The whole article is infuriating. I'm a 50/50 dad, and the road to getting that was a rough one.

Thankfully, it wasn't an expensive ride through the court system; just the threat of it was enough. She was always a horrible mother to the children during our marriage. Very neglectful, and uncaring. When she decided to play hide-the-sausage with one of our friends, and ended our marriage she initially told me that she wanted full custody of the kids and I could have them, "whenever." In essence, she wanted me as a free and glorified babysitter instead of a father.

For the first few weeks of the separation, the kids' lives were in chaos. They wouldn't know who was picking them up from school, where they were sleeping that night...and I didn't until the day she wanted me to pick them up. I asked for a schedule but I guess that was stalking or or something because she refused to let me know when she would be working and I would have to take the kids.

So, I took matters in my own hands and when I got the kids home from school, I called her up and said, "Look, the kids are staying with me until you figure shit out. So, here are your choices: I get them full time, you go play like you're 18 again and fuck every guy in town that you see, or you step up, and we split 50/50. The only other way is that we go to court and let the courts decide out of the two of us who is the most fit parent. If you can't agree to that, then they will be here with me."

After a few days of moping and crying from the mother she finally called and said, "What am I supposed to do about a babysitter?" I told her that it was her problem. She made the mess, so she had to figure out her own shit. I offered to be there for the kids if they needed me when they were with her.

She is still a horrible mother to them. Not abusive; just towing the line for what a "care-provider" does: giving them food, clothes, shelter. But they live without structure or discipline in her house which I see on their faces when they come through the door on Mondays. She wonders why our son is so disruptive, and why the teachers complain about her behaviour. The teachers have approached me too, and I said, "Just watch the pattern. Look at his good weeks versus his bad weeks, and get back to me when you notice." Sure enough, a few weeks later I'm told, "He's so different when he's with you! There are moments, but we can correct them."

What's really heartbreaking as a father is there's nothing I can do about it. Not without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars, not to mention the days loss of work, battling it out in the courts, only to find that she's manipulated the courts enough (which she is good at doing...she fooled a psychologist when she was 14 into thinking that she was coping with her father's death in a normal way...which she wasn't, she confessed that she really didn't care about his death, sure she was sad, but she got over it in days after he passed; only once in our relationship did she ever visit her father's grave, and that was because I insisted on going and paying my respects to him). My lawyer even told me, "You would probably save money by letting it run its course, and going through psychiatrists when they finally decide to stay with you full time."

It's heartbreaking being a 50/50 dad. They are with her for Father's day, and in the 6 years we've been separated, not once did they call. I, too, have cried my eyes out walking past their bedrooms, and wondered were they sleeping soundly in their own beds and having pleasant dreams.

...in NY State, back in 1997, I got half custody, immediately, so that my sons, ages 11, 9 and 6 at the time, would spend one week at my house then one week at hers.

Eventually I got full custody of all three: the oldest first when he was 12, and the others came when they hit 13.

In a way I feel bad for their mother... But then, when I think through all the Hell that she put us all through, for no other reason than selfishness, I guess you reap what you sow. (Sometimes. I know other men out there weren't as lucky.)

I'm a woman, who raised my son, pretty much by myself until my son was 11. My ex -husband and I just didn't work out as spouses, so we split but are still friends today. It was my son's desire to live with Dad for various reasons (money, getting closer, friends). I respected that and thought about it logically and talked to my son and share parenting with my ex-husband. I pay child support and insurance and I get him whenever I want. As a parent we must put our selfish needs aside and make sacrifices if need be, the best we can, to ensure our children grow up healthy, happy, and morally sound.

My dad is a divorce lawyer and I went to watch 1 day of one of the more interesting trials where the parents were in different states and custody had to be set and the mother was a huge bitch and everyone was made to see that. In the end she won and 2 of the jurors when asked why they decided that was said " she really wasn't that bad of a mother" meaning it was just assumed mom would have the children unless dad was super fucked up since the kids were so young. The lady was a huge bitch towards her husband on the stand on got caught saying different facts for previous hearings more than a dozen times. But no children should be with the mother when they are young right?

My ex and I divorced last year after 14 yrs of marriage. We share a 12 year old son. We don't do child support or visitation, we just both split expenses and do our share to take care of him as equally as possible. The better he (my ex) and I get along the happier our son is, that's what matters most. I don't understand why a mother would want to keep a child away from a father that wants to be an active part of their life. I think my ex is a way better mother than me most of the time. The mother of my children: Falling down drunk, depressed, no job, never involved, dangerous to the kids and herself. Needs that child support to support herself and her vices.

Me: Responsible, financially set, caring and involved father.

As a father if this was my situation there would be no 50/50. There would be no way I would make them change schools and back just to accommodate me or my ex. This is where you two need to act like the adults you're suppose to be. One could have for the school year the other could take for the summer. I was lucky enough that my daughters mother just sign her rights over to me. I didn't have to go to court. Her mother knew she would never win anyway, and I always maintained that I was simply seeking custody for the sake of our daughter, that I had no intention of "taking her" from her. I just needed to be the provider, the protector, the functioning parent. As much as I do not like my daughters mother, it's still my daughters mother so I NEVER speak badly of her, never air out problems in front of my daughter. My daughter gets to see her mother quite often, even though I don't have to let her. It's not my daughters fault her mom can't get her life right, even though my daughter is 9 now. I just take every day in stride, see how her mom is doing in life and that is how I decide how and when my daughter sees her mom. Her mom is supposed to pay child support, but doesn't have money so I don't bother to go after her. Some people say I should, but she has a younger child (not from me) to which she had custody of and I fear I would take what little money she does have out of that child's mouth. I'm doing fine without her finances, so why battle that? I didn't have a kid to gain more money. I just want my daughter to be happy, and decide how she feels about her mother when she is able to understand why her mom was away all the time. I don't know if I'm doing it right, but my daughter is very happy and still knows she has 2 parents who love her.

This actually makes me angry. My mother is bipolar and my parents divorced when i was 5 and my sister 3. My father tried to get custody several times and it was traumatic for my sister and I. My father was farrr more capable of taking care of us as my mother laid in bed all day and had a string of strangers and shitty boyfriends coming through the house without going into to much detail. I was afriad to leave her because I knew she was unstable and worried what would happen to her if we left. My sister didnt want to leave me, so when I had some creepy custody consular ask me point blank where I felt more at home I didn't know what to say. Long story short the consular told the court I wanted to stay with my mother, I was maybe 10, I had no idea what was in my best interest. The court gave custody to my mother because of this prejudice when my father was clearly more capable of providing a stable environment. Im doing fine at 26 now, but I deal with a lot of aniexty and depression that may have been lessened growing up in a more stable home. Fathers deserve to be givin a fair shot in these matters and the idea that a mother is always a better parent is total bullshit and completely unfair to men trying to win custody of their children for good reason.

Trust me the kids are never "crying out for mommy." They are most likely enjoying their time with their father. That doesn't mean they don't enjoy time with their mother. When they're with their mother, they will enjoy being with you.

Despite what a controlling mother might think, childern love BOTH their parents, especially if both their parents are kind and caring. I'm sure the father enjoys having the children over every other week.

One of my best friends is in a 50/50 relationship lile this. Her parents split because of disagreements, but they are ADULTS. They still talk to each other, and my friend loves both her parents.

It's this shit bias that almost made my father lose custody of my little brother. I was old enough to choose but my brother was not and the judge did everything in my mother's favor which pissed me off. She was abusive, she beat me unconscious at least twice a week and the judge was just going to hand my little brother over to her because he didn't believe me that she was that bad.

He had no choice but to revoke her rights to custody when she got caught hiring a hitman to kill my father and I. It should NEVER have to be such an extreme for a father to have rights to his kids. The kids suffer greatly under this bias and it needs to fucking stop.

Oh for fuck's sake. My mother fought very hard to keep me away from my dad. I spent the majority of my life swaddled and sheltered, and any attempts at trying to connect with him and/or other paternal figures was only met with harsh punishment via wooden cooking spoons and nights of her crying and yelling at me for 'betraying' her.

Raising a child alone is ok if that's what it comes down to, but don't penalize your child's mental/emotional growth by keeping them away from their other parent (assuming the parent isn't a criminal or insane), it's not a fucking coincidence evolution asked for a woman and man to have a child together.

This is the only thing regularly infuriating that I experience with my ex. I get my kids every other weekends, plus occasional Wednesday evenings as she allows me since it's not in our paperwork, rotating holidays, and 2 weeks of vacation each year. After those vacations, which it seems is always a struggle for me to setup, she's always halfway to tears saying things like "omg I miss my babies so much, you don't even know!" and my response is always "you know, I don't see them for a week straight twice a month right?" At which point she just rolls her eyes.

Honestly I have to blame most judges. I had the same issue with my daughter and before the hearing began my lawyer was telling me if we get these X judges we will lose, no matter what we said. My lawyer caught her in lies and in stupid comments and it didn't matter. Ended up watching my kid moving 200 miles away. I used to have unlimited access to my kid whenever I choose before the hearing, now I get a total of 70 days a year, which are equally a headache since her entire family still lives in my area. Always fun being that guy that has to tell everyone else, sorry you can't see her on my time, even though it's the only time you get to see her too.
