As a woman with a 2 year old me and my husband and I have changed our son comes first in the big choices we make.

We pay for an extra few hours of childcare, so we still get time together and some time apart, too. He still plays games. I still read and insane a number of books. We still go from runs together to just one of us pushes a pushchair or takes turns to do a slow lap with our son.

If you know what having children is and have frank conversations about the changes, it's honestly a good choice.

Most of the men and women I've known who decided to have children that ALSO have the problem you're outlining got there because they both decided, though maybe not consciously, that SHE is the expert in raising children. I have yet to meet folks in a relationship where they have this problem and guy is a good guy who steps in to co-parent and she subverts him "You're doing this wrong. You're ineffective. Why are you doing it this way. I'm taking over." Lady, let him raise his child. Let him learn. Let him do the thing. If he's not doing it the way you'd do it, too damn bad. It's getting done. The best advice I've heard is a grandmother telling her daughter "Don't become an expert on taking care your kid because that will become YOUR job." Because if you DO get divorced, you're going to have to coparent no matter what. And if YOU get primary custody, guess who's going to become the "good" parent? The parent that has to do the hard shit and the parent who gets to do the FUN shit?

I know 5 couples personally that broke up after having kids, and yes it was the dads just not stepping up with the changes that involve kids.

One women would ask him to take the baby whist she showered, he was literally trying to hand her back the baby before she could even put a towel on. One women was going for a bath whist he was watching the baby, he started listening to music, she told him it’s not a good idea because you can’t hear what the babies doing, “it’s fine” he told her, well the baby climbed the stairs presumably to follow mum and ended up breaking her wrist, because he wasn’t paying attention

One friend used to join us for 2 hours a week for a coffee n chat, then she started bringing her toddlers, when we asked her why (because it certainly wasn’t a relaxed coffee n chat anymore) she said because it’s not worth the work she comes home too. He lets the kids go feral and ignores them, only feeds them candy and she comes home to chaos. During covid another friend gave birth via c-section, when she was at home wit the newborn the dad kept dumping their toddler on her too because “he needed to use his time off to build a shed, and the toddler was getting in the way” and yes, this women was literally still bleeding when she had to move.

Anyone else see the pattern? Whenever a mother tries to do something for herself including basic hygiene, she was punished for it. The reality is lots of men want heirs, not babies. They don’t want to be inconvenienced by a child but they want to pass on their genes.

I’m not surprised by the declining birth rate now that women are being honest about what motherhood actually is like and men are just not stepping up to prove otherwise

Child being your priority doesn't mean that you have to stop caring about your wive/husband. I know that to well, I made the mistake of priorizing my child too much and I neglected my wife. We end up getting divorced. Did I made a mistake? absolutely. Did she also make a mistake by refusing to communicate with me that she was feeling neglected? absolutely.

My point is that relationships are complex. It's almost never 100% one of the member responsibility. So stating that "Now she is a mother so deal with it" is a very wrong and stupid way to look at it.

You do have a point, there is no such thing as a "brutal divorce", it's a slow and long process but men are pretty bad at noticing those changes. Ironicaly, you're advice that a man should just chut up and accept that she is a mother is a terrible one. Communication is one of the most important pilar of a functioning couple, no one should ever "accept" anything at face value, you should communicate with your significant other about it. The prerequisite of that is to have a GF/Wife who is mature enough to have that kind of conversations and this one is not a given, your post is a good example of that by the way.

Ummm, it sounds like you have some personal issues. This is not common and sounds extremely specific just to your particular situation.

Women divorce men because they can. They are lied to and told that their lives will be better afterward. They only view men as resources to be extracted, not as people, so the best way to extract the most resources is to divorce one man, collect child support and/or alimony, while also being able to date other men and get free resources from those other men also.

Seems like you had a personal experience. And these are your feelings in regards to that.

Anecdotally for me, I became a father, my wife a mother. And for a short period, yes life was very different. Because the kid was our priority. And there was much to learn and much to do.

I don't really know what you mean by sex kitten though? Because how much and what kind of sex a couple has, is between them. And people are different. Are you saying that sex completely stops between a couple after kids, or slows down( obviously not including an initial period where the mother is recovering/this is a given)? Because this also varies from person to person.

Sex actually stayed a priority for me and my wife. Even after kids. We just got better at organising it. I guess if she is my sex kitten for this, then I am still her boy toy. As in we have an active and healthy sexual life that continues and is better than ever. Even with kids around.

Lastly, there are many things about being a parent, where my wife is not as good as I am, and vice versa. It does not give me the right to constantly complain about her weaknesses. I accept them and step ut to do my part. She recognises that and leans more into the things she does right.

For those parents, where one completely drops the ball, man or woman. Yes there is a valid reason to leave.

I don't know if it's being self-centered. I think the transition is really difficult on everyone and men are less inherently attached due to a lack of pregnancy, breast-feeding, and brain chemistry, and less effort being made to engage fathers pre and post birth by various systems. It is literally harder for them to make this transition.

I also think, many women unknowingly enable this to get even worse by trying to do everything themselves and exactly perfectly in order to "be a good mother". There needs to be more strikes and protests. Tell him to get the fuck up and change and feed that baby. Don't let him sleep. Don't let him wine. Throw his weed in the toilet if you must. Unplug the game mid game. Follow him to the forums and embarrass him. Let the baby cry a little more than you would like because it's torture for him too. Put it on him to care for the child. Don't buy he's going to let this baby suffer or die. He won't. Baby screams are military torture devices for a reason. It works. He will eventually get up and do what he's meant to. And show him if you must. This is a diaper, you're changing it. I've shown you, I expect you to do this by yourself now. This is a bottle, feed the baby like this. This is how you burp them. Once and no further discussions. He says you do it better, you say "and that's why you're going to go practice, babe".

If you must, socially shame him for this behavior in loud and embarrassing ways that he is a bad father who does not care for his infant and acts like a child.

And also throw him a bone in some ways, yes, it's unlikely sex will be on the brain for the first year of that child's life and there's no rush to be ready. But communicate openly and honestly about that. Let him know eventually normalcy will return and sex will be on the menu sometimes again. Try to plan for a couple's weekend in the future. Prioritize intimacy someday.

I dont really get why this is gendered. Yes MOST women change after they have a baby, MOST men change after they have a baby. This is a common thing becsuse baby needs parents. But the idea that usually women step up and become mothers and men start playing video games and cheat is silly and wrong.

Or even worse, come out as a transgender woman and suck the entire baby happiness out of everyone. I have now seen this happen with two people I know, one being my boyfriend’s ex best friend. Because of the coming out, all resources were diverted towards the husband. No more baby shower or baby announcement because “muh dysphoria” and now their marriage is falling apart with a newborn.
