Let’s say as a man I do my absolute best to look great and walk around the city or the mall or the local park.

Will it get me a date? Nope. Will it get me compliments from strangers? Nope.

So unless I’m already going on a date with a woman, why would I put a ton of effort beyond being presentable for the purposes of attracting women? Even if women were attracted they don’t ask out strangers they see in public.

The two guys I know who do best with women, one dressed horribly, wearing baggy shirts and pants, squared-toe shoes, it was just awkward. Our friend group made fun of him for it for years. He was ripped, 6’1”, stubble, just a chad. I moved away but saw him recently, he wears henleys and jeans when he goes out.

The other guy wears the same outfit every outing. Black v-neck t-shirt, black jeans, black boots, and a combo of a black hat, black sweater, or black jacket. The clothes all fit but it’s very minimalist. He is lean with tattoos and they show on his sleeves/chest. Great bone structure, he has a celebrity lookalike that he actually looks slightly better than.

In any objective sense I dress better than both of them. All my jeans are tailored, I have outfits that coordinate on both color and texture, I get lots of complements on my cologne, etc. I’m still never taking a girl off these guys because one is a straight chad and the other has actor-level good looks.

OP’s advice is great for men to maximize their personal appeal but it ignored that fashion and skincare are accessories to a man’s base appeal.

LOL I’m old enough now to remember when Black guys were considered attractive and trendy when they walked around in baggy jeans, jerseys, headband, and corn rows (circa 2000-2005). Then in the 2010-2015 it was the skinny jeans, dirty Vans, trucker hat type aesthetic. And now the trendy ppl look like they walked out of a Hipster factory or some shit.

This style shit changes up year to year. It’s superficial and stupid as fuck IMO and as long as a person is well groomed I don’t give a flying fuck what their fit is like. I know millionaires and most of them you’d never know from looking at them. It’s usually MLM types and superficial social media types who invest so much into their appearance. I’m surrounded by upper middle class women. Most of them wear spandex, a plain tee, and flip flops or Rothy’s.

People seem pretty butthurt here, but I genuinely agree. Nobody has to put effort into how they look, but yet people are still trying to defend themselves for why they do or don't do it. It's all up to what you want as a person.

I used to be an ugly duckling that nobody really cared about/noticed. Instead of actively changing it, I sulked to myself about my shortcomings. When I finally tried looking and being the best I could be, people suddenly cared about me and liked me a lot more. Presentation is one of the most important things for both men and women when it comes to social success.

Works for me all the time, I usually dress really stylish but I'm not trying to attract girls right now, I'm not single and I don't give a fuck. That said, girls notice expensive items and it immediately changes their perspective.

Also, I'm stylish because I'm stylish, most guys I know have a girl or multiple girls and aren't out trying to impress while at the bank, the grocery store, starbucks, etc.

Because the presentation standard for men is SO LOW, if a young man wears nice clothes and takes care of them (irons his shirts, hangs them up, dry cleans jackets etc) he’s assumed to be gay.

Men underestimate the damaging power of “the ick” - clothes like cargo shorts, ill-fitting tshirts, “dad” type sneakers like New Balance, old white socks pulled up too high, patchy facial hair, sporty sunglasses, etc. that can be an instant turn off. It’s like the fashion equivalent of the joke about how it’s a red flag if a guy doesn’t have a bed frame. Is it the end all be all? Nope. But it’s worth a shot and fashion can be both fun and satisfying (who doesn’t want to feel good about themselves?) I am in no way saying men need to wear designer brands or expensive clothes (cool thrifted pieces would probably get you more points in this day and age since it’s currently trendy), but it is a turn on for a lot of women when men know how to dress themselves in clothes that fit and colors/patterns that match. It shows intention, attention to detail, caring about/for yourself, not being afraid to stand out, etc. and other positive traits that would also hopefully reflect in a relationship as well.

I was traveling yesterday and was in the Chicago O’Hare airport, there were so many facially good looking men who looked TERRIBLE as a “total package” because of their haircuts. Maybe my military background has conditioned me to view short, tapered/faded haircuts as being “presentable” but even other hairstyles look good when the necks are trimmed, the hair is combed and secured properly etc.

I think men have set the bar so low that even a little thought and effort is noticed by women. One Saturday I was out grocery shopping or whatever for the week. I just had on a button down(nothing fancy just something from Target), some dark wash slim fit jeans, boots, some cologne, and…..a fedora?!? 😝 Stopped at a drive thru and the chick at the window says “Damnnnn where you going looking and smelling all good?” I really didn’t even know what to say because the way I was dressed was the norm for me when I go out shopping or whatever. But that interaction turned into all the other women working there coming to the drive thru window asking what I was getting into that day and what cologne I was wearing, etc. Getting women, making friends, being noticed, all of it is a form of seduction. Everyone has a different seduction style. Some have the personality, some have the body or looks, some have status, etc. Your clothes and smell is just another element in “seduction.” I guess what OP is guys should use whatever element of “seduction” they can to win over people. And when you know your own style it becomes natural to you, to the point where you don’t appear to be “trying hard.”

Personally I don't think this is a division of the sexes but rather that some people of both sexes place a lot of value in physical presentation and others don't.

I think the type people that place value in it may equate physical presentation to other aspects of character like ability to provide or sexual viability but I don't personally believe those conclusions to be accurate.

We are brought up with the expectation of finding our own personal style, basically making ourselves into to our own interesting character, because our perception of our gender has been fed to us primarily through the male gaze. We see ourselves as objects of beauty. We are our own personal custom art piece every day. Even if its just going to the gas station, I can see myself through a third person perspective and I am a character, even if its 💫Tired Sweatpants Girl 💫. Men just tend to dress so, basic? I don't think men are used to looking at themselves artfully the way women are, because men are rarely presented as objects of beauty in media and things. I don't think men feel as much of a pressure to be visually interesting. My evidence of this is how female celebrities have to reinvent their look every 2 years while male celebrities are typically recognized through their work alone and thats enough. I want to see you have a personality and you care about the way you look in a thoughtful and artful way. Even if its, country guy with wranglers, beat up hat, and a carhart shirt thats a character and that knowing who you are is much more attractive than wearing some name brand bland nothing. I don't think men have the same concept women do when it comes to building a character for themself to present as. Men have a chance to express themselves and most of them choose to just, not, then wonder why they aren't attracting interest. I have seen guys with unique, maybe even jarring facial features that could have thrown their hands up and said welp I'm ugly but they looked at themselves artfully and own their shit and you know what those weird features all of a sudden are stunning and unique. I hope I'm making sense here.

As a man, the number one reason why I'm happy that I'm not a woman in the social norms to "look good".

As a woman, you are not, or should not be, expected to give me your time if you don't like my style.

I'm not into showbiz, so my references are years old, a few years ago I heard Alicia Keys talking about her not wearing makeup. She looked less stereotypically attractive, yet her explanation was amazing (can't remember what it was).

And remember "poor presentation in public" is subjective

I have a need to match colors. and I'm not talking about the way most men match "blue" and it could be any shade or hue of blue/turquoise/blue-green. I mean you could get as specific as something like dark pastel lavender and I would have a hat, top, bottom, and shoes in that color. It's not just an outfit that looks like you didn't blindly pick it out either, I comb my facial hair and run a product through it, never leave the house without a (1 single) swipe of deodorant under each armpit and a spritz (0.5 seconds of holding down the button) of cologne on one wrist that you rub into the other.

Does that sound like a lot? maybe, if you don't have a routine before going out. But I keep all of my deodorant/cologne/hair product in a tray i got specifically for them by my desktop near my bedroom door, and my closet is admittedly more organized than most people.

You'd probably make fun of me because i can't roll out of my gaming chair into my car, but "getting ready" from sweatpants and a deadpool t-shirt takes just a bit over 3 minutes. i also don't go out without receiving a compliment. It's gotten to the point of becoming a bit of an inside joke between me and my gf, because she waits for it to happen to shoot me a look of playful daggers, and i get to smirk like a mfer lmao.

Legit, half the men I know won’t even trim the beard or do more than a 5 minute shower effort, let alone style themselves outside of basketball shorts or jeans and a tee 😂 for some reason even unfashionable men have nice shoes. Shoes are where men tend to focus?

Height and face matter way more than how muscular or well dressed you are. Clothing choice isn't going to hide the fact a guy is 6'4" or has a chiseled jawline. Women just have more access to attractive guys + lower libidos so their standards are inflated.
