This is one issue I can't seem to stand behind. For two main reasons:

Women did fight in the war albeit not to the magnitude that they suggest. Certainly there were no front line troops in the American Army that were female. However, many armies and irregulars did employ female fighters. Although EA and Co. have been doing this more and more (see below).
Battlefield has of late been straying further from accurate history. For example the weaponry and frequency of armored units in BF1. The Germans only ever fielded a handful of their own tanks, for example.

I, personally, find this an argument that is less than helpful to argue as a gamer and even less so as a men's rights issue.

Depends on what we're talking about. For US forces, there weren't many women that saw actual combat unless a position was over ran or a ship attacked (we did have 150,000 WAACs serving along side their male counterparts which shouldn't be discounted). For the Soviets, etc, they had quite a few women in actual combat (mostly as snipers):

You could argue the game itself erases the sacrifice made by turning it into a videogame where the whole war is turned into getting kills for digital points. Battlefield has never been a reenactment like game, the era it takes place in is just that, a time period for players to experience different weapons, vehicles, militaries, and maps.

Its a game, how many people play video games to pay their respects to the men who died in the wars they take place in.

I've been playing battlefield for at least 6 years, it isn't supposed to be realistic, or super authentic, there are other games who do just that though, different genres though battlefield is an FPS, you get kills, do badass things, and get points. Games like Post Scriptum are MilSims, which focus more on being realistic and historically accurate.

I usually choose female characters when they're available, so don't really care about that, but it always irks me when there's blatant attempts at social engineering in a video game . . . have the female characters but why have the cover and main character in a WW2 themed game? There were plenty of women operating behind enemy lines in the resistance against the Nazis as spies and taking part in insurgencies like destroying train lines and ambushes. Let people have their escapism and pretend to be whatever character they want to be in a system of fun game rules. There were a lot of female Soviet soldiers, and officers. Towards the end of BBC's documentary "The World at War" they interviewed a female veteran who had a decent rank. I do not know if they were conscripted however.

I looked more into this.

Reading 6 far cry 5 more negative reviews, they did mention the politics, in maybe a few sentences. That was it. It didn't seem to actually matter that much to their score. What they did mention was that the setting felt uninspired and boring.

Same with Wolfenstein, most of the reviews I read (I read 4 reviews, randomly picked highly praised reviews) didn't mention the setting that much except saying it was fun and rich with texture and great dialogue.

This guy very very clearly cherry picked which reviews he was picking to show. Specifically Polygon is infamous for that stuff, so of course he is gonna show them. But every other review I saw from both did not have the kind of SJW aspects he was talking about. Some said that Far Cry 5's story felt unfinished and bare bones, and it really did. That was about it. I have played Far Cry 5 and Wolfenstein 2, wolfenstein is just a damn better game in nearly every way. It was polished, it had a fun story and setting and ridiculously interesting characters. Far Cry 5 felt wonky and stupid in comparison, and especially felt unpolished. It had little to no real solid structure. They put this interesting setting and then didn't really go into it at all, the enemies were just nameless faces with redneck costumes on.

This video is just misleading. Actually read some of the reviews yourself. A very small amount of progressive reviewers do not mean every reviewer is like that.

This is actually and genuinely insulting to men that fought and paid the ultimate price for literally our freedom.

There were women in the trenches in WW2, but almost never as soldiers. They were being shot at, sure, but they weren't doing the shooting. When they were, they were special units like snipers or special bombing groups or spy work behind enemy lines. They were taught to use guns, but they were always the first to be evacuated if shit hit the fan and kept out of direct combat as much as possible. I do not want to downplay the importance of the work women did during WW2, but it's disgusting to rewrite history like that.

TL;DR there were some isolated cases of female combatants, but the number of female conscripts acting as cannon-fodder in the kind of frontline combat that these games usually show were nil.

I would've been fine with it if they added women properly.

Women did fight in WW2 but only from certain countries and in limited number. For example Russia employed women in battle, one of the greatest snipers of all time was a Russian woman during WW2. British women simply DID NOT fight in WW2.

However, as others have stated they're just slamming women in (into every faction) inaccurately and they're presenting it as if it is accurate.

Edit: So I would be totally okay if there were women in the game, just put them where they really existed; with their respective country and in the roles they really held.

Edit 2: Or just make it an "alt-history" game

And likewise, if you don't like the direction the developers are going with it, stop being a pussy by relegating your arguments to some easily picked apart grievances about historical accuracy, and just keep it real: Female death machines with bionic arms, blue face paint, psychedelic skinned firearms and teddy bears strapped to tanks is fucking lame. It's fucking wack, period.

And the developers need to quit with these SJW platitudes and the claims of it being "their version" of WW2. Their motivation is purely to widen the demographic of their consumer base, in order to increase revenue, grow the company and expand the brand, by pandering to as wide an audience as possible. They don't give a fuck about your "sense of immersion". They're trying to maximize a profit.

Christ, it's a good setting for having the background to world war two and the subsequent cold war, you can have plot there and so on that isn't just "Nazi bad, shoot nazi.", and you've even got "diversity" built right in to the scenario because of the international brigades from dozens of countries turning up to back their respective sides.

As a woman, I find this shameful. It degrades the noble actions of heroic men. My grandfather was in WW2. He sometimes tells us about his time in Europe. He doesn't talk much about it. It is deeply disrespectful to the men who made enormous sacrifices based on their principles. I think there is a sort of popular narrative that is influenced by movies, games, and books. We absorb stories that affect how we view our history and our identity. We need stories of heroes.

It also degrades women. Women did important work. Their work was necessary, and women had their own struggles and private victories. They kept the home front. But women did not die gruesomely, lose limbs, and suffer the way our soldiers did in WW2.

In point of fact, Russia, UK, Australia, Poland, and even the French Resistance had women combatants. There were a lot of other countries in WWII than the US.

I’ve thought about this long and hard, especially since I always dismissed it when women talk about ‘their sacrifice’ when talking about the suffragettes or when blacks are talking about slavery. You weren’t there, you didn’t suffer, so don’t act like you did. Now if there are some legitimate reasons that you are suffering today that stem from the same train of thought that live on from that era, that’s completely reasonable and I’m all ears.

But now as a white man this is the first time I’ve really read something that shows how men have suffered as a result of gender. And I agree that there’s still this thinking going around that men are big and strong and are supposed to protect their family, but there’s much less pressure on men nowadays to fill this role than there ever has been. I think this idea will always linger in a way, because we are biologically built bigger, stronger and faster than women and us men definitely have different brains but I think it’s silly and childish to play the victim card now that men today sacrificed anything for the war.

I think by having a few more women in battlefield could be a good thing if anything, it might welcome more women into the army and bridge the gender gap, and I think it’s foolish to think that anybody really considered battlefield an accurate representation of WWII, and even if it was all men I don’t think it would give people more respect to the male gender.

I’m all for men’s rights and gender equality and I’m all ears to anybody who disagrees with me, so please reply to my comment if you disagree and let’s have a genuine discussion instead of downvoting opposing opinions.

They were behind the lines, and worked alone or in small groups helping the various resistance groups around Europe. The biggest difference between then and now, the women and men of the SOE had to pass the same physical and mental tests...

Nobody has an issue with women in games. The problem is when its forced into a game to fill some societal equality check list, regardless of narrative fit. And I actually find it insulting for women to be portrayed in this manner. Not because they have and did something worthy of commending and representing, but because they want to pretend they have and receive the same glorification.

The problem is women being portrayed doing what men do and have done.

The handful of women soldiers that someone mentioned earlier... why not actually make the characters them? Why not make it grounded in historical accuracy? Or is 'women pretending' the best we can come up with? Have women not done anything of any relevance that they have to resort to playing dress ups and pretend? Have the developers not thought at all about the shit fight that women went through during the wars too?

Imagine a level where you're a mother, home alone with four children. No food, no water, hiding in the cellar with nothing but a pistol, a rifle, a handful of bullets and the German army are moving through the town, systematically clearing out every house... The horrific brutality that mother will fight through to protect her children.

Thats reality. Thats historical accuracy. And Im offended that a real woman in a real historical scenario, protecting her family at all costs, is not good enough for todays 'gender equality' generation.

Go fuck yourselves for thinking so little of women. It is an insult to women and what they do.
