Why are so many men like this when it comes to well meaning women trying to help? I can remember vividly times in my life I’ve offered gentle suggestions to a man dealing with something and they get so snippy and curt.

They're insulted that an inferior specimen (ie woman) knows something they don't and dared offer her knowledge

Why are so many men like this when it comes to well meaning women trying to help?
Because they view women and girls as inferior and taking advice from something inferior is offensive to them.
A #1 vetting strategy could be on how well he takes your advice or something similar.
I remember when I was a teenager I was sleeping over my aunts house and her husband got drunk. She told him (in a normal way not bossy) to shut the door because there were bugs getting in the house and he went on a 20 minute rant about how a "woman is not going to tell him what to do" and other sexist stuff I dont exactly remember. But it stuck in my mind that when a guy wont take advice or do a simple thing a woman asks of them then they probably view women as inferior, they dont want to do something someone whos inferior told them to.

Actually it also reminds me of my dad ALWAYS being so fucking snippy to my mum when she’s literally giving suggestions in the most gentle way possible. He always explodes and acts like she’s so annoying when she’s just trying to help. He’s so impatient with her and clearly just finds her annoying at times. He also tries to do this with me but I set him straight so not as much or he’ll apologise after. My mum just takes it so :/

Oh my godddd this reminds me of when I tried to comfort my ex because he didn’t have a job (ew I know) and he basically told me to shut up and stop emasculating him ... after that I wasn’t very sympathetic or overly sweet to him no matter his problems and guess what ... he complained I wasn’t ‘nice’ to him anymore 😂

It's so dumb. My brother likes to be super dramatic about problems/illnesses but he started to resent me for responding to him with sympathy and suggestions. Then he blew up at me big time and I realized what he'd been hiding and stopped talking to him unless necessary. Now he's been trying the last few months to get me to take the bait again and give him some of that sweet sweet sympathy but nope. Door is shut. He made his bed, he can jolly well lie in it.

they don’t want women’s help or children’s help. they don’t even want men’s help. they’d rather drive around lost with veins bursting out of their foreheads for an hour rather than ask some guy for directions.
some of the best dating advice i’ve ever gotten was not to try to help any man. i don’t mean not to help them wash the huge rambunctious family dog or pick out a new set of silverware - i mean don’t try to fix their pain, problems at work, platonic relationships, challenge in their hobby, etc. it sounds insane to hear something like this if you’re not very online or something-pilled, i get it. if your male partner starts complaining or venting, the best thing that you could do is listen for a minute and say that you believe in them. then walk off to another room and crochet or code or whatever you do. this is what you’d do with a good guy - for the guy in this post, obviously you just hightail it out of there before he starts beating you and your kids.
because no man wants the help of women and children (and most of the time other men), that is why you proceed with caution when a strange man approaches you in public asking for help. whether it’s for directions or to help find a lost puppy, do not get close to them. yeah, there’s a chance that some guy really does need help. you can give someone advice from a distance without leaning into their car window, following them to another location, or them getting closer and closer and backing you into a corner.
i’ve also picked this up from “the horse’s mouth”. the stand up guys who i know have some sort of a “policy” in which they don’t complain to their girlfriends or beg them for help. they say that their girlfriend already had a hard day at work not being taken seriously, forced to care for a family member, sexually harassed in the street. e.g. they’d say to a woman, “i got fired today. i’m very worried, but i’m going to get another job soon,” rather than bust out crying for 2 hours that they’ve gotten fired (and go kyle on the drywall). they strive to be a source of light and positivity in her life rather than yet another thing to worry about. it sounds like a double standard, right? no, they know to take the frustration out at the gym or with a therapist and occasionally vent to friends rather than force the girlfriend to be a therapist. so no, they’re not “forced to not display emotions”. they’re just aware that there’s no point in a relationship that only takes and never gives.

Hell, I once got snapped at just for saying, "I'm good, how are you?" in response to a male friend who'd just asked me how I was. His excuse? His tummy felt bad, and so he didn't like people asking him how he was. Then...maybe don't ask other people how they are? Because they will answer that question.
[–]lightcobaltblueFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They feel emasculated when someone tries to help. It basically means "you can't do it" to them.
In my experience it's better to acknowledge their struggle and tell them you trust them to solve the problem.
But yes, their ego is fragile. Some men may not feel angry but maybe just bad and powerless... Some are maybe not as affected by this, I don't know.

Right? I don't know what women are expecting from posts like this. Clearly since this is a "one time thing" according to her, she's not going to leave him over it. If majority of the people agree he's the asshole, will she show it to him and be like see the internet says youre an asshole? Or is she so verbally abused on the daily that she genuinely can't tell the difference?
[–]ijustcantwithitFDS Newbie 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No. I’ve learned that I need to make a list. Because I excused all the “one time things”. Now I make a list of oh it was just this and just that so I can see with clarity what’s going on. I plan to write the good stuff down to because I have a history with Lvm who aren’t bad to me but we never do anything good either.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. Making a list is a great idea even after you've broken up with an lvm and can't let go of what ifs, remembering the good times, wondering if you made a mistake or even considering reconciliation. I made a list after I went through this phase after my breakup. The list kept getting longer and longer, and I had to ask myself, even with all the good things, is putting up with all these bad things worth it? The answer was never ever again. That completely put the brakes on my fantasizing.

This edit is just is so shocking. This kind of emotional abuse the kid experienced doesn't get "resolved" just so and disappear as if it never happened, this will stay with the little child, subconsciously. We can only hope that this isn't happening too often, but it is fucked up. She should be praised for showing so much empathy and caring about her parent at such a young age. He could be proud. But instead he chooses to feel "made to feel like a bitch"(wtf?) and not only be angry at his little child, but also hurl some stupid abuse towards her. Evil weakling.

The fact that she would even ask if she was in the wrong here shows this is not just a one-time thing and it is always like this. He yelled and swore at a very young child who was being kind, and then yelled insults and slurs at his wife. Literally any response, up to and including slapping him across the face for speaking to you and your child like that, would have been justified.
(Not that I think she should instigate violence against such an obviously abusive man. That would have ended badly. I'm just saying it would have been justified. Some words are fightin' words.)

I don’t know why I didn’t think about it this way but you’re absolutely right. before that I was perhaps thinking this could’ve been a one-time incident, but this poor woman has clearly been conditioned into putting up with this man’s awful behaviour to the point where SHE is asking people where SHE went wrong to piss him off despite doing absolutely nothing wrong. Plus their 6 year old heard him call her a "stupid bitch" and watched their mom just take it. Normalizing this behavior in men to their 6 year old daughter. Nice. This guy clearly is sexist, got offended at the idea of taking advice from a 6 year old girl and lashed out. Then got mad and called his wife a stupid bitch because she said he couldnt handle pain well. Her even excusing it to her daughter is normalizing this behavior to her.

THIS. I get that there are lots of dynamics when there’s an abuser in the household but it has to be terrifying for a child to hear their father yell at their mother, and no one in this situation seems to consider that.
[–]WatzooFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Please be careful with this mindset. In custody court, it can devolve into the mother being punished for staying by having her child taken away ... and placed full time with the abuser.
Men are 100% responsible for the choices they make and the harm those choice cause others. Always.
[–]WorkaholicPartyFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I understand what you mean, I appreciate it and I agree to a general extent but there are limits to everything. Believe me, I know my way around courts. My father was horribly abusive, particularly to me and then my mother, and I knew my mother wasn't to blame. She tried to shield me as much as possible and her margin of action was very small so I was not saying this with a heartless mindset. I'm not blaming women who are abused for the abuse happening to their children. I've lived in women's shelters, I volunteer at them, I've been homeless at 15, in foster care, and on.
The man is the main culprit but there are too many moms who force their little daughters, and I'm talking 6-7 yo so as young as the original OP's, to take care of the house because the father "doesn't know his way" and the mom has to stay away for a few days to visit her family or something.
This is a 6yo, she literally doesn't stand any chance to have a happy childhood with such a weak and pick-me mother who would rather coddle the fee-fees of her manchild than to soothe and protect her innocent blameless little girl. The way this woman replied and edited her post confirms that her daughter being the actual child here is not even on her radar and that is unforgivable for me.
This kid will need a therapy trust, let alone a college fund to rebuild herself. The least this woman can do is talk to her child in private and protect her from some of the abuse, teaching her what is right and what is wrong. Instead, she's defending her husband and wondering if she's at fault despite the overpouring of comments rightfully alarming her of the danger she and her daughters are in. Even if you have to coddle your husband, your kids should always come first.

Mom is in a catch 22 now. Bad for daughter if she stays, bad for daughter if she leaves. 🤷🏼♀️ I know we all have a lot of resistance to the the idea of being trapped, but this is what that looks like for mothers in the US, Canada, and much of Europe.
[–]RecordingImportant94FDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Yep. People should avoid judgements of mothers when they haven’t been in a domestic abuse situation and have no experience of the court system. Violence and abuse towards the mother doesn’t count as abuse towards the child where I am, so despite MRAs claiming that fathers have no rights in regards to their children and custody this is not the case, they will get some custody unless the mother has evidence of abuse of the children and in many places 50/50 is the starting point and preferred by the courts, supposedly for the children’s welfare.
I’m in this situation, my ex has almost 50/50 custody of our daughter and he neglects her. She loves the fact daddy lets her sit on an iPad for hours upon hours and feeds her junk food, doesn’t make her wash or do her teeth, so I’m playing a game of catch up when she’s with me and buying two lots of products that she needs as he won’t purchase them himself and it’s the only way I can make any headway towards her not coming back to me in an awful condition.
It was better to leave than to stay for my sake, but my child now has to suffer by being alone with him (even if she is too young to comprehend neglect yet) He now emotional abuses and manipulates her to try and get at me, she was protected from this and the physical neglect when we were together and I was the sole caregiver. Once you realise you’re in an abusive situation with a child involved it is very very difficult to make the best judgement for their welfare. I do sometimes question whether I should have waited until she was older to leave to protect her.
[–]WatzooFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I agree except ... mothers who have and assert evidence of abuse of the children are more likely to lose custody of their children. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/social-issues/a-gendered-trap-when-mothers-allege-child-abuse-by-fathers-the-mothers-often-lose-custody-study-shows/2019/07/28/8f811220-af1d-11e9-bc5c-e73b603e7f38_story.html
So that will not help her.
[–]RecordingImportant94FDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I didn’t even bother trying to bring evidence against him for this reason. I know one person who had enough to get her kids away from her ex initially, but he just kept going back to court, financially crippling her, until he was allowed access. Even though the kids didn’t want to see him as they were rightly scared of him. The courts just serve to abuse women further in many cases.

Meanwhile I was never like this before him, I only became that way because of the love bombing and discard phases that made me chase after him and start losing myself.

I keep hearing about it here and I have the same experience.
I was at a couple's therapy with my ex multiple times and the woman kept telling me to communicate better when I complained that he never tries to be understanding.
The thing is - I was already so exhausted with my communication! He was the kind of a guy that would never listen to me (same when he was talking to/calling his mother, always typing stupid crap on facebook and just answering "Yes. Uh-huh. Okay. Sure. That's nice."), he would just keep repeating the same sentence while talking to me (how much I HATE this), would ignore my boundaries (I told him not to follow me - he keeps walking 3m behind me. I told him to leave me alone - he's knocking at my door in literally 5 seconds).
And the woman was making me feel f-ing crazy for implying that I am not. communicating. enough.

I finally left an abusive relationship after waking up to how my ex was treating me in front of his daughters. I stayed years too long because I put up with it and rationalized it, but it took him shamelessly doing it in front of them that made me realize that I didn't want them to grow up thinking this was normal. He wasn't talking to them that way, just me. Leaving abusive relationships is hard. I hope this mom leaves soon because this is disgusting and her daughter deserves to be somewhere safe and loved.

Dude sounds like a narcissist.
Gets mad at a 6 yo girl giving him advice.
Gets mad at wife for trying to calm down daughter, who is crying because daddy just cussed and yelled at a 6 yo.
Tries to make wife feel like the whole thing was her fault, shifting the blame of his dispicable behaviour to someone else.
Also... Male lurkers... YOU ABSOLUTELY ARE A WEAK BITCH IF YOU CAN'T KEEP YOUR COOL JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE IN PAIN AND WANT TO HURT OTHERS AROUND YOU (either emotionally or physically). Women are EXPECTED to be polite through all their pain even though period cramps can be as strong as heart attacks. Men will even stay mad at us if we said something that slightly offended them WHILE WE WERE IN GOD DAMN LABOR.
So men, if we don't get to be absolute bitches while we are in excruciating pain, you don't get to YELL AT A 6 YO AND CALL YOUR WIFE A BITCH over a bit of shoulder discomfort.
With all the videos I've seen of men not even being able to handle the first setting on period/birth emulators... Yea, men are absolute ballsacks when it comes to pain. I don't get why "pussy" is used to refer to someone who is weak or cowardly when the people who have them have such a high pain tolerance and are often forced to be courageous.

That’s a reason for divorce in my eyes. Yelling at a 6 year old? Calling me out of my name? Feeling threatened in your masculinity by me trying to explain your assholery away (which I would never do in the first place)... every one of these instances is a reason to divorce by itself.

I'll repeat again that women are just not in touch with our anger and it's deliberate that we're raised like that. She doesn't know what angry is. She says "I was livid". You were NOT FUCKING LIVID, random lady. You haven't SEEN livid from yourself or any other woman in your goddamn blind fucking lifetime. Someone who is livid doesn't go around saying "uwuuuu my husband is aggressive and disgusting towards our small child. He was not satisfied with my degree of excusing him. What do I doooo? He doesn't always humiliate my baby girl. It was just this one tiiiiime, you guysss. I just need to coMmuNiCate. He doesn't know not to call us stupid bitches you guuuuuyss youuu guuuuyss you guuuuyss."
And yes, I said "us" because make no mistake, he meant the child too. He doesn't have to say it.
I HATE weak insecure men like him. Just her saying that he can't take pain well so she could make her little girl feel better made him feel so emasculated. If this society INSISTS on using the word bitch, that's who it should be aimed at. The word bitch needs to be redefined to mean males like him.

Bad news. I grew up with a father figure in the house like this. I never knew what side of the bed he’d wake up on, whether he’d be in his funny guy mood or in his slam doors, punch walls mood. Anything would set him off.
I wound up developing PTSD and having a very freeze/fawn response that doesn’t bode well around predatory personalities. These parents are going to make their kid a magnet for abusive types in her future.
That poor kid’s gonna need therapy if he doesn’t stop.

this. my mum was in a highly emotionally abusive marriage with my dad, and they eventually went through a divorce which was finalised when I was 20, so two years ago. during the divorce I had found my first boyfriend who was highly controlling and manipulative just like my dad. after the relationship ended, I had a deep talk with a friend about relationships in which he spoke about his previous relationship of four years. when I tell you I was absolutely MINDBLOWN when he said they never shouted at each other and they rarely argued. As someone who grew up with a father like this, the best the mother could ever do for that little girl is to cut her father off entirely. If he doesn't have enough empathy to understand how a six year old feels, then he's severely lacking the mental capacity to care for a child. My mom had neck and back surgery after a severe car accident when I was young and she would have never treated me like that, despite being in probably an equal or higher level of pain as this so-called "man".

Reminds me of my mother. She’d always date guys who yelled at me, insulted me, threatened to kick me out, etc, when I was growing up. One of her boyfriends hit me when I was 16.
I feel sad for this little girl, the impact from emotional abuse like that can last a lifetime. I hope she ends up alright and that woman leaves him so her daughter isn’t subjected to that for even longer. The daughter was being empathetic and caring, she doesn’t deserve that. Nobody should yell at a child like that.
It makes me sick that some women stay in relationships with men who are abusive to their children. I’ve seen it often though, unfortunately. Not only with my own mother but friends mothers as well.☹️

understandable. but so much so you had to comment three times? nevertheless I will explain. it is a reference to Atlanta, and the point of that picture was that the man in this picture, who said he is a 35 year old white man, is clearly not a 35 year old white man. and I am neither a man, white or 35. another reason I had chosen this name is because someone from my University had actually found me on Reddit with my old account, and immediately worked out it was me because of how much my username reminded him of me, so I wanted my next username to be something that completely throws people off. hope that clears things up :)
