This is exactly what my husband said to me while I was pregnant (spring to early winter 2019). He did nothing “extra” while I was pregnant, did not help me on days I was feeling worse, dismissed me whenever I voiced my own view/argument. I didn’t think that was how it was going to be once I was pregnant but that’s the situation I found myself in. My advice: walk away now. I made excuses for my spouse and told myself he would change but as of November 2021, I am the single mother of a two year old with sole custody due to domestic violence. It’s so easy to make excuses for him, but look at the facts of the behaviours and know that he will not be in the teammate you need nor is he the role model you want for your child.

Genuine question: is there a way for men to show their true self before marriage? A real fear of mine is marrying a man who was really nice at the bf-gf stage up until marriage, but gets worse as the marriage progresses.

Having a partner like this makes life very, very difficult. I raised two kids with a partner like this (and worse- frankly) who would constantly berate me and call me lazy. He also would makes jokes about burying me in a shallow grave where noeone would ever find me. It slowly- but surely- escalates into more severe abuse and trauma. This will NOT get better for her.

I stayed for YEARS because- frankly- my religious upbringing programmed me that ‘God doesn’t like divorces’ and so i stayed. I stayed until he almost killed me multiple times. I was so fortunate to get away and now have- literally- an incredibly successful career and incredibly successful grown adult kids. We were very lucky that he died but without his death i would have been dealing with that asshole for my entire life.

My heart goes out to this woman and the dismay she must feel. She is fortunate to have a supportive mom, my parents told that it would be better if ‘ i was a better cook’. Pffft. I am literally one of the most successful women in my community. Fuck him and FUCK the system that makes her feel like this is the best that she can hope for.

I hope she gets out sooner rather than later.

I experienced similar except my child’s father and I didn’t officially commit to one another and for a good reason. Years ago, when our child was around 2 or 3 he told me (despite me raising our child alone and working full time) it was my job to supply clothes for her and such for when she spent the weekends with him and this was after I asked him to chip in a little so I didn’t have to lug-around such a heavy diaper bag. I was exhausted and needed him to pull in equal-weight.

He ended up assaulting me twice and the second time around I gathered the courage to file a police report. He hasn’t seen our child in 5 years.

The lesson learned was men like him never change. They were conditioned as children that women are second class citizens and should always be dominated and controlled.

1- Pregnancy is a bitch. It was hell for me. Both my pregnancies I had morning sickness all the way through, could barely keep anything down, even water. The second Pregnancy a tendon in my hips kept rolling around and make walking so painful (and 2 years later, it still happens every now and then). I bounced back quickly after both c sections, because pregnancy was worse than having a baby pulled out of my stomach and 40 staples in after.

So a man HAS to be willing to see that things ARE going to change during pregnancy that might go back to usual afterwards. My morning sickness was from practically day one, it told me I was pregnant before at home pregnancy tests did. I was also heavily depressed the first time.

2- My husband was actually kind of similar to this idiot during my first pregnancy. Since I was pregnant, he made me the default driver so he could vape as much weed as possible. Back then he also said the worst things when he was angry. One time, we were hours away from home and he berated me so bad for not being able to find a parking spot in a huge ass city to get food... this was before I found out I have adhd, which is made worse by periods and pregnancy... that I had to pull over because I was crying so hard. Told him I could not drive anymore, that he has to drive if he's going to be such an ass about it. He told me that if I get out of the car, I better start walking to the nearest bus stop because he won't get out. I got out, walked over to the passenger side, and stood there. He yelled at me to get away from his car because I made him look suspicious. So I just started walking away. He knew I was already very depressed. He ended up honking and calling me back when I was 2 blocks away.

He is a completely different person now though. He's been able to reign in his ocd and his mommy issues. Now we are fairly equal in what we do for each other, and he's very patient with my adhd brain and newlyfound autism. How did he change? Well, he kept treating me like shit so I left. For almost 24 hours I vanished on him, with our 4 mo firstborn, without contact with him or an explanation.

I would have fully left if my mom didn't remind me on accident that she was far worse than him, and she would hold this over my head as a reason I could never look for a partner and to mistreat my baby. So I ended up calling him. In the end I decided to come back.

And he fully admitted he thought he could do anything to me because he "thought you were my ride-or-die!" And I told him that I AM his ride or die, but that doesn't mean he gets to treat me like trash and expect me to treat him like a king. And it turned out I was pregnant with my second before I ever left the house... woo.

This guy is likely going to lose her and his child. I only came back because I had nowhere safe to go.

3- If that is how he treats the person he loves... well if I were her I would give him a taste back. "No, I'm not going to turn out the lights because YOU were the one who used them. Turn them off when you leave the room, I'm not doing extra because you are too lazy to turn them off after you are done."

Or maybe "oh dang. Forgot to make you coffee! Guess you have to make it yourself!" And so on.
