You're sort of right, but consider:

Each person's perception of average is limited to the segment of the population that they interact with. Even if they happen to know and acknowledge that they are themself above-average in some way.

But yeah, a college student is thinking of an 'average college student,' and forgetting about the enormous percentage of similarly-aged people who aren't attending college. People in NYC are thinking about the people they pass on the sidewalk or ride the subway with, not factoring in the people in Arkansas or Michigan or Arizona. People working in an Amazon warehouse have a totally different impression of the average person than people working in a lawyer's office. And so on.

Statistics are weird and sometimes not very representative.

Edit: upon further thought it's really just that people can't be mathematically average. Some of the things you mention in your post aren't even averages at all -- you can't have an 'average' amount of education (or you could but it would be a weird fraction of years). There's no such thing as an 'average' job, or even a median job.

When people say an 'average person' they're not actually making a mathematical statement, they're trying to describe someone who is typical or unremarkable, neither very good nor very bad in any respect. It might be that you want to debate the traits that comprise a typical person, which fair enough. But then we come back to what population is actually being considered. Nobody who is dating is actually conversant with the entire pool of non-partnered people, and additionally there are populations that they would not include for practical reasons, like geography or age or socioeconomic class.

The average man is overweight. The average woman is overweight. And the average American is living paycheck to paycheck. Any non overweight person with $200 in disposable income to waste on whatever is above average. The skinny girl you like isn't average, why should she date average?

I wish it were only for "single guys in their 20s and 30s who are overweight, have average jobs, and no college degree." The truth is I have plenty of guy friends in tech and business owners who still cannot find a single date.

On the flip side, I know a guy who is 6'0"+, fit, and makes $100k+ (the top 5 percenter) who has endless scrolling on Hinge and uses a calendar to organize his weekly dates. Women usually message him first, which i find the most unique. If you are not a top man, do not even try.

The stats for single and unmarried women are on a steep incline. Nearly 45% of women are projected to be single and childless by 2030. Also, the number of single moms who have never been married is trending up. About 40% of all babies in the US are now born to mothers who are not married. I wonder why.

The same applies to men. They have no idea who the average woman is either. They see cherry picked manosphere street interviews with drunk chicks in Miami or Instagram influencers posting fake lives for clicks and likes and believe that’s the average woman.

Most people who spend too much time on the Internet don’t actually have a clue how people in the real world operate. It literally breaks their brains.

I think people are typically talking about what is average for their dating pool, not average as a whole. An average man who would be a match for me, and a truly average man would be wildly different people. I’ve been called “below average” during debates on this sub when I would be in the top 10-1% of any metric you put me up against. So men can easily be delusional about what constitutes average as well.

Well its mostly the average women or even below average women does not want the average men.

So they often cant fulfill the standard they so quick to demand of others to fill.

What in lot of ways make both sides slowly rejecting each other or look for short term gains only.

What literally hook up culture and causal dating is in a nut shell.

Why if people carey the same standards of excellence they expect of others naturally everyone would date on there level.

Cause lets be honest fat women that want super fit men they dont even have anything in common cause what it takes to be fit and what it takes to be very over weight.

There no ways hobbies or lifestyle or even anything else they would have in common. Why many demands some people have makes no darn sense if you put any logic behind it.

Why its also so easy to find so many extrame rage bait videos but at the same time many ways society and media and women think they deserve that.

While they dont. Cause in many ways your only worthy of something if your also can carey the same standards.

And men in big ways have learned to compromise for women and put care or put there needs first.

There so many women that are so selfish and in many ways so on antidepressants that they have a massive warped view of how relationships and the world realy works. What actually in many ways hurts women in big ways. Why like single mom households explodeds cause being selfish make that the other side can only be selfless for a x amount of time before they just stop trying.

But thats the problem with always seeing yea self as the price. In time your just a burden no one wants to keep around.

What actual hurts women by there own never ending seeking selfishness and empowerment crusade. That pushes everyone away

I think both men and women can have warped expectations of each other due to social media etc. I know that there are extremely picky women, but I would say they are the minority (at least in my social circle). Most women understand what average is, and many probably believe themselves to be average, too.

No one knows what an average man is. The average man does not exist. Human characteristics are too complex to aggregate them into a single average. You could consider a man of average height, weight, income, or facial attractiveness but it’s not so simple when we consider someone’s total characteristics. The average man does not sit averagely in all categories, he may be very tall and poor, or unattractive but very wealthy. That being said, I do then agree women shouldn’t try to make claims about the average man.

The “average woman” in reality is in her 40s, fat, and has at least 1 child if not 2.

I am a high earning, overweight woman who enjoys a number of hobbies and has a good sense of humor and am a great conversationalist.

I expect that from whoever I'm with. I would not expect more than what I myself can offer.

Why should I care about what the average is across the whole population? In my social circle and workplace, the average man is relatively fit, well educated with a pretty good salary. That's what I expect, and I've had no issues is selecting partners fulfilling this criterion.

I think women in real life are far less shallow than anyone on online spaces, especially this sub, or twitter as a whole (that cesspool).

Why should women care that they aren’t attracted to most men? Because it’s shallow and superficial. Most IRL women care about personality more than looks, but online women are trying to spread hypergamy and hyper-individualism, trying to make other women shallow. Attraction is looks based, at first, and then once you get to know them, then personality comes into play. However, some women only seem to care about looks only, and will bypass a 6/10 looks, even if his personality would match hers (be a 9 or 10/10). Most men find most women attractive, then we sort through for personality matches; this methodology should be true for both genders, because it is what we should expect to see in a equitable and equal dating culture, which the West on the macro largely is.

So, personally, if you find most people of your preferred gender unattractive, you need to check yourself for inflated physical standards and/or unrealistic expectations.

I say all of this as an objectively average man in a LTR…

Women in general have a decent idea of what an average guy is. Women who are seeking attention online for one reason or another have no motive to display that they have an understanding of what an average man is. They have motive to dramatise their presence online for more views and attention.

Women looking for attention online do not represent themselves as typical or average women. Using them as a measure to gage women in general won't give you a clear picture of average women out and about in the real world.

I mean…that literally is what I, and the women I know, consider to be an average man. Most of my friends date men similar levels of attractiveness to them, men that definitely are not 6’ or fit, and men that make around the median income (or less). Would you not consider these men average?

I only have one friend that only dates fit men and that’s because she’s literally a fitness freak (like actual bodybuilding)

Why should an average woman settle for an average man? The average man only brings the average woman’s quality of life down. Meaning the average woman is better off single than with an average man who given the chance will still cheat if the opportunity arises. Being average doesn’t automatically make you a good person just like being above average doesn’t automatically make you a bad person. The difference is the other positive qualities an above average man brings to the table.
