I think "commit" can mean "having exclusive relationship". It doesn't have to be marriage. Marriage itself is more about confirming the committment and a legal way to make the state see you as one family unit - with all advantages and disadvantages of it.

My husband and I married because it made sense to us - we'd been living together for a few years, we were planning to move to another city together and potentially get a mortgage together. We're together, because we love each other and we make each other's lives better. We share responsibilities and we plan to keep building our lives together...so marriage was a sensible next step to make.

Considering your question about "being used" - well, do you feel men are used in marriage? Shouldn't they enjoy it?

Well it's generally favourable to the man if he has obtained the enthusiastic commitment of a woman his age or a little younger before (on average) age fifty. I believe research has found married men have better mental health, live longer, make more money, etc. than men who have never been married on average. There are pretty strong economic and health reasons for men to get married. The opposite isn't necessarily true for women. The data shows women have a dip in mental health, confidence when married compared to single women, for example. Also, for whatever reason, children in married families currently still have better outcomes than children from cohabitating households when it comes to things substance abuse, depression, high school drop out rates, etc. I'm not against cohabitation and I think those stats could change with the right social change and support structures, but it just is what it is now. I won't move in with my bf before getting engaged because of that. Also, couples who cohabitate before engagement have higher divorce rates, but I digress. But that's a different question from, "What motivates men to marry?" Like we know eating tons of vegetables as a positive health impact is supported by data / health research as well, but that fact alone may not entice many of us to make the healthier decision. So it depends on what you're asking.

In terms of what motivates men to get married when it comes to your feelings, I'm less familiar with any current data on that. These days, it seems to be love, emotional security, and kids.

My bf and I discuss marriage often, and may get engaged next summer. He's saving up now for us to buy an apartment or house together. His reasons are : the symbolic promise to have each other's backs and live as a team / companionship, because I want to and he wants to settle down with me, because he likes my personality/character traits, because it's an ideal set up in this society for raising a family, the research on how children do in married families compared to other structures in American society, he thinks I'm cute and funny and can see spending his life with me, thinks I'd be a great mother, we have strong communication and conflict resolution skills, and probably also because I give insane blow jobs and actually enjoy doing it.

For some men, money can also a factor, as most average men can't provide for a home and double incomes change quality of life and ability to provide for a child. My bf will appreciate my extra income if we get married for sure, but he makes a lot more money already.

Luckily my man doesn't need me to be a virgin or a housemaid with no voice in my life. We've discussed division of domestic labor and I have a dominant personality so he knew from the beginning that I'm not following anyone's instructions as a rule.

Marriage isn't for everyone though. Now more than ever, you can just literally not marry. It's totally fine if you personally just don't want to!

As long as there are no children, finances are kept completely separate with no joint purchases or investments and neither party sublimates their career for the benefit of the other party and you make separate legal arrangements for any necessary medical decisions etc, there’s no legal reason to marry. People do marry for religious, social and emotional reasons though.

Where I live, assets are divided equally between divorcing parties, custody is 50% unless there's a darn good reason for it not to be (parents agreed, or noncustodial is abusive, etc.) and a universal formula dictates how child support is paid and to whom- no gender involved.

Marry a woman who has her own career and earns at least as much as you do, and then you don’t have to worry about the financial ramifications of a potential divorce. But a lot of you won’t even consider that, because you want a housewife. In today's culture there is no real benefit getting married if you're a man. People still live together and have kids together without getting married first. Somewhere around 80% of women initiate divorce so why would a man get married if he's got an 80% chance of losing half of everything he's earned during the marriage. He would still be responsible for child support whether he was married or not. So that doesn't make a difference. A house bought together would still have to be split but if he bought it on his own then he could walk away with that asset. Lastly, you have women who won't take the husband's name and even some that absolutely insist on any children they have together have their last name instead of the husband's....

So again what is the real benefit for a man to be married? This is all very sad IMHO but still very true.

Nothing. I am actively against the paper chains part of marriage. The wedding and a huge party is cool but not the legally binding part. Nope. There should always be the option to walk out of any relationship for any reason at any moment no getting other professionals involved esp professions that make a living on complicating things and twisting the knife. It keeps both partners sharp and on their game to have an open door like that to end the relationship with a clean break, for any reason.

The tax incentives are meh and the power of attorney and health stuff is meh too. It’s already so shitty that being married won’t really help imo. There should be ways to add on friends and partners to health plans 🤷🏼‍♀️ idk I’m not on any medications besides supplements so I don’t really care about that trade off. Besides people like Mark Cuban are starting to break the power that the health system has and making things cheaper.
