I can TELL when I'm in shape because no matter what they say, women treat me differently when I've got a nice amount of mass going.

Not to say there aren't outliers, but of course a muscular body does well. Until you get into strongman territory. Also a lot of girls who say this are really saying I can't handle such a nice body because it makes me feel insecure about mine.

Of course men who are in better shape and have muscles are going to be more attractive, but it doesn't automatically mean that dad bods can't be attractive at the same time. No, I don't lie. My guy has a less than perfect body shape thanks to being a little overweight and scarred from a previous surgery. In spite of that, he still has broad shoulders as well as powerful arms and hands. I love watching him beat those strong man games at fairs and amusement parks. So from a personal perspective, I definitely prefer demonstrable feats of strength as opposed to signaling and peacocking. Not only does this study not rate actual sexual attraction but just aesthetic attractiveness, it's not even universal AWALT. The study cited by OP asked women in Australia and Oklahoma what types of bodies they find attractive. This study shows that Chinese women actually prefer men with average bodies over ones with muscular bodes. This likely shows that what body type people find physically attractive has a cultural component.

In addition, this study shows that a majority of both men and women in an African refugee population preferred overweight people of the opposite gender.

Part of this is unrealistic expectations of male bodies. While the article does address this point:

I recently read a follow up study that provided some more interesting details to this obvious reality that women lie about for reasons unknown:

First off; the actual data of the research doesn't even include what is rated more or less attractive; the only data published is the relationship between the individual's personal assessment of the strength of the body and the attractiveness thereof which is correlative.

There are basically two things the research answers

How accurate is the subects assessment of the physical strength of the models based on the pictures shown
To what point does the participant's assessment of the physical strength correlate with rating of attractiveness.

The research established that rating physical strength highly correlates with attractiveness. It also shows however that the participants weren't that amazing at assessing physical strength and that some models that were actually strong were rated weak, and in reverse.

Finally, it at no point says that "ripped" is preferred; it doesn't even indicate that "ripped" models were used at all; in fact, the research did not even publish all the pictures used; there's only a single example photograph given

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING for the longest & is why I refuse to get with men I'm not overwhelmingly attracted to from the start now...and for me physique plays a big part. Why lie to yourself when realistically you don't like dad bods /obese men since you stay in shape...it will only be the reason you break up with them later. Most attractive women don't want their man to look too pretty, they want him to look strong, competent and energetic..for obvious reasons. The reason I will be more attracted to men with ripped bodies is cos they've actually put in work to get like that- so it commands some respect. People generally get far comfier in relationships & put on weight so if they have a dad bod already, it doesn't fill you with confidence for the longhaul. The issue I think lies with the fact that some men that are real gym goers are bimbo chad types that play women/let it go to their head for putting in effort to their appearances & the dad bod men seem like less of a risk cheating...so women may pretend to overlook that for security, even if deep down they aren't sexually attracted to it (men get touchy if u bring up their weight). There is an association that muscular = egotistical...which I do get, a lot of men that hit the gym heavy think they can get by being an airhead asshole, even when pulling attractive smart women who stay in shape. You also get some men that live eat breathe in the gym& can't talk about anything else which gets a bit tiresome. So the idea is that the dad bod dude may be less egotistical...but I don't think that is often the case. I've seen plenty of men with dad bods who think they are gods gift or will cheat still.

It takes nothing to get a dad bod...just neglect... & it shows you aren't too bothered about keeping on top of your shit. It smells of complacency which generally will make women go 'meh'. When I spot a guy has a dad bod now I'm out- cos 9/10 times those men are lazy and insecure in bed. Its not even just a superficial physical thing, its a huge indicator of their lifestyle choices as well & their overall level of self awareness/motivation. Women don't have to work as hard as men in the gym to achieve the ideal desirable figure that most men like because most men truthfully do not want a woman who is anywhere near as muscular as them- they want her toned and in shape most times & they often want her to retain some jiggle to her ass. Also men are on average much stronger than women biologically speaking- hence why they are expected to lift more bc they are better built for it. So it makes me laugh when men who work out think they are 'special' snowflakes and deserve some huge ego /pat on the back bc they 'work harder than women' in the gym...when realistically speaking if women lifted the same weights as them they would feel emasculated. Like yes I respect you keeping fit, but don't act above women in shape because as a man, you are better built to lift heavier weights than women are lol.......... duh. Do these men realllly want their women to get on the same level and get a 6pack? Doubt it, so why do they complain 'wah wah me do more in the gym'?

Personally I think there is nothing wrong with stating you keep active and like that in a man. Some men will be responsive with that and put in effort, but most will get offended & weed themselves out.

You really gotta wonder how many guys who are married or in relationships are basically being settled for when it comes to raw attraction... high divorce rates, dead bedrooms, high materialistic expectations (he has to "compensate"), underlying resentment, excessive "shit testing" behavior, and a host of other problems. That study was literally just using pictures. There are a ton of women who are sexually aroused by chemistry and emotional connection. Like if two guys have the same personality she'll choose the fit guy, but what your torso looks like is not that big a deal to 99% of women.

In this short documentary, both men and women gave their opinions on optimal body types.

Men said that hour glass figures are most attractive. Women thought that men with muscular and somewhat low bodyfat physiques were most attractive. They did various tweeks to a an animated model on a computer screen to determine the most attractive man, physically.

Do you really need a study to know what kind of body on a man is most attractive? I mean we all know what’s hot and what’s not instinctively. This feels like you want to call out women for trying to be nice or accommodating of men who don’t have perfect bodies.

Men lie too to avoid hurting women. We all know you love slim attractive women but you will say a bigger girl is attractive because you might still want to sleep with her and you don’t want to turn her against you.

I don’t lie about the men I find attractive. I don’t find “ripped” men attractive, but do find athletic and fit men attractive. I value maintaining a healthy lifestyle, by following a plant-based diet and going to the gym regularly. So my ideal man is someone who shares similar lifestyle interests and hobbies to myself, (like going to the gym) therefore, I take no shame in my attraction to muscular men. No one should take shame in “hurting others’ feelings”, when expressing what they’re attracted to because we all like what we like.

Late to this but I think the problem is with the conclusion that was drawn because it ignores context.

In the context of this study, women evaluated torsos and rated their attractiveness. The results weren't surprising. There are many attractive qualities about fit men that aren't just aesthetics:

1.) Someone with a better build demonstrates an ongoing, habitual commitment to self-improvement, because you can't look like that if you give up on yourself. 2.) Better physique is a sign of a healthier mate that will have a longer lifespan with a strong immune system. 3.) Exercise is a major de-stressor, and fit people tend to be happier, more confident, and more pleasant to be around than if that ame person did not exercise.

If asked by their peers in the same context, they would probably say the same thing that the women in the study said. However, they are not asked this question in the same context usually. Normally, they are asked what their ideal type is, and that is a much more complex question that encompasses more factors than a photo of a faceless torso.

Because of that, we can't really draw the conclusion that women lie about what they are attracted to. We just need to acknowledge that physique is a factor in determining what makes women attracted to certain men, but it can easily be overshadowed by the many other factors out there that makes a man attractive.

Tl;dr: a neutral study with a biased assumption for a conclusion.
