How we choose to look is a reflection of what we value or aspire to be. So if someone gets a tattoo they are choosing to look more counter-culture or rebellious or dangerous or free-spirited or artistic or whatever because they value those things at least a little bit. And those things happen to be correlated with high-n, promiscuity, impulsivity, etc.

So it's not about the tattoo, or the suit and tie, or the gold chain, or the baggy jeans, or the low-cut dress, or the artificial blonde hair, or anything - it's the fact that the person chose it. If a guy comes to a business meeting in a sharp pressed suit it's not "impressive - he can buy a suit, dry clean it, and put it on" it's "impressive - he chose to dress up for this".

Edit: As tattoos become more mainstream they become less of those aforementioned things. So someone choosing to have a tattoo tells you less in 2022 than in the past. (Unless it's particularly extensive and/or a face/neck tattoo).

I do respect those who use body art to take ownership over certain kinds of loss: injuries, scars, loss of body parts like mastectomies, deformities, etc. The rest just look try-hard and are uninteresting. Can't say it signals promiscuity as much as it does low inhibition/short-sighted risk-taking. Not exactly personality traits that I want to live with for the rest of my life.

For all the times I've considered one, I could never get past the permanency of such spur-of-the-moment vanity. If I'm going to do something for attention from others, I want it to be for something I've done or created, not sat down and had someone else do to me. Especially because I've never once regretted not getting a tattoo; there's nothing I've ever wanted in the moment that I still wanted much later... I couldn't even tell you what they were now.

I think there may be a higher chance that she might be more promiscuous, but it's not 100%. I've definitely known some low/medium n women with lots of tattoos. But I think on average it probably does correlate to higher promiscuity.

I do have tats of my own. I would not rule out a partner for tattoos, but I would rule out high n.

I think that it’s possible that having tattoos is an indicator of having a certain personality type that is prone to promiscuity, sure, although I wouldn’t pre-judge someone for having them. On the other hand, I think that if a woman has many tattoos that it makes her aesthetically less attractive.

This is wild to me. I'm a tattoo artist and have my own shop, 90% of my clientele are women. I know this is not a general statistic but in 8 years I've talked to and tattooed a lot of women in both Mexico and the US.

I have anything from kindergarten teachers, religious camp managers, to lawyers, nurses, stay at home moms, you name it. women that range between 18 and 70. Many of them are in committed monogamous relationships.

Tattoos are completely mainstream in 2022, and on their own they don't really say much about a person. The type or number of tattoos maybe, but even then.

I understand a lot of people don't like tattoos and that's their prerogative. But to say they all indicate promiscuity or low values/are trashy is a very different thing. Is antiquated, and it's usually about policing women and what we can and can't do with our own bodies. we don't get tattoos for men, and if that keeps specific guys away that will judge us for them, then I'm glad it's working!

It could be because you want to intimidate others in some way(think teardrop) or because you want to declare an affiliation(think mafia or gang).

If it's not either of those, attention is basically the only reason someone would get a tattoo, and craving attention has obvious very negative implications for long term relationships.

I think it’s generally the radicalism that tattoos, piercing, etc represent. You’re literally piercing and or altering your own body. It’s also the factor that you don’t care about self imagine, which indicates that you’re more likely to be promiscuous because you don’t care about reputation. You come from an extremely conservative background and feel the need to reclaim your body. Tattoos are a way of rebellion.
They represent a tradition and are passed down the family.
They represent initiation into a group like mafia or yakuza.
You are ugly in specific places and need some ink to hide the ugly.

If you want to convey art or rebellion, there are so many better mediums than the human body. Tattoos represent impulsive trend whore and basic behavior. Makes complete sense why many women love tattoos now.

These are the most insane opinions I’ve read. I (25F) have two tattoos, both gotten during/shortly after majorly traumatic events in my life when I was all alone. One was commemorative of the fact that I got through it all, and second was a reminder in a time of need. I felt so strongly that I had it inked on my body.

It really depends on the tattoo tbh. The motivation is what is important, and so is the design. I actually think colored neck and leg tattoes and even finger tattoos can be sexually attractive to be because I like aestheticly pleasing stuff from an art point of view, but still these tattoos are tied to personality traits, particularly rebelliousness which is a deal breaker, as well as carelessness and impulsiveness, and even worse liberal views such as feminism.

If a women does not actually have these personality traits, just being tattoed and even heavily tattoed is not an issue if the design is classy and well done and does not signal sluttiness to other people, because I dont want that kind of implication about me.

I think having small, classy tattoos are ideal as well as certain slutty ones, but they have to be small, great quality, aesthetic and not outwardly visible.

however, the few women whos head is in the right state will have zero tattoos, so its still a good indicator of personality no matter what regardless of attractiveness.

Tattoos give me a few impressions.

"I do stuff on impulse"- that doesn't like someone I want to trust my future family with if they do stuff on a whim
"It represents something"- typically it's something traumatic that happened in the past and they're just trying to solve with some tattoo when it can be done just solely mentally.
"I want to stand out"- bruh...that's one of the worst ways to go about being unique. Hell even being unique in that regard is actually a bad way to go about it and makes me think you're just attention seeking

I personally don't have any tattoos, never smoked, not an alcoholic but I drink socially but not to get wasted, never dyed my hair either. I have stuff naturally given to me so why would I want to change them? I accept who and what I am in my life and just strive to be the best version of myself.

I have no tattoos, because I usually find them tacky, and I'm cheap and don't like pain. That being said, there is a context to the tattoo that has to qualify it. Some tats are works of art, and others are trash. It also depends on where on the body it is, because it sort of encourages onlookers to look at it, and if its in a suggestive place that does imply, at least to me, that the person might be more sexual and open to casual sex than other people. Of course I mean the exposed tramp stamp, but also the flower or downward arrow right above the crotch, and the cleavage tat on the breast itself, if its showing. I remember this one tat in particular, it was on the top of a woman's breast, and it was visible in public, and it was a very crudely drawn five sided star. It just kind of says low class person, not sure if they were promiscuous or not, but it sure served to draw attention to the breast, both because of its location, and the poor artwork making you want to look twice, to see if its really as bad as it initially looked.

Tattoos signal lower trait inhibition. In general, that signals worse prospects for having a good easy going long-term relationship. It also in the same vain, suggests lower class over upper class. They fall on the alpha phux side of the spectrum vs the beta bux side of the spectrum for men or women. The relative amount they illuminate these traits changes depending on the culture/society. I don't have any tattoos, in case it would negatively impact me in the C-Suite in the high tech world down the line, but I do debate with myself that it would help in the dating scene with 90th percentile+ women as would TRT over being gym-maxxed natty. Now, how that translates to female promisquity?

Its a complcated curve.

The absolutly most Liberal women have little or no sex with men, and are often lesbian or asexual. Moderately liberal women are quite promiscuous. Moderately conservative women are usually low n-count. Extremely conservative women are either virgins until marriage or destructively super-promiscous due to internalised misoginy.

So, some tattoos indicate mild promiscquity, but extreme tattoos and no tattoos might be non-indicative.

All these kinds of ideas about what indicates promisquity fail to acknowledge one thing: women who are extremely promiscous, or completely against sex at all and lifelong virgins, are very often mentally ill, and it has little to do with the rest of their style, personality, looks etc. In fact, the most promiscous women are likely the most unassuming looking, because there is no point for them to advertise their promisquity: they just chose partners ad hoc.

I personally find tattoos completely abhorrent and gut-wrenching. (Also, it's hate speech if you try to get me to not be true to my internal feelings of disgust on the subject) Like, why would you view your body as a canvas or an accessory like that? I dislike makeup for the same reasons, but at least that can come off and can stop doing damage if they quit wearing it young enough. Same thing with piercings. Tattoos are just on another level.

As soon as I see a tattoo, I lose interest sexually. If someone I know gets a tattoo that I was potentially interested in, it feels like a gut punch as those previous feelings of attraction leave my body.

I'm perfectly fine with being friends with people with tattoos. It's nothing personal, I just don't see you as a potential partner. It's like hanging around divorced women. We can talk about other stuff, fine. You're just never going to cross that threshold.

PS, if reading this makes you desire a tattoo, then trust me, I hope you get one too. That way I don't have to date you for a while before figuring out that you're a crazy person.

My recent thoughts on a similar question of tattoos I would find questionable/disqualifiers:

…this from the perspective of getting into a relationship, that shit matters: badly done or cheap, “meme” tats - something that quickly ran through its 15 minutes of fame (how many people regret moustache tats on their finger, or tribal arm bands), any tit tattoos or getting your pubic mound done, anything on the face or hands. And the blatantly obvious ones like a weed leaf in the form of the adidas logo on your neck (real one!)

I’ve softened a bit on my stance. I saw a girl with the Cadillac logo tatted across her two feet, so when she stood with her feet together it formed the logo. I thought “what an idiot” but then I thought, well maybe her dad died and he loved caddies and this is how she remembers him…? I don’t and won’t get any myself, cant think of anything I wouldn’t be bored of looking at in three weeks

I don’t have tattoos. I believe tattoos correlate to higher body count. They are a huge turnoff. The only time a tattoo makes sense to me is so an otherwise indistinguishable pornstar can be identified on camera.

I knew plenty of girls in college and nearly all of them get a tattoo and a new piercing as a way to rebel since their parents no longer supervise them.

I married a girl with zero tattoos. She also finds tattoos a turnoff. In college when she had the inevitable friends-get-tats night out, she instead got a navel piercing. Both her friends regret the tattoos.

Why would any woman get a tattoo. Men fall asleep and dream of the pristine feminine form. It’s an actual fantasy for men. My ex of 8 years had tatts and she is maybe the girl with the smallest N-count I've met (only two previous to me, by age 24). One of the sluttiest, nastiest and compulsive cheaters I've been with had not even a piercing, she was quite introverted and looked like a noun. She cheated on all her boyfriends with me.

IME, you won't ever know how slutty is a woman or how good she is in bed judging only by her looks. I’m a dude and have no tattoos and 100% wish to have someone without tattoos.

2 things though.

1 my ex of only 3 months had no tattoos and had a ton of problems…I miss her, the sweet side of her but not the side that came out when she drank. She had been through a lot in her life and I hope she’s doing good now. So a woman without tattoos can still have a lot of issues. Some her fault, and some that happened to her that she has to get over

2 my sister has a couple tattoos (like 2) but all are very small to small in size. The biggest one is still small and it’s on her rib cage and it’s just 4 flowers representing our immediate family. She’s a great girl and will make whoever she marries a very happy and lucky man. She’s self-sufficient and a good person.

So all that to say I still don’t find tattoos attractive and didn’t really like when my sister got hers (and her nose ring, not bull ring btw, just small nose ring) but you can’t fully judge a woman by these things. And yeah, she has slept with 5 people or less I believe. I would be supremely shocked if she slept with more.

I think the bigger the tattoo and the more of them someone has, the more indicative they are of issues. But a couple smaller ones? It won’t turn me away anymore. Yes I grew up very conservative and traditional. Time is smoothing me out.

No. I can't think of a single thing important enough to immortalize on my body, or that anyone else should on theirs. On the topic of remembrance tattoos of dead family members or friends, I feel that getting a tattoo of them is especially lowly- placing a reminder of them on your body feels like an incredibly low effort but virtuous thing to do. Better to improve your life in remembrance than pretend a tattoo does any good.

I don’t think tattoos signal promiscuity.

I don’t have any tattoos myself.

That said, I have many friends who do have tattoos. While they’re good friends and fine people, I don’t have to look at those tattoos during sex. So they don’t bother me on friends.

But my partner? Yeah, it’d bother me. It’s an aesthetic thing though.

Of course not. I don't think they're attractive on myself and they're almost always unattractive on women. Most people get shit tattoos.

Also I want to make a point here:

Men RARELY judge women or label red flags unless those men also live their life according to the same principle. For example, men who expect women to be in shape, not fat, not lazy, are often athletic and passionate about fitness. Men who expect women to have low body counts are not looking for casual sex or a girl who will fuck on the first date, they are usually virgins who want a normal gf and a nice relationship. Men who expect things tend to have justifications for them, whereas women do not. Notice how fat women still reject fat men and prefer fit muscular men. Notice how women who have no social skills and bad mental health expect a man with great social skills and a great personality.

I find the tattoos disgusting and also there a red flag to me, due to the fact that people get them usually out of impulse or because other people think is cool. Also majority of people that I've met that have tattoos on the long run end up regretting majority if not all of those tattoos. Also tattoos tend to attract a lot of low moral people. And mementos don't need to be mark on your body that just reflects to me how low your willing to go to for others perspective and validation.

I know I’m late to participate in this discussion but recently I noticed this trend with how men and women treat tattoos differently— keep in mind that I’m from east Asia where the culture is generally much more conservative than the west.

The majority of men who get tattoos tends to treat it like a long term art project with their body as a canvas; whether it be full blown yakuza style irezumi, sailor, Chicano, or some experimental new stuff, men plan out their tattoos thoroughly with a unified theme and style and take a lot of time on making their tattoos look harmonious and pleasing to look at.

Women on the other hand, when they’re covered in a lot of tattoos, it’s just a bunch of spontaneous stuff that doesn’t really look like they have a uniform theme or meaning behind them. It looks like she treats her body like an empty canvas to doodle on and it’s apparent that she took no consideration planning out her tattoos thoroughly and it generally looks ugly. Just a bunch of random doodles like her ex bf’s bday, some weird sentence in Latin, a drawing of her puppy, a random drawing her ex did on her leg 3 yrs ago and stuff like that. The only women I’ve seen who plan out their tattoos and treat it as an art project like many men do have been nerdy high functioning autistic types.

I have several friends (they started as my wife’s friends, we are now as close as cousins) who are married with their high school crush, have been monogamous all their lives and are the perfect woman according to many of those who tend to say this kind of BS. Good looking, one guy only, successful etc. Some of them have a tattoo or two some have none. The ones that got tattoos got them because they thought it would look nice, which they do in my and their husbands’ opinions. On the other extreme both my wife and I have multiple tattoos and both have very very high body counts compared to the average. 10-20-30 years ago it may have been true, maybe people more comfortable with themselves and not conforming to societal norms, often self confident enough to enjoy one of the great pleasures in life were more often the ones with tattoos but not any longer.

I have a close friend who used to self harm and she covered her scars with a tattoo of flowers. I personally like tattoos. A lot of tattoos are meaningful and a lot of tattoos people simply just LIKE. This stigma against people with tattoos is crazy to me because I’ve come across church mice who are judgmental and downright cruel and I’ve come across people covered in tattoos who would give you their shirt off their back if need be. Tattoos don’t define a person’s character. I think that’s something society needs to come to terms with. Tattoos are a form of self expression and that shouldn’t be something to be frowned upon
