. If not, say you are honored, but must decline, and give the reason. And because you are at Google, guess what – they’re going to change the panel for you.

The cesspool that is Silicon Valley may have not started it, but they're certainly the ones propagating it everywhere. Google must be an awful hostile place to work at.

[–]Eraq 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s probably a great place if you’re part of the hive mind, operating completely on emotions and where anyone who disagreed with you gets shouted down or fired.

[–]cld8 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Because that's why Google fired James Damore?? That certainly wasn't some law firm.

It was likely due to concern about lawsuits from women and minorities working at Google. Their lawyers may have advised them that getting rid of him was the safest option.

[–]Mikeavelli 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The safest option would have been to negotiate his resignation coupled with a generous severance package in exchange for an agreement to not sue.

[–]cld8 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think he would go for that. His goal is to change the company's culture, not get money.

[–]BlackCrowRises 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I assume it started with juries, yeah? And sort of leaked into everything else having to do with the law?

[–]LoveEsq 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dude, you obviously aren't in law. Everyone is trying to figure out where this crap came from, but law firms didn't start it. It started when people tried to bs about the law to justify whatever business decision they decided to make thinking that contact with the law is enough to give a legal opinion. It isn't, so don't.

gender and race/appearance determine the value of your opinion

Literally says that nowhere. These aren't random people being pulled off the street and then assigned values for their random opinions based on race or gender. They are ALL professionals working in the same field. This is an attempt by Google, apparently, to foster a sense of diversity and to have their decision making driven from multiple social perspectives.

But go ahead, if Google is wrong, and simply create a better company that is more fair. If forcing diversity on the employees at Google is somehow wrong from a business perspective, then out compete them with your GI Joe team.

This is really more like

gender and race/appearance no longer help determine the value of your opinion in my favor

Edit: Sweet Irony, Batman. This place is a LITERAL circlejerk. None of you super smart guys has an argument? Just hit the 'cry like a girl' button?

[–]firelock_ny24 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

This is an attempt by Google, apparently, to foster a sense of diversity and to have their decision making driven from multiple social perspectives.

This isn't Google's decision making. This is presentations at conferences, a critical factor in developing one's professional status and recognition in the industry. Google is telling every white skinned male that they don't deserve any of this, no matter what professional contributions they're making.

[–]SilentKiller9624 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Well the thing is, Google isn't really forcing diversity in this case. They are trying to appear diverse... And at the cost of people's voices.

What they're doing is like skewing data. I.e. if you have a bag of candy and want to decide whether you're going to like it, the best way to do so is pick a few at random and see how you like those. If you only try the blue ones, you would have no basis on which to judge the green ones. If you only tried one green, the data size would be too small to guess how all the other green candies are. By picking at random, the representation they have in your "test" is proportional to their abundance in the bag.

Equivalently, if there are more white males in your company, they obviously span more positions. So by only having 1 white male speak, you're under representing the majority of the positions offered at the company.

The distribution of your data should match that of reality.

If Google wanted a more diverse team, they should should be looking at why the pool of developers seeking employment isn't more diverse, and look at how to fix that. My guess is that "minorities" aren't as motivated (by their environment) towards the technical field at a young age.

I don't see how any of that addresses what I said, even remotely.

Got it. You don't like Google's internal practices. Don't take their job offer when they hit you up (lol).

What they're doing is like skewing data

Like what? Give me an example of inaccurate data they have presented as factual.

So by only having 1 white male speak, you're under representing the majority of the positions offered at the company.

One, I disagree. Two, so what? Start your own company and beat them at their own game if they are fucking up in some meaningful way. They've only been around like 20 years. Give your business to other companies. Are you really demanding that they run their business a certain way? Are white men now going to cry for affirmative action?

"Our company only hires blonde white men. Don't like it? Feel free to apply elsewhere!"

See how retarded that is?

Well it isn't retarded. In television I stray away from shows that don't represent me. That follow the same rubric. Feel like white survival should be a movie category.

How many white super heroes are there before I'm in the theatre thinking. "White guy has the answer, white guy saves the day. Every minority died, but the white guy and his love interest lived. I didn't expect that ending!"

It's not salt as much as it's people of different races coming to the conclusion that we're all the same and we're in this together and it should better reflect that at the top to encourage cooperation.

I think it's crazy how for the past 100 years and more white dudes and white women had been completely represented, damn there over represented. Google is taking action to think farther on the future as oppose to the current to get ahead of a society that is very much becoming more integrated.

[–]morerokk11 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah, by forcing white people out. That's not the right way to do it.

Just give everyone equal opportunity, and it will even itself out. If you try to force an equal outcome, you only end up creating more sexism.

Are you forgetting that non-white people are minorities, and that in a fair world, they aren't represented 50/50?

People have equal opportunity now. The figures just haven't caught up yet.

Marvel and DC, they only this last decade have had more minorities. I'm a big movie buff. So I've seen the gradual shift.

[–]GreatBayTemple1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]martin598252 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Weirdly enough I just watch stuff - and have never thought to myself:

“Well that character would resonate with me, were they the right color. Better turn the channel.”

[–]GreatBayTemple0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I never really thought like that before either until I sat in a television class in which a professor explained how white audiences will not watch films with Chinese leads. He cited ghost in a shell. Saying if it wasn't Scarlette playing the main character no one would care. Films with all black casts tend to only attract black demographics. It just made me question what I purchase. I never really put much thought into it before.

[–]martin598252 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The professor doesn’t sound very smart.

Reads more like a Salon article.

[–]GreatBayTemple0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Well I mean, he's pretty big in television. He wasn't critiquing Hollywood, he understands marketing and advertising he just explained simply. White audiences rarely watch films with non white leads.

[–]martin598251 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

This kinda stuff becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and y’all should really be careful what you wish for.

[–]valenin2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]SilentKiller969 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Give me an example of inaccurate data they have presented as factual.

Anything presented by a panel where the speakers do not represent the company, is an inaccurate representation of the company.

Start your own company and beat them at their own game if they are fucking up in some meaningful way

Just because something is wrong, doesn't mean it's bad for business. For example, child labor is wrong, but good for business.

Yes, pandering to certain groups may be beneficial for their business at the moment. Good for them. One day, decades into the future, big companies will pander to other groups.

Sure, Google knows more than me. However, you'd prefer that I remain silent about my concerns? Hell, I'm sure your life would be much easier if everyone that didn't agree with you remained silent. Poor you.

Are you really demanding that they run their business a certain way?

No, nobody is demanding anything, we are just voicing our concerns. Except for the person at Google demanding that white people shut up... They are, indeed, making demands.

[–]Alx17753 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I like your answers in theory. “Just form another company and ....”

Problem is, we’re now in an enlightened world where discrimination against Caucasian (and sometimes Asian) males is practiced, promoted, institutionalized, and protected or even mandated by law.

Google can get away with this crap because of its market position, not because it’s a best business practice.

[–]Vandechoz1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It's not encouraged or mandated by law, or the lawsuit against Google wouldn't even be considered.

[–]ZyfeT16 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Google is telling people not to share their ideas based solely on their gender and race. If you can't make the connection from that to "value of your opinion" then there's no hope in getting you to understand that you're just as racist as any other, and you can enjoy your rightly deserved downvotes.

People are upset by the gross violation of principles that they value--by an established industry giant, no less--and they aren't actually interested in personally trying to out-compete said company. But I'm guessing you already knew that, so I have to wonder what the hell your point was.

This is really more like

gender and race/appearance no longer help determine the value of your opinion in my favor

Nobody is complaining about losing unearned privileges or whatever bullshit buzzphrase du jour. They're complaining about an explicitly racist and sexist policy that holds back individuals for no reason other than being born into the "wrong" demographic. And I suppose they're irked by the well-meaning idiots who defend bigotry in the name of "diversity."

[–]HereForTheDough-6 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I've worked with people at google.

Their system is modular and relies heavily on documentation and inter-team communication, which is coincidentally one of the ways an employee in OP got fired (posted his opinion on the public discussion board). Nothing at google would get done without documentation because teams are fragmented and each team dictate their own leadership. Only exception (that I've heard of anyway) is youtube, which no one at google wants to work for.

Can we also address the sheer arrogance that goes along with this discrimination?

Next time you get invited to speak at a conference, especially if you’re a white male – ask the organizer to confirm you’re the only white male on the panel / in the speaker lineup. If not, say you are honored, but must decline, and give the reason. And because you are at Google, guess what – they’re going to change the panel for you. You’ll feel bad about inconveniencing them. But not that bad. When the cheesy white male executive is in the “green room” and glaring at you because he was bounced for the panel in favor of a woman on his team, you’ll feel pretty damn smug. Or you won’t: you’ll feel bad that you might have put her in a tough spot, and you’ll go above and beyond to make good with the schmucky senior dude (Complaint 42).

WTF Google?! I mean, I get you're the biggest company in the world, but there's no need to be a dick about it?

[–]spaghetti335 39 points40 points41 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

First off, Google really shouldn't have people in higher positions that hold such absurd views.

Second, a person doesn't make such an opinion unless they're comfortable making it. Either they're not a wise person (unlikely given they're a manager at Google) or they know it's permissible in the Google work environment. (Something that Damore suggested)

[–]drbacon 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Can you tell how high the position is? I can't.

There are maybe ten thousand managers at Google. I assure you not all of them are wise.

[–]spaghetti335 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I didn't mean to suggest this guy was on a board or anything, but surely there's a difference between a bottom-level employee making such statements and a manager making them.

And more importantly, since it corroborates Damore's position, it supports the idea that this is a common belief.

[–]drbacon -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is arrogant. No doubt. It's even more nuts coming from someone in charge of at least one other employee.

It would take many more anecdotes than this to make me believe Google has a position of taking away opportunities from employees based on race or sex.

The federal NDP (Canada's left-wing party) requires that candidates for nomination be a member of an 'equity-seeking group'.

Gerry Taft (who is married to a woman) revealed that he is bisexual after facing questions over his eligibility in the aftermath of his victory over a woman with a disability.

[–]that_motorcycle_guy 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]spaghetti335 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not if they're straight, as I understand it. That's why Taft (mentioned above) was allowed through.

[–]spaghetti335 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The idea of a requirement to be of an "equity-seeking group" seemed so absurd I thought you were kidding. But no, it's just as absurd as I thought it might be.

And just to clarify for others, NDP isn't the left-wing party, but they are furthest left, followed by the Liberal Party.

This is actually far nastier than that. What this manager is saying is that if a conference wants to have a white male speaker from Google, they must get rid of all other white male speakers from every other company. It's transparently self-serving. This manager is trying to use Google's pull with conference organizers to sideline the competition.

[–]PlastIconoclastic8 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Maybe you didn’t read the article. Here is what they were riffing off. The premise is not much different. White males must ensure they are the only one to speak from their gender/sex combo, and make demands or decline speaking if it isn’t the case.

Quote from google manager:

“Next time you get invited to speak at a conference, especially if you’re a white male – ask the organizer to confirm you’re the only white male on the panel / in the speaker lineup. Or you won’t: you’ll feel bad that you might have put her in a tough spot, and you’ll go above and beyond to make good with the schmucky senior dude (Complaint 42).”

[–]i_dont_use_caps-12 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

google is telling its empoyees to ask about the panels they are being invited to.

nowhere anywhere does it say panel members are picked on race. the discussion isnt even about google hosted panels. these are about third party panels from any organization.

how do you not see these are two different things?

think about it this way.

you order an uber pool. Your wife tells you not to get into it if there are women in it.

the uber arrives and you ask who is in the car before you get in.

now did your wife have choose who else would be in the car?

google isnt choosing who is on the panels. but no one here is interested in a real conversation anyway. you guys just want to build straw men and cling to them

[–]PlastIconoclastic2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Anticaps, you are delusional. “Not picking who is on the panels” is not the issue. Managers are telling white men from google to assert a policy of excluding all other white men from all panels. No other people of any ethnicity or gender are told to set these aggressive and disruptive conditions on their participation. That is discrimination. Treating white people differently is not allowed in the same way that treating any other ethnicity, gender, religious group, or sexual orientation is discrimination.

[–]PlastIconoclastic2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What if they told black people not to speak at cultural events that were majority black? What if Google employees who are homosexual were told not to speak at a LGBTQ+ event unless there were also heterosexual perspectives represented? People should not be prevented from associating or have unusual conditions placed on their public image related directly to immutable differences.

What does this mean?

[–]Bed-Stuy 22 points23 points24 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It means that some people expect equal pay while delegating their responsibilities to those who are actually capable of performing them. It happens all the time in the workplace and I'm sure you yourself have had to do someone else's job before.

[–]slugsnot 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

How about : we give jobs based on merit.

I agree with this. I am a proponent of mens rights. But I also believe in Affirmative Action for the simple fact that it does ensure people are being chosen based on merit.

[–]GeneralDogsbody 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How does it ensure this?

[–]slugsnot 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

The premise of affirmative action is this:

That all things being equal, discrimination still exists. Two people with identical resumes, equal people skills, and equal everything, where the only difference is skin color and gender - those external factors play a role.

So if you accept that premise, that unconscious bias exists (and proponents of AA do have convincing research on this), then the natural question is this: What tools do we have available to combat this persistent bug in our system?

It doesn't really work to come after individual companies when we see that some 100+ staff are all white males because then you get these horribly awkward moments like this. Obviously, every company on earth will simply say "we don't discriminate" and to be fair, they don't... at least not consciously. So you can't even really pin it on them, and if you could, would they really deserve it?

So the idea is this... AA says that we can look at the statistics, and empowered by mathematics, make more progressive decisions. Given your companies location, your employee's skillset, the available workers in your region, all things considered, IF unconscious bias were not a factor, then how would your company look demographically?

Obviously AA is difficult to design and enforce, so it's usually an opt-in program. If your company wants to claim that they are an equal opportunity employer, one such piece of evidence they can put forward, is compliance with some affirmative action type of remedy.

So that's why affirmative action is a merit based system.

It was created by John F. Kennedy so that blacks and minorities could gain access to promotions, pay increases, admission to schools, and financial aid. Basically, it was saying "hey, we are unconsciously (or silently) still enslaving people - so let's force the bigoted assholes to change their behaviors". At that time it was not optional, and could very well be why he was assassinated. It was probably his #1 least popular policy in Texas.

So I still believe in the principle that race, creed, gender etc. shouldn't play a part in the hiring process, and I can't think of a more sincere solution than letting statistics enforce moral intentions. I think at the end of the day we are all flawed creatures, and math is the only tool we have which is truly blind to bias.

[–]GeneralDogsbody 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Okay, that's the 'premise' how do you think it plays out in reality?

[–]slugsnot 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Historically AA was deemed semi-successful in retrospect.

Progress is slow. The EEOC still has an uphill battle - but things are much better off now than when AA was used.

In fact, I read recently that being a woman increases your chances of getting hired by 48%!

https://talent.works/blog/2018/01/08/the-science-of-the-job-search-part-i-13-data-backed-ways-to-win/

These people don't think about individuals, only about arbitrarily defined groups.

A sacrifice of an individual means nothing to them as long as it benefits their preferred group.

This thinking is doubly-harmful. You don't hire groups, you hire individuals. To ask the individuals you've hired to sacrifice of themselves hurts the employer as well as the individual.

I've been watching all along. I though the situation about racism would dissolve away and people would realise, but no, but it keeps coming back ,getting more stupid by the day.

I really like that people are trying to be diverse and not racist, but that should natural, as we humans are naturally not born racist. Everything now feels artificial as it feels enforced.

Companies hiring certain "types" of people cause they have a certain race or sexuality just to puff up their diversity points. And then they discriminate against another particular type, because that was the norm.. utter hypocrisy. I'd say just employ the best person for the job.

But then don't discriminate against anyone cause they fit a stereotype. That's becoming what they want to avoid.

[–]GeneralDogsbody 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

as we humans are naturally not born racist.

Can you back that up with a citation?

There's a distinct evolutionary advantage to being wary of 'others' in terms of 'tribe', or 'race' -- disease, war, survival, in general, were all things to be wary of in terms of evolutionary survival.

If anything it is human nature to be wary of 'those that are not like us'

You can still buy a phone from an Android OEM, remove as much of Google's ecosystem as possible and install 3rd party app stores (Amazon, F-Droid, etc.) If you buy an iPhone you're paying Apple probably close to 100% since they make the hardware, the OS, and they own the App Store. You have much fewer options to divest from their ecosystem without a lot of extra effort (jailbreaking and whatnot).

[–]Blimey85 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Any evidence of Apple doing anything like this? I’m quite curious if this is across a lot of tech firms or just at Google. Would be odd if it was just one company but I’m hoping this isn’t a widespread trend among most tech companies.

where did this definition of open source come from? then GPL is closed source by that definition.

[–]Ayuzawa2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

This is correct, from it's wikipedia page

The text of the GPL is not itself under the GPL. The license's copyright disallows modification of the license. Copying and distributing the license is allowed since the GPL requires recipients to get "a copy of this License along with the Program".[66] According to the GPL FAQ, anyone can make a new license using a modified version of the GPL as long as he or she uses a different name for the license, does not mention "GNU", and removes the preamble, though the preamble can be used in a modified license if permission to use it is obtained from the Free Software Foundation (FSF).[67]

[–]choikwa2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I mean even software under GPL is only required to distribute source with binary, not allow people to participate in development.

And then there's Android. You can get a Tizen powered phone (it's an OS currently being developed by Samsung, not enough flagships use it yet) or get an iPhone.

Samsung trying to go the way of Nokia and palm pre?

[–]Arcosim 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No, that's a gross oversimplification. Tizen is Linux based, most Android apps can be recompiled to work in Tizen with just a little bit of work. Also you don't even need that since most Android apps can run on Tizen thanks to Tizen's ACL (Android Compatibility Layer) with almost no performance impact. All Samsung needs to do is perfect it, make it bit better and then make a deal with other South Korean phone makers like LG and also Chinese phone makers like HTC, OnePlus, Huawei and Xiaomi and Android will lose 80% to 90% of its marketshare in the blink of an eye. The deal with South Korean and Chinese phone makers is very likely, since all Asian phone makers had problems with Google and specially Google Play in the past.

[–]AmericaNeedsBernie 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Vivaldi for browser.

Mozilla pushes a progressive agenda as well. Switching to Firefox from Chrome is just rearranging chairs, even when ignoring how much more performant Vivaldi is

ZohoMail for E-mail

You can sync all email out of gmail into another email account with imap sync. You will have to turn off 2 factor auth on both sides first. Do delete all messages stored in gmail when you're done, Google has no right to that information.

DuckDuckGo as default search everywhere

PCloud for online storage.

You can’t retroactively make females decide to take up the field of computer science and become subject matter experts in that field by manipulating speaker lineups today.

[–]sfdud6 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

At this point I’m ready to give up conferences. In their quest for diversity they’ve lost sight of the point of arranging them in the first place.

[–]skintwo-16 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You can absolutely help influence the current and future ones. Geez.

[–]otter111a13 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I guess it depends on the conference. If it’s a bs conference with a lot of kids at it then have at it. But professional and academic conferences are held for people in a field or studying to enter a field at an advanced level. I go to a lot of them and there aren’t kids looking for inspiration at conferences.

[–]skintwo-6 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It's not just kids they need it. Folks at all levels need to break themselves out of their current network loops and think about how to make things better. As a manager it's good to see this - as a SVP even better.

[–]otter111a14 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

As an engineer in a highly specific field there aren’t a lot of people in general who decided to go into this field. You can’t just waive a wand a generate subject matter experts all fields.

[–]skintwo-2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Of course not. But you can get off your ass and try. As a woman in probably the most male-centric field there is, who has seen my peers leave because they were treated like /shit/, there is a real problem here. If you're not /like/ someone, it's very easy for them to overlook you when putting something like this together. That natural tendency really needs to be overcome. And I have sat my way through plenty of SHIT presentations/content/speakers because someone was a friend of a friend and, let's just say, not diverse at all.

EDIT: So even saying you should try gets me downvotes?? So, anything other than /guaranteeing/ white, male speakers even at the expense of quality is not OK with you folks? Crazy shit.

[–]otter111a6 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

But you can get off your ass and try.

Try what exactly? That's a nice platitude but it really isn't giving a valid path forward.

A google engineer is likely to be a recognized expert in a highly specialized field within their area of study. People probably want to hear what they have to say irrespective of their gender.

So the neutral tendency is to have the most qualified speaker there.

If you want these female attendees to learn to be the best they are going to have to request speakers based on who brings the most value to the podium not who coddles them.

Sorry, but the technical world isn't like the business world. Not every area of specialization has people in them that are 6 of one half dozen of the other but for their gender.

[–]JoeWim11 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The majority of professional conferences are pay to attend, and the reason that people/companies pay is to gain knowledge and insight for their staff professionally. If a company spends money to send their team to a computer science conference then they expect to get their moneys worth, i.e. the best of the best in terms of speakers and content. No one is spending money on a computer science etc. conference to learn about diversity in the work place, if they wanted to do that then they would attend an entirely different event. It's not fair (or ethical in my opinion) to intentionally choose someone to lecture based off of their race and sexuality, rather than their experience.

[–]skintwo-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It's not fair or ethical to not even TRY to consider it when putting panels together, though. You end up having lazy bro-culture where like promotes like - only. A natural human trait. I agree about the quality of speakers. And maybe it's a hard thing to try and get those high quality diverse speakers to add to your non diverse speakers. it is worth a freaking try. It's goddamn lazy not to, and it means you AREN'T getting the /best/ speakers, because you didn't go beyond you own first neighbor network loops.

[–]JoeWim4 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I just don't believe a line up of speakers at a professional event should be intentionally made to be diverse if it jeopardizes the quality of the program. Sure, if there are 100 qualified speakers then look for diversity when picking the lineup, but quality of content is what should be considered first.

Whoever is in charge needs to look at qualification regardless of gender/race and pick out who needs to be there and who doesn't, it's that simple. Right now, this is how it's done and once they send out invitations (to the most qualified people) then it's totally unprofessional and unethical for google to deliberately censor someones opinion. Just because they're a white man doesn't make this okay. It's ridiculous that Google does this on the off chance that an educational conference has anything in mind but sharing the knowledge of the best and brightest in a field.

[–]Milkshake_Snail3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Although I agree with you that making a more inclusive field might draw more women, this is absolutely not the right way to do it. I would suggest more education on a grade school level on tech businesses, which will help everyone.

[–]skintwo0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I agree that REQUIRING "false" diversity isn't helpful, at all. I do think that requiring someone to at least TRY to go outside their existing networks is useful. Sometimes finding us isn't the easiest thing, but when I had a guy once ask me - truly befuddled- about how he could possibly find a woman to speak in a panel that I would have been perfect for, I roll my eyes. We're so invisible when guys are thinking of who to ask, and that "invisibility" is a really subtle thing.

I've put panels together, and it is honestly hard to reach outside those you already know to build more diversity. It can be done, but requires more effort. That effort is worth trying. Forcing a quota isn't an acceptable solution. Having to prove how you TRIED to make it more balanced is. And maybe going that process will help everyone trying to do these things.

[–]boxsterguy2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It won't go away until we demilitarize the police. There's no reason that a first response should ever be a SWAT team, but we've got police departments high on military surplus and drooling to use their new tanks, so ...

[–]Vandechoz1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Or we could really militarize the police and give them the training that our soldiers use when doing sweeps in terrorist-ridden locations that keep things like that from happening.

[–]boxsterguy1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That seems like a terrible idea. The police are not supposed to be a militarized force, and transitioning from a peace keeping service to a military service is a significant change with wider spread impact than simply, "If we're going to give them military weapons, we should teach them how to use them."

We shouldn't be giving police military weapons in the first place.

[–]Vandechoz2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

don't let perfect be the enemy of good

I don't think there's enough political will to disarm the police, while I think there is enough to potentially get them better training.

[–]boxsterguy1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Demilitarize != disarm. Police should absolutely have sidearms, shotguns, even snipers in some areas (makes some sense in a large city, probably not in a rural area). I'm not even anti-SWAT. All I'm saying is that "Let's send a SWAT raid" probably shouldn't be the first response to anything. Somebody called in a threat? Send a couple uniformed officers with tasers and sidearms, and have backup ready to go if they confirm a credible threat that requires tactical force that only SWAT can provide.

Right now, we've got police departments across the country getting ridiculous amounts of military surplus, and then itching for any chance they can find to use it. That creates a dangerous situation, regardless of training.

[–]Vandechoz1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

sure, whatever, again I think you can promote both solutions and hope for the best

[–]boxsterguy1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If you're going to give military shit to police, then yes, absolutely, train them to use it properly and not to see every problem thereafter as a nail to be hammered by the military surplus tanks and stuff.

But it would be much, much better to stop militarizing the police in the first place.

you're missing the point. it's not a race issue, it's a economics issue. by blaming everything on gender and race identity the left play right into and contributes to the divide and rule tactic of the elite and therefore enables a continuation and increase of inequality.

their lack of understanding that it's not "the cis white male" that oppress them but a bunch of oligarchs leads to misdirected hate, which in turn is naturally perceived as unprovoked and unjust, thus leading to a reaction of hate and anger towards the attacking group.

[–]LasherDeviance-11 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I get it. And I got DV'ed for saying that the guy shouldn't feel guilty, but he should take it up with the people and institutions that created the circumstances that partially led to his life being shitty. Don't take the gun to yourself, that's just stupid.

I say partially because its on us as men to make the most of our lives with what we have. If this guy made it to 40, with no trade or education at all, wherein he's relegated to working at Wal-Mart for pennies, that's his own fault. He literally had 22 years as and adult to improve his life and circumstances.

[–]gats8610 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's strike two on missing the point. I'll spell it out for you. When your life is less than spectacular and your told to just get over it because your skin color awards you special privilage and then to top that off your blamed for all other racial problems as a contributor just because you exist and your constantly excluded both emotionally and physically from the discussion because of your skin color you tend to take it out on the people that keep instigating you.

Now losing your job or not setting yourself properly in life or just having a shitty life? Yeah that's just life. Having groups of people discriminate against you racially and constantly instigating you outside of your influence? No, that's some racist shit others shouldn't have to deal with.

[–]chaun22 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

And then you find the icing on the cake, that shows conclusive proof that because of your sex, and possibly skin, you may have been excluded from higher education, because you consistently got worse grades for the same work. Then you find yorself at a place where you have to ask yourself if your life was because of your poor choices, bad luck, or actually being told from the beginning "you have a better chance" while being actively prevented from having a chance.

[–]RacelessSexlessName1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Difficult to determine whether to downvote you or not. That's the same style of argument about the wage gap and black people not getting better education... but it's actually used against men in educational institutions since they've all been feminized and expect feminine behaviours over male ones. If you act like a boy, you're bad, if you act like a girl, you're good.

Slippery slope of truth vs shit talking...

That's the point I was making. Much of the research shows that we consistently get lower grades in school, despite outperforming girls in certain subjects

[–]LasherDeviance-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's strike two on missing the point. I'll spell it out for you.

I didn't miss the point, I just made a different one.

You literally just described the life of a black man. It goes both ways.

Now losing your job or not setting yourself properly in life or just having a shitty life? Yeah that's just life.

True.

Having groups of people discriminate against you racially and constantly instigating you outside of your influence? No, that's some racist shit others shouldn't have to deal with.

As a black man, I agree. The point that I was making is that the OP problems weren't caused by non-whites. People making white men out to be a problem should be ignored. Google is stupid for it and it will be the cause of their demise.

[–]NSFWIssue-7 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You're a disgusting racist and that's pure evil. Go fuck yourself.

[–]LasherDeviance1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Fuck off. Nothing that I said was racist.

[–]NSFWIssue1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Racist and stupid, who would have guessed?

[–]LasherDeviance0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Neither buddy.

[–]elebrin 55 points56 points57 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The slightly dangerous part is the embittered attitudes and the willingness to accept actual racism and sexism. I guess I was right - demonize someone for being a racist or a sexist for low-level or nonexistent bullshit, and they will become what you are calling them but on a FAR deeper level.

Call a white dude a Natzi for making a Jewish joke he heard on Seinfeld once years ago, then do that a few hundred times, and he might actually decide he wants to hate Jews and go down that path hardcore and become an extremist in his views. Nobody really wants that.

[–]Hannyu 40 points41 points42 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Well the accepting part is because the movement isn't just a response to male issues, but white male issues in particular. It's what separates the alt right movement from the MRA movement. It has a lot of overlap because in the US white people still happen to be the largest race demographic by far.

But yes, call someone racist enough times and they won't give a fuck if they actually are racist anymore. For one the accusation loses any meaning or validity, and for two they've been dehumanized to the point that it wouldn't matter if it did.

Look at the studies done on prison environments, where people treated like prisoners started acting like prisoners, people treated like guards started acting with power and authority. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

[–]Alx1775 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hell, pop media figures say “cut taxes” = racism. The term is becoming meaningless, except as a cudgel to beat white people who disagree with liberals on anything.

[–]Zoenboen 27 points28 points29 points 8 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

Everyone likes this idea that white men are "fighting back" - that they are sick and tired of all this and that's why we have Nazis marching again. This isn't really what's happening. It makes sense on the surface, but it only explains the feelings of relative moderates who actually aren't marching yet.

For the Nazis, the fervent alt-right, they have been enabled by the identity politics people. This has crept into the left as some sort of method to reach understanding but it has made the most vocal, the most hurt, raise to the top.

Except those leaders are actually very authoritarian. We see this, we mock this even in the current thread because it's shutting down voices and opportunities in this case.

This enables people like the Nazis because it's signaled that this is not only okay, but it is the way things are to be. Not the content of your character, not your message, those things aren't important. It's okay to brand people and divide them. The next natural step for both sides is that it's okay to harm those that aren't "us". Then if they die, it's good for the cause. Then it's good to kill them, we should come up with easier ways to wipe them off the earth. Then Americans are storming the beaches of Normandy to save the world from such a menace... So who will save us?

[–]Kailu 24 points25 points26 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The left already thinks it’s okay to harm people on the right.

[–]the_leander 21 points22 points23 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yup, "punch a Nazi" after the footage of Richard Spencer getting clocked during a street interview came out.

And the Berkley riots and on and on. The far left has legitimised politically motivated violence and even gone so far as to proclaim it a moral duty.

Dangerous times.

[–]WideExemplification 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i mean.. if they were punching actual nazis it'd make sense. We fucking crippled germany and their allies and nuked them into submission because we don't tolerate world domination racism.

But what they call nazis are just people who might be slightly racist or just not whats considered left/liberal

[–]elebrin 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's older than that. The people laughing when GWB got a shoe thrown at him was atrocious. I mean I get it, it's funny and I'm one of the people who laughed so maybe I'm just as bad. Nobody deserves to have a shoe thrown at them though.

[–]Twistntie 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, they funded that NRA ad. Fuck, it's not about the other side. Keep your own dudes in check. That line you just used is exactly what's wrong on six levels. You just made it sound us vs them nonsense. Grow up.

[–]Hannyu 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Like I said elsewhere, I think the alt-right is an infant movement. It's associated with the hate movements because that's currently the outlet they have to have a voice, but I think it will grow and leave the hate groups behind as it matures.

Remember, the MRA is still fighting things like feminist propoganda to associate them with hate movements. It's going to be even harder for a movement that also has a racial component. These things take time. We'll see how it plays out.

[–]SunRaSquarePants-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I think this is a pretty ham-fisted analysis.

It's associated with the hate movements because that's currently the outlet they have to have a voice

If your movement gives voice to hate, it is a hate movement.

but I think it will grow and leave the hate groups behind as it matures.

By what mechanism??? The alt-right is founded on identity politics. The phrase was coined by self-identified white nationalist Richard Spencer.

It's going to be even harder for a movement that also has a racial component. These things take time. We'll see how it plays out.

Wow, you've missed the fucking point. No movement can have a race component without being about identity politics. Identity politics is actually what we are here to disavow. Identity politics is a shit game. Go watch some Jordan Peterson videos.

[–]Hannyu1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You didn't read the original post where I said it would become like BLM or feminist, I never said it would be perfect or not identity politics.

So you're going on a fucking rant for a tangent issue that was never denied.

[–]SunRaSquarePants0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It's not going to become like "BLM or feminist," because it is already that at its heart. Perhaps feminism and BLM did become about identity politics when that was not their goal, but the alt right is founded on identity politics. You can not separate the alt right from identity politics. Identity politics is bigotry. There is no principled stance that justifies bigotry. It will never grow out of being about hate, and I can't think of a single example of a group founded on identity politics that later became about individualism. That is not the trajectory of tribalism.

[–]Hannyu2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Identity politics is EXACTLY the foundation of BLM and feminism. Get the fuck outta here with that left wing propoganda bullshit.

[–]SunRaSquarePants1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Perhaps feminism and BLM did become about identity politics when that was not their goal

See what I did there? I left it open to interpretation. It may not have started out about identity politics, (perhaps it did), but it certainly is about identity politics now.

My point is that an argument can be made that neither of these movements started out as identity politics, while alt-right certainly did start out as identity politics. Regardless, both sides are firmly routed in identity politics at this time.

Now that you (perhaps) understand what I'm talking about, do you still think I'm spouting left wing propaganda?

[–]Hannyu1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Absolutely. There is no argument to be made that they did not start out in identity politics. Of the 3 groups, 2 of them have identity politics tied to their names BLACK lives matter, FEMinist. Their entire purpose is tied to their identity politics. BLM just rose up within the past few years, it's not like it's some 200 year old movement whose true origin was lost to history or anything.

I'm not saying the alt-right doesn't have roots in identity politics. I never denied that they do. In my other replies I even address my thoughts that they will always have the racial component to their movemet, but the other two literally have it in their name and that has been indicative of their missions since they were formed.

[–]SunRaSquarePants0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I can't tell if you're missing the point repeatedly on purpose, or because you don't have a choice. You're claiming I claimed you claimed things I never claimed. I can't keep track of your meta-misunderstandings.

but the other two literally have it in their name and that has been indicative of their missions since they were formed.

You can have any group of people seeking equal rights for individuals. So, no it doesn't necessarily follow that people are seeking special rights or special status just because they've formed a group identity. Saying that identity politics is in their name is the same as saying MRAs have identity politics in their name. They don't. They have identity in their name.

You only get identity politics when people start leveraging their identity to gain special rights and status. Special rights are not equal rights. Many groups formed around identity in search of equality of opportunity. Equality of opportunity is not the same as equality of outcome. When groups start seeking special status culturally, or so that the government intervenes and creates equality of outcome, then it becomes identity politics. This is what the alt-right is, it's what it formed as, it will not become this thing, nor will it outgrow it. It is a stupid movement, and it will either dissolve entirely, or continue to be stupid. It is stupid to identify groups by immutable traits and then ascribe perceived traits of individuals in the the group to all its members... it's like drawing the conclusion that because most nascar driver are white that all white people are race car drivers.

[–]Hannyu1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You're purposefully being pedantic now, and incorrect while doing so. MRA does have identity politics. It is a movement seeking political change for a certain group of individuals. Being identity political alone isn't enough to make a movement bad. The manner in which they conduct themselves in that pursuit is what makes them bad. I've never said the alt-right is currently a good movement. I said it's a growing one and that isn't surprising. I've said what I think it has the potential to be. I never said it is good in it's current format.

I disagree that for it to be identity politics it must be seeking equal outcome not equal opportunity. That is imposing values on it to fit your desired view, much like the arguments feminist make that power + priviledge is opression. Absolute garbage. The words identity and politics have meanings, just as the word opression does. This ideology is one commonly fought against in this sub.

Also your last analogy about nascar drivers is suh a false comparison that it's nonsensical.

[–]SunRaSquarePants1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

MRA does have identity politics. It is a movement seeking political change for a certain group of individuals.

That is not the definition of identity politics.

I've said what I think it has the potential to be.

And this is exactly what I think you're dead wrong about, and I've been trying to tell you exactly why I think you're wrong.

I disagree that for it to be identity politics it must be seeking equal outcome not equal opportunity.

This is bone-headed. How can you think that a group who wants the individuals in their group to have the exact same rights as all other individuals (equality of opportunity), is the same as a group that advocates that its members are given special consideration for their group membership rather than their individual actions (equality of outcome). Do you see how these are inherently different? That specific inherent difference IS identity politics.

That is imposing values on it to fit your desired view, much like the arguments feminist make that power + priviledge is opression.

No it's not. It's actually nothing like that at all. What you are talking about is a postmodern interpretation, which dictates that any interaction has an infinite number of possible interpretations. What the postmodern dictate lacks is the ability to judge which interpretations will result in expected outcomes, and which interpretations won't. In other words, it has no ability to judge an interpretation of reality by the accuracy of its predictions based upon that interpretation.

Also your last analogy about nascar drivers is suh a false comparison that it's nonsensical.

How on earth is that a false comparison? It may be nonsensical, but that's certainly because identity politics, the thing to which the analogy is being made, is in itself, nonsensical.

[–]Hannyu1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Look, believe what you want. The words are defined and you're trying to redefine them to fit your view. Go tell the dictionary it's wrong. I'm done wasting time, there obviously won't be a consensus here.

[–]SunRaSquarePants1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You're awfully arrogant and sure of your position for how tenuous that position is.

I'm willing to bet that the reason you didn't actually include these dictionary definitions is that they don't actually undermine my points. You seem perfectly willing to voice your tepid musings without any rigorous investigation, and then you have trouble backing up what your saying in any way that makes cohesive sense. It's fine to go to the mat to explain the validity of your interpretations, but you've sent me about 4 or 5 messages now wherein you just repeat your claims without being able to unpack any of them, or even hint in the direction of why or even how your claims are supported by a reasoned train of thought. And judging by the content of your responses, it's pretty evident you aren't even fully comprehending what I'm saying.

It's completely disingenuous to throw up your hands in mock frustration as if you somehow tried to engage in any meaningful way in backing up your claims.

[–]Hannyu1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/identity

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/politics

I didn't post them because the dictionary is easy to find.

I've sent you messages saying READ THE OTHER MESSAGES IN THE THREAD WHERE THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE. Jesus fucking christ. It was one of the first replies I had, that I had already explained in the thread my answers to the questions you were asking.

I don't owe it to you to repeat myself, defend myself, or explain myself. That doesn't make comprehension a problem. I comprehend exactly what you're saying. I'm saying you're wrong. Disagreement is not the same as a lack of comprehension.

It's not mock frustration. You've come in, tried to twist meanings to fit your view bias, and then when I said that's not how words work you started saying I was accusing you of accusing me, not defending myself (as if I owe it to random dude on the internet to defend myself?), and quoting things I say and ignoring the context to pick a fight or accuse me of saying things I haven't said. Nothing about that leads to mock frustration. It leads to wasting my time on someone who doesn't want to discuss, you just came here to try to pick a fight and spread your agenda.

[–]SunRaSquarePants0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

LOL you lost me at Identity + Politics = Identity Politics. It might be, but that's weak as shit, because neither of those undermine my points, or my definition. So, it's hard to see you doing anything other than just spinning out right now. Vent in therapy, keep it together in dialectic and debate.

[–]Zoenboen 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know, you think the Nazis were leftists because of the word socialist. That's moronic at best. You've only bought into the branding of the party by Hitler, they were not socialist, they were a reaction to left policies.

You also moved the mark. Alt-right isn't Nazism, but it approaches it on the spectrum. Nazism is a copy of fascism which lists as a tactic class and racism (add symbolism, nationalism, etc). And I guess the alt right dudes wearing swastikas were leftist plants?

Don't feel hurt you are on the same side of the spectrum as a Nazi. Others are on the same side as Mao. Just don't be a Nazi and a good start would not being an apologist for their basic beliefs.

[–]Troflmao 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I mean some alt-righters have been active racists/sexists/homophobes their entire lives, and just hopped on the Trump train when the opportunity arose. Although I do agree with you in that many (white) male voters were afraid of the hateful "feminist" culture and how that would advance without any real regulation or opposition under a Clinton government, which was the unfortunate nature of this election, both candidates were so strongly disliked across the country that it became more about "which candidate will leave less of a mess?" than "who will be the better president?"

The important thing though is that we don't condone the alt-right, and we must make it extremely clear that the men's rights community is not part of the alt-right. I like r/mensrights because for the most part you guys are about the facts, keeping people informed, and progression for men, NOT regression for women. Of what I've seen of the alt-right, they actively deny facts and care very little for women or men who aren't white.

Not that i interpreted your post as pro-alt-right, but i just wanted to reiterate that these people aren't our allies just because they hate feminists. I don't even hate them, I would even consider myself to be a feminist in that I fully understand how women are oppressed in our society, especially in developing nations. I don't have to agree with every feminist on earth to advocate for safe and happy lives for women. It's not a "pick a side" situation. Women around the world suffer, and so do Men. Usually in vastly different ways, but they both need help, and one doesn't have to come at the expense of the other.

The alt-right would directly go against what we're trying to accomplish, so they are not our allies. They don't care about facts. They don't listen, process, and adapt their mentality based on new information. They're often extremely racist to the point that they really don't care what happens to you if you're a man living outside of their country, or a minority living IN their country. They loathe women and don't want gender equality, they want subservient women who do what they're told and don't talk back. They actively oppose the homosexual community, which means denying rights to millions of people (many of whom are men), despite this group already being so heavily persecuted on the world stage. They actively support irresponsible warmongering, causing thousands of brave soldiers from both sides (again, unfortunately, mostly male) to die for reasons that they don't fully understand, then after they're discharged from their service they are neglected the help they need and very often become homeless, despite the alt-right claiming they adore our veterans, they will not demand for better treatment for them because it would mean more taxes. They support tax cuts that allow billionaires to profit even more off the hard and often unsafe work of millions of (mostly) men around the world, rather then challenge these billionaires to take a smaller salary and invest some of their massive wealth into happier lives and better working conditions for these men. They are not about equality, peace, or fair treatment for men, as you can see they actually don't really care about men at all. They're goals are selfish ones, they aim for prosperity for their close friends and family, and the rest of us can go to hell. I say this without a sliver of sarcasm or exaggeration when i say i have never seen a a popular political movement so closely resemble the rise of the Nazi Party. Not saying that the Republicans/conservatives are the Nazis in this situation, but a large nationalist politcal base that supports deportations of the nations unwanted is something we already tried and it didn't work out so well.

Tldr: Even if they're agreeing with you, don't condone the alt-right. They (usually) don't care about men, or women, or anyone but themselves and we don't need them as allies. Our movement may be small and quiet, but at least we can play by our own rules here.

[–]Hannyu 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I don't necessarily agree with your assessment of the alt-right, that seems very much like an assessment made by liberal media, not one grounded in reality. You can't associate alt-right purely with republicans. A lot of people would consider me alt-right because of my social views(ie tired of being demonized for being a white male), yet I don't share repliblican views on many other issues (honestly don't care one way or the other about gay issues- I'm fine with equal treatment, not special treatment though which is what the left seems to advocate for them. I'm not republican economically, and no one I know republican, alt right, etc want servant women who stay at home barefoot being baby factories. That's some leftist/feminist propoganda shit.)

It does contain some factions like that as far as the racim goes, as it not a fully independent movement yet, but I think as it grows it will separate from the hate movements like the kkk and neo nazis, like how the BLM movement is separate from something like the Black Panthers or NAACP for example.

I'm not saying it will grow into a perfect movement by any means, but I believe it will improve.

However it will always have the racial component. White people are being made the source of evil in western society, which means that movement will have backlash against not only anti-male issues but anti-white issues as well. That means they will probably have issues with illegal immigration, and will lean more nationalist and isolationist. And that's okay. They just need to evolve into doing it in a healthy way, separate from the hate movements. The problem is, no matter how much the movement matures, media and left wing agenda will always try to throw the racist/sexist label on them. You have to be vigilant in separating truth from what the media tells you, which I assume you try to be, or you never would have made it to the MRM.

[–]Troflmao 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I can agree with you to a degree. And I can also see my bias as a relatively left-leaning individual.

I'm with you 100% for the "attack on whites", i am seeing a trend in the media to always take the side of whoever isn't white/male and present the facts in a deceiving and manipulative way, or withhold the facts that don't support their agenda. It's unfortunate and anyone who speaks up against it is instantly labeled a bigot.

However in your original post you implied it was the liberal media's aggresiveness that caused the white men in our country to vote for Trump in protest, which i believe to be true for many of his voters, I still feel like a dangerous culture of bigoted hatred is bred (and even worse, encouraged) in the alt-right. I think Trumps political rise has made the behaviour of racism, sexism, xenophobia, and homophobia more popular and tolerated, at least within certain social circles. I think to say "the sjws MADE us do it" is a bit of a cop out for Trump supporters. There were many that were salivating at the opportunity of the socially acceptable bigotry that was tolerated by their president. I mean xenophobia was a MAJOR platform on Donnies campaign, they knew who they were voting for.

And that's my issue. The propogation of hate. It does, however, frustrate me that the other side of the debate isnt subject to the same criticism for propogating hate. We see rampant misandry tolerated whereas men entirely lose their social standing (and often more) just for saying something they didn't even realize was offensive towards women (some cases it was just the woman DECIDING it's offensive). We see white men constantly blamed for the evils of the world even though the black and middle-eastern communities have a far worse record for cultural sexism, racism, and homophobia. Despite this the sjws hypocritically side with men who gay-bash and abuse women just because they are minorities and therefore are immune to criticism. The double standard really really bothers me, especially as a queer man who most people assume is straight. People make the assumption that i have everything i need and I'm asking for too much if i ask for anything. It really sucks that we see such bigotry from both sides of the debate. I've been telling myself for a long time "don't make assumptions about people based on how they look". That's all it takes to not be a bigot, and yet so many people can't figure it out.

[–]Hannyu 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Well you provide me with a good example here - calling them xenophobes. Some on the most extreme end of the scale may be truly xenophobic, but the vast majority are tired of being called racist and bigot because they want to enforce our immigration laws. We already fight being underpaid, and it's an even bigger fight when they can hire illgals under the table for a fraction of the price. This is a real issue in a lot of southern states close to the border. It may seem like an asinine overexaggeration to someone from say New York or Kansas or the Carolinas, but it's not for them. Many of them wouldn't care if they stay if they're working, paying taxes, and obeying our laws. They do care about businesses getting away with hiring 3 of them for the price they'd have to pay 1 white guy.

You say well why not target business? Well because which fight can you win: big business with money to run you out of funds if you try to sue them or kicking out law breaking immigrants? Sure people kno who the real problem is, but it's a matter of pick the fights you can win.

That's not xenophobia, it's self interest.

[–]Troflmao 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you on that. I confess I am Canadian, and I'm constantly telling people here who are so pro-immigration that criticize the states and european nations for being anti-immigration that immigration here is far easier to regulate and control due to our unique geographical advatages. I Most immigrants in Canada have post-secondary, so yes i have my bias on immigration. I understand its not a simple as just letting everyone in no questions asked.

That being said i AM on r/mensrights and not r/altright. Maybe I'm being to hard on the alt-right but i also think you're being too easy. If i thought the altright had my best interests at heart id be right on board, but as a queer man, i cannot get behind a political movement that supports people like Pence and Sessions. As you said the movement hasn't progressed to the point where they're all on the same page, and they may end up a peaceful group with good intentions who are simply looking out for themselves, which is what I hope. However, i think the opposite could happen, similarly to what's happening to the feminist movement rn, where it progresses to uniformed people using activism as a cover to be hateful to specific groups they don't like. I think it just comes down to these movements becoming to big to fast so it's practically impossible to keep everyone on the same page.

[–]Hannyu 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh I completely get that. They have a long way to go before I'll associate with them, until the associations with hate groups are broken, but just being male, white, and more socially conservative, I get associated with them by default even if it's not true. I think the same happens for a lot of people. People got tired of saying "I'm not a racist just because I believe in following our laws." And started saying "fuck it i don't care if you think I'm racist." and embraced it. I think since that now forms what is a majority of the "alt-right" (rather than the true alt right of hate groups) it will eventually mature and separate from them, but I don't think it will be a perfect movement that suits, fits, or benefits everyone.

I'm not intending to be easy on them, I'm trying to be real about what has sparked the surge in popularity with that group and what I think the potential for it's future is.

[–]Troflmao 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Interesting perspective, I'll definitely be on the lookout going forward for sjws who use alt-right as a censorship tool for those who disagree with them. The intent of my original reply was simply because I was frustrated that MRAs get lumped in with the alt-right, and I wanted to point out why that isn't accurate and in fact the stereotypical alt-right agenda can directly harm men, which would be counterproductive to our cause, so I think in a way we feel the same about this, I guess we just have different sentiments for the alt-righters. I'm a little bit more cautious, but I'm sure you could understand why.

Great discussion though, i wish every political exchange i got into was this civil. Good day stranger :)

[–]Hannyu 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do agree though 100% both sides should experience the same scrutiny to their actions. I mean the republican economic stance is a nightmare. And we should be able to call that out without being a "liberal sjw snowflake" just like we should be able to talk about immigration reform without being "racist xenophobe bigot"

[–]wisty 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not just about people turning to the alt right.

I'm not a US citizen so I couldn't vote (well, not legally).

I wouldn't have voted Trump though. I'm not a conservative.

Would I have voted Hillary? Would I have bothered to go all the way to a polling booth, waited in line, then punched in a candidate I was lukewarm on? Sure, I think I would have, but there's a small chance I'd have just found something better to do with my time.

2020 is gonna turn the map blue with Trump clowning around (doing less harm than his more hysterical critics think - if only because he's not too competent). So would it have been bad to just not bother voting?

We're in similar boats but in opposite sides. My guy lost in primaries. I didn't really like Trump for president, but Hillary was probably the one person in America that was harder to like than him, and with a ton of baggage to make it easy to not trust her (I still think she's fucking crooked and feel like she's using her remaining influence to power the Mueller investigation.)

If Bernie had won the DNC I would have voted liberal for the first time most likely. He had a lot of stuff I disagree with (identity politics, he jumped on the anti-gun wagon once he got called out over it, things like that.) but also some stuff I liked (better allocation of taxes - paying for college instead of war, single payer healthcare for example)

As a straight white man, I had to bail on the democrats. My last act as a democrat was casting a vote for Hillary over Trump. I did a lot of soul searching and came to the conclusion that if I were to teach my son to act like I’d been acting, I’d be ashamed as a father. It got me thinking about the real issue. I’m not longer a democrat, now. I don’t know that it means anything really but I couldn’t set my son up to bow down to the people who seek his downfall.

So you are okay with children and the poor losing health insurance, and cutting social security, all to make an extra $0.50 an hour while the rich get more money to line their pockets?

Or you are okay with deporting working illegal immigrants because they came here when they were 4 years old with their parents? Even though they now have a family and aren't abusing the system like most Americans are?

Oh, you think we should give more money to the "military" so the contractors can put it in their pockets.

You're okay with paying more for a worse internet, only to have to pay more to get it as good as you just had it a year ago? You're okay with people who molest children and blame it on the democrats that they did it, or the party that has openly supported nazis.

You want less gun control because you think that will stop people from committing mass shootings? Better hope your child's school doesn't get shot up. It happens a lot here.

That's just more "I got mine, fuck you" mentality. If you're white, and more than 2 to 3 generations US, there is a decent probability that your "brave immigrant ancestors" got here "illegally" as well. Just like mine. The issue is that there is a border, and it is just a red herring. The US has flip flopped on border policy several times since it ecame a country, and historically speaking, immigrants are the true "pioneers" of the US. There are very few downsides to having an open border, and quite a few benefits. The US needs to remember the Statue of Liberty, and their own history, and get their head out of their collective asses about several red herrings. Immigration, and prohibition being the two most immediate issues.

Edit: not touching on PoC ancestry, and whether or not that was legal or illegal immigration.

Also, the indigenous peoples that we are still oppressing today, would kindly love you to "go back home"

My mother & grandmother are feminists, and abused me severely as a child for being male. It's not just my family, feminism has passed VAWA and Title IX, laws that punish innocent men, and shifted the way our society thinks to the point that 90% of children on psych meds are boys. There's nothing wrong with them, they just don't act like girls so society thinks they're wrong and need to be drugged. These drugs have lots of nasty side effects.

Feminism and the democrat party are largely connected. Obama is the one who signed Title IX into existence, and Bernie Sanders, who would have beat Trump if Hillary didn't rig the primary, was a key figure in passing VAWA.

*

Hours-later edit because it's halftime and Bustin Dimblefake can go to hell: and Hill-dawg herself is an avowed feminist who has said that women are the primary victims of war and that the criminal justice system, already criminally lenient on women, needs to be more lenient on women. So my mother and grandmother got away with destroying my life in the name of feminism, not even a slap on the wrist, but some women actually get punished for child abuse, and according to Hillary Clinton they should all get away with it. And that's who you think should have won? Wtf are you smoking? I disagree with Trump on a lot of things but it was between a guy I don't fully agree with, and Satan herself. I'd vote for him again if I could go back, and thank God he won.

*

The democrat party has all but declared war on human beings who made the mistake of being born white and male, and you honestly can't understand why people under attack would be upset with the attackers? You wish us harm and death for being born a certain way, and you call us Nazis? Fuck you. Fuck you, asshole. Fuck you.

Classic strawman

[–]7a7p 8 years ago* [recovered] (12 children) | Copy Link

Ok, let me start at the beginning of your comment:

Yes I’m for ending the affordable care act and any socialization of healthcare in the United States of America.

Yes I’m all for making more money. What other people make isn’t really my business...even corporations and businesses and the evil “rich” people.

Yes I’m for deporting anybody who illegally entered America. Period. Follow the proper procedures or get out.

Yes I’m all for increasing military spending but am against policing the world.

Yes I’m ok with deregulation of the internet. It worked fine before it was taken from the people who innovated it. Now they can continue innovating.

No, I’m not ok with anyone molesting children...but way to try to delegitimize a political point of view by trying to tie them to people who hurt kids. Those people exist everywhere, not just on the right side of American politics.

No, I’m not a Nazi nor am I a Nazi supporter. Again, nice tactics. Pretty big boogeyman you’re building, huh?

Yes, I’m pro-2nd amendment. I absolutely believe that the government should stop taking away rights. I also believe in “constitutional” carry. We shouldn’t have to ask the government to let us exercise our rights.

Thanks for playing, though.

Edit: as a side note, bullies like you are why was afraid to even attempt to understand any conservative points of view and the reason why I finally decided to leave the party. It got really obvious what was happening after Trump won and you all lost your minds and kicked the bullshit into high gear.

[–]grls_pm_ur_cute_feet 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

So you are okay with people dying of cancer because they cannot afford treatment? What about people who wait for things to get so bad they have to go to the ER, which they cannot afford, which drives the prices up for everyone to cover for the people who can't pay? Some people pay hundreds of dollars for a health insurance that only covers 70% after paying $15,000 out of pocket.

You aren't making more money though, if they keep cutting programs you will be working until you die since you won't get health insurance or a retirement plan. Some countries it is illegal to underpay workers and have them live off the government, here it is not. Almost all companies take advantage of that.

The whole thing of competition will make jobs better is just a load of shit that you ate up like candy. If everyone does it there is no competition for better jobs.

What about building the stupid wall? It won't stop illegal immigrants. What other plans did the republicans come up with? Why not make it easier to get citizenship? Why not have open borders so Mexicans can come and work here, pay taxes, and then go back home? There are other ways than just deporting.

Wen Georgia tried a mass deportation they lost money because guess what? No one wanted to take those hard working farm jobs. It's just an excuse lazy people give to explain why they don't have a job.

Why do we need to increase it? We already spend more than any other country, and we do not know if it is actually going towards defense or just lining pockets. Why not make it public where all this money really goes to?

The issue with deregulating the internet is increased prices for a worse service. There is almost no competition with the big companies. Most people only have one option. Only comcast, or only charter. Laws are in place making it almost impossible for other companies to either start or expand. Either make it easier for competition to be a thing and stop giving big companies a legal monopoly or it needs to be regulated so people don't get taken advantage of.

Not a boogeyman about the Nazis when Trump himself said they are very fine people.

Taking away rights is not the same as making it illegal to get an automatic weapon with a 100 clip magazine. You can still have a gun in your home to protect yourself, or a gun to go hunter, or a pistol to carry around. You just can't get a weapon meant for killing a lot of people in a short amount of time.

After your exchanges here with others, it made me realize how less I'm supportive of this sub. It was already bad with all the posts i saw that involved just blaming feminists and whatever they could blame, but they did not find it in them that they're responsible for action and change if they want it. The people supporting this movement of mensrights are starting to seem pretty backwards to me. Oh well, just wanted to put this out there.

[–]AlmostNotSure6 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The people supporting this movement of mensrights are starting to seem pretty backwards to me

If you generalize like that about any group of people, you can make them and their cause sound ridiculous. How about you keep an open mind about each individual as you encounter them? Maybe someone on here is for Men's Rights because in a divorce with a drug addicted irresponsible wife he lost custody of his children who are now living with her in a trailer.

Sometimes the mother is the better choice, sometimes the father is the right choice, and sometimes both parents are fit and should share custody. But the legal system doesn't work like that and this is just one example of why we have men fighting for Men's Rights now.

It's a 100% legitimate cause. But that doesn't mean that 100% of the people here on this sub are reasonable or righteous in their intent. Just because there are people on this sub who express things you don't like doesn't invalidate the others on this sub or in this movement.

I know that's harder to do. It's easier to dismiss a whole group. But it's not right, is it?

This sub, just like any other associated with a specific cause, attracts people who find in it an excuse to express hate. That doesn't de-legitimize the cause tho. Up until fairly recently this sub was not nearly as well known. And guess what? It wasn't nearly so bigoted because the only people finding their way here were actual Men's Rights activists. Go take a look at TwoX. It is literally 100 times the size of this sub and it is even more of a fucking shit show. I'm not saying Feminism is bad. I am not saying women do not have legitimate issues in today's world. I am talking about TwoX as a sub. If anything TwoX demonstrates that modern Feminism is even more corrupted than Men's Rights - and that is a shame. As subs get bigger they get shittier. Same with reddit. Same with movements and causes. It takes a LOT of centralized organization and exceptional leadership to prevent a cause from destabilizing as it grows. MLK and the other black leaders were great at this. Which is why he was assasinated. But that was a risky move by the people in power. Nowadays they are much smarter - they destabilize things before the congeal and before strong leaders can emerge.

For example, don't forget that there are a LARGE number of shill accounts here. There is a brigade of fake comments expressing hate and bigotry here trying to make this sub appear more hateful than it is. And those shills end up encouraging and drawing in the real bigots who then stay and the hate supports itself: job well done by the shills.

Those in power have gotten smarter in how they divide and conquer us. We need to be smarter too.

[–]TobieS4 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]Kravego 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

  • Single payer and ACA are not socialization of healthcare. Please learn wtf you're talking about before speaking.
  • Dreamers didn't have a choice and shouldn't suffer for the choices of their parents, especially if they've become productive members of society (without a social safety net mind you, since they couldn't get a SSN until just recently)
  • Why the fuck would you increase military spending? We don't need it. At all. Speaking as a military member here.

  • The internet was not "taken from the people who innovated it". That's a bunch of bullshit. It was regulated so that companies couldn't unfairly limit competition. Oh and btw, the reason it was regulated was because companies were trying to do shady shit. Regulation was in reaction to them, not spawned out of nothing.

Gerrymandering and voter suppression happened.

It's pointless for me to vote where I live, even though the state was determined by the court to be racially gerrymandered by the GOP. The GOP are even on record admitting that is exactly what they did, but now we're stuck waiting for the Supreme Court hears whether it's illegal. We can all guess how that'll turn out with a shitbag like Gorsuch being one of the judges.

[–]yesapig 26 points27 points28 points 8 years ago (60 children) | Copy Link

Gerrymandering has zero effect on presidential elections.

Also, democrats are guilty as well.

[–]chaun2 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So do what two democratic states are doing, and making it so that an unbiased third party is fed one data point (where every voter lives) and draws the lines based on even distribution. In this case the third party is an algorithm, and it effectively prevents gerrymandering on either side of the aisle.

[–]yesapig0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Sounds fair to me. Unfortunately, the Congressional Black Caucus and possibly the US Supreme court would disagree. “Majority Minority” districts would be decimated, resulting in fewer minority representatives.

Gerrymandering allows for voter suppression. Whether through selective purging or limiting voter locations and resources.

Also, show me a state where any other party gerrymandered anything close to Republicans.

Maryland.

Please explain how gerrymandering enables voter suppression.

[–]Pake1000 8 years ago* [recovered] (10 children) | Copy Link

Last I checked, Maryland isn't pushing for laws that promote suppression. Unless I'm mistaken, then please link me to a source where they are purging voters from the books or limiting resources primarily targeted at certain races, wealth, or political leaning.

As nasty looking as Maryland's districting is, the gerrymandering there put in place a Republican when any simpler map would have made it completely Democrat. Even still, I do agree that the lines should be made simpler if they aren't going to move to a proportional system.

[–]yesapig 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

You ask for a “democratically” gerrymandered state...I gave you one.

If you understood the purpose of gerrymandering, you’d know why 1 of 8 Maryland districts being Republican is not at all a surprising outcome.

And you still have not explained your claim of a link between gerrymandering and voter suppression (in national elections).

[–]Pake1000 8 years ago* [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link

What I asked for was one gerrymandered as badly, meaning a state that the balance of representation is disproportionate. There are twice as many democrat voters than republican in Maryland and fairly evenly distributed throughout the state. You cannot draw a simple districting map of Maryland and end up with multiple Republican representatives.

Read about North Carolina if you want to see gerrymandering and voter suppression in action.

[–]yesapig 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

I’m just going to assume that you mis-spoke about gerrymandering as an enabler of voter suppression in presidential elections, since you still have not even attempted an explanation.

And yea, Maryland gerrymandering is just as bad as NC. In fact, it’s going to the US Supreme Court too.

Enjoy your Sunday.

[–]Pake1000 8 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

Voter suppression played a role in the presidential election. Gerrymandering played a role in letting voter suppression happen. You cannot claim thousands of people being prevented from legally voting didn't play a role.

[–]yesapig0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I’m not claiming anything. I’m asking you, very specifically, HOW gerrymandering enables voter suppression in presidential elections, as you claim.

[–]Pake10001 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

When a party gerrymanders a state and passes laws that suppress select people's right to vote, how can it not affect a presidential election? That's thousands of people being prevented or dissuaded from legally voting for a presidential candidate of their choice.

[–]Herrenos-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

How does gerrymandering prevent people from legally voting?

[–]Pake10002 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Gerrymandering can lead to voter suppression laws. North Carolina is a good example of how gerrymandering allowed the GOP to suppress a large voting population.

[–]sadieslapins -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. You can draw a map with more than one reliably republican district in Maryland. It was gerrymandered to get rid of a second republican district.

[–]Drew__Brees 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Go look at the congressional districts in Chicago.

[–]Pake1000 8 years ago* [recovered] (18 children) | Copy Link

Chicago is bad, but with simple lines drawn like Iowa, even the GOP acknowledge they won't change the states majority party by a long shot. It's no where near as problematic as places like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Another heavily gerrymandered state is Maryland, but interesting thing about Maryland is that without gerrymandering, it would have 8 Democrats and no Republicans compared to the current situation of 7:1.

[–]yesapig 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Re: Maryland

That’s the whole point of gerrymandering...to “corral” the opposing party’s high density areas into a single (or select few) districts. It solidifies the majority’s control.

[–]Pake1000 8 years ago* [recovered] (16 children) | Copy Link

I don't think you understood what I wrote. Maryland is gerrymandered by Democrats, but contrary to the norm, it benefits Republicans by giving them a seat they wouldn't normally have with simple lines drawn. For Republicans to have more than 1 seat, the map could not be drawn with simple districts.

[–]yesapig 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I understand what you wrote.

The entire purpose of gerrymandering is to do just what was done in Maryland. It puts a large number of Republican voters in a single district, thereby securing the other districts and a permanent majority for democrats. This is not in any way a “benefit” to Republicans.

You aren’t so naive to think the dems drew district lines to help out the repubs are you?

[–]Pake1000 8 years ago* [recovered] (14 children) | Copy Link

You are not understanding what I wrote. Yes, it put a large number of Republicans in one district, but without having done so, it would be 8 secure Democrat districts.

It's a state that has no simple solution other than proportional representation of Republicans want more than 1 representative.

[–]yesapig-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Republican Roscoe Bartlett won the 6th district in the previous 10 congressional elections but was defeated in 2012 by a Dem, after gerrymandering reduced republican voters in the district to a minority, from a previous solid majority.

R’s controlled more than one congressional district prior to the 2010 gerrymandering. Now they have 1, and your argument is that “there is no other way”?

Also, the redrawing was so egregious that the USSC has agreed to hear the case.

Honestly, I don’t see how anyone can defend gerrymandering in one state, but decry it in another, unless they’re not arguing principles but rather engaging in ideological spin.

[–]Pake10003 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Sure, you can gerrymander district lines to make Republicans having more representatives, but not with SIMPLE district lines.

You misunderstand me if you think I'm defending gerrymandering in Maryland. I'm 100% for simple district lines that remove the gerrymandering because it would mean no more republicans representing Maryland. Maybe then the GOP will start helping push for proportional representation throughout the US.

[–]yesapig-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

How much more simple could it be, than going back to previously established districts?

[–]Pake10002 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]yesapig0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If not, why are they drawn this way?

No, that's not at all what I said and I have no idea how you came to believe that.

What I said is that NEITHER today's or 2002's maps are simple. The two maps are very similar in how they snake districts around. Claiming 2002 is better/simpler than today's or vice versa is a ridiculous claim.

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Why do you think the lines were redrawn in 2011, resulting in in district 6 going from 55% R to 35% R, and the R’s losing a seat that had been held for over 2 decades? Prior to that redrawing, R’s had consistently held more than 1 seat. Since then, only 1.

Simplicity — no To benefit R’s — no To benefit D’s — ? Other - __

[–]Pake10001 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Are you arguing for increased gerrymandering?

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No, I’m asking you a question (see above)

[–]Pake10003 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The fairest lines would be simple, even though that means secured Democrat districts, i.e. no republican representatives. Therefore, the current lines being 7:1 more accurately represent Maryland than the previous ones that were 6:2.

Are you arguing that Maryland should be gerrymandered to give a second seat to Republicans or do you believe a simple map should be drawn even though that removes the last seat?

[–]yesapig0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Currently Dems 2:1 advantage in registered voters Dems 7:1 advantage in congressional representation

Prior to 2011 gerrymandering Dems 2:1 advantage in registered voters Dems 3:1 advantage in congressional representation

And this “more accurately represents Maryland”? Lol

The D’s gerrymandered their districts to go from a 6:2 advantage to a 7:1 advantage, even though 6:2 was already disproportionately in their favor. These are the facts, yet you defend it as justifiable because “simplicity” or “benefits Republicans” or something something. Yes, yes it benefitted R’s so much that they are taking it to SCOTUS. to overturn it!

The fact that you cannot admit, even when presented with the hard numbers, that Maryland was redrawn to benefit D’s reveals that you are either (1) intellectually dishonest or (2) a rabid ideologue. I don’t wish to continue this discussion in either case.

Bu-bye!

[–]Pake10003 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If every country is 2:1, would that mean that districts would end up being 2:1?

No. It wouldn't. It would mean all 8 districts would be one party because all 8 districts would be won 2:1.

Like I said, make the lines simple using an algorithm, it removes the gerrymandering, and we celebrate another republican losing power.

[–]twentyThree59-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Also, democrats are guilty as well.

...of far lesser crimes? Sure. Of equal crimes? Not even close.

[–]yesapig7 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Depends on your perspective I suppose. The Maryland gerrymandering (by democrats) case is at the Supreme Court, along with the Wisconsin (by R’s) case.

[–]twentyThree59-3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yea, my perspective includes several issues though, not just 1. That's a rather over simplified argument you are making.

[–]yesapig3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Such as?

[–]twentyThree59-3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Well lets back up... perhaps I shouldn't have used the word "crimes." After all, you didn't. I picked that word. But really, I mean it in a less "legal" way and in a more ethical way. I do believe "ethical crimes" are a thing. Slavery was legal, but an ethical crime.

So with that said... where do I fucking start with the republicans... taxes, public services, human rights, lies, sexism, racism, general bigotry, active partisanship (looking at kentucky's fillibuster of their own bill for that one), corruption, etc etc etc

Explain to me again how we are cutting so many services and spending more?

Don't get me wrong... Democrats aren't saints. But acting like they are equal is like saying that a splinter hurts as bad as multiple gunshot wounds. There is a reason every Republican gov domination in the last 120 years has been followed by a terrible depression.... they fuck shit up, we go back blue, make progress, people forget, we go red, fall apart, rinse repeat.

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

1953 Recession followed Truman (D) 1957 and 1960 Recessions followed Eisenhower (R) ‘70, ‘73-‘75 - followed Johnson (D) but Nixon (R) was in office by ‘69 ‘80-‘82 followed Carter (D) ‘90-‘91 followed Reagan (R) 2001 followed Clinton (D) 2008 followed Bush

Recessions are natural events in our economy, and no political party is more or less responsible for them.

Depressions are rare, and causes are very complicated. Politics is not one of them.

If I think taxes should be lower, am I deplorable?

If I think “services” should not be the purview of Washington bureaucrats, am I an uncaring monster?

Democrats are just as racist and bigoted as Republicans (because it’s a human flaw, not a political one). I used to be a democrat, was heavily involved in state politics, and there were lots of racist assholes involved...on both sides. The dems just don’t get called on it nearly as much (example: Joe Biden remarking how Obama was such a clean and well-spoken black man). The argument can be made (and has been by several prominent black academics) that democrat policies are largely responsible for the sad state of affairs in the African-American community today.

Neither party is monolithically hateful/bigoted/ignorant...both are in it for themselves and pander for votes, and neither can be trusted to do what they say.

Don’t be a schmuck that looks for the (D) or (R) when voting. Look at policy, not party affiliation.

[–]twentyThree591 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Don’t be a schmuck that looks for the (D) or (R) when voting. Look at policy, not party affiliation.

I do, but I'm also not blind to the pattern that the better policy tends to have a (D) with it.

no political party is more or less responsible for them.

While there have been problems under both parties, we can measure objectively which one has done better and it is not a tie. Your statement is false. http://thereformedbroker.com/2016/12/13/every-unified-republican-government-ever-has-led-to-a-financial-crash/

If I think taxes should be lower, am I deplorable?

Again, this is an over simplification of the issue. Are you suggesting there is no bottom end to how low taxes should go? Google defines "deplorable" as "shockingly bad quality" and if you truly think that we would be best off with zero taxes and zero public services - then you might be of "shockingly bad quality."

If I think “services” should not be the purview of Washington bureaucrats, am I an uncaring monster?

AGAIN with the over simplification. Depends on which services right? Some parts of our environment span across several states and it is absolutely up to the federal government to help handle matters of multiple states. And in some ways, these services (recently reduced) generate money, not cost money - so are we just wanting to do worse or not aware of what we are losing?

Neither party is monolithically hateful/bigoted/ignorant...

Of course not, and no one suggested as much.

Honestly, you aren't making much progress with your point. I'm not here to push "Dems are the best forever." I just think the "they are equally bad" isn't true. One is clearly worse.

I'm just curious, are you a libertarian? I've had some talks with people who think we would be best off if there was zero government and people picked which police station that pay their dues to, etc etc etc. Just want to know if thats where you are too.

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Libertarian leanings (I would say classic liberal).

With regard to the article you linked... the author implies, by use of the words “has led to,” a causal effect between Republican policies and financial disaster, while providing no argument addressing those policies, or how they “led to” disaster. This is the classic “correlation vs causation” fallacy.

-Cheap and easy housing loans led to the ‘08 crisis, but the policies that got us those loans were pushed by both D’s and R’s. Democrats insisted on relaxed criteria and low income loan guarantees for inner cities and minorities, and R’s were happy to see the new business coming into Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and deregulated to accommodate.

-The Great Depression, almost all historians agree, was caused by the economic contraction resulting from reduced demand after the ‘29 crash. The initial stock market crash was mismanaged by the federal reserve (a non-political entity), who tightened monetary policy when it should have done the exact opposite. This led to a run on the banks, a deflating dollar, etc. No serious historian argues a political cause.

Speaking of “overly simplistic”, this author is the posterboy.

[–]twentyThree591 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So you're basically saying "its not black and white, thus it's 50% 50%" which is the "false dichotomy fallacy." Oops!

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Uh, no...a false dichotomy fallacy is presenting only 2 choices as either/or, while ignoring other possibilities.

[–]twentyThree591 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So you truly believe the parties just happen to be perfectly equal in terms of shit they cause society? You aren't just ignoring the fact that one party is slightly more responsible, you are saying "no, they are perfectly equally responsible?"

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No, I’m saying that trying to blame very complicated events and outcomes on political affiliation is just silly.

There’s a lot more to it than D or R.

[–]twentyThree591 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

There’s a lot more to it than D or R.

Not a lot else in power though. I assure you, I'm all for third parties and voting reform, I actually think its one of the most important things we could accomplish.... but its not like other groups have had control over government in quite some time. Government has always had relationships with other entities, but the people actually passing the bills are currently all D or R.

No, I’m saying that trying to blame very complicated events and outcomes on political affiliation is just silly.

Ultimately the people that determine laws are people with political affiliation. It's not silly - it's direct cause and effect. Ignoring it is silly. And by silly I mean a bad idea and not clear minded.

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

In my adult lifetime, which goes back to the 2nd Reagan term, the truly catastrophic ideas have generally been bipartisan.

The world is very complex and only politicians are arrogant enough to think they can control outcomes.

[–]twentyThree591 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The world is very complex and only politicians are arrogant enough to think they can control outcomes.

Again with over simplification (again, false dichotomy). They don't control - they influence. Of course they don't have full control. No one is saying that. But you can't tell me that they have zero influence. Their laws do things and who is elected does change which laws get enacted.

the truly catastrophic ideas have generally been bipartisan.

Again, I'm in favor of voting reform to get third parties in there. But the reality is that a bunch of bad ideas being shared, does not mean that both parties equally shit on Americans with bad ideas.

Your originally claim I took issue with was "they are both guilty." To which I said "yes, but not equally guilty." To which I stand by. Yes, D's have contributed some issues. Just not in equal amounts to R. No amount of "But they've done some bad stuff" can convince me they are equally responsible. They aren't THAT far out of influence.

[–]yesapig1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You still don’t understand what “false dichotomy” means. You really should try to before you use the term.

I didn’t say politicians don’t influence, I said they arrogantly believe they can predict the effects of their policies. They cannot.

Honestly, I have no interest in arguing with an ideologue, so enjoy the superbowl and drink a beer and for fuck’s sake RELAX...there are always going to be R’s and D’s, but you don’t have to hate one side just because you disagree. You’ll have a miserable and unproductive life if you do.

[–]twentyThree591 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I said they arrogantly believe they can predict the effects of their policies

No, you said don't control outcomes, which is a black and white word. They either control, or they don't. This was a correct use of "false dichotomy." You presented a situation in which they do one of two things, do or do not control things. That wasn't a healthy framing of the situation. They do influence things though.

you don’t have to hate one side just because you disagree.

I don't. I just recognize they aren't equal in their sins. That's all this came down to. You said they are all guilty, and all I've said is "but not equally guilty." You can continue to act like I'm 100% black and white about this, but I'm not. It's just naive to think that 2 evil parties means that 2 parties are equally evil.

Like imagine if you were forced to leave your home and you can choose between North Korea or Russia. I mean. Russia fucking sucks... but it's still better than NK right? You might still get killed yea... but it's probably better off.

And I guess I just suppose I care about trying to prevent America from slipping into being as trashy as Russia is now with it's fucked up government. Perhaps you don't realize how poorly things can go and still have faith that America could never end up that shitty, but I don't. In fact it looks like we are headed that way to me.

and for fuck’s sake RELAX...

You haven't been relaxed during this conversation? What does that tell you?

[–]FelixDKitteh -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yeah that's why 2 recent presidential election we're lost despite Democrats winning the popular vote. If we actually lived in a democracy Trump wouldn't be president. But we live in a representative democracy and the representation is skewed by gerrymandering. Which is why a Republican can lose by a 5% margin but still be president.

Show me a case where Democrats have gerrymandered. The last time I saw a republican lie about that was when Democrats were correcting gerrymandering and suddenly republicans we're losing, and it was 'unfair'.

[–]yesapig 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You don’t know what you’re talking about. A state’s popular vote decides to whom its electoral votes go. The gerrymandering within a state has no effect on how those electoral votes are cast. You are linking the electoral college and gerrymandering when there is no such link.

Democrats gerrymander just as much as Republicans. Look at Maryland’s district map.

As a historical note, gerrymandering became a thing when democrats successfully pushed for “minority majority” districts to increase minority representation in congress. Unintended consequences and all that....

[–]chaun2-3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You keep throwing out Maryland..... there is an easy solution to gerrymandering that two democratic states are using. You feed an algorithm one data point, namely where the registered voters live. You don't give it any other information. It draws simple lines to evenly divide your districts.

In Maryland's case this would be horrible for the Republican constituents. The state would immediately shift from 7 Democratic seats, with 1 Republican seat, to 8 D, and 0 R. They gerrymandered the state because they didn't want all the Republican constituents to be unrepresented. We tend to have a thing in this country about taxation without representation, in most cases, so they did gerrymander, because without doing so it would be more unfair. Please explain how you would fix this

[–]yesapig4 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Maryland had MORE Republican congressional districts BEFORE the gerrymandering occurred. The guy in district 6 had won his 10 previous elections. In 2012, after gerrymandering, he lost. District 6 was redrawn to make R’s a minority. Since the redrawing, R’s have not won more than 1 district. For you to claim the dems redrew the lines to benefit R’s is laughable.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But we live in a representative democracy and the representation is skewed by gerrymandering.

You do realize that gerrymandering has absolutely no effect on national elections, right? Because you're not voting at the district level like you would in a local election, you're pooling together all the state's votes to decide which national candidate that state voted for.

[–]FelixDKitteh-1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Except for states which split their electoral votes based on voting regions. Which is exactly why Trump won. Because of the gerrymandering.

Huh? You're either clueless or out of your mind. The only proportional states are Maine and Nebraska. Maine has 4 electoral votes and Nebraska has 5.

Trump won the electoral vote 304-227. Do the math. Even if you doubled the amount of electoral votes that Maine and Nebraska had and gave them all to Clinton, she still wouldn't have won.

He won the election because of a bullshit, archaic, non-democratic process that needs to be fucking torn from the Constitution. The Electoral College is a relic from an old era and is completely antithetical to the principles this nation was founded on.

If a system allows a President to be theoretically elected with only 25% of the population voting for them, then the system needs to be abolished.

Luckily, the NPVIC is getting closer and closer to making the EC completely irrelevant.

[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The Electoral College is a relic from an old era and is completely antithetical to the principles this nation was founded on.

Really? So you're ok with California steamrolling every election with their massive population?

[–]Kravego 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"California" wouldn't steamroll any election, because "California" wouldn't vote. The voters in California would vote. In any case you could think of, this would actually lessen the liberal power of California by giving voice to all the Republicans that live there.

In every state that is considered a sure-in for one side or another every 4 years, you have a very large portion of the population that isn't getting heard:

  • There are 18 million registered voters in the state of California, 30% of those are republican. Over 5 million.
  • There are 8.5 million registered voters in the state of Texas, 3.8 million of them are democratic.

And this is the case for every single state except the swing states.

And that's not even touching the other problems of the EC:

  • That every single state, no matter how low the population, gets at least 3 electoral votes. That means that Wyoming, the least populated state, gets 1 electoral vote for every 190,000 people, while more populated states like Texas get 1 electoral vote per 780,000. Not all votes are created equal apparently.

  • The EC completely disregards the millions of Americans living in places other than the 50 states. Places like Puerto Rico, which has a higher population than 21 states + DC. Plus all the other territories.

The states shouldn't elect the President, the people should. One person, one vote, period.

[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The states shouldn't elect the President, the people should. One person, one vote, period.

That is where you are wrong. The US is not one large territory. It is a collection of small countries that have made an agreement to work together, IE states. And the problem with unequal representation maybe needs addressing, but not by scrapping the entire system.

[–]Kravego 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is a collection of small countries that have made an agreement to work together

Yeah no. It is NOT a collection of small countries, IE the EU. If it were, then leaving would be an option. And as much as Texans like to say they could, they can't secede and neither can any other state.

Like it or not, since the resolution of the Civil War we are a federal government, not a group of countries in close association.

I'm not sure all of America should be used as a comparison point. That's what makes it possible to argue "If 50% of America is female, shouldn't we have 50% women at Google?" A more appropriate comparison would be college graduates, because that already filters out most of the skew based on personal interests, opportunity, etc.

For example, more Asians probably go to college than whites, compared to all Asians and whites in America. This makes sense because white people are probably more spread out into rural areas where technical degrees might not valued as highly. Instead, white Americans might just be settling for local farming, manufacturing, trades, etc. These are just guesses, but my point is that there are some non-discriminatory reasons for Google employees to not match the general US population.

This comment right here really exposes the hypocrisy of the leftists. If they really wanted equality of outcome they'd set hiring standards by national and racial gender surveys (I'm against that too).

Far leftism isn't even about equality of outcome it's about suppression of those perceived highest on the intersectionality totem pole and promotion of the lowest. So wealthy, abled, white men and then women must be pulled down and African, native, disabled, LGBTQ, must be promoted REGARDLESS of qualification.

Scary times we live in.

What's CRAZY is this type of thinking HURTS minorities and ethnic minorities. If you are promoted in a school, organization or job and you aren't qualified everybody knows it. If nobody wants to be the person or group that's always underqualified that only perpetuates stereotypes. If every time you met a particular ethnic or sexual minority they were incompetent how would your perception of them grow? And how often would they succeed constantly being promoted above their ability?

We had more successful racial mixing in the 70's when people told racist jokes and openly mocked eachothers racial stereotypes because at least that's some type of genuine interaction.

wasn't always like this. :( i have -20 for pointing it out here, but a few years ago i said the same thing but had very high karma, because the general stance was more egalitarian. now it's starting to look more and more like a mirror of what the sub was originally against.

[+]Mrmojoman0 -18 points-17 points-16 points 8 years ago* (22 children) | Copy Link

"tranny" is generally seen as a derogatory name. just saying this because i feel it was not your intention to use such a harsh name for trans people.

[–]fullhalter 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Also, isn't tranny more often used to describe transvestites and not transsexuals?

[–]SchalaZeal01 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably just because there are more of one than the other.

[–]chambertlo 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm gay and we use the term tranny all the time and no trans person every seems to have a problem with it. Just sayin'. The only people that do are white liberals.

[–]Mrmojoman0 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

well i've known some trans people who do. i know a lot of gay people who call each-other "faggot" and aren't offended by it, but it's still commonly a slur, and in this same context would often be seen as such.

also many trans people are both white and liberal. apparently from the way you worded it, none of the trans people you have ever known are white and liberal.

[–]binrobinro 37 points38 points39 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Sure. Stop being offended by everything.

[–]Mrmojoman0 35 points36 points37 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

i'm hardly offended by everything, but if there is a conversation saying

"this is racist against white people, they wouldn't care if it happened to a nigger"

it kind of removes the leg you have to stand on. and i've found people who didn't know before that "tranny" is even a negative term.

[–]_KingMoonracer 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]JackGetsIt 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think this is why a lot of the conservatives did so poorly in political discourse for so long. They failed to learn the lingo and everytime they engaged in discussions with liberals they used offensive language often without even realizing it. Finally guys like Ben Shapiro came along and could eloquently communicate the conservative positions with proper language.

[–]Yahu54 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is that conversation between two white people, or two black people.

Or maybe one of each?

Look, I’m as fed up with the PC bullshit as anyone else, but that word really is impolite. Transvestite, Transexual, Trans. It’s like calling a Sikh a Sand Nigger. All it does is give off an ignorant vibe.

I made the same comment a few years ago in this subreddit, and only got support. Seems like more and more lately there is an anti-liberal curve here, and a less reasonable disposition in the newer commenters

[–]JackGetsIt 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I don't think it was the commenters intention either. If the MRA people want to try to reach across to the leftists and have conversations at least learn some of the lingo and what it means.

If you're going to have civil conversations you shouldn't use insults and using the word tranny is different than the pronoun debate. I'm a libertarian and I think the poor white, black and hispanic community would be helped if we reduced not increase welfare but I'm not going to call them rednecks or the N word when I'm talking about the subject. That's rude and undermines my point and will only be used by my advocates to dismiss me.

[–]ludwigavaphwego1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You didn't learn their lingo of 'tranny' though. Not sure they will use yours either.

well, you should be able to tell even by the way it is said that it is originally meant as an offensive term.

like saying "hey blackey" to a black person would probably gather an unfavorable response, even though it's not a common term, the way it is said is obviously derogatory in nature.

i'm pretty sure "trans" is the standard way of saying it without sounding like a redneck.

[–]BlairResignationJam_ 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm confused - I'm assuming this writer got those quotes from evidence presented in the lawsuit (e.g listing them as "exhibit 40") but there are no links. Does anyone have a better source?

[–]Sarin_G_Series 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I hope the lawsuit is won by Damore, but I can see a really nasty outcome if it isn't; Google's team of undoubtedly high profile lawyers managing to get a legal precedent established that actually defines a "victim heirarchy," and legal definition of "discrimination" meaning "prejudice plus power" so that it becomes legally impossible to discriminate against Christian, male, heterosexual, whites.

[–]mikesteane 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

a legal precedent established that actually defines a "victim heirarchy,"

Would be an infringement of the equal protection clause in the 14th amendment.

[–]Xorism 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Kravego0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]flee_market 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Political views should never enter the workplace.

I don't care if you're left, right, far right, far left, anarchist, the literal reincarnation of Abraham Lincoln, a particularly gifted and long-lived octopus, or a Martian.

Personal views belong in your personal life. The professional workplace is where you focus on getting the job done. That's what professionals do.

Incredible to see such a huge company committing suicide like this, but I guess that's inevitable once a company reaches maximum bloat - the smart and driven ones who made it great take their winnings and leave, while the ladder-climbing virtue signalers move in to take their place.

I give Google 10 years tops before it becomes another forgotten giant.

[–]Kravego 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Political views should never enter the workplace.

So the guy should have been fired then?

For the record, I agree. There are 2 things I refuse to discuss with coworkers: politics and religion.

[–]flee_market 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I dunno about fired, unless it was like his sixth offense or something - if he's otherwise a good worker he should've been told to lock that shit up and keep it at home/at the bar/where ever. If he could do that, no reason why he couldn't keep being a productive member of the team.

But if not, then yeah, he's hurting the rest of the team and he has to go. That's literally "not personal, just business".

[–]JackGetsIt 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Political views should never enter the workplace.

There's a lot of problems with this though. Many jobs are connected to politics or religion which nowadays has become politicized. We are also at a time in history where the country cannot come together on key issues so we are cleaving like we did in the run up to the civil war. Another angle on this is that because of the internet we've lost a sense of collective culture everything runs through our political tribes. Without collective culture it'd difficult to find non-political topics to talk about at the workplace.

Finally politics are related to our personal philosophy which is connected to where we work and how we work. So even when you ignore politics at work they are still very much a part of your day.

[–]JackGetsIt1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Good thing that's not what we are arguing.

[–]iHaveAglove1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You just argued that? Lol

[–]JackGetsIt2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yes. The original point is that Europeans didn't invent slavery and certainly are not responsible for all the negative in the world. There are too many variables to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt the 'goodness' or 'badness' of judeo-christian culture. It's a silly argument and it's not really how historians analyze things for good reason.

[–]iHaveAglove1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No. The original point was someone confused how white people could ever have a bad reputation in recent history

[–]JackGetsIt2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Actually I sympathize. You could spend 10 years of daily scholarship just focusing on the atrocities. It's like they never stop. However, I can assure you it's a much more nuanced picture as your scholarship expands. Just looking into the Huns and some of the more brutal Chinese periods, or Imperial Japan or Vlad the impaler or Pol pot; atrocity and brutality are certainly not horded by people with less melanin.

If you like macro history stuff I highly recommend Jared Diamond. His book Guns, Germs, and Steel is a slog but there's a great three part mini series out there that walks through his thesis quite well.

Another historian I'd recommend is James Burke and the old Connections books and TV series. It shows you history and war is a lot more connected to random inventions and events than identity and borders. Both Diamond and Burke combined will rock your world.

Another interesting thing to realize is that people living in the same area and the speaking the same language and worshipping the same religion can change DRASTICALLY in only a few centuries. The middle east went from spread out peaceful tribes, to cut throat warring tribes to the most educated civilization in history that invented algebra and collected the worlds ideas and then it burnt that library down and burnt all their monuments and wrapped their women in black cloth in the desert. These are all the same people. How would you label those people violent? Peaceful? Smart? Dumb?

Then within a society you can have huge variability. Some of the irish were living almost like cavemen while others (monks) were reading and praying 20 hours a day and saving the greatest works of literature as the viking raided and raped all of Europe.

History is amazing and fascinating.

[–]iHaveAglove1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I’d also argue that white people where the most imperialistic than any other group. Most bad things happened within in continents between neighbors. Britain, the rest of Europe, and America really fucked with EVERYONE, stripped back culture, and exploited recourses. And sure, we didn’t invent slavery, but we certainly got the most use out of it, and we have to done very little as a culture to reconcile what we have done to other peoples.

[–]JackGetsIt1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's why I want you to read Diamond because of a combination of factors and inventions European imperialism was just the first lucky contestant to use new technology to their benefit. I have no doubt the aztecs or the egyptians or the japanese would have engaged in imperialism as well.

You also need to be hyper careful about your judgement of imperialism. The flip side of imperialism is mercantilism. Without imperialism we don't get world trade and cultures mixing and industrialization and the world we have today.

The Japanese were also BRUTAL imperialists. If you want to argue they learned it from europeans and it's all europe's fault that's fine but if you look at the rhetoric of Japan at the time period I have no doubt they would have done it without a European model. That's just another example of something that's really hard to prove.

You tell them that you're not white.

If they say anything, just look at them, appalled:

I would laugh right in his pathetic face. I would make sure my face was like an inch away. Then I would laugh like a maniac.

So...

Remember when everyone made the facile argument about women's pay, saying: "If women do the same work for 70 cents on the dollar, why not create an all-female company that can outperform mixed gender companies for less money?"

Well. If you can figure out how to run a business better than Google, why not ignore their internal diversity philosophy and out compete them as superior white men?

Is this what men want now? To force companies to treat them special, or cry about it and sue? Can't the titans of industry that you are simply thrive on their own merits and hard work?

Where are you getting this from? Men aren't asking for special treatment, they're asking for equal treatment.

[–]HereForTheDough-7 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Equal treatment is being treated as the company wishes. They want to maintain a benefit from being a majority.

[–]kneo243 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Equal treatment is being treated as the company wishes. They want to maintain a benefit from being a majority.

None of that is remotely true and I again have to ask where you're getting this idea from. Then again it probably doesn't matter as you're a brand new account, much like the other ones with downvotes here, pushing the exact same narrative.

[–]HereForTheDough0 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Oh well, I can't argue with that.

I again have to ask where you're getting this idea from

From this lawsuit alleging that Google has these practices. Are you saying they can't tell their employees how to behave? Why not just not work for Google? Do you see a lot of minorities trying to line up work with Breitbart? Trophy hunters working for PETA?

Don't like Google's stance on how you present yourself, don't work for Google. Simple. This isn't about discrimination against anything but conduct that they feel does not fit their company image.

Feel free to boycott them or compete. Maybe you can get a law passed giving white men guaranteed rights to attention at events regardless of what their employer wishes. You know, like nobody else has.

[–]kneo243 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

There are federal laws in place to protect against discrimination. This lawsuit is alleging said discrimination on many fronts. If you're getting that from the lawsuit, I suggest you go back and reread it and apply it to not only federal law, but also California's own laws.

Do they have a right to do this? Yes. Do I agree with it? No.

Just because they have a right to do something, doesn't mean I have to like it.

[–]TheHornyHobbit5 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Do they have a right to do this? It seems pretty blatantly sexist to me.

[–]MobiusCube4 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Idk if they have the right, and it is sexist.

[–]MikeKolas-15 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The rants of white men claiming discrimination at tech companies is eerily similar to BLM.

It's someones shill account. Look at the account age. Now look at the comment karma. It's someone who spends all day sitting in r/politics, happening to get in early enough with comments to reap the karma.
